My question is. Should a person that want's to buy a raspberry pi to emulate games buy this? Seems like you'll spend less on this than if you buy the pi by itself and then you have to buy a case and accessories for it.

I would get one of these just for Commodore 64 and Amiga 500 emulation alone! The funny thing is that this Raspberry Pi 400 costs less than my 1200 baud modem for the Amiga 500 did back in the day and this is way more powerful!

This Pi 400 is a gem! I have RPi3 but what stopped from working with it was the lack of a good keyboard, case, cables and to get a complete a set i had to wait for a long time (since most elements of a complete kit were ordered on Aliexpress which and the shipping was way too long). But now everything is gathered in 1 'place' which is extra convenient! Love this product!

You have to dig deep now a days don't go to ROM sites. Go to pirate bay ad down all the games at once there was all the NES,SNES,Genesis and all Mame games

@Big White Duck sure some can be but takes forever to download that way to. Google reddit for the Piratebay website link that is working then search for what system you want. Then you can download them all in one shot.

That's what I thought too, nothing is easy or intuitive on these unfortunate. It's my own fault though, I haven't had to own a computer for years because I use my Samsung Note 9 with a Dex station for everything. I assumed that since everyone was swooning over this thing, surely I could just download and transfer everything I need (like everything else) but no dice. My enthusiasm outweighed their software development.

personal computers likes c64, apple, atari, ti-99/4a, vic-20, etc were VERY popular in North America, too. That's why us old guys find this to be a cool product, it's like a computer like we used to know them.

Now the question is.... Will it run Turbo Out-Run, Rad Mobile or Hang-On, Super Hang-On. Those seem one of the hardest retro arcade games to run on a Pi or a mini classic machine.

I did this with an old laptop that had a broken screen. This means I was able to use win10. It felt strange not having a desktop box tower thing next to me

As a note, if you're "stuck" with an image that won't recognize the keyboard, keep in mind if you've enabled it previously, you can still SSH into the unit and manually pull and install updated libraries for (I'm assuming) Raspbian, which will probably pull Retropie in line as well.

No not exactly. Has to be updated past version 4.6. if the image was made for the Pi 4 it needs to be 4.7.1+ to work. So essentially any official Retropie build for the Pi 4 will work as long as you update it. Now if you download the latest Retropie build from the official site for pi 4 those will work fine going forward just need to add games etc.

I don't understand how they could leave out the 3.5mm audio jack from that thing. That kills the whole all-in-one concept for me. Not only are there millions of HDMI displays without speakers out there, the 3.5mm jack is a worldwide standard. Wasn't the idea of the Raspi being an affordable learning device for poor people? Those are also more likely to own a cheaper HDMI monitor and a simple analog headset. Even if you see the Pi400 as a replacement for the classic home computers, those also were about connectivity to devices that average consumers would own. That's why most of the popular early machines had TV outputs built in. A 3.5mm audio jack wouldn't have cost much and made the Pi400 so much more versatile. I really hope they come up with a new model with more RAM options (8GB) and a 3.5mm audio out. Until then, I'll stick with the normal Pi4b.

I've plugged in my RP400 and there is a blank screen on the HDMI, but it's all turned on. I've put my SD card into a different computer to check there is everything on there, and all the boots are... any one know what the issue is?

I had a The C64 maxi, bought it for retro goodness. Then they hit us with the A500 mini, no functional keyboard. Somebody pointed out the Pi 400 would happily run as an emulator for these and many other platforms. Sold the C64, got the Pi 400.

For what I know, this unit doesn’t have a 3.5 audio jack input. So if you have some devices with jack you want to connect, you have to buy an USB adapter probably. You could just have not enough USB ports for a simple set up

Kind of wish it had a full keyboard - meaning at least arrow keys and Insert/Home/Page Up/Delete/End/Page Down - on the left. I guess I can survive without a numeric keyboard. No matter, a Raspberry Pi with a Kodi case is also fine. My keyboard cost more than my Raspberry Pi - but I type a lot.

In the next pi model, I desire built in storage with no more reliance on flaky sd cards. It might cost more but worth it for the speed improvements. Or a pi laptop styled like the 400, which saves on having to connect to hdmi out.

It's fast enough as a desktop machine in which you can try out different operating systems, and useful as a retropie machine. If your joypad messes up in retro pie or something else goes wrong, you've got the keyboard to get you out of trouble, or you can write another os onto sd card on the computer. What's not to like?

I feel entirely lost, or maybe grateful... This is my first Pi, so may be a great thing I missed 399 iterations, or start of an even more massive collection. 😂 Happy MLP checked it out for us, I'm a n00b but some other reviews are so deadpan, the Beginner's Guide itself is more exciting. Psyched to have a piece of history, I'm still learning about Commodore, ZX Spectrum and others, but really sweet Pi-dea they had! A lot more engaging and more potential to it than tinkering with old tablets.

This does look pretty awesome... if only they could have oriented the USB ports to the side of the keyboard or the front? It's a nit pick, but if I were to put this wired piece of hardware on say... an entertainment center, and wanted to use a wired controller... super awkward to have the controller plugged in the back.
