Mike Thurston is a podcaster, RU-vidr and a fitness model.
Mike and I went to university together 15 years ago. And yet in 2024 many of the problems we encountered back then have gotten even worse. Why is a lack of confidence, overly comparative mindsets and body dysmorphia so persistent and how do we go about fixing it?
Expect to learn why male body dysmorphia is on track to overtake female body dysmorphia, what Mike's relationship with social media looks like right now, where you actually gain confidence from, whether being super highly followed on the internet makes you more or less self-assured, how your priorities should change as you get older, Mike’s thoughts on Sam Sulek and much more...

The conversation you had with Mike at around 27:00 I can relate heavily. When I have conversations with friends and family, I usually would love to dive into the topic and really talk about whatever it is in the moment and throw out questions about it. Once we reach an area where we do not have any idea about, I would ask about opinions and how they feel about it. Sometimes I get responses like "I do not know anything about it so I don't have an opinion" or "I do not know anything about it so I don't want to talk about it.". Though I can understand from their perspective that they may be exhausted from the conversation from thinking but just because you don't know much about a topic doesn't mean it has to stop there.

You have to be hooked to the endorphin rush and other positive effects in order to stick with working out. To me it’s easy to work out daily as it makes me feel pretty good and I look better than 99.7% of the people in my age range. Oh and I’m stronger too But yeah most people are too lazy to workout - that’s why most people are fat

I’m with Mike - I truly cannot understand why any guy that is physically able but doesn’t exercise .. I’m in the Midwest and when I go out I rarely see guys(or girls) that are even in decent shape - it’s usually the opposite. I’m struggling trying to remember the last jacked guy I’ve seen out and about . It’s just rare . You take the average 20-30 year old guy or gal and I bet they don’t exercise aside from walking around the kitchen Quality of life is boosted in many via daily exercise

@@justinbraegelmann4310agree completely. I’m honestly scratching my head when I hear the stats regarding men’s lack of interest in dating or sex - I hear many of them online complaining that women are only interested in the top 5% or that women are too masculine or other nonsense .. it’s bullshit as many women(of all types) are very willing to meet guys and talk and hook up etc etc . In fact I’ve heard quite a few women over the past decade or so complain that men aren’t approaching them! I try to get younger guys to understand this but it’s like they are trying everything in their ability to justify not even trying . Now that is bizarre

Jacked guys are 1 in 1000. Guys with good fashion are 1 in 300. I think it's because men aren't taught about looking good beyond the basic (e.g. Wearing a suit when going to a formal event). As for women they're constantly being told to dress up and look good

I propose that one of the things that works towards making a person like Mike so appealing IS the fact he is introverted. I don't think being an introvert is a deficit for being a communicative, open personality. I suggest instead it's something that contributes to attracting a certain type of people, including perhaps other introverts.

*It's quite strange for me to hear the things being said in the beginning of this conversation in regards to beating yourself up because you don't look as good as you used to look, because I was chubby in my teens, fat and unhealthy throughout my twenties into my early thirties, and only now at the age of 36 have I finally got in shape. Now obviously I would have looked better had i got in shape when i was younger, but I can honestly say that my body looks better than it has ever looked and I'm feeling great about it. So in a strange way, I almost feel fortunate that I took this long to get healthy.*

Interesting to hear how guys feel about ageing too. A common piece of advice I hear from older people whenever I'm being self critical, is that I will look back at myself in 20/30/40 years with much kinder eyes. So I try to remember that, and appreciate what I have now. ...Actually that applies to life in general too not just physical appearance.

Having a child is not an end goal, they grow and evolve and learn with u, and ur never prepared enough. Just jump and enjoy the ride and u will look back at the things u think are important now and realize just how much u grow from truly putting your child’s needs in front of your own.

The bar in reality is low but the bar on social media is absurd. In addition to photo shop the number of women that have had "work done" is unbelievable. I have no intention of throwing shade, yet as a woman who is choosing to age naturally, trying to compare ourselves to others that are choosing certain procedures can be crazy making. You have to keep focusing on character and things that matter. No matter how you look, this is what draws people to you, sincerity and putting yourself to service, being a shoulder for those you love.

Mike - in regards to what you said about relationships - as a person who has been married for +10 years and still feels like I'm on a honeymoon :), I'll say this: a relationship needs to be worked on from start to finish, sure - but... contrary to appearances, it's nothing hard. It just requires sytematicity (like the gym) and communication. So being a podcaster and looking the way you look, you won't have a problem with that. Of course, you have to make some concessions and not everything will always be perfect. But if the couple has similar goals (or a common goal) COMMUNICATES with each other and each party continues to care about being attractive to the other, the rest will work itself out. For example - our vision of the perfect evening is a glass of wine, good music and the opportunity to sit together and talk. If you find someone with whom (after a year of being together) you still have a ton of things to talk about - then you've good :). Best of luck in your search of "the one".

I don’t want to hate, but I find it wild how people sit on RU-vid and make people rich by watching them do things, rather than doing things themselves. It’s kinda sad. No disrespect to these guys, but damn, it makes me want to continue going out and living my life and do the things I enjoy. The thought of millions of people watching a handsome guy live a “dream life” is kind of a symptom of what’s going on these days. I like some of the more intellectual podcasts, such as what Peterson puts out, but goodness sakes I bet our anscestors would have never thought in a million years that someone could get rich off of a lifestyle RU-vid channel. It’s insane. What a crazy time we live in. Let’s go out an live our life instead of watching others live theirs!!❤

The problem is many of of these 'male models' with big muscles are not all being honest. Not just with editing pictures, but all the 'supplements' and/or 'gear' (drugs) they are taking. Therefore, giving young males the impression of working hard gives you these gains, it does not, so many young lads are chasing an unachievable goal (with out 'help')!

True but most guys can still build a nice looking and strong body. Most guys don’t even seem To want that these days and they’d rather play videogames

@@brianmeen2158 Genes play a massive part in building/gaining muscles, alongside diet and of course exercise itself! And where do you get that opinion from concerning the videogames over fitness?

I couldn't agree more with the first point of this video. The transformation I had from skinny fat to fit, gave me a lot of confidence. My transformation after that was never the same. I was never satisfied after that. Although I know there is a change, it just never seems enough. But still, I show my fitness journey on my RU-vid channel and I show the reality of getting fit and staying healthy...

If you have body dysmorphia you very likely have too much time on your hands and not enough important responsibilities or you work in an industry that revolves around physical appearance. That’s why it’s more common among teens and young adults. Too much time on your hands, too much social media, not enough important responsibilities. In fact I would argue that body dysmorphia is developed when you have too much luxury and comfort. Imagine one of your biggest problems in life is worrying if you look good or not.
@vladutzuli
@vladutzuli 5 месяцев назад
Nah. Just because it can happen that way it doesn't mean it always happens that way. I work very long days in a well paid industry and have plenty of responsibilities to juggle. But I always had an extremely active metabolism and looked like a twig (to the point where my body weight literally has not changed between the ages of 16 and 26 when I started working out). And after I finally decided to put an end to it and really really work my ass off at the gym, I now live in perpetual paranoia that unless I work out like crazy and eat until I feel sick I will deflate like a balloon and go back to having no interest from women and no respect from men (like when I was a super skinny teen).

I am not sure but it would be interesting if body dysmorphia occurs at a much higher rate in wealthier areas..? Surely there is data on this

Your idea about having a show where you know nothin about the guests is the same as the "Tommy Tiernan Show" in Ireland. It's a TV interview and he doesn't know which guest is coming and it's all improvised conversation. Very good watch.

“I feel like it's quite hard to be confident when you have no money in your account” Confidence is self worth. How happy you are with who you are. You get big swinging dick over confidence that manifests as EGO. And you get quiet confidence from someone who's at peace but doesn't feel the need to brag about it. You don't need to be a millionaire to give yourself permission to like yourself. Maybe Mike does (there's no *one* way) but just wanted to get this down. Money ≠ Confidence. Being proud of yourself = Confidence.
@brianmeen2158
@brianmeen2158 5 месяцев назад
Exactly! There have been times where I was working part time yet was self confident for the most part. I think this is where the wealth trap happens with some - once you start making good $$ you start to equate your self worth or confidence to it and the more successful people you hang out with - the more money you need to make in order to feel ok. That is not a race or Game I want to play

Hi Chris ans Video guy Dean. Love the show. There is something called the Aquatic Ape theory which I think you might find interesting. Its a theory of how we became bipedal (standing on two legs) by wading through rivers/ eating little bits of sea food to enlarge our brains. It was controversial for years as it opposed Savannah theory- the idea that we stood up in deserts to hunt for animals. :)

I can remember when I was a muscular young man in my early 20's. I was SO strong. I loved it. Then I hurt my back and lost most of my shape and strength. I rehabbed my back pretty well and decided to get back in shape in my mid 30's. I was so lean and muscular, it was crazy. Now, at 41, all of that has shrunk away... I miss lean, ripped me... I am reinvigorating my exercise routine for another try, but I know I won't be even close to what I was before... My back has basically given up and being 41 has finally impacted my energy levels. But, I guess that is how aging works. I kinda feel for Chris. He has gotta be hating the 35+ slowdown. I am sure he likes his body as much as I like mine. It has got to be getting hard to maintain. Stay massive, everyone!

At 29 I’ve got friends complaining about aging. It’s a different reality when you actually take care of yourself though. Opposite to what people think, you stand to gain more from fitness as you age. Even if it’s harder, I think it balances out.

Look into carnivore. I look 10 years younger and have the energy to workout longer than when I was 20 and never get sore after workouts. Not to mention my hormones have balanced with an unbelievable body recomposition. It might sound crazy and simple, and that's because it is crazy simple.
