Its great news that Rodney had a new home 😊 I had an original rancor as a gift ad a kid (35 years ago) from my late uncle. Had it for yeaaaaaars, and it had since been lost 😢 This would have been a fantastic build for him
Yes indeed! If you want to check out our Smugglers Guild over on Patreon we actually uploaded a weathering tutorial this week there for our members. If not, no worries, we are going to upload one here soon too!
Would LOVE to see an extended video on the uses and techniques with laser cutter. The more I binge on your videos and see what you make the more ideas I get and want to pick one up. It definitely makes some precision looking pieces!
THANK YOU!! I’m glad to see someone doing this stuff. Making something out of nothing. And it might not mean anything to a great many people, but it puts those materials to good use, and it sparks innovations in the minds of those who might be looking for some use for materials that they have laying around.
Looks good so far. I think we all appreciate that you show the struggles in addition to the successes. You need both to be able to “make something out of nothing” and further your craft! Well done!
that's coming alone nicely! I like how you kept in the "pivots" you had to make during the process. keeps it real, because not EVERYTHING comes together as planned. great video!
Fantastic weathering on that rock face the technique on the second rock fade was so simple and yet so affective I am very interested in attempting the technique!!!
Another handy tool for giving the foam a rock texture is a wire brush. I got a pack of 3 small brushes, one with stiff plastic one brass and one steel and use a combination of all 3 to Brice the rock face some texture.
Rodney's romping room. I love this. Such a cool idea. Can't wait to see the finish. I like the fact that you tell us what you do, both what works and what doesn't, we learn from both.
Hint for more authentic rock formations... Rock even if formed as strata is very rarely 100% horizontal to the floor/horizon. It usually is upshifted, or jutting in one direction or another. It also doesn't fracture in equal layer thickness as you have it due to following the thickness on the foam sheets. Variation is the key for thickness and angle. Also be sure to scale up rubble from sand to pebbles to stones to boulders to the rock wall for a realistic embankment.
I'm loving this build! Great work and really looking forward to the next video. Those rocks turned out really well. Also, I really appreciate that you left the bits in where you decided to backtrack and rework the terrarium. Everyone makes mistakes and you've shown that it's all part of the building process.
This was GREAT! I have the same foam cutting set and am going to be doing a rock ceiling in my room build using foam and was learning along with you and taking notes since I haven't even taken mine out of the box yet!!
Love it, as always. And I learned something new today. I always thought that a terrarium was a glass enclosure where plant and animal or aquatic life existed together. I thought a diorama was where you showcase figures and things like that! Lol
Nice job Brian! The stone turned out great. I used XPS foam on my Big Trouble in Little China Jack Burton display to make stone. I love working with the stuff.
I firmly believe music selection is the hardest part of video production. Or at least if you have a budget that negates paid for music. I think my fav’s Brian uses are those retro roaring 20’s songs
Love this project! If your planning on doing something similar in the future, I've got a couple of tips for you, from one model maker to another. 1. If you nail a couple of wood batons to the bottom of the board, it won't warp when you apply grouting material. (Can't tell you how many projects I've ruined by forgetting this.) 2. If you apply a layer of PVA glue and sand to the rock surface it would have made it all more unison and would have added more texture and a great seal for the XPS foam.
Rodney’s home is progressing nicely. Can’t wait to see the whole set finished and put in place. Question: are you planning to do any weathering to Rodney? He’s looking a bit glossy and fake. Also, maybe consider splattering a bit of Gamorean Guard blood and bits. Too gory?
Never too gory for us Deanna! Yes, totally planning on taking after Rodney with some paint, Carissa pointed out that same thing. We are going to do a full exclusive "Rodney Paint" for the Guild Members!!! Thank you so much!
Very nice. Have you tried experimenting with mineral spirits on the foam from a spray bottle and then rinsing off yet?? Just do it some place that is well ventilated.
My first job out of high school involved cutting styrofoam and foam rubber with a hot wire cutter. In a small room. Lots of smoke and stink. Have you ever tried stuff called " Durham's Rock Hard Water Putty"? Two jobs ago, we used it sometimes for the theatrical /drama department. Cheap, easy to work with and odorless ( nearly so). I wonder if anyone has made a functional pet carrier like the one on " Alien"?
I'm currently into 1/6 scale Star Wars figures. Wondering if you've ever thought about doing anything in the size?? I'm currently going through ideas for a Mythos Obi Wan display in Tatooine.
Looking great Brian! Can't wait to see how this turns out. The learning process is one of the best parts of making stuff. If you are interested in other tips and tricks, check out Luke Towan's channel. He's a model railroad builder and has a lot of great ideas and techniques to use!
Pretty sure Boylei Hobby Time learned that Modpodge with paint trick from Black Magic Craft. Its commonly called the "Black Magic Base Coat" in the wargaming/ttrpg scenery crafting community. He didn't invent the technique, but he certainly popularised it.
@@TheSmugglersRoom sweet thought i recognised the layout i have one of little bit further in the movie (tie chasing Y wing in the trench) framed on the wall, any idea where you got the shirt from?
Im really happy I stumbled on your channel, everything looks cool as $&*#. This is looking great as well. Keep it up and one more thing....can I have it?
Dear Brian the future terrarium of Rodney will be, I am sure of that, a true amazing pit ! If I may give you a little tip, go on the "tabletop witchcraft" channel to kip tips about the painting of the rocks and caves ! I am waiting the second part withe great expectetions !
I so much love your videos! I love that you use Adobe Illustrator to sketch your pieces. I have used AI to design diorama pieces in the past but, unfortunately, I don't have access to a laser cutter (yet). Now... what thickness acryllic do you use on your SW control panel builds? Any specific brand that you recommend?
Thank you Martin! We have been using Delvies Plastic. They have great product, excellent customer service, and their prices are reasonable. For my laser cutter I use a lot of 1/8” material, and also some 1/4” material. Check them out: www.delviesplastics.com/
I stay back a bit so I don’t get any squeeze out. And I try to just do drops about a 1/4” inch away. Seems to do the trick. With the MDF you could also use wood glue. I’m just so impatient
Hí from Spain Ihave a question about the foam plates....which is the name of this type of foam?? Sorry , I know that my english is very poor. Awasome job Thanks for advance
It’s actually a Japanese wood saw. I have a set that I use exclusively on wood. However this one I had dropped a few years back and damaged some of the teeth. So I filed this down and I use it still for things like foam rather than throwing it out.
I hate to say it, but the original looked more like actual rock. The second looks like the more you tried to avoid a pattern, the more you ended up with one.
There were way to many "Experimental And failed OverDoing" and "I Know Better than Tried and True Methods" type of mistakes made in this build... Hope we all learned from this.
