This whole video is great, unsurprisingly, but the last five minutes or so are so incredibly important. The Black Panther Party were clearly on to something. The fact that the state mobilized so heavily to stop them is evidence of that. The Panthers showed that if we work together as a class, we can make some very powerful people very scared.

When I was learning about socialism I always (and annoyingly still do) had issues with depictions of POC I was going through that annoying white kid phase of arguing about how racism wasn't around anymore. Learning about the black panthers has really helped with that.

Absolutely. As an Indigenous anarchist, I have learned so much by listening to Fred Hampton's speeches, by following the work of Bobby Seale and Huey Newton, and by reading works by Angela Davis. I don't agree with them on everything, they are MLs after all, but I can't deny that they did a lot of good for their communities, and for that reason Black Marxist-Leninism is something I am more than willing to support.

We have an obligation now, in the face of the failed Amazon union vote, in the face of the impotence of democratic socialism in people like Sanders we have to show people why the panthers were such a militant and revolutionary force. We must all be Fred Hampton. He said "if you aren't a revolutionary don't even think about him". I think about him every day.

Fascinating, I can't help but look at O'Neil's interview and see a broken person whose only way to live with himself was to live in denial. Classic psych self-preservation. I wouldn't be surprised if his selective memory genuinely made him believe he didn't do the things he did. Not shocking that the night the documentary aired and upended his denial/lone coping mechanism, was the same night he killed himself. Talk about a truly tragic piece of history.

I do really wonder what the rest of the 20th century would’ve been like if Fred Hampton hadn’t been assassinated. No revolution is one man, but he had a charisma and talent for building solidarity that’s hard to find and I’m not entirely sure anyone else has had since. To be clear, I’m not being defeatist, I’m just mourning the death of a man who did so much

It's double ironic that Shaka King partially credited this film being made to WB having a woman of color among its executives in an interview. Still, this movie is much better than I could ever hoped for even though it is a lightning in a bottle situation that has nothing to do with capitalist Hollywood having a change of heart.

Great video. One thing that struck me after watching it was the doomerism that came over me. Fred Hampton was 21, He was a fucking kid, I've outlived him now by a year and will probably never accomplish as much as he did. I wish instead of focusing on the tragedy of his murder, they focused much more on what he and the Chicago panthers built, which was honestly beautiful, they were actually building socialism. But because they focus on the tragedy, the movie is much more easily placed into the paradigm of capitalist realism, don't build a party because it will just be destroyed by cointelpro. I could see a lot of liberals watching this and come out thinking reform is the only option, because they other option is death. I don't believe that but I see how a person could leave the movie with those thoughts.

What’s crazy is that there are a lot of people who think like he did but remain “silent”. When I was younger and learning I used to openly say randomly that I’d die young. That I was scared I wouldn’t see 21,22,23 because I was extremely vocal at a young age and would take beatings and punishment with joy. Right is right. Eventually I just let it go, and so I don’t affiliate with any sort of organization nor do I go to protest or anything like that. I don’t even vote anymore. I saw the writing as a kid. My mom and I went to see this movie together and from it she understood my position of freedom better, but also said she thinks I could have been a great leader if I had been born at that time. However she’s happy I wasn’t because I’d be dead. She’s also happy I don’t affiliate with anyone now. It’s a strange place to be in. I’ve met great people who just don’t want to deal with it. We talk to others when they ask us out position or how we feel about things but we don’t go out there armed demanding it. Not anymore

I think I learned a lot from this film. First, the importance of community care, and meeting people's needs in the here and now. So breakfast programmes, medical services, food donation, etc. And secondly, that it's not enough to just tell people to do the readings, or to stop believing the things they've been taught from birth. Collective reading and theory meetings are so much more accessible than telling people to do things on their own. Especially when you're also meeting people's food and shelter needs at the same time.

I didn't mind the scene where Jake Winters executes the cop. Made up, yes, and clearly supposed to be disturbing, but for me it added to the realism. A dying cop *would* likely plead for his life. Acknowledging this and showcasing a Panther's conflicted reaction before (justifiably) executing them is fine by me.

When I heard you say that the movie's depiction of the topic and people were altered to fit the beliefs of the studio, I thought about Zack Snyder and his Watchmen movie. The scenes there are visually accurate, but he manages to find a way to add some changes through editing or cinematography which alters the message of many scenes, and the message he sends is very different from what the source material is trying to say. Some stories can have their meaning changed because of who is telling it. All hail Skittles, the greatest among us.

The movie gives him a chance to land a few more punches before he dies. The comic makes it feel sudden and horrific, and the movie reframed it as one last hurrah. And there's the scene with the Comedian assaulting Silk Spectre, which... is a rather disgusting choice from the director. The film focuses more on the sexiness of the victim's body rather than emphasize how horrifying the situation really is.

This video, this movie, and rehashing of the bpp’s history was just so well done and incredibly important to see. I wish I could contribute something of more substance other than just adding engagement, but yeah, that “I am Fred Hampton”clip gave me chills. I’ve been aware of historic revisions for years, such as the white washing of MLK and declawing of famous radicals, but I haven’t really grasped just how woefully lacking my knowledge was. It’s one thing to know that children are being fed propaganda, but it’s another to see how much of history is outright omitted. I never even heard the names Huey P Newton or Fred Hampton in school, and embarrassingly enough, I didn’t even know who they were or what they did until recently. While I knew OF Marx, Lenin, Mao, all of them mentioned at least in some capacity, however minuscule, I never knew the names of any black panthers. I guess it makes sense though, since “a prerequisite to seeking any social change is the naming of it”

Films like this are doing so much more to educate people on the history of black revolutionary movements than national education systems are. I live in the UK and I also never once heard names like Newton, Hampton, Malcolm X, etc. spoken in school (though we were of course taught all about the great peace-loving MLK Jr who, through the power of politely walking down the street with signs, ended racism). I found out about those people from Spike Lee's IMDb page; I went to see BlacKkKlansman with my dad when I was about 15 and really enjoyed it, looked up Lee's filmography, and saw a movie titled Malcolm X. I later watched it, and from there I've self-educated on the history of black revolutionaries. I didn't even know the UK had it's own civil rights bus boycott until it came up in my university course last year! The fact that this stuff isn't taught is outrageous, and it's why movies like this are so important, they're an easily accessible gateway to learning extremely important history.

I think the movie did an impressively good job portraying the Panthers, considering the context. It doesn't emphasize the communist politics perhaps as much as it should, and O'Neal's story is too much of a focus, but make no mistake about the overall narrative: The BPP are doing good for the community, and the FBI is unjustly sabotaging them. You really don't see many large movies (the damn thing had a ~30 million dollar budget) that are sympathetic to radical leftists, and villainies the American government.

I was legit shocked by this movie since I had the same initial fears as you. Even more so because two years prior, here in Brazil, we had a movie ("Marighella", 2019) made about one of our important revolutionaries, Carlos Marighella. Was it bad? No BUT it really diminished the communist part of the equation because it was made by a center-left director. The overall message was kinda "the dictatorship* is bad! We need to restore (liberal) Democracy!" you know? On the other hand Judas and the Black Messiah did NOT shy away from Hemptons communism imo, choosing excellent excerpts of his speeches. Great movie (eventhough it still has some shortcomings). *the events of the movie occurred and are set in the brazilian military dictatorship period

Excellent video. I think what this movie does best is give enough truth with enough sympathy to the Panthers that it makes you want to research what the real story was. Being born in 70 I grew up being told that Fred Hampton, the Panthers and Malcom X were racist and wanted to start a race war. I saw Muhammad Ali as an arrogant, hate filled black man that shouldn't be respected. Communism is evil and John Wayne was a hero. As I grew older I obviously found that none of that was true. I was told on the street the other day that Communism doesn't work. My reply was "Yeah. It doesn't work so well they assassinated Fred Hampton and Malcom X". He had nothing more to say.

Probably would've said it leans too heavily to one side. And have been turned off by how hopeless it seemed. I think the speeches by Hampton in the movie (if people paid attention to them) were the most positive representative I have seen of the left I can remember!

Great video!! The movie was cool but pretty much what I expected. I did like the slick look of the film by Sean Bobbitt who does most of Steve McQueens stuff. The soundtrack and performances are cool. I'm glad the movie exists and was relatively honest because more people will know Fred Hamptons story and investigate

I'm not sure where you land politically exactly, but I've really enjoyed your videos and analyses, and they don't seem to hedge on topics too often (favoring some idealized middle ground or finger wagging at some idea gone too far).

To me, my thoughts..." i was a child of 6 years old" when fred Hampton was assassinated!!! We've made progress as a people , with wealth to some but, a strong leader of our race hasn't happened in so long? Is there eva gonna be another??? I'm just saying???

I love black panthers movement. For me it's one of the best movement for equality that have ever existed. (But i recognize i don't know much about liberation and equality movements in history, excepted ones like the communards in france or the anarchist movement in the 20/30's in Spain.)
