Thomas Sowell for reasons I do not understand is ignoring an important fact about slavery in the United States. Chattel slavery in the United States was based on race. Africans and Europeans originally came to America as indentured servants. As indentured servants both were allowed to obtain freedom after fulfilling their duties and obligations. However laws were created to prevent people of African descent to obtain freedom and were made slaves of themselves and their children forever. White people on the other hand who were indentured servants were able to obtain freedom and buy land. Why Thomas Sowell tries to whitewash the evils of the racial pernicious system that has existed in this country is beyond reason?

@@royguster5576 "Why Thomas Sowell tries to whitewash the evils of the racial pernicious system that has existed in this country is beyond reason?" I always say... we did not have the internet back then. So a lot of what you hear about slavery is taken from 2nd or third hand accounts. For me personally, I don't worry about it much. If you pull back the curtain on every single countries history, you will probably see a lot of things that were totally unfair to the margins of its population. I look back at the history of the Aztecs in Mexico and think, thank god I wasn't born way back then.

But these ignorant people don't want to hear FACTS, this goes against the popular narrative...SMH. Great video.

And you're absolutely right about The Welfare State.

Sounds reasonable but the technology was there. Slavic slaves sold in Baghdad - thousands of kilometres away from where they got caught. It's not recent. The race of slaves was quite important as well, in Baghdad they loved "fair skinned blonde slaves".

Of course slavery is bad. But.......... EVERY country, kingdom, groups of people... resorted to slavery. Some treated slaves 'well', some treated them like dirt. Slavery in America was for a far shorter duration that most of other countries and yes it was black slaves, but in the history of slavery.. black as the color of slavery was not the rule.
@Avianthro
@Avianthro Месяц назад
No, we cannot say that slavery was solely causative of the current relatively lower socio-economic status of blacks in the USA, but it was certainly a major factor, even a critically determinative factor. like the saltpeter in gunpowder...no explosive reaction without it. We also cannot blame everything on the in-hindsight foolish, though well-meaning, "welfare state" policies. Social behavioral phenomena are complex...no simple explanations or quick-n-simple solutions, but nevertheless, we should keep trying, and referring to Thomas Sowell for some of our guidance is a very good idea indeed.

Not sure who this man is but he makes a poor argument. Simply mentioning that many cultures practiced slavery doesn't contribute anything worthwhile to the conversation about the specific and unique institution of American chattel slavery. He's just avoiding the topic altogether.
@thomassowellreacts
@thomassowellreacts Месяц назад
Ironic that you also choose to avoid the bigger picture of slavery. How do you want to understand the specific case of American chattel slavery when you refuse to study the big picture? There's a principle: If you don't understand the bigpicture be more than certain you have no clue about the specifics, even though you may think (or have been made to believe) you do.
@keyes858
@keyes858 Месяц назад
@@thomassowellreacts My problem is that Mr. Sowell doesn’t actually say anything of substance about the ‘big picture’. He just alludes to the existence of the big picture as if that were an argument on its own.

@@keyes858he is basically saying there is nothing unique about the enslavement of Africans in the US from 1700-1865. It's also eye opening that Africans themselves practiced it- and they enslaved more whites from Europe than Europeans/Americans enslaved Africans. Your opinion might be that this is uninteresting but imagine you are in the minority.
@keyes858
@keyes858 Месяц назад
@@jandoernte3312 Whether it’s “unique” is completely irrelevant. It happened in America so America should have the right to talk about it. It’s sad that so-called “intellectuals” like Mr Sowell only seek to shut down the conversation with these tired platitudes.
