This was such fun, Mary Pat, thank you. A tidbit of history: my great, great grandad was Hiram Ingalls, little brother of Charles. His daughter, Mary Ellen Rose Ingalls, was my grandpa's mom. My grandpa, Leonard Kezer, got his first fiddle from cousin Bill Ingalls. We grew up listening to my grandpa playing fiddle and my grandma on piano. The memory of these tunes was the sole reason I bought my first fiddle years ago. :)

Laurie Broome, you might be related to my friend Bob Wilson. His family claims to be related to Charles Ingalls and has a family tree. His copy of the family tree has been mangled through the years and I have to find it again but it would be interesting to find out for him if you are truly related.....

This was a very nicely-done, research-based and insightful examination of Charles Ingalls fiddling. Great information and great tunes!

When the nights were too hot to sleep, my aunt's, uncles, grandfather and grandmother would often sing for a while! Nearly every time, my grandfather would say to my grandmother, "Mattie, sing 'Strap your bastard on your back and paddle your own canoe'". She never did so I never heard the song?

Thank you very much for this video. I was interested in finding the real music. I only recently read any of the Laura Ingall's books. In my case it was The Long Winter. It is a fiction book so I did not expect it to be exact. With it being a children's book I expected alot to be left out. If you read The Long Winter then you know of the depravation all the families went through.

Thank you for putting so much work into this. This was helpful as I’m leading a “campfire talk” at our campground discussing music of the American prairie in the 1800s. Im glad I found this video!

About your comparison of the books with the TV show--I cannot thank you enough! There is little similarity between the two. I love the books so much I can't bring myself to watch the show because it is a travesty. I believe Laura would never have allowed this show to be made in her lifetime. She turned down a TV idea based on her books because the scriptwriters wanted to change too many things. So I don't watch it out of my honor for her. (From something I read recently, she herself did not own a television.)

I'd have to agree. I can appreciate why people like the show, but has someone who has lived in all the places that Pa lived, it's really hard for me to see the liberties taken in the scripts.

Thank you for making your comment. I never watched the show and recently became interested due to it being 50 year anniversary. I am amazed at the liberties taken with the Ingall's lives by the writers, especially Michael Landon who inserted his own childhood experience. More so with the Actors profiting off the Ingall's lives with their books and merchandise. I am a little uncomfortable with the whole thing but again, I am definitely a far away observer.
