It's well known that frank Sinatra refused to work anywhere that treated Sammy Davis like a second class citizen. He also paid Sammy hospital bills when he was dying and was broke.
Johnny Carson was not a member of the rat pack, but certainly was a mate. He was also the greatest talk show host that ever lived. Love them all. RIP Gentleman. You still make life better for us privileged enough to know you and adore you.
I love how when Sammy gets the ball rolling, Sinatra orchestrates the band and Dean starts clapping towards the audience. These guys had all bases covered.
‘I’ll-get-Mickey-and-Judy-together-and-we’ll build-a-barn,’ 🤣…it’s so true, every time they did the ‘let’s put on a show’ thing, Busby Berkeley dragged out the barn!
Sweetest part is at 2:45 when Frank cracks up and places his head on Sammy's shoulder. They were truly good friends who loved each other. No hiding it.
@@dozerconway5874 you do realize that drinking was an act too right? Dino was a known drinker on stage but later his daughter said her dad had a apple juice in the glass cause he couldn't sing when he drank. He was an entertainer. A real one.
I got the chance to see him live in the 80's with Sinatra and Liza Minelli and he was mesmerizing. When his set finished it was like you had been carried away. I remember seeing him on TV, Merv Griffin and the like, but nothing held a candle to the live performance.
yes..men who weren't afraid of being men-- can you imagine them NOW-- with all this crappy shit going on???? omg---- there will be holes in the desert tonite ..lol
alec sigg Not just your country - the whole WORLD needs this kind of class, charisma, style and just pure, wonderful unmatched talent back again. But sadly, those more innocent, fun-loving days are long-gone, lost in the mist of the memories of those of us who were there, and the world is now a much colder and harsher place.
*I think the audience realized they were witnessing an historic moment! And who knew Johnny Carson could sing? He held his own against three of the greats of show business!*
I was fortunate to have met Sammy when they opened the casinos in Atlantic city. He didn't know me from Adam and he must have talked to us for an hour. He was pure class! I will always love this man!
It seems like they didn't try to force the past on the present, they just acknowledged it and moved forward with humor because the respect and love was real.
@D T I am from the days of respect and honor and all the good things that are rare today! These cats where the best and embodied true coolness! Regardless of your race or background you wanted to be like them on so many levels! They were actually before my time and I am 51 now, but through TV and later appearances I got to enjoy true legends @ their best!!!!
Well apart from one gimmick Dean Martin being a drunk he dint actually drink that much most of the time he was on stage with what was believed to be a scotch was actually apple juice so yes they did have a gimmick and that was he acting as a drunk none the less still unbelievably talented
@@johnbaker7576 Until the end. Dean came on too drunk too often. Frank dropped him. Never even went to Dean's funeral. He had had it with Dean being drunk.
You are a total idiot Dean Martin was playing a drunk he was acting ,everybody on the set knew that but it takes an idiot to make suck a statement like you!
@@benjaminandersen5921non of them were actually racist. Especially Sinatra was well known for his anti-racist opinion. They acted like fools on stage, to show people how foolish racism is.
These guys are the epitome of class and coolness! No new era will ever have their reputation....they were civil rights activists...read it...pop-culture phenoms, and had the best voices ever!
This video is incredible. Just imagine if you could travel back in time to attend this concert, sitting in the first row. What an experience could it be.
@@JMARTIN1947 It´s always easy to bad mouth a deceased person like Johnny Carson. The truth is millions of people loved him, like they loved e.g Bing Crosby. They both had good and bad personal traits, as human beings. There is no denail in that. But then again, who can say honestly they dont have that. Johnny stopped drinking, as he at least had that level of self awarness. Not every mean drinker does that, so credits goes to Johnny. So I am sure his loved ones got to see more of the good sides of Johnny, after he went sober.
@Jane O'Leary Well, to be fair, in the company of greatness like Frank, Dino and Sammy, who wouldnt look out of place. And this was way before Johnny became the King of Late Night.
All you bad mouthing Carson can all just go sit at the back of the bus. You don't appreciate good clean humor anyway, you have to frack all over everything.
Talent on show here in huge quantities. A stage full of it. No autotune. No miming. No CGI. No gimmicks. Just talent. Wonderful. Thank you for posting this.
Cragmortis They were both... plus Sammy was also of course an excellent dancer and could play many musical instruments. And Dean and Frank both proved that they could be fine dramatic actors in the right film roles.
Everyone was a comedian in the 50s, look at the Johnny Carson show, the one with Dean Martin then the one with Frank and Dean. The most entertaining shit ever
These were the coolest cats in the 60's, they did not need half naked back ground dancers and fancy strobe lights, just a great orchestra or two with their vocals and their stage presence. Man, I miss those days.
I am a widow, my husband Jim and I were married 58 years. We saw the rat pack in Las Vegas at the Sahara in the 60s. They were amazing. I have such great memories we saw so many stars Elvis Presley Tom Jones Perry Como I can go on and on, but the rat pack was certainly one of the finest act we ever saw thank you God for all the blessings and may their soul rest in peace amen
This almost makes me cry. These guys are able to joke around about race relations, because they are good friends. It feels like we have gone backwards. :(
WE HAVE !!! They were great friends & there's a story about Frank & Dean, they heard that the hotel/ casino wouldn't let Sammy Davis in thru the front door, that he had to enter like all blacks who worked there, thru the back. So the guys got ahold of the front desk & management to tell them that either Sammy was allowed to enter thru the front doors with them or like them 8or they were leaving & would never play there again.... So low & behold Sammy was allowed to enter thru the front doors & so were "all" the other black employees, know why ? They'd lose too much money & also, didn't want to take a chance of the other employees being backed by The Rat Pack....
@@MrRubberchicken21, nope... Dean didn't drink when he was going onstage and was a very light drinker even offstage. That was all just part of his act.
I've noticed that back then and even years before they all came into existence, being overly talented, and what they would call a triple threat today, was common across the board in the entertainment business regardless of race, background or gender! Hence the reason that I have so many diverse all time favorite artists and entertainers!
I was never sure about Carson but now l am and l don't like racists. I am old enough to remember all of these very gifted people but l am appalled by the racisim that was prevalent then. Carson to Sammy Davis...... What's it like to sit at the back of the bus? Disgusting.
Watch it again. That wasn't Carson to Sammy. It was Sammy to Dean. The same voice that said "What's it like to sit in the back of the bus!" also said a moment later "Let's give Dean a chance!" That's what makes it funny!
One of the best live concerts you will ever see. Humour, love and respect for each other and a genuine friendship that is rarely seen among top entertainers... NO egos here. Just class and fun...
RIP Frank Sinatra (December 12, 1915 - May 14, 1998), aged 82 RIP Dean Martin (June 7, 1917 - December 25, 1995), aged 78 RIP Johnny Carson (October 23, 1925 - January 23, 2005), aged 79 RIP Sammy Davis Jr. (December 8, 1925 - May 16, 1990), aged 64 You will be remembered as legends.
As a person in his 50's, having watched SDJ, FS and DM in films, I'm unsure why I'm so nostalgic when I see these guys together. Can it just be a simple as four mates having a laugh, four guys who genuinely loved\liked each other, I think so, I really do.
I love the fact, that even though it is a product of its time, that Sammy Davis Junior almost always took centerstage. I wish we had an entertainer alive today as versatile and as talented as he was.
In my opinion, one of the very closest we have had although sadly, no longer with us, was the brilliant Roy Castle. I have often thought that - what a performer!
As a child in the 60's & 70's I loved the rat pack. Dean was so funny and smooth, Sammy was just so damn talented, and Frank no words to describe him.. Who Johnny could sing like that. I saw Frank in concert when he was at the Aire Crown Theater. I was an Andy Frain usher and loved it.
My Dad sounded just like Dean Martin singing. It was and still is beautiful to hear his voice on media. Brings tears to my eyes....rip my darling Dad. Rip Dean Martin.
I watch this recording whenever l need a little bit of sunshine in my life. The multi talented Sammy Davis Jnr does it for me every time. What a talent he had. I miss you Sammy, RIP.
My Beautiful very much missed Grandparents saw these fabulous boys and every show was superb together with Judy Garland ❤️❤️❤️❤️🎤 🎙️ 🎶 🎵 🎶 xxxx God Bless
George Vreeland Hill This is Becky Lawson and I totally agree with you! I miss Dean,Frank, Sammy and Johnny!!! Johnny Carson had a great voice for singing!! I didn't know that he could sing!!!
Always find new beautiful things every time I watched this video. Amazing group of talented people. A rare friendship has ever existed. The respectful and warmth atmosphere.etc., Simply beautiful to watch/witness. They’ll always be remembered. Thank you for uploading.
“THE RAT PACK!” Wow! Seeing them here reminds me of my childhood, laying on the floor as my parents & Nana watched them on tv, roaring w/ laughter at their antics! This is so heartwarming to watch these four men who obviously loved & respected each other, on stage, poking fun at one another & just having a great time! This was pure entertainment & so great to see Johnny Carson there too( he looked so young but then again they all did! Ha!)! This was so very long ago! “Thanks to UTUBE FOR ALWAYS GIVING US THE BEST VIDEOS/PHOTOS, ALLOWING US ALL TO RELIVE SPECIAL & FAVORITE MEMORIES!❤️
Holy Moly- they were not only outrageously hilarious-. But what talent they all possessed ! All superstars in their own rights- but as a Team- unbelievable ! Nothing was off the table and it didn’t matter- because they all truly respected and loved each other and the talents they brought to the act. ! Gosh I miss this !
These men were so much bigger than a group of singers on a stage, they knew how to truly engage with a crowd and make that crowd a part of their "act", they enjoyed themselves on stage and so they were able to entertain who's ever watching them, true artists.
I had no idea that Johnny Carson was so tight with these guys. I also always thought of him as being somewhat on the short side. Here he appears to be the tallest of the bunch. PLUS, I never heard him sing before!
The camaraderie/friendship/respect between Frank, Sammy and Dean was so genuine and heartwarming. Casual cracking jokes at each other all in good fun is just something no one can fake!
I have absolutely hated the song Frank Sinatra did called my way because it was all about him and what he wanted to do! I don't like the title of the song!
