In this episode of HUNTR Podcast, we connect with Troy Pottenger, an absolute killer when it comes to whitetail deer. Troy shares his experiences hunting the mountains of Idaho, where winters are harsh and there's tons of wild game around. While the topography and terrain might be different where we primarily hunt, the addiction to chasing mature bucks remains the same. The passion and pursuit of mature whitetails is something that constantly burns within us, always trying to achieve the goal of harvesting such an animal. It's not an easy task to accomplish with the amount of work involved. Truly putting your woodsmanship skills to the test reading sign, scouting, gathering intel, and ultimately putting yourself in the mind of a mature buck. There's so much that goes into it, and that's what we discuss on the show with Troy.

Troy has mentioned in other podcasts that he baits deer in WA during late season. He sets up his mock scrapes by the bait. In some of his videos you can see the buck coming in to the bait.

I can most certainly second the fact that cougars are way over populated in Washington state! my favorite deer area in the last 10 years have went from 50 deer in the spring to 5 deer in the spring with four or five different cats running around. It was a rarity to see a cat on camera running 20 cameras in national forest and now each camera has multiple tom's that are extremely well feed! Are season to give you an example runs from septembar 1st to April 31st. Here's the pathetic thing! there's only 160 to 210 shot per year. And they damn near give the tag away! They got rid of hound hunting in the population completely imploded on itself

Big whitetail hunter here from Illinois. I lived near spokane for a few years and met Troy when I was out there. Great guy always willing to help and loves talkn whitetails. It wa funny was watchn this podcast and I kept thinkn I know this guy. The panhandle is an amazing area and definetly one of the hardest places to kill a mature whitetail.

Knocked this episode out of the park guys!! Not happy about it but the food insecurities that Troy brought up look like a reality. Such a great dive into whitetails with a humble blue collar assassin

Love the show fellas Keep up the great work. So I Lost my Ohio lease two years ago and decided to hunt Ohio public using Troy’s strategy. I ended up Killing a hammer over a scrape that I had setup this past summer. This will forever be a strategy of mine. I also switched to a saddle and sticks that weigh only 6.5 lb and absolutely love it. IMO it’s more versatile than having to run a Lock On.

I’ve got some private land in Kentucky to hunt and had consistent pictures of a bachelor group with 3 shooters with the big boy in the 170’s maybe 180. I was getting pictures everyday and all the sudden “Hank” disappeared. They were coming to a feeder 3-4 times daily and pictures started showing up saying he was shot 8 miles away in September all the while the others still hitting the feeder 3-4 sometimes 5 times a day. They got a confession from the ole boy as he shot him with a rifle September 27th at 2:30a.m. And the only reason he confessed is the gate camera for the neighbors driveway. Him and his partner parked right across the road from it and went and got the deer and it’s plain and clear video of faces dragging the deer to truck and loading it up.

I hunt northern PA, one of the places you can actually find 5+ year old buck in PA. I can imagine how difficult it is to hunt where he hunts, but its just on a completely different scale. My mountains are 500 to 2000ft, its all thick bushy beautiful woods, but its only a couple hundred thousand acres not a couple million

So I hear you talking about not wanting to shoot any does. What do you think an ideal Buck to Doe ratio is? Why kill no does at all?

Then get picked off by deer while you are hanging, swinging and moving around to much. Everyone likes different things but I'm sticking to my stand.

Granted I have more lock on experience, but depending on tree I'd say a lock on is a faster set. Especially if using one 500lb cam buckle for the stand

Those biologists lack common sense. They are book smart but the issue is they have no true real life experience. Agree with this guy. This is my first year bow hunting deer and I respect the animal so much more. It spends its life trying not to die.

To say a saddle isn't as good as a lone wolf tree stand is the most preposterous thing I've ever heard. There are certainly those rare circumstances where a gang in is better. I have both and I haven't used my lone wolf since buying a saddle. Not sure if Jared has hunted out of a saddle or if he's just throwing shit against the wall. The weight reduction matters for 99% of hunters, the ability to hide behind the tree 100% matters, slipping into a thick spot is way easier and way quieter, with a ring of steps the simplicity of a 360° shot is way better than a stand, and I'll guarantee it's quieter than setting up a lone wolf. I can say that from experience. Drives me nuts that fits throw their option out there on something they've never tried. The vast majority of people who try a saddle never turn back. That's no coincidence.

Hey dude, Jared here. I gave it a solid effort. 10+ sets and just never could get comfortable with it. All preference at the end of the day but for me, it's a hang on any day.
@jnewsome025

@@HUNTRPOD glad to hear that. At least you gave it a try. I don't believe you mentioned it in the podcast. If you did, my fault. I missed it. Most guys who are bashing saddles have never even tried one. I can respect a guys opinion when both options have been tested out. I hated my saddle initially until I truly learned how to use it, and machine it's benefits. Like I said, I think the vast majority of people who have actually tried a hang on vs saddle would disagree with you. Everyone I know who uses a saddle highlights the same benefits that I outlined. At the end of the day, you're right. It is personal preference. I mean, there's still guys who truly believe a climber is the best option. The way it was portrayed, on both your behalves, was an emphatic "hang ons are way better."

Wolf reintroduction wasn't until 96-97, elk herd in selway had already been on decline since peak in the 70's Due mostly to habitat loss. Furthermore just because the population was so high doesn't mean it is healthy for herd or the habitat. Overpopulation of any species is not good for the ecosystem. The quickest way to lose hunting is to ignore facts for propaganda.
