The Raven Guard aren't edgy, they're angsty. The Night Lords are edgy. Corvus and the XIX's dower demeanor comes from the fact that they're noble souls fighting for good in a setting where all nobility merits is a painful death; along with the hypocrisy of their legion wanting to be liberators but having to fight for the greatest human tyrant in history. As opposed to the Night Lords who do... Night Lord stuff for laughs

That’s not really a noble soul though. Because their actions are still those of tyrants and hypocrites. At least the Blood Angel’s issue is that they are constantly fighting back the desire to rip open the nearest guardsman and use him as a portable drink. Corvus and his lot whine a whole lot about wanting to make things better, but none of them really get around to that properly, besides one single company who just causes chaos by uplifting an even remotely downtrodden population, damn the consequences for them and the entire sector.

I love the ravengaurd because they actually get shit done. As a huge military nerd myself, all of space marine legions are usually aren't vary tactical or realistic in terms of how you fight wars. The ravengaurd actually fight in ways you could actually see being practical aside from the double lighting claw look but hey you can't have everything. They feel more like special forces for astartes then regular marines which I love. The green berets of astartes which is a awesome concept.

Raven Guard are my favorite chapter because even though I never dressed like one, I was a goth at heart all throughout highschool. Nowadays, I love how fuckin' doofy they are. The First Founding book has a bit in it about how the Raven Guard psychically screen their aspirants and only admit the ones who are 100% pure of heart and dedicated to the principles of freedom and justice, and I think it's the funniest bit of 40k lore I've read all year. (As for Daemon Corax, I think the "giant bird demon" thing is a bit of fanon; the actual work this comes out of describes him as being perceived by another character as a giant, vaguely bird-shaped silhouette of solid shadow, which really does just sound like an evolution of his whole "Can disappear from mortal eyes like The Shadow" superpower he always had. We have no idea whether he's actually a bird demon or if that's just a spooky projection or something, and won't until GW puts out a mini, which will probably be never.) Also also, never let it be forgotten that as much as vocal 40k fandom mocks Kayvaan Shrike, his mini is by far the most popular Space Marine mini amongst online 40k women's fan groups.

So I started collecting Iron Ravens as my second army after i realized I liked shooting armies more than melee. I initially wanted to build blood angels and paint them as charcharadons, but got sidetracked and collected imp knights instead. It wasnt the lore or charm of the raven guard that drew me in, but the paint scheme and the chapter description for the iron ravens that did, plus a general hatred for lorgar

I think Raven Guard can be a lot cooler if they were aesthetically done better both in looks and in lore. I feel like if we had more exploration and intrigue into their chapter, they would be more fun. Like, imagine if the Raven Guard were known specifically targetting signs of corruption and slavery in the galaxy, where they act like secret police where they are stationed and try to wrestle between the issues of the imperium's desire of corruption and the Raven Guard's desire for freedom of all without putting themselves in serious trouble, like a inbetween of Salamanders and Ultramarines when it comes to civilian care. Hell, they'd be perfect as secret police or as spies commendeered by the Inquisition and you can explore that path. Focus less on the emo and dark aesthetic and more of the brighter side of the same coin to the Alpha Legion and Night Lords that was made a plot point in the books, as well harkening to Corvus' own beliefs. I also think it'd be neat if they try to use Corax to reinstate Malice as a player, like saying Malice used Corax's desire to destroy his tainted brothers and chaos after the raptor incident that Corax became a daemon primarch in his name by accident. I also definitely think giving Corax, as unlikey as it is, a model in his daemon form to play as for Raven Guard. Everyone who knows Raven Guard probably states that daemon Corax is their favorite part and that would definitely boost up popularity for the chapter and add alot of tragedy and intrigue to the current storyline without affecting too much stuff as he would probably stay hidden and do his own thing.

Imo corvus becoming a warp beast thing should've corrupted the raven guard geneseed into developing hints of avian features, like all their teeth fusing together and becoming slightly pointed, or sprouting some really coarse hair or feathers in some places. Maybe some of them begin to wear mk6 style helmets to hide an actual beak? Who knows? Giving them an air of mystery Space goths is boring when the whole setting has a gothic aesthetic

I think an easy step forward for them if they were to move away from the emo thing, would be to kinda draw inspiration from native american culture. The style of aggressive hit and run warfare would be a good fit, you could still keep the long, dark hair, but make visual improvements, and the raven is overall pretty significant to many first nations myths. I think it would be a cool way to expand the faction, and a great source of inspiration.

I think the main problem with the raven guard is bad writing. The dropsite massacre for all intents and purposes wrote them out of the Heresy. Then Damocles happened and we got used as a punching bag then as well. I think the main tragedy of the raven guard is that they are fighting for a dream that has long been dead. Corax himself wanted to retire when the Great Crusade was over. The Raven Guard are liberators and punishers, but in the end tyrants and despots will always exist because they are simply human. As they say - poeer corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Going back to my previous point, it almost seems like thw writers at GW dont know what to do with them because if their operations are successful, practically no one will know about it. And thats the problem. Even some of the Raven guard's own history has been left unrecorded. They kinda just have one story type which is the typical spec ops stuff, the main exceptions being when they get paired with other chapters like the white scars or other imperial forces. That being said, the raven guard are being more prominent in 10th edition with the lore in the leviathan book. Hopefully this is a good sign and not some excuse to basically give us the devastation of Baal treatment

I play Raven Guard for the edge and lore. I know what I'm about and stealthy, angsty, super soliders in POWER ARMOR of all things is 100% my aesthetic. Corax is one of the better primarchs in my opinion. Flawed yet trying to do the right thing while getting put through the wringer of the crusade and the following heresy. Then the sheer level of murder hatred he has for the traitor legions turned him into an incredibly baddass raven monster of vengeance, allowing him to take the fight into the warp... that's hardcore. Aa for the Raven Guard themselves, I like how they go about their business in fighting. The whole stealth and subterfuge to weaken the enemy before going in for the killing blow is pretty neato. Despite all the shit they got thrown at them the Ravens endured through it all with the tenacity of their primarch by angsting and brooding along the way but I find that relatable. Fingers crossed for the return of Corax in all his warp monstrosity glory! Also get dunked on Night Lords lmao

Birb Bois have their angsty goth aesthetic, but underneath there's a strong potential identity built around their liberating slave roots, extensively using special forces tactics, working closely with and respecting mortal soldiers, a humanitarian ideal and generally being smarter and saner than their cousins. A little like if Vulkan ran the Alphas. Just like the Ultramarines, they are intelligent and responsive strategists who are well suited to fighting a war and they do not forget why (and for who) they fight. Although just like the Ultramarines, the meme that forms around them completely avoids mentioning anything of what makes them interesting...

Was I a emo kid in the mid 2000? Yes. But at the time I did not like Raven guard and I played black Legion. I do play Raven guard now, but I find myself as well as most ravengard fans do not collect them for their emo aesthetic. Like most allegiance, people like to picture them as a caricature of what they truly represent. Instead, we appreciate the Raven guard for being an under-appreciated legion. They have appreciation for civilian life like the salamanders, a berserker like rage similar to the blood angels and the humility of the white scars. Add that their thing is to fight against the oppressor and the tyrant, and you have one of the very few factions in this universe that could be considered good guys. The Raven guard also have their own culture that is not similar to any Terran culture throughout history. They have the tri-fold path and their own little sign language. If you are reading this and are interested in, it is worth the dive into their lore

Corvus explaining why he immediately joined the Imperium after spending his whole life opposing tyranny: Like, him totally not becoming a mutant (wink wink) is cool and all, but in terms of actual characterisation, he would be a lot more interesting if he was shown reflecting on this contradiction and trying to rationalize it. At least Jagatai he didn't want to do it but knew his world would be curbstomped if he opposed the Emperor and when the time to rise up finally came he was pretty bummed out to find out Chaos was his only option and HAD to stay loyal for the good of humanity, fighting for a Tyranny he hated against a brother he loved. Angron was more of less kidnapped and subverted the Legion into his personal anger outlet relatively quickly. With Corvus he went from rebel to subjugating worlds as soon as he met daddy, which might be the point, but it's boring.

I think it's canon that most (?) marine legions/chapters have a bunch of small dudes following them around and do things like: hand them swords, remove blood from their swords, hold unholy books for them. That one Smelly Legion lord even has a nurgling specifically to carry his helmet around. You think all those skulls, candles, sculls, seals, skulls, torches, skulls, flaps of flayed skin etc. just stay on by themselves? This shit needs attention. Especially the skulls. "Forgive me, sire, thine backpack candles need replacing, they'll soon burn out!" I'm sure the Raven Guard have small people specifically to take care of their hair - it's probably one of those creepy-as-fuck servitor cherubs, but with raven wings and shit. I bet they distribute assorted bird bits too, if the previous ones got destroyed or lost. Also, for sure the Space Wolves have small guys carry around a keg of beer. If not, somebody needs to make them one, dammit. Or, like, those Saint Berdard dogs that supposedly carry a small bottle of booze around their necks to revive the victims of cold. Only it's, you know, a giant wolf probably. And the bottle is a keg. Or several.

Avid Ravenguard player checking in. So, I love the Emo Boy memes. I find them charming. I've never really seen the RG as "EDGY", I think Night Lords, Drukhari, Emperor's Children and the Slaaneshy Daemons pretty much have that title on lock.. I think what drove me to playing RG was, I wanted to play a legion with armor that actually provided some form of practicality. Like, the Imperial Fists and Blood Angels for example, always seemed so strange with their brightly colored armor to me.. And you always here stories about how Astartes will have a group of Intercessors drop down to a planet and take out an entire fleet with no casualties on their squad. So, In my mind, I liked the idea of them being a stealth operative, wearing like black for night missions or forest green/camo print for day missions. Which, low and behold, the RG do both! 🤓 And Corvus Corax is an absolute BADASS!! They suffered more than most coming outta the Drop Site Massacre, then the tales of Corax trying to bring his legion back to full strength at Ravenspire, (spoiler alert) it ends up terrible and Corvus ended up killing over 200 chaos mutated sons that were crying out to him as he was slaughtering them and dude never recovered from that.. Shit's depressing. The RG have earned the right to be sad boys.. And now in current lore Corvus is a super badass shadow demon in the warp slaughtering CSM and freeing slaves? On his way to personally sever the head from Lorgar Aurelian's body? FUCK YES!! From the shadows we strike. VICTORUS AUT MORTIS!

I personally love the aesthetics of the Raven Guard, especially the beak helmets. Black is also one of my favorite colors, so there's that. And I like the idea of a more stealthy legion that focuses on guerrilla warfare and hit n run tactics as oppose to the typical space marines charging into battle while autistically screeching "FOR THE EMPEROR". From a lore standpoint I also love how they'll often prioritize rescuing civilians above all, while also remaining one of the more humble chapters despite their accomplishments. At the end of the day though, if we can have pretty boy vampires (Blood Angels) and edgy Batman wannabes (Night Lords) then we can have goths in power armor.

Ravenguard to me epitomise an old phrase i hear tossed around the 40k community from time to time, "a squad of marines can take over an entire planet", and i think the Ravenguard are that in a nutshell. No excessive displays of military might, no ego driven charges into the enemy's frontlines, just a squad of dudes, silently and efficiently dismantling the power structure of a planet without even being seen, with armor strong enough to make killing them a near impossible task for normal humans. 40k vet here: The thing with Raven Guard is the literal emo aesthetic didn't really exist until the Primaris upgrade sprue, which seemed like a literal joke. Raven Guard have clear gothic elements (literally the Raven by Edgar Allen Poe is kind of the visual and grim-dark theme they inherited), you can argue being pale with dark hair as being literal "goth" as well - but that was never my view early on. Early on the Raven Guard kind of had this almost Italian vibe to them, with their names being very Italian - thus the dark hair and pale features isn't far off from people of Italy and south-eastern Europe. A couple guys in the heresy novels had south Slavic sounding names which fit this physical aesthetic too. The chapter are the ambush, assassination, saboteur marines. They had kind of a partisan vibe going, which made sense because Corvus basically led a guerilla war on Deliverance iirc. And again, Yugoslavia, Italy, France, etc, had massive partisan movements (and generally are pale with dark hair as the norm). To me the gothic vibe was the undertone, an ode to classic horror that gave its influence to 40k as a whole. But Raven Guard are not an army of emos. If anything they are as close to real life U.S Marines, Navy Seals, Spec Ops, as we get. They use infiltration to get close without the enemy knowing, then eviscerate them before they can respond. They use all the tactical gear at their disposal, they are cunning, they are ruthless to their enemies. They ARE the MARINE in SPACE MARINE. But like many chapters the Raven Guard never had the theme fully hammered down. So different people write or design them in different ways. The Forge World guys did a good job and understood the practical, realistic vision of tactical Space Marines. George Mann wrote a lot of their short stories back in the day, and he made them somber marines, rather than anything close to angsty or emo or whatever. But yes you had guys at GW who knew the emo joke and for whatever reason ran with it to give us the comical heads and names for gear and weapons. So really it's up to you how you view the Raven Guard. Are they Spec Ops who have a gothic undertone? Or are they Space goths who have a space ops undertone? For me it's always been the former, I don't even recognize the later except as a joke. If I ever return to Raven Guard you can bet my marines will be militaristic looking with the odd death imagery here and here. Kind of like how US marines frequently wore the Punisher logo in desert storm.

I play Raven Guard and I want to clear some stuff up 1) Emo≠goth, very different cultures 2) Raven Guard most certainly are not listening to emo rock. They’re going to be blasting Flesh God Apocalypse on the battle field with the aftermath consisting of vibing to Type O Negative and training to Nine Inch Nails 3) Corvus Corax is not a warp daemon. That’s a misconception/meme. He is still primarch/human, he’s just using warp magic to enhance his abilities with the magic being presented in a raven like way. You can read the short story yourself, it’s not long. 4) Fuck Lorgar

Ok Arthur asked for our thoughts so I'm going to gush for a while: Raven Guard are probably my favorite loyalist chapter. Part of this is admittedly just the fact I like their armor and bird motif, and the nostalgia I have for them from the McNeill Ultramarines series where they're portrayed really well I feel. That being said, they also aren't COMPLETE goth edgelords. Their mindset is actually fairly interesting, and most of their assassination and stealth tactics come from the fact that they don't like killing civilians and innocents and want to minimize casualties. They often attach small units to Imperial Guard or other mortal forces because they want to protect them, and their command structure is pretty loose because each individual marine is expected to make their own tactical decisions, meaning the average Raven Guard marine needs to actually have a functioning brain as well as common sense...which is more than can be said for a lot of chapters. They're honestly a lot like the Salamanders, but significantly more socially awkward so it doesn't come across as easily. I also find it kinda funny that some of them can actively hear the voices of their dead brothers, but instead of being tormented by them the ghosts of their friends generally just offer encouragement. TL;DR, they have a very edgey exterior but an oddly wholesome interior. Still, whoever did their head sculpts at GW needs to have a serious think about their life choices.

I think the benefits of the raven guard like the ultramarines at times are seen in their successors than the main chapter itself. For example the raptors (raven guard successors) are basically Spartans from halo, while the silver templars focus on the more aristocratic and “proper” elements of the ultramarines focusing on duels and more focused warfare (very emperors children of them if I am being honest). The raven guard are neat, if I a bit goofy, and like the blood angels they need to tone down some of the gimmicks in my opinion.

I did my waiting, 18 legions of it. The thing about the Ravenguard is that to me at least they're dutiful without ego, they do great deeds and really don't care much if people realise they did it or not which is unusual amongst Space marines, a good example is of course Nikona. Their ability to operate independantly, each company essentially does what it wants and has operational autonomy away from Chapter command and to value the usefulness of that flexibility and pragmatism like you mentioned with the Raptors. Their anti-tyranny sentiments (The whole 6th company is devoted to de-throning tyrants) appeals to me alot and just in general I enjoy the uncoventional warfare (and the mild comedy of 8ft super soldiers being capable of disappearing) Corax is baller as well as primarchs go, his attempts to help his legion only going to ruin is tragic and sets the tone for them nicely I think. I must admit we got a little shafted with the emo heads in the new sculpts but if you look at older ravenguard models, thats not the aesthetic originally (I suspect they were going for a winter-soldier vibe and its just... yeah) I did headswaps on mine to beakies (or for unhelmeted ones I went for other space marine options with more high and tight hair cuts) I paint mine with a leaner aesthetic, tilting more onto that operator vibe. The Heresy stuff is particularly good with the Moritat squads & Mor Deythan. I understand they're not for everyone though and some of the 'woe is me' aspects of the lore are a turn off but I've yet to see a legion with 100% cringless lore. Appreciate all the videos, they've been good to watch. :D even if you think my boys are cringey

Gw sculptors from that era weren't able to pull off a face unless it was square and angry. I like the idea of the Ravens. A stealthy space marine is terrifying when done right, like a gorilla becoming a martial artist/gymnast. The whole emo/ninja deal doesn’t fit. The idea of a mark of armor built to move faster, quieter at the expense of power and protection is interesting. The idea of an 8+ foot tall, 2000 lb black suit of armor perfectly blending into the shadows is ridiculous. I think it should have been given some sort of chameleon color changing ability which renders it more stealthy yet delicate.
