This video is called The Rag Bag because much like a rag rug, it's made by crocheting around fabric with yarn. It's a very fun and simple project that you can completely customize with different colored fabrics and yarns and changing the size or the shape. I can't wait to see what you come up with!
Come join me on my Facebook group at Ginell's Quarantine Crochet.

I thought I was going to learn to sew when I retired, so I bought a machine and I have lots of fabric. Then I found crochet and I became HOOKED! (Pun intended!) Now I can combine my crocheting with all of the lovely fabric that’s been in a tote for the last 4 years!

All things told, crochet is more portable. It's dangerous to whip out the sewing machine on a road trip, and I think I've seen a whopping one person manage it on a plane.

When i was a child we used to make what we called rag rugs, these were made in exactly the same way but with old tags from t-shirts, old bed linen etc. It's nice to see these forms of crafting while recycling make the rounds again!

FIRST. THANK YOU FOR THIS NEW TO ME way to combine YARN and FABRIC. I'm a 'creative creature' (LOL). I am a quilter. My husband wishes I would only quilt. Personally, I dabble with many different crafts. I've been able to prove to hubby how it is possible to combine different crafts and the required necessary materials with my #1 hobby of sewing. I.E. beads, paint, dyes, hand embroidery, YARN and of course FABRIC. I have a small quest room filled with all supples and then some😅. I've been down sizing those other craft supplies. However, I just couldn't let go of my yarn supplies. Crocheting is one craft that I really enjoy when needing to rest and cope with disabling pain flare-ups (Desert Storm veteran). Crocheting is my " go to friend" for mental mindless machine. It's my best PILL with little to none side effects. Can't use sewing machine while lying in bed. LOL. I so excited about this NEW idea of yours, that I'm know what I'm going to do while hubby drives us to various places that are more than 15-30 minutes away. Can't wait to watch more of your videos. Thanks again for sharing your talents.

First, thank you so much for your service and for what you sacrificed for your country! I too am all over the board when it comes to crafts. I just recently had to downsize a lot of the supplies I have saved up for years in order to begin moving across the country and I have promised myself I won't accumulate that much again. My daughter used to work at a craft store so I got the family discount and that just added to my closets full of goodies. I am so glad you have something that gives you joy even when you are in pain and I'm glad I got to help inspire you. ❤️ Welcome to the channel!

Old t-shirts YES and someone mentioned thrifted sheets. I in fact have a stack of old sheets I was about to give away that maybe should be made into strips. I used plastic bags to fill my scrappy pumpkin in that video but I have since been informed and have started to notice that most plastic bags are biodegradable now so they lose structure pretty quickly. Also, in Tennessee I can find plastic bags everywhere but in Oregon they are pretty scarce. Your name has PNW in it so you probably know. Great ideas!

This is the same or very similar technique used in the cobblestone cowl (paid) using two different yarn weights. The chunky/bulky weight is the one you crochet over but you sk a chain to have it show more. I knew I had done this stitching before in making rugs.....I guess it's good I've lived long enough to recognize an old remake of a pattern into something wearable instead of walking on or carrying. This weave look can also be done with Tunisian crochet as in the brushland wrap pattern which is a freebie.

It's really a cute idea. . I can use not so perfect anymore (stash that has faded areas from a sunny window) or fabric that was printed off grain, or not the best quality fabric in the stash. Also good for "what was I thinking" purchases that are no longer our style.

What a great idea! I've made purses from "plarn", and they are very sturdy and feel as smooth as leather. Plarn is also great for weaving around metal hanging basket and window box frames. It lasts much longer than the coconut liners and look amazing. My window box still looks great after 3 years in the elements. 😊

This is such a cool idea! It gives me all kinds of other ideas on how to embellish it! Oh, btw, I think there's a quicker and easier way to cut the fabric so that it's all one string. If you look up videos on making plarn (plastic bag yarn), they use some kind of magic to fold it a certain way so that you can cut the entire piece at once. I might be mistaken, but I'm going to check it out after I leave here. Thanks for the cool idea!

@GinellCooper Amanda uses a spinning wheel. I learned to spin using a drop spindle, which is a lot less money to get started. After watching her and a couple of other ladies spin while doing demo at our local Renfest, when I did my first yarn, I managed a lot smaller yarn than my classmates. Watching someone spin is like watching water flow, so calming!

But when I started learning crochet some of these patterns and techniques were not popular yet, I have noticed they are gaining in popularity again, especially the deeply textured 3/D patterns.

It is my goal to create a written blog for some of my most popular videos as time allows, but this has been a year of big changes for me as I prepare to move my family across the country so I have only done a few so far. But if you would like to subscribe so you see them as they come up, my website is Ginellscrochettherapy.com

When I was young I always had knitting/crochting projects with me. You mentioned, that you made one of these bags on the plane. Now I had thought that with security issues on planes a crocheting needle would be considered a dangerous weapon, how did you manage?
@GinellCooper
@GinellCooper 10 месяцев назад
Crochet hooks, tapestry needles and even a pair of scissors is allowed if the blade is small enough...at least in the U.S. ... I always check the TSA checklist to make sure before a flight. If I don't have scissors small enough, I will take nail clippers and use those to break the yarn instead. I think knitting needles are also allowed, I would have to check on that though.

I’m glad you didn’t have terrible music in the background lol
@GinellCooper
@GinellCooper 7 месяцев назад
Oh my gosh, thank you. I do use music on my one minute videos or at least I did, that might change with the new ones coming in 2024. Music is problematic anyway because it might be royalty-free now but then 2 years from now it isn't and the video either gets its music taken away or it gets demonetized. Also, I have been watching videos from one person lately who uses the same music in all her videos and it's just on a loop. I have to mute it so I can concentrate on what she's doing. Her videos are great otherwise though. Being a content creator is challenging. There are a few choices I have made in the past I wish I could redo but we just learn as we go around here 😁

Very pretty. When cutting your material on the edges. Would it work better to round the corner instead of leaving the square look? I think it would be a better finished look without the bulk. Just a suggestion. Have you ever tried plastic bags cut into strips instead of the material? I really like the material. I just was curious if you had tried it. I thought it was a fun idea and I made some baskets that way. They make really sturdy baskets.
@GinellCooper

Yes I like the idea of rounding the corners in future projects. I haven't done the plastic bag strips but I have seen others do it. I usually save my plastic bags for stuffing like in the scrappy pumpkin project.

@@GinellCooper Be careful when one uses plastic bags, especially when it’s used as strips instead of fabric for bags. Most plastic bags are made now to disintegrate for ecological reasons, so you may find it will fall apart and shred over time.

Honestly they were all different. I used fat quarters...quilting squares...that I got on clearance and also fabric remnants so they were all just bits and pieces. I show in the video how to cut the strips to make them one long piece and also how to put shorter pieces together.

Would it be possible to make the handle longer? My mother asked me to make Jerome market bags with long handles so she can put them on her shoulder.
@GinellCooper
@GinellCooper Год назад
Sure! You would basically just make the chain that goes over the space to create the hole for the handle much longer and if it were me I might make it closer to the top so the straps were skinnier. However there are other ways too. You could just purchase one of those leather straps with the hooks on either side and then crochet in some D rings on both sides of the bag (maybe on the inside close to the top) so she can use it as a handbag or a shoulder bag. Options 😁

@GinellCooper
@GinellCooper Год назад
Yes absolutely. Just keep in mind that a lot of plastic bags are being made biodegradable now though. I live in Oregon (at the moment) and if you can even find a plastic bag at all, they are biodegradable. Which means they break down over time. Someone told me this when I used bags to stuff my scrappy pumpkin and suddenly I noticed it more. This might not be an issue in other states
