Whether it's someone as obvious as Blackbeard or someone random, many of the characters have historical roots that make One Piece that much more fun. So come and join us in learning the story behind the series and some of the real pirates who populate One Piece!

Another inspiration for Gol D. Roger was Henry Avery, who proclaimed himself king of the pirates after leading a pirate coalition that raided an Indian pilgrim ship on route to Mecca. There's also Bartholomew Kuma who was named after Bartholomew Roberts and X-Drake who was based on Francis Drake. Also Whitebeard's first name Newgate is after a prison in old London where Captain Kidd spent his last days before his execution.

Not a pirate, but Water 7 is based off of water island in the Virgin Islands. Like water 7 it was a popular place to fix or get new ships.

In my childhood i heard a lot about Olivier Levasseur a.k.a "La Buse" and his famous treasure, because he was executed on Reunion island, my home. Just found out that he was an inspiration for Roger, awesome !

I think he possibly missed a really obvious one, Edward Hornigold which he mention, who probably had connections to Edward Newgate or ,white beard, since he was the previous captain to teach, or Blackbeard

the truth is most characters are a mixture of real pirates, even whitebeard represents Blackbeard in the way his crew looked up to him, the way he died 267 sword wounds, 152 gun wounds - real life 5 gun wounds, 20 sword wounds. The way Blackbeard didn't kill any of his prisoners whereas one-piece Blackbeard would. The are hundreds of possible obvious connections.

I only knew one in OP Magellan inspired from the real life dude named Magellan that tried to conquer the Philippines but died to the Philippine leader at the time named Lapu-Lapu but he then died(Lapu-Lapu) from one of his own men that rebelled and joined Magellan’s side by a poison arrow to the knee. Idk why he isn’t in this list or he forgot Magellan was inspired by a real dude

Funny story, I created a One piece character of my own; Jameson D. Mason. I know it sounds just like the Hollywood actor James Mason, that's where I got the idea from. But a few months ago I discovered there was a pirate captain called Samuel Mason from the American revolution. Funny ya.

I also have a fan- made One Piece character: Tyburn D. Zapp. He is based on Tyber Zann, a crime lord from Star Wars: Empire at War: Forces of Corruption. While the game is no longer canon, I still like this antihero and I think he would make a great pirate in One Piece. Funny enough, his name is also a reference to the gallows in which Captain Kidd was hung.

eustace the monk could also be a reference to urouge. Maynard who killed blackbeard could be a reference to the vice admirale maynard. and i believe ive read of x-drake being also referred to a pirate.

Urouge is more inspired by 'Mad Monk' Rasputin of Russia, he was known to be a sexual deviant, they both share the epithet 'Mad Monk' too

Light Of Heaven which I hate considering how he went down like a badass in history. Not to mention they down right disrespect the man by making him act like a modern day weaboo. The real Edward Thatch Teacher aka Black Beard would be at least a 4 star golden rank. And his queens Anne revenge would be just as powerful as gender bent Francis Drake's Golden Hunt. Hell it would be more powerful with him matching exactly how he was perceived as the devil incarnate as a pirate. But that's just me.
