To be fair the raven isn't meant to be scary but rather romantically sorrowful. A man mourning the death of his lover and him being tormented by his grief, here represented metaphorically by a physical raven.

The reading assumes that "The Raven" is a horror poem written in imagination by Edgar Allan Poe, when actually, according to the research I've done for many years, Poe had nothing whatsoever to do with the authorship of this poem--his claim to it being only a brazen scam. My evidence points to Mathew Franklin Whittier, younger brother of poet John Greenleaf Whittier, as the real author. He wrote it based on a real-life event, and it expresses his faith crisis in deep grief.
