Another important point is that like he mentioned everyone knows pretty much all of the IP addresses for popular VPNs including foreign governments. When I spent time living and studying in China where having a VPN is a must all of the popular VPNs including Nord (which had the balls to charge me a $7 international fee) and Express were blocked whenever there was a politically sensitive event (which was frequent) and the only VPN that I could get to work was a shitty free browser extension one that I had as backup. Every time I see an influencer talk about how they can help you escape gov censorship I die a little inside knowing that VPNs are not a magic tool but they are just (usually monitored) information pipelines to the outside world that are known about and can be shut off.

The *only* instance I have found “military grade” things to be better than commercial grade are in the night vision world. Night vision intensifier manufacturers like L3Harris and Elbit Systems of America will purposely bin intensifiers that meet 18UM military spec requirements. Everything below these thresholds get sold on the civilian/commercial market. Typically, these commercial intensifiers have small blemishes or “dark spots” inside. A lot of people will choose to save $400-500 and simply buy commercial spec intensifiers for their NVG’s.

VPN good to prevent random dudes from looking at what you do on internet in public. VPN good to prevent internet service provider from seeing your website stuff. VPN good for hiding IP and allowing access to otherwise blocked content. VPN gives data to VPN company instead. VPN claims they don't keep data. Trust factor is added. Basically you don't really have more privacy with VPN than without as you're simply transferring it over to the VNP servers so don't know what is collected, but it is more secure when using a public unsecured wi-fi vs not using VPN. VPNs can be used to mask your location but not reliably.

I always find it funny when VPN companies act like they’re “outsmarting” companies like Netflix when you get to access region-locked content. The reality is Netflix doesn’t give a shit and might actually be happy you got to see the region locked stuff (so you continue to use their service to watch the shows you want). The reason it’s region locked is due to contract terms when they produced the show. Netflix definitely knows plenty of people use VPNs to bypass region locks - if they wanted to they could easily just blacklist all VPN IPs from using Netflix but they don’t. VPN companies aren’t “outsmarting” anyone.

I have a bit of a conspiracy theory that some of these VPN companies simply shill for the likes of Netflix. Both parties get something out of it. They're even worse. Basically every piece of running software increases the chance of one of them having a security vulnerability. And in order to work malware scanners have to run with system privileges. So when one of them has a vulnerability a piece of malware can target that and easily gain entrance to your system. This has happened in the past and will keep happening.

That’s just not true. Nowadays that windows has its own anti malware scanner that works very well yes it’s kind of true, because Windows Defender does a very good job and replacing it with another anti virus isn’t going to help. But in general anti virus is very good at detecting known malware. Which is 99%+ of attacks an average consumer and most companies will face. Even most complicated attacks will eventually just upload and execute a piece of known malware to your computer or server. So even if the actual vulnerability isn’t patched it adds a layer of protection. The thread of facing an attack that will leverage your anti malware is very small compared to the chance that it will stop a known malware from running. There is a reason a lot of liability insurance will require anti malware software. Yes anti malware isn’t very helpful against very targeted attacks by skilled hackers but that’s just something most companies and private persons don’t face. Security is always relative it’s not absolute and it’s a cost/benefits calculation. Every bike lock can be broken in seconds with the right tools. But yet you wouldn’t claim that locking your bike Is useless. Now if your running a Linux desktop antivirus is not needed because common viruses are just not developed for Linux because it has too few users so it’s not worth the effort for malware authors. It’s a different story for servers actually anti malware does a decent job of detecting bitcoin mining scripts, php shells and a lot of other stuff hackers will upload to Linux servers.

@coolwin7710 3 года назад
VPNs are not made for the "average consumer" they are made for people that have some sort of understanding on how networking works. @coolwin7710
@coolwin7710 2 года назад
@@Lowlightt The problem is that VPN ads spread misinformation, such as the fact that you can protect your privacy online. When you create an account with a VPN, chances are you are asked for an attribute that connects to your real identity. VPN ads state that a VPN is a magic tool that will protect your privacy and they are right and wrong. For example, if you use a VPN for gaming, you are increasing your security and privacy by hiding your IP address to prevent DDOS attacks and doxxing. However, if you sign up for a social media account on main platforms, you will be asked for a phone number, which is linked to your identity, which defeats the whole purpose.

You should also add that using VPN for circumventing geo lock is oftentimes against the service's ToS, so your account on, say, Netflix will get eventually banned (there are cases of that already) with no refund. Also, Tom Scott talked about this topic (don't remember the date, could be after this video). He was reached by a VPN provider, reviewed what he was supposed to say, made some changes not unlike what you made this video about, and the VPN provider refused to sponsor him with this modified pitch.

@TwoBs
@TwoBs 2 года назад
@@fsLeg That’s CrunchyRoll, though … you said Netflix. However, your point still _kinda_ stands, but I believe the ban isn’t solely for using a VPN unless the termination message of the account specifically states it as being the reason (which I haven’t seen yet). You have to remember: streaming sites with a monthly subscription check and log where your account is signing in from/accessing it. Ever sign up for something and later get a notification stating “a new device has logged in from (city, country)”? Most sites keep tabs on that stuff. When you sign up for these sites and enter payment information for the services, there’s usually a system in place to keep tabs on where you’re signing up from and they monitor where your devices connect from. For instance, mine will always show 2-3 certain devices that is connected from a local town that the IPs will always point to (a general area). It’s been that way for 8-9 years. Now if I start using a VPN and changing it to a different country every time I go to watch something, and start accessing the other profiles on the account from other countries through that VPN, as well, then the system isn’t going to flag me from using a VPN. The system is going to think my account has been “hacked” with my login information being abused. Continuously doing that and never having my usual IP on that account again is a good way to get the account removed, which is what I think these companies are doing instead. They don’t _know_ specifically what VPN you’re using or if you’re even using one. They’re just gonna’ think your account is no longer a yours and taking measure to lock said account. Forgot to add: The majority of VPNs are using banned IPs. That’s one way they’ll know (the only way they’ll really even know). If you’re using a VPN that a lot of others use and you connect to an IP they’ve banned, then yeah, they’ll think “VPN” or “abuse of the account login” or do a combo of the two and terminate. Lesson: stop using shitty VPNs. People saying they’ve been banned probably log in from the banned IPs using “free” VPNs and do it so often.

It was probably our modems all that time, because they were from the ISP itself and they're not known for being good. But use Tunngle and those problems ceased to be. Others can also join, so it's like the logged in option, except everything works. But the best thing about LAN working with something like Tunngle, is that you can go back and play the old version. Thank you SO MUCH for this. I'll definitely be referring people to your video, as you explain it a lot better than I do. I've been a network technician (certified at one time or in all of the big 3, with MCSE/MCSA being the only one I kept up with really) for a few decades, and while yes, I DO absolutely love VPNs for what they are... that's just it. I know what they are and what they aren't BECAUSE I have used them for work. The average consumer has no clue. Most of these ads so blatantly misrepresent what they are and can do that it makes me twitch.

Finally someone that understands what a VPN is. A VPN is useful for going on sketchy servers, mainly anarchy Minecraft servers or GTA 5 lobbies. They also don't mention that VPNs give you second class citizen status on the internet. You can't play on a lot of servers simply by having a VPN, also websites will constantly ask for a phone number. Also, VPNs are primary used by Pirates that want to ignore DMCA strikes. Companies or server owners use VPNs to add an extra layer of security. However, VPN ads on RU-vid state that if you use a VPN that tech companies won't be able to keep your data is simply false advertising.

Everything said in this video is stuff I've been saying for years. A VPN isn't a magic bullet to make you hidden or anonymous. Having a completely anonymous connection is incredibly difficult. Even setting up a VPN server yourself isn't enough (you still have to pay for hosting somehow, and even if you pay using an anonymous cryptocurrency like Monero, it still won't do your anonymity any good if you're the only person who uses that VPN server).

bandwidth would be the main issue, a 5mb average upload speed can't sustain much, you're in an extremely small minority if your yours is 50mb or higher. You could probably make it work with enough users but that would be way more than the onions we have right now
@wilfridtaylor

the problem is that you need to ask the server for whole files (unless you want half a website), so time correlation attacks are still a thing, since the server can log which entry points got the data, and then you could correlate which time packets of the same size got to the isp and now it may even be easier since you need less data. you might wanna look at the etherum network which might be capable of such since data isn't stored on a single server. also you still run into the freedom dilemma since making hiding easy for regular people is also making it easy for bad actors (though there's a fine line between heroic resistance and terrible terrorism.)

Those warnings (3:11) don't pop up when using unencrypted http, they pop up when there's something wrong with the cert the https site is providing, it even says so in the error message. All the warning most browsers give when going to an unencrypted http site is a little cross over the lock in the address bar.

This video absolutely nails it when it comes to commercial VPN companies. I run my own VPN servers using WireGuard on Hetzner. It's actually quite easy to get WireGuard running, once you consider these "peers" to be nothing but client/server in the actual client/server model. But while I do run my own VPN's, privacy or security was never part of my threat model. My goal was to string my own local networks together over the internet. Now, running my own VPN's over multiple VPN routers (which are not the same as those combo routers!) made me ask some questions. With my own VPN where I can always choose to route everything over a network I control, does the network I connect to still matter? My answer turned out to be no, with a caveat. My reason for this is not the ISP or the website knowing who I am. It is the operator of that network itself knowing who I am, and what devices I use. And that... Well, the VPN will still only be active after the local network. My setup was a router device that would expose a Wi-Fi access point, do DHCP and DNS, route it all to the host, and then run a VPN on top of that. This gives the operator of the host network very little info over who you are, short of MAC and hostname (DHCP sends this out I believe). Your own VPN can give you confidence over your network properties, commercial VPN meanwhile delegates that to people like me, those who actually run the VPN. Now, I do not do this commercially, don't even bother asking. This is just for myself, to string networks together. Peer-to-peer connectivity is enabled, most commercial VPN's don't do that. All they care about is that glorified tunnel, but that's not the point to me. It wasn't even the point of VPN's, full stop. Businesses were supposed to use it to string offices' networks together.

I’ve also noticed that recently, VPN sponsorships are touting their ability to get onto Canadian Netflix from the US and focusing less on the security features because the British Netflix access is the only useful thing they do anymore and the security features are kinda BS at this point.
