The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings - If you’ve read the British author J.R.R. Tolkien’s books before, or seen the movies, you’ll be familiar with the fantasy worlds he created. But where did the inspiration for these creations come from? To this day, this question is still widely debated. British author and Tolkien expert John Garth has embarked on a journey to find out.

Sorry, way too much emphasis on Oxfordshire, the rural Shire was very much the Warwickshire of his youth and the desolation of Mordor must have been influenced by his experiences on the Western Front.

Honestly, besides the parallels between the English countryside and the shire, I think a lot of these are a bit of a stretch

Actually the misty mountains are inspired by the Drakensberg, not Switzerland and he even mentions it in his writings about the books

Tolkien made many journeys to Jutland, the old vikingland, that ruled Denmark from 500-1200 long before Copenhagen. He used the names of the cities and the folklore storiers that people in Jutland told him. Visit Aarhus, the viking capital.

Examples from Jutland: Aarhus - Aros. A famous river of Middle Earth. Isgård - Isengard. An old viking manor. "Is" being an old word for fire / iron. Eskerod - Esgaroth. The lake town of the Hobbit. Hjelms Dyb - Helms Deep. The story of Mithril originates from an old danish myth from Samsø, describing an impiercable breastplate light as silk. On Samsø one can also find the ancient myth of a restless king who dwells in the hills with his warriors until they are redeemed from their curse. The inspiration behind Tolkiens King of the Dead.

The idea of hobbits and there homes came from when he found the ancient roman iron mines of the Forest of Dean . The mines were round tunnels carved in to a hill side . And the locals believed that small people aka hobbits lived in the hill . A lot of his ideas came from folklore , and the people (foresters) of the Forest of Dean believed in some crazy stuff back then , in fact they still do 😂

This is more the inspiration of lead designers John Howe and Alan Lee than Tolkien himself.

Not a single mention of the West Midlands. Hilarious. Let;'s ignore the words of the man himself shall we.

You don't even mention Sauron's temple in Numenor when the Radcliffe Camera is literally in the frame? a pity. the opportunity might as well be gift wrapped. PS : oh wait, and the Sarehole mill?

Let me guess, you are one of those people who thinks just cos the movies were filmed in NZ it must mean Tolkien was inspired by it 60 years earlier, like he somehow had a time machine.
