In this episode of HUNTR Podcast, we bring on Randy Birdsong to talk all things deer hunting with us. Randy started his journey in the outdoor industry from a young age, filming for the show "Whitetail Freaks" to now producing shows like "King of the Raven" and "Head Hunters TV." Randy is a very passionate hunter when it comes to whitetails. He's not only spending time in the woods during the season but in the off-season too, focusing on land management projects and creating the ultimate whitetail habitat. Randy shares the challenges of hunting in Missouri, one of the most recent issues being the overpopulation of wild hogs. There's a lot of issues within hunting when it comes to the state and the limited resource provided to us. We can only hope these discussions can raise awareness and get other hunters talking. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

Here is the rule I hold to. You need to manage for legacy timber on your land. What I mean is, it's harder to maintain and keep good timber and at the same time have excellent deer habitat. You can't have both. Deer love to eat the money making trees. If you're not protecting your timber from deer and invasives then in a few generations you'll have junk growing all over the place. Most people want to manage just for deer because that's what they care about more. They are not looking down the road to thier grandkids. You can always supplement food for deer with plots and other methods. But going in and creating browse soley for deer or hinge cutting just for the possibility that a deer might sleep on your land and not the neighbors costs more money than most people realize. There is also the opposite side of the spectrum. There are deer hunters out there that love hunting in big woods that they hate the fact of a cut happening on the land they hunt. The trees become sentimental and nostalgic and would rather see those trees die and fall over by natural means than reap the benefits of money and even better deer hunting.

I've been working on cutting my family's property and mine. Totaling close to 250 acres. Most all of it is old growth forest. We cut 30 acres 6 years ago at 14" minimum and it took almost every tree. But it made an excellent deer sanctuary. Out of the past 4 years of shed hunting on close to 300 acres. 95% of all the sheds I've found have been in or on the edge of the cut we did 6 years ago.

I battle wild hogs without end, have a RU-vid channel, made 2 DVDS and written in countless hunting magazines about them. You need to have me on your podcast just to discuss wild hogs 👊

I don’t know if it will benefit financially but we hired a forester for our Missouri ground. He is helping with certain projects and building a portfolio on our timber value as we do the select cuts.

Hogs love corn soaked in diesel, not sure of any other animal that eats it.

LSU is working with a bait and delivery system that contain sodium nitrate. It’s used for as a meat preservative on our food but is toxic to hogs. It’s Pelletized with ground up fish and delivered in a feeder that takes a lot of force to access, preventing non target animals from accessing it. Texas legalized warfarin to poison hogs but was outlawed due to birds scavenging on the dead hogs. Warfarin is a blood pressure medication. I think it’s in the process of being legalized again in Texas.

I've hunted the Ozarks nearly 30 years. All of my good bucks have come from there and generally on public land. Glad to see someone shed light on that region. Not easy hunting but there's good bucks to be had.

It would have been interesting to hear you guys discuss crossbows with Randy because I have seen him use one on headhunters. Maybe he had an injury idk. Regardless we’ve been doing some cuts ourselves and trying to get our logger back who started to timber some of our property but all I have heard is that timber prices are down in SW PA and Central PA. Do you guys know anything about that? Is that true? Great pod!

@HUNTRPOD I don't know if it will on hogs, but for sure on raccoons and any thing else that gets a few licks of it. They only make it about 5-10ft and they are done.
