Sagittarius A, our biggest hypothetical door to a white hole big bang in another universe so we can escape the heat death entropy of this one. Even if we can't get it to work in a 100 trillion years, it's like a mental "0" of a placeholder to deal with a current existential crisis.

Neutron stars are the coolest things out there - unlike black holes, they're physical objects that - in principle - you can see and study, and they're just about as weird. It would be especially wild to find one that's finally cooled off (and maybe spun down), so it's literally a big ball of neutrons that you could at least imagine studying up close (and living to write the paper.)

Cicero was a Roman senator, often considered the best statesman of Rome's history. He tried to keep the Roman Republic alive, and had some success for a while, but eventually he was proscribed by the soon to be first emperor of Rome, Octavian. Unrelated comment I know, but I found the talk about Cicero interesting and I recently watched a bunch of videos about the end of the Roman Republic which is why this was on my mind.

@@christopher5958 Well my bad for specifying Octavian, but Cicero was proscribed by the second triumvirate as a whole, so Octavian, Antony, and Lepidus did; maybe Antony was "officially" the one who did but I am not sure, but it happened the same year Octavian was consul which is why I said he did.

There is one thing I hope AI development will solve as soon as possible. That is real-time translation to any language using the speaker's voice so I can show your videos to my daughters who don't speak English yet. It's not too early to teach children, especially if there is such an easy and fun way, just by watching your videos. You two would 100% awaken anyone's thirst for knowledge, no matter how old they are.

Cant recall how long ago it was but i stumbled across niel discussing stars on some talkshow. It changed my life instantly. I dont watch tv anymore, just find interesting topics and deep dive the rabbit holes. I used to read maybe 2-3books a year, now reading 50 plus. Man the stuff they didn't teach us in school. I went to schools in 1 of the best county's in the country. I feel like i have learned more from Dr Tyson than all my years in school.

I loved science in school and was told that my math skills were not good enough to consider a career in the field . But thanks to Neil ( my absolute favorite educator on all things Space Science and then some ) I feel like I have pretty good grasp on our universe. I do feel like so many things I learned in school are being challenged by new technologies, findings and ideas . I would recommend to anyone who enjoys Star Talk as much as I do to read Mr. Tyson’s books. He narrates many of the audiobooks as well . 😊

I am so happy that Niel also thinks that Gladiator is the greatest movie of all time, because that is what I always have been saying. I can watch it 100 times, and it makes me weep every time. Cicero is indeed the servant of General Maximus Decimus Meridius.

Hi from Las Vegas. I attended engineering school in the '70s. A professor of mine proved mathematically that, given a steady consistent level of rain falling and steady winds, or none at all, that it did not matter whether you walked or ran through the rain and that one would get equally wet either way. Don't ask me to do the proof. His calculus equations were above my pay grade. I didn't get it then either. However, if one stops on the journey through the rain, you will get wetter. Result? If it's wet and cold, I run. If it's a warm rain, I walk. If a tropical squall, stop and enjoy the fragrant aromas released by the rains. Thanks for the fun show.

So cool to have you back together in the same room! Forgot to factor in wind when calculating rain accumulation. If it's sufficiently windy, the rain won't fall vertically, but at an angle, so that when you walk you'll accumulate more rain than if it would be no wind

I remember reading an article about the rain intake. In brief, of it rains lightly walking normally makes you take less rain than if running. In the case of an heavy rain, run boy!

Thanks for the great episode. One buck per thought here: 1) Angels are those who don't live by, as they would say "Classical" physics knowledge here on our planet. 2) A supermassive black hole is not infinitely dense, but infinitely voluminous (to an infinitesimally small volume).

7:27 Mythbusters actually tested the "running in the rain" thing and walking soaked the clothes less than running. They didn't even have puddles of water, so I am guessing you would get even wetter if you occasionally hit puddles of water.

Regarding the walking in the rain discussion… Let’s assume the rain is falling uniformly - that is, each square unit of ground space receives the same amount of rainfall for a given period of time. If we are moving through that space the amount of rain hitting us from above will also be uniform just not the same raindrops will be making contact. So, what I am suggesting is that the vertical component of rain that hits the cross-sectional area that is facing up will not vary significantly as walking speed changes. The horizontal component is different as it is possible to collect a larger component of the rain that is falling down on the front side while not losing an equivalent amount on the back side.

I recently replayed an old video game called Fez. And it was interesting to me because after watching Star Talk and understanding more about dimensions gave that game a whole different experience. The game is basically "what if we DID have command over the dimensions".

I don't think I've heard you guys bring it up before, but the "Stargate" TV series has a lot of episodes that intersect with some of the topics you discuss (especially wormholes, which is what the "Stargate" itself essentially is). When you brought up the question regarding whether it would be dangerous to connect a wormhole on earth to one near a black hole, it reminded me of an episode where exactly that happened. The gate on earth was connected to another in a collapsing orbit around a black hole, and it caused both gravitational anomalies and time dilation in the area around the Stargate on earth that progressively got worse. The biggest plot hole IMO was that it didn't seem like the gate was pulling earth's atmosphere through it, but other than that it was a really interesting portrayal of theoretical wormhole physics concepts.
