In the 1920s, the term "race music" started gaining traction as a way to describe African American music, the term first appeared in advertisement in the Chicago Defender by Okeh Records, a label founded in 1918. This term was used to categorize music made by African American artists for the African American community regardless of genre.

The term "rhythm and blues" was coined by Atlantic Records co-founder Jerry Wexler in 1947. Earlier terminology to describe records geared towards the African American market (such as Sepia Series, Harlem Hit Parade, "Race Records") were considered offensive by the late 1940s. Black people hated the terminology to describe these records by King Oliver, Rev. J.M. Gates, Ida Cox, Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, etc. who were all big sellers in the Black community at that time.

Thank you excellent job explaining the struggle Black artists had producing and selling there music as well as getting the necessary airplay due to very few Black producer's and radio stations to push our music. Also the racism and low royalties our artists received as compared to other artists didn't help.

Most popular American music mentioned was invented by Afro Americans but you can’t leave out the invention of Rock & Roll by Little Richard and Chuck Berry! The Beatles learned how play Rock & Roll music from Little Richard and they were actually managed by Little Richard when they were on the VJ record label! Most white English groups such as The Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds were inspired by Afro American artists! Those white artists still living are billionaires now!

This isn't rocket science. Black people sing what we feel. Our music come from the soul, pain, thoughtfulness, spiritual, happiness, love, and joy. We get it! They don't...

No, I get it, but you're right to be upset about black artists getting ripped off.

The time I grew up in you heard pat boone singing songs that black artist had made popular as he couldn't mimic the talent only allowing audiences to be aware that the particular song was out there & when compared to the originals sung by black artist it fail in comparison some black artist @ the time even thanked pat boone because he brought notice to the music he was trying to mimic

I collected vintage 78 records. The brown paper sleeve containing some of the discs advertised not only “Race records,” but “Hillbilly music.”
