Check out this fun video for The Rake: a funky piece I wrote for a new contemporary cello etude book with Mike Block, and Mark Summer coming from Berklee Press later this year! The focus of the piece is on the raking technique used by electric bass players to add spice layers of articulation to their rhythmic ideas.

Love it Jacob! Book is ordered and on its way, and I'm looking really seriously at the improviser's guide site as well. The almost RATM-like "killing in the name of" vibe starting around :40 is just...SO tasty on the cello, with the key modulation and dynamics and all the rest of your own personal steez. Great stuff, really looking forward to studying this one!

Right on Evan! The book is a cool way to explore cello techniques... IGC is for learning to improvise, and overcome the blindspots cellists have in approaching it.

Debra, good question. So when most people talk about nonclassical /alternative/multi-style cello, they are thinking about extended techniques like chopping/raking etc. often using them in fiddle music or bad covers. If you want to learn about these techniques, RU-vid is great as it allows you to SEE how the players are executing that technique. Then there is something much deeper which is actually being able to improvise and developing a voice on your instrument beyond the tricks. If you want to learn about improvisation, I like Eugene Friesens book allot, but for video there is only one place that really systematically breaks down the unique challenges cellists face as improvisors and provides real substantive insight and that's The Improvisors Guide to The Cello (www.theimprovisorsguide.com). The site also has an outstanding Groove of the week series dedicated to the former with chopping, flicking and pizz lessons from many of the best cellists in the business.

Rodrigo, so great to hear from you man! Are you a cellist? So this particular piece was part of a book of Contemporary cello etudes you can get from Berklee press. You can get my other compositions from partreon.com/jacobszekely and I'll be launching an online sheet music store next week actually to celebrate my new album.

what happened to his c and g pegs
@jacobszekely
@jacobszekely 4 года назад
Those are called posture pegs. They are hiding in there but you insert an Allen wrench light key to turn them. They’re designed so that you don’t have to tweak your neck when playing the cello and having the peg box up against your head. For me it makes the cello much more comfortable to play, but it means that I rely on the fine tuners!
