Luna says in the nightmare night episode "it is tradition to use the royal 'we' when speaking to subjects" so i highly doubt she was talking about herself and nightmare moon

Nightmare Moon had saved up her power to escape from the moon. She was probably still to weak to defeat the ponies, so she tried to stop them from finding the elements while she recovered and got stronger.

Interesting theory. I personally lean toward the idea that Nightmare Moon wasn't toying with the Mane 6, she was testing them. She was wary of the Elements (as they'd defeated her a thousand years before), so she was judging if the ponies seeking them out were actually a threat. If she could just scare them off or sow doubt along the way while she found the Elements for herself, all the better, but if they got past her tests she would know they were potential bearers for the Elements and a threat to her rule.

Dont forget. This is the original reason Twilight moved to Ponyville. She wasn't even going to stay past the celebration until all was said and done. Celestia probably knew there was something about Twilight that would bring the old Luna out, and she flat out admits to knowing about the other 5, and that Twilight would hit it off with them.

while yes, Luna uses the royal, singular "we", one thing is that during the whole show, Luna and nightmare moon are refered to as two totally different ponies, sure this could just be a "you're not that evil person anymore!" it can also be simply because they ARE different

I have a fan theory worth looking at: A heartwarming Tale Is the catalyst for Celestia, trying to find an apprentice that would bring back the elements of harmony. Just from the sheer fact that Daring doo is believed to be a fictional character in Equestria but is actually real. Adds the possibility that a heartwarming tale could have also been a true story. Now, if it was true, then, could it be possible possible that princess Luna was responsible for the events that change snowfall frost? I say this because it has been shown that Luna could do the past present in future thing previously with Sweetie Bell. So my fan theory is basically that Celestia read the book and realized that it was a sign that Luna wasn’t entirely nightmare moon. And that there was a possibility that the elements of Harmony could be used to save her. In order to do that, she would need an apprentice that could represent the element of magic, and then that apprentice needed to genuinely five friends. But the key is they had to organically become friends. It wouldn’t work if her apprentice knew about the plan.

It's nice to see you back and with such an interesting theory. There's also a theory which sais that only those representing traits of the elements of harmony could find them and that's why Nightmare Moon didn't go after them immediately. She might have even tested the main 6 for those traits so the elements would reveal themselves and she would be able to destroy them.

This is a really good theory. i just thought nothing of it, but on etheory is that celestia was the one to release Night Mare Moon at the risk of sending herself to the sun because when we saw celestia at the end, it looked like she was coming out of the sun Im so glad i found your channel because your theories are sooooo goooodddd

What's intresting about this show is that, although it's mostly made for Girls, it's done so well and the characters are so adorable and relatable, that even Boys like it. Like Mr Enter does.

Wouldn't be surprised if Nightmare Moon sacrificed herself to preserves Luna's sanity the same way GlitchTrap? Did in Borderlands the Pre-Sequel DLC for CL4P-TP

I think the "toying" with them was influenced by Luna as well to test if they could weild the elements.

I personally think her anger was much stronger at the start of 1,000 years before being banished, hence why the alternative universe version of her would do whatever it took while after banishment she wouldn't

The Elements seem to do what is necessary at the time. Trapping Nightmare Moon on the Moon for a Thousand years was needed to weaken her so a second shot would change her back to Luna. Bt the way Nightmare Moon is still Best Alicorn 😁😎

I think your right Nightmare retained Luna's logic and virtues deep down, she knew if the sun could never come up everything would die making her want to be defeated so she didn't work to hard to defeat them.

I think when nightmare moon was trapped in the moon I think she lost some of her powers wich she was trying to get more time to get her full power back

I kind of see Luna/Nightmare Moon a bit the same way i see Anakin/Darth Vader. Sure still the same guy. But while being Darth Vader, his old self was there somewhere doubting everything he did and thus the conflict that Luke used to bring Anakin back.

I’m mostly saying this as a joke, but “able to defeat Celesta” isn’t really a high bar anymore…as far as I’m aware, that pony has lost LITERALLY every duel we’ve seen her in on screen

my theory is just luna's conscience had gained strength while on the moon, and she was able to dampen some of nightmare moon's abilities, but not enough to fully overcome her.

Aside from the use of the royal "we" being a blip in the theory, I think its got a good weight. Especially if you consider the Comic arc Nightmare Rarity (issues 5-8 of the IDW comic). I know the comics aren't considered canon but after the cutie remark we could consider it an alternate timeline considering all of the various timelines Twilight visits. In it Luna was stalked by a nightmare creature that played on Luna's fear and insecurity and that's what caused her to turn into Nightmare Moon, In the comic it did the same thing to Rarity, giving all of the mane 6 nightmares for a week until one of them broke enough to be taken over. If the same nightmare smoke creature was the real cause of the creation of nightmare moon in the series then Luna herself could be the one fighting back (given she'd had 1000 years for emotions to settle and to realise and regret her decisions) a little piece of the real her fighting back against the turmoil in her own mind created by the shadow. Would also help explain her creation of the Tantabus. A nightmare creating shadow that she created to give herself nightmares every night, to remind herself of what happened before and what she became, so she could be stronger in future.

Heres my fan theory. Celestia and discord totally faked every defeat just to train twilight to rule one day. I don't beleive the two thousand year old alicorn that's protected all of equestria for all those years was just defeted by chrysalis in one hit. I mean, we've seen that both celestia and discord have been known to let twilight do everything. When they were talking about about celestias retirement rainbow says "she never does anything" even though she has for thousands of years. Yes she isn't connected to the elements but she's still all powerful. I think discord planned to get his magic taken by cozy glow cuz he knew she couldn't control it and he couldn't pull the same "Oh no I was totally just defeated by sombra" thing he did literally the last fight he was in just so twilight wouldn't run to him for help.

hay um fun fact did you'll notice midnight sparkle was hinted tords multiple times in the pony world. 1,was when twilight is talking to her water reflection as if she's 2 different characters. 2,was when the element of magic twilights element released dark blue magic which turned sunset evil and gave her mind controling magic. 3,was back when sombra first appeared were twilight got a fear nightmare thing about celestia pushing her away and behind twilight on a poster or banner showed sombra takeing the crystal heart with twilight falling to the dark crystals below were a blue sparkle shines above them I always thought the main 6 beating nightmare moon in season one was couse Luna no longer wanted to be nightmare moon, when Luna turned into nightmare moon the first time she wanted to defeat her sister and take over. but here nightmare moon simply tested the main 6 which helped twilight connect to them and the elements as unlike with her vs Celestia nightmare moon didn't try fighting back as Luna cried in sorrow after reuniting with her sister, it's like midnight sparkle in eg twilight snapped out of midnights control after seeing Spike and later midnight tried fully controlling twilight but couldn't do to twilight rejecting her. and kinda like daybreaker and Celestia now that I think about it, daybreaker got into Celestias head while confronting her and this had her fight nightmare moon with no restrictions but after Celestia got Luna, Luna helped celestia get the strength to fight against daybreaker and make sure in her own words " and you well never exist again" implying the daybreaker of the nightmare was the real daybreaker even more so do to daybreaker talking to Celestia, when the only ones who could interact with Luna in the dream world are the ponys she's trying to help

Honestly, I think it was a mix of Luna trying to intervene and that Nightmare Moon already used a lot of power so she was probably very weak. Luna's emotions kinda effect Nightmare moon. In the past Luna was jealous and felt extremely alone so she was willing to let Nightmare moon do it for her cause she was very angry. Her anger is what gives Nightmare moon fuel and power to take over Luna. But fast forward to when Nightmare moon had enough power to escape and thats probably when Luna was starting to feel remorse and didn't want to be Nightmare moon anymore. So since she was feeling reluctant about the idea(the idea that Nightmare had) it probably affected Nightmare moon's (aka, her darkside) power and it would probably affect her even more so since Nightmare did use a lot of power to escape the moon. So being weak from her using a lot of magic and Luna's emotions that made Nightmare very weak, essentially meaning that her dark power was weakening since Nightmare moon is tied to Luna's emotions it seems.

Any ideas on how that fits with "and the stars will help her (nmm) escape?" I love how we're probably overthinking plotholes into coherent, cathartic storylines a decade later for smol colorful hors show

It always weirded me out that she says “us”, and the idea that she and Nightmare Moon are two separate souls and Nightmare Moon is the spirit that corrupted her could actually be true. Please give us a theory on Allura or the origin of the Sirens!

With some theories, they at least have more basis with the power of a more developed story and the contents within the episode. The problem with this theory is that this is about the pilot, when the real world explanation is probably that Nightmare Moon was rewritten in Season 4 and 5 to be a more competent villain, in contrast with her being older self. And if you want to go away from real world explanations, bringing in Nameless highlights your ignorance to a conflicting piece of evidence: the Nightmare Rarity saga. Yes, there are parts of it that break the main canon, most notably how Luna changed into her proper form and nobody recognizing her as Luna in Luna Eclipsed. But the thing to consider is how the Nightmare Forces influence those they are holding onto. Nightmare Rarity is controlled by the very same consciousness that was Nightmare Moon, and while it does help your theory of the vessel having some ability to shine through the Nightmare entity, for the most part, it's out of their control. Not to mention, Nightmare Rarity was more competent with tricking the heroes, and even when they broke free from her nightmares, they were captured anyway. The difference is, they lost because they didn't realize that the Magic of Friendship didn't need the Elements to be usable and powerful. Nightmare Rarity also toyed with the heroes, but she did more by locking the Mane Six up, rather than just trying to sway them to run away. And let's be real. The only reason neither version of the Nightmare didn't kill anyone is because of the difficulties with depicting major character death on screen, that isn't a family friendly death.

Maybe all 3 theories are right. Nightmare moon AND Luna are both complex and don't have as much screentime as other villains like the flim flam Brothers or discord. Even cozy glow, and her team of villains had more screen time. So i think it COULD be all of them combind.

Finally a video after forever but I understand after the trainwreck that was g5 and seems the last gen for awhile which really did little for the lore and did gen 4 no justice RIPSpike g5 killed you off I don't believe to wish that really you in g5 like he has no sadness or care about the g4 ponies or the fact he's just woken up and their all dead he's just so non chelant about it it's sickening I litterly feel like boycotting the people who thought up the last season of mlp we know of

Here is my own theory. Nightmare Moon came back to Equestria, and beat Celestia in magic duel. After that she took her place in Ponyville to scare everypony, and rule over them. Ponyville is only her first step, and not even challenge. But she tried intimidate, and scare them, she release monsters, and even bribe them. But nothing worked. Nightmare Moon realised that if she can't handle even small village then she can't rule over Equestria Alone. To be honest I don't blieve in dark magic taking control over someone. Luna was in controle of this situation, and she wants to rule over Equestria like Grogar the first emperor

Wind striker if the sonicrainboom caused the main 6 to get they cutie mark and later cause them to meet, then cudent other ponies or critrus had something happend to them and help cause the main 6 to meet?

i always thought that nightmare moon was an entity that lived inside luna and began slowly corrupting her becoming her alter ego kinda like a jakle and hyde situation

Nightmare moon was differently in every time space but I guess that there are only two timelins and one of them is owes and in the others Nightmare moon secseeded first Celestia traped her into moon and after she used the elements of harmony agenst princess Celestia and now she is rolling in that timeline

I guess 1000 years on the mon can make someone go peculiar, definitely wane her social skills. Luna's inability to make peace with her Nightmare Moon persona is very like the Evil Queen Regina from "Once Upon a Time" or Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader from "Star Wars". I wonder if it is possible to give Nightmare Moon what she wants and not sacrifice Equestria at the same time. Nightmare Moon needs to learn that eternal night would mean no sunlight, no plant growth, no fruits for the batponies and eventually no oxygen to breath from photosynthesis.

It certainly sounds plausible. And, it would definitely explain the Nightmare Timeline Nightmare Moon being the way she was. Even if Luna noticed Twilight during the confrontation at Nightmare's castle, she'd have figured out quickly Twilight wouldn't be able to help her. She might've been the reason Twilight fooled Nightmare so easily, though. How else could Twilight have so easily gotten the drop on Nightmare to go back in time, leaving Nightmare fuming that such a unique magic was now lost to her?

This is an interesting theory, and may be true, but another common suggestion is that Celestia was fighting back, and Nightmare Moon had to keep a portion of her power working towards keeping her wherever she'd been trapped, possibly the sun.
