One of my friends have informed me that I completely forgot about the fact that the production studio for Carmen Sandiego basically put the animators under crunch and never paid them. I even made a big fuss about it back in the day, but for some reason I completely forgot here. So yeah; don't watch Carmen Sandiego. Crunch is awful and shouldn't be rewarded. Same goes for Last of Us 2. Guys got hospitalised from the development of that.
These are the annoying things that i noticed between megatron and prime: -Megatron talks like he has severe sore throat -Optimus instead of being a: Fun, charismatic, caring and smart leader, instead they made him an: idiotic, easily irritated and bipolar leader -Optimus' VA tries to talk like he's peter cullen but it is so irritating to listen to -Everytime megatron talks he takes so long that i graduated college for him to finish a sentence
Optimuses voice is so dam unbearable it’s like the exact voice you’d expect in a English dub of sorts where the VA is trying to make a troubled character sound like a hard ass I have no idea who’s supervising megs VA because in cyberverse he was also pretty shit too
The criticism of Optimus Prime is really spot on. I grew up with 1986 Transformers movies, and I remember seeing the first live action movie in the 2000's with my dad (A military man) Optimus always felt like... that battle hardened General who knew what was at stake, and always rushed in to save the day in those incarnations. He was strong, fearless, determined, wise in his old age type of vibe. In War for Cybertron, I got the vibes that he was immature, uncertain, confused, overly dramatic, careless (willing to sacrifice anything to obtain nothing) and overall not that great of a warrior. Its extremely confusing to have the leader of the bad guys portrayed as being stoic, strong, cunning and fearsome while the leader of good guys is a joke... a sad... sad... 3 season... joke...
If this Optimus had been characterized as Gigantion Arc Cybertron Optimus (who had doubts in his ability to command but didn’t lack confidence in his men, and pushed through his insecurities to grow as a commander while maintaining a sense of wit) then he would have been perfect. What I’m saying is that Garry Chalk should have been this Prime.
Yes, I mean there are plenty of voice actors, TV announcers, radio personnel… If they found someone out there with a voice to channel Optimus Prime’s ancient/wise/powerful persona, or even smart/powerful persona, if you want new fans, I think it would work out OK. Then find a female counterpart of this for a fitting Elita-1…
You think it's time we let G1 rest for maybe two or three years while letting a new Transformers product have a different aesthetic? You know, many have been crying out for a Transformers Animated revival.
I would vouch for either that or a Transformers Prime reboot. It was a good example of production quality and creativity, with the G1 references here and there without getting in the way of plaguing the show
Thank you for doing this analysis! Took the words right out of my mouth. It's a shame Hasbro doesn't take advantage of the universe that HMS built with the Cybertron games. WFC got me into the franchise and to see it's name spoiled with this show makes me really sad. :( Btw, would love to see an analysis on the games! They deserve more love!
@@custommediacreations Yes, I’ll second that, and I’m not even the biggest video game fan! I wish I had a console, because Devastation also looked amazing.
It's kinda weird that they cancelled Cyberverse for this. Siege feels more like a side thing. It felt kinda lazy and rushed cuz it was a toyline first and show second. It prob had way less room for creativity, since it had to work around the toys in the line.
Remember when transformer shows had originality? Where the plot made sense even without prior knowledge of the series, and back when characters didn't the be just like their g1 counterparts, back when designs were unique and not just g1 for the 8th time in a row? Where did all that creativity go, transformers seems to have none left
@@Solarius1983 Exactly! Transformers Prime is underrated in many ways, one being how they strayed from only being aimed at G1 fans ( the reason why gee wunners hate on it)
@@_V.Va_ Oh really? The fact is when you go on any TFP videos theres always a huge amount of dislikes, more than there are in G1 or related videos. People say TFP is overrated purely from seeing how many people appreciate it for what it is, without seeing it getting pretty much the most hate out of any other popular transformers show
I binged watched this Transformers Netflix Cartoon twice , and I still think it’s good. My only complaint has to be the lack of emotion when it comes to the voice acting.
We need more representation of character incarcerations that aren’t from G1. They released updated versions of Transformers Cybertron Optimus Prime and Cybertron Defense Hot Shot in the Siege toyline, yet they go purely G1 with the show.
I’m also tired of every transformer movie or show just purely using designs from G1. Sure they are good (when updated, since I dislike the old brick bodies), but they are so overused.
Wait, my big takeaway from this video was MOONRACER IS IN THE SHOW? I legitimately thought that was chromia and that the writers forgot they killed her off in the sea of rust
Yeah, I definitely agree with you about bringing new fans, I'm basically trying to find something to make my friends interested in the franchise for a while, but since everything nowadays is just a big fanservice made to appeal previous generations it's really impossible without having to give a history lesson to them. Also, Defence of Darkness hum? Nice choice.
I appreciate your criticism. I do like the art style, and I like it, although vague on certain deaths. I will bench watch it again and give my assessment whether I like it or not. It’s always fun to go back and watch again for me. It has some cool stuff, and I am interested of the intertwined timelines.
Also, yeah I thought it was off with the Optimus voice, specially in episode 2 when Megatron and him had visions, battled and felt like a Batman vs Joker
To add onto the “there lies the issue” segment, I freaking groaned when the show was advertised for the “fans of the G1 cartoon.” Exactly like how everything in the last decade was and is advertised The franchise is 36 years old. Those who were 5-10 in 1984 are 41-46 years old right now. They likely introduced Transformers to their own kids who grew up with their own G1 with UT, Animated, or Prime. And all that they get are their dad’s transformers, but edgy now. Nothing feels like it’s for them or acknowledging them. Sure they have the SS, but even that’s gonna get filled with G1 next year with the 1986 movie subline It’s the same problem with Pokemon. Constantly advertising to the kids in the 90s and completely ignoring kids of the 2000s and 2010s who came in later and enjoy the franchise but their favorite pokemon don’t get any love in the recent games
@@DrLockdown this is just sooooo ironic. I know there are some 1980s fan hating Cyberverse because its "dumb and childish" but honestly its so much more enjoyable and well writen than this wfc mess
You're definitely not alone in this. As someone who actually grew up watching the G1 series, Animated, Prime, and even the Cybertron trilogy, nothing regarding this franchise has disappointed me as much as this series. It somehow craps all over previous incarnations while failing in execution of its own new ideas. I found myself skipping through the series because it physically hurt for me to sit through some of the dialogue/voicework. I'd watch Rescue Bots or even Energon over this any day.
So... They really hired a guy who only did an Optimus impression for the sake of memes. It was so terrible that they immediately brought Peter back. Then they did it a SECOND time!?
24:09 **Playing Forged to Fight despite the fact they really didn't have any plans to expand their character roster from scratch and thus no completely new content for months, but still playing because low risk of getting hooked in highly competitive weekly additions from Angry Birds and Earth Wars.**
I think that second Peter Cullen point was more connected to bumblebee situation. They fired him, casted another dude, but it didn't work so they casted Cullen again. You could feel like shit after such treatment
That's not really how it went down. Those were temp voices. They needed to do the animation first, and they got Peter to come in later It was also separate from the whole Netflix debacle
I don’t think it’s even about a new audience, but it’s basic writing to explain why someone should care about the conflict. Like sure, they’re fighting for freedom, but they never explain why you should actually care about these characters or their planet. Where are the scenes showing the likability of characters, where are the scenes showing the consequences of the war, WHY these characters are doing what they’re doing (showing dead bodies of nameless repaints never shown before and never seen again DOESNT COUNT).
Except they didn't bother to write any of this stuff because 'fans already know it, so who cares'. In that instance, I do think it's about the audience.
DrLockdown I suppose in that way it’s a bit of a “chicken or the egg” predicament. Either they didn’t care about reaching a new audience so didn’t bother showing why viewers should care, or they were to lazy or unmotivated to bother showing why viewers should care, so it doesn’t reach a new audience as a result.
Yeah. I just want media that builds brings in new fans. When I see what other reboots are able to do, I feel even more disappointed with Hasbro's recent offerings.
I liked it I’m 17 and I still grew up with the G1 stuff so I love the designs and honestly I’ve wanted to see a full show about the actual war on cybertron
@@fexbd and how long ago did rid 2015 ended? Only 7 years ago. Meanwhile how long did the franchise go without pandering to g1 in massive ways? From 2001 to 2017....let that sink in....bayverse ended in 2017 as well and even you're forgetting earthspark, cyberverse, bumblebee and rotb all blended g1 and non g1 designs together. All which being modern TF titles we gotten in the last ten years. Come back to me when pandering to g1 actually last for more than a decade,
I do agree that Optimus voice needs to change the voice actor is trying too hard to be peter Collin and Jake can’t convey emotion needed for the scene. Also quick side note Moonracer is one of my favorite characters I like that she’s so light hearted and joyful and to see her potential waisted in this series was a series upset, she could have offset all the grim and dark with her personality
I know I’m super late to this but I just recently found your channel so here we go. I agree with almost all of this, so much of what you said perfectly sums up my feelings about this show, although there are a couple of things that I disagree with. The first being Megatron’s character, I found it to be an utter bore. There was nothing shown to make us feel anything for the character, no tragedy, no big moment that showed him reaching his breaking point such as a betrayal or being forced to execute a defeated and unarmed enemy, nothing. I could never actually care about Megatron in this show which kills me because there are two common ways to handle the character, really delve deep into his humanity and the tragic story of the character like IDW Megatron(I cried for like 20 minutes straight when he told Ravage why he became an Autobot, I was bawling my eyes out), or make him a damn psychopath who is so much fun to watch because of how absolutely evil and insane he is like the High Moon Megatron. Yes those are my two favorite incarnations of the character followed closely by BW Megs in third place. But the show tries to do both and yet doesn’t succeed at either of them. The second thing I disagree on is the Peter Cullen situation. What they did with the Bumblebee movie was messed up. They had someone do an impression of Peter’s Optimus, one that didn’t have the inflections and the small yet important detail right, animated the character around that, and then had Peter do an impression of that. I can never rewatch the Cybertron scene from that film without noticing the differences in the voice. And I personally think that we should be open to new voice actors for these characters, but Peter Cullen and Frank Welker want to reprise their roles as Optimus Prime and Megatron, they want to keep doing it, but they’re not able to. I personally can imagine Peter taking offense to being replaced by a Vine star. No offense towards Jake whatshisface because he does have talent, but imagine voicing a character for years, a character that you have an emotional connection to, and when you want to keep going, you’re replaced by some person who was popular on this internet thing. That’s like being replaced by a Tik Tok celebrity, I’d feel insulted if that happened to me. And honestly, if Jake is to take over the role of Optimus Prime he really does need to make it his own like Garry and David. And if we want it to sound like Peter’s the we just need to get someone who can mimic that. Hell I can do it! I don’t mean to brag or sound arrogant but Peter Cullen himself said that my Optimus Prime impression was really good. As someone who wants to become a voice actor I was almost in tears when he said that, it’s always amazing to receive that sort of encouragement and that’s why I stand up for voice actors taking on the role of an already existing and well loved character, because people are really harsh, just look at how people are saying the new VA for Claire in the Resident Evil 2 Remake sucks because she’s not as good as the original. I’ve had people I know say that to me and it’s soul crushing, so I try to stand up for others in most cases. But I’ll also criticize when necessary and Jake needs to make his own voice for Optimus Prime and if he does I’ll have no problem with him taking over just as long as it’s after Peter is done. But I agree on everything else. The voice acting and direction was bad. The tone felt like Batman vs Superman and by that I mean a soul sucking experience that I never want to watch again, whatever happened to entertainment being made to actually entertain? The pacing sucks balls. I genuinely dislike the animation as it’s now been eleven years and we still haven’t topped Transformers Prime’s absolutely stellar animation. Oh and the kibble is stupid and I want to slap whoever made that choice. It may have worked in the UT because they literally showed you the transformation as advertisement for the toys but it still sucked, it sucked then and it sucks now. And the fact that Hasbro won’t stop sucking G1’s dick is infuriating. I love G1 but I also love other things in the franchise like the High Moon games which I’m so glad you acknowledged and even acknowledged the Planet X figures, I just got their Omega Supreme about a week ago and I love it. I’m definitely glad that Beast Wars is making a comeback although that’s probably because Hasbro found a loophole cuz it’s still in the G1 continuity or something idk. But I think what bothered me the most about this show is that it was set on Cybertron and did nothing interesting with that setting at all. When this series was first announced I was so hyped and the main thing I wanted to see was a time before the war and how the war started. But the show never delivered that, in fact no Transformers show has ever delivered that. The only time we ever saw a pre-war Cybertron setting and the start of the war outside of flashbacks was in the comics. And that’s why I think Hasbro/Paramount should go with my ideas for a Transformers film series. It would start with a Megatron film that showed a pre-war Cybertronian civilization and see the downward spiral of Megatron as he tries to tear down the corrupt High Council led by Sentinel Prime as he suffers the lost of his best friend Galavar(the new BW comics wink wink) and as he is kidnapped and forced to fight and kill for entertainment in the illegal gladiatorial pits of Kaon led by Scourge(yes character reinvention but at this point we could use some of that) and this is where he meets Blitzwing and Soundwave as he kills Scourge and takes control of the arena and gains the support of Kaon and other cities in his campaign against the High Council, then after a fallout with him and Orion Pax, he completely goes off the rails and launches a full scale assault on Iacon, where he kills Sentinel and reveals that he never had the Matrix and was a false Prime, thus leading to the rise of the Decepticons. Then an Optimus Prime movie as we see Orion Pax become Optimus due to his mentor Alpha Trion bestowing upon him the Matrix of Leadership, as we then see Optimus Prime rally together a group of Cybertronians to fight against the Decepticons, and eventually reclaim Iacon, and thus the Autobot faction is born. But I added this twist to the character where the Matrix is the core of Primus’ power and so to bear it you must have great mastery of your emotions. And that’s why Prime would constantly be seen as calm and rational as opposed to angry or depressed, because if he didn’t, the destructive power of the Matrix would be catastrophic and kill millions, thus having to keep his emotions in check, bottling it all up which is terrible when you have to make the hard decisions in war which is exactly what would happen and we’d see him lose control at several times throughout the series blah blah blah you get the idea. The it would be a War for Cybertron film that wouldn’t actually be called War for Cybertron. And it would be a lot like the game but it wouldn’t end with them leaving in the Ark, that be the next film. So yeah, this could totally work if anyone working on this franchise actually gave two shits about the fans and the content they put out. It’s so possible to make Transformers content, especially films, that appeal to both new and old fans at the same time. If the MCU can do it then so can Transformers, if only DC got the memo. Sorry for the super long rant there. I’m very passionate about this franchise and really want it to succeed.
No, no it’s not. You watch a baby bumblebee hangout with a human child and somehow defeat two experienced deceptions. The movie is mediocre and nothing more. The best part of it is the small bit on cybertron, where it isn’t focused on bumblebee.
I really liked bumblebee with most of movies the other movies across the franchise being meh other than like 1 which kicked me off from memory (tf 5 was the only one where I felt like I was robbed even tho it wasn’t my tickets). 4 I had on box set and was eh. 3 was eh. 2 I liked but forgot why after rewatching and 1 was well why I like transformers. I liked bumblebees design and the concept a lot. Looking forward to the other movies though I’m curious if they will ever try doing events leading up to the war like a mini series or perhaps a movie.
14:56 but doc, female characters can't have more than one emotion these days. they don't need engaging personalities, they just need to be "strong" and everyone will like them immediately :p
The characters talk as slowly as the Titans move in Titans Return. Siege really is woeful and nearly unwatchable. Earthrise is nearly as bad. However, Kingdom was wonderful, even though it has many many many issues. Unicron meant nothing and all the best characters were just dead at the end which is a shame. Plus Optimus really is terrible.
The characterizations is all over the place in some cases are spot on but the others were ok to what the heck is this. The dialogue needs to be written better. The interaction between Captain and First Officer watch Star Trek the Next Generation.
Star Trek in general has really good writing. Can't speak for Discovery as I haven't seen it, but it was really good in Next Gen, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Picard.
Fantastic video, doc. I think this video sums up my thoughts on the franchise's future as a whole. I feel like transformers as a franchise is slowly dying. I was impressed by siege when I first saw it, mainly due to the fact I expected complete and utter trash. But after rewatching it, thinking through it and looking at other's opinions. It went from pretty good 4/5 to pretty average 3/5. There's a lot room for improvement.
Bruh like I'm tired of g1 base designs being the trope of the last few years like power of the primes and imma be real my favorite TF show from the last months was cyberverse but I'm not gonna lie they really need to extend the runtime of that show cause it be done way too soon
@@wolfgang6442 Same it’s fucking lame how every transformer show now are just reusing G1 designs, like wtf they are OK but it’s just gone OLD now lmao. I would much prefer the use of the bay verse designs, like that which were used in TFP
I kinda didn't like Megatron or Jetfire characters. For Megatron, I felt like I was tossed a reason rather than feel the confliction for his upbringing as a miner and also I felt like to emotionally understand Megatron I need to read the comics if they were going in that sort of direction of his character. Also he didn't really have a charismatic pull like some other variations of his character or have a engaging dynamic between him and Optimus. For Jetfire, his hand chopping scene left a way too big of an impression for me to believe his character arc as someone who has been honourable. But never mind about my opinion, your review translates clearly what was my problem with siege and brings up very good points about the future of the TF franchise. I like this video and I really hope hasbro listens to these criticisms! (And demands for a studio trigger made show)
It is sad that besides new faction in form of mercenarys( lazy as check name, Star SEEKERS are much better) this is just retailing of G1 with some parts from IDW. And what it is even more sad is the fact that TF Prime, a show from 2013 had better animation, action scenes, and story over all, AND THAT SHOW WAS FOR KIDS! ( And I not even going to copare this to Beast Wars, because lets be real, besides animation, this thing looses in every other category). Like, the show was soo mehh... Even cyberverse have more interesting story, freakien CYBERVERSE, an show for even junger Kids, Hazbro syriesly, WTF?
Honestly, I'm just glad I preferred Prime,Beast Wars,RID 2001, and Unicron Trilogy over G1 all day because back then I used to be a G1 fan because the Micromasters and Pretenders were my personal favorite Transformers series but only problem was that the minorities of G1 wouldn't let me have an opinion on them. Man, the G1 Community can be so cruel to other Transformers fans that like new ideas these days, don't ya think? :/
@@monster-mecha_enthusiast_2002 aha... Interesting pick's. But if I can ask... Why are you asking "me" specifickly what's my thought's on G1 community?
Your analysis loosely reminds me of what they did to Metroid in some way with Other M. though the results were carried out in a different way Irritated existing fans by trying to pander to people who hated the series in general. by trying to appease the wrong crowd, they ended up being appealing to very few
Honestly- I reeeeeeally disliked Optimus Prime from Cyberverse, and here too- now I figured out why- But I really do still love Animated and Beast wars Optimus Prime and Primal respectively. I believe the actor who played Primal- made appearances in the Unicron Trilogy. Or someone similar to him, still I really did like him. Peter though, he was for many fans, including myself who's enjoyed the older G1 show and is relatively new to the franchise, probably is and always will be the one we all will remember being the OG Optimus Prime we loved.
@@marcelo3939 In the War for Cybertron series I thought he did poorly because you can hear when his voice begins to somewhat... not exactly crack but sound stretched to the limits. Like how your younger siblings sound when they imitate their favorite character's voices
It's the Transformers series where the characters never transform on camera, just duck offscreen and reappear after playing the sound. Your attempts at objectivity are too generous; if someone does like it, their opinion is forever suspect.
While I agree with a lot of what you said, I think Jake Foushee really did improve on Cyberverse seasons 2 and 3, and with Prime's new role in that series as the comically serious sorta awkward one, I genuinely don't think Peter Cullen's voice would fit, just like how I can't imagine him playing the Animated version of Prime. He isn't a bad voice actor, I just don't think he had a lot to work with for this version of Prime.
I think it also has to do with poor voice direction. Even the more talented VAs can give a lukewarm performances under the lesser adequate voice directors.
There was a lot I liked about siege like the history between Optimus ultra Magnus and Megatron. I might be in the minority for this but I also loved that bumblebee was a neutral rather than automatic good. I do agree that some of the voice acting with optimus kind of had me wincing especially when he tried to convey emotion. Voice acting is such a critical part to animation because no matter how good the animation look you still need to listen to characters talk and that’s what pulls the viewers in to love and relate to them.
_18:36__ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO CALL PETER CULLEN, THAT COULD BE AN ISSUE, BUT THE KIND OF ISSUE THAT DON'T TAKE ME OFF THE DREAM, BUT THEN..._ *WHY THEY COULDN'T CALL NEIL KAPLAN, GARRY CHALK OR RICHARD EPCAR, THEY MADE AN INCREDIBLE JOB*
@@DrLockdown Oh god I swear if they do ANOTHER show after this dedicated to G1 imma die. Is it truly difficult to perhaps use altered bay verse designs for once? I much prefer alienated robotic bodies over boxy bricks. I love the designs from TFP since they too were inspired from the movies (mostly)
I’m gonna say it. This show needs Hot Rod. Bring on the Turbo-Revin’, Meteor Surfin’, ‘Con Blastin’ Young Punk! Bring on the Goofy Flame Boi! “If you’re gonna ride *Danno, ride in style!” *Hot Rod was speaking to Daniel Witwicky. This is the only time in G1 he gives someone a nickname.
I don't understand the idea that a franchise with an established world, characters and aesthetics has to become a whole different franchise in almost every aspect in order to appeal to a new and different audience. It's a point that younger Transformers fans keep bringing up and I believe that is because they were brought up essentially with spin-offs and alternative versions as their introductory media. Transformers has only made a legitimate effort to return to its roots in the last 3-4 years, but only with half-assed attempts with butchered budgets. But most younger fans immediately point to stagnation as the problem. Like if Hasbro produced any more Transformers-in-name-only media, but kept butchering the budgets, it would make any difference. Hasbro isn't returning to G1 just to appeal to the safety net of the established G1 fan community. They do so because anything else they've done with the franchise, hasn't stuck. People outside the fandom think Transformers kinda stopped in the 80s-90s and then brought back with shitty movies for a round of nostalgic cash grab. There's a world of opportunity for storytelling in the world of G1, but also strong brand identity. I hope they don't start doubting their biggest franchise again just because a vocal minority in the fandom want it to be anything but itself. As for this Netflix series, it feels to me like they're trying to overcompensate for the bombardment of shows aimed for toddlers that have plagued the franchise in the last decade. It occupies itself with ideas and plots that all come from G1, be it comic books or the cartoon. So, evidently, not anything that hasn't already achieved in appealing to kids. But it only has a limited time frame and even more limited budget to explore them. Therefore, all the fun campy pew pew stuff got thrown aside. And without the camp, in Transformers, the drama loses its weight. In order for the concept to work, it needs room to breathe. It's a whole fictional world, after all. Lastly, about Transformers being aimed towards toddlers. I find it tragically misguided that a concept about a sci-fi war (you know, violence and politics and all that kid friendly things that come with it) keeps being tastelessly and forcefully turnt into Teletubbies, again and again. I really don't understand why they can't make up new franchises to cover those target groups. Transformers could directly rival Marvel and Star Wars in every aspect if they just let it be itself.
Ironically the War and Fall of Cybertron games brought more depth to the franchise for a younger audience while still being tied to its G1 roots. I’m just surprised no other media aside from Prime followed this pattern that was already established. They have the tools but just don’t know how to use them.
And that's why South Korea drove out Transformers from the public conscious and offline store shelves with their own original "transformers". Old Hasbro can't beat big giant solid toys, weekly fun cartoons, and tone and marketing unabashedly for kids young as 3! The newest audience there is!
Had a very similar experience myself but you put it much better, it did feel like a failure to me and made me worry for the future. I even believe the trilogy will be unfinished. Had a chat with a mate today and covered a lot of what you mentioned. Doesn’t help that umbrella academy is just so damn good!
I remember learning that the upcoming Legacy toyline was going to feature characters from Prime and getting SO FREAKIN PUMPED. Those figures were (mostly) amazing, and could have been really knocked out of the park when combined with the advances made for Siege and Kingdom. And then I found out they were G1-ified versions of those characters. And that they looked awful. G1 is done. It's been done to death. It's time for something new.
1 of the biggest problems is if they are gunna make a g1 style show at least have g1 voice actors, why have someone doing a impression of Peter Cullen doing prime, it just doesn't work, an its quite insulting to Peter Cullen #notmyprime #optimuscrime
The scene at the end of kingdom with the dead body of a certain character was very touching. This show really did focus on the effects of war for this show. I just wish the character designs didn't look so much like blocky toys. Basically they needed a much bigger budget and more time. I would like to see megatron really go off the deep end but take time doing it. It was a nice nod to the 80's show and beastwars. It was a good try to at least try a more adult take on the story rather than letting that fall on just the shoulders of the comics.
I will say. I gave this show a chance after hearing about it and being spoiled about it for so long. Once I watched it the 2nd Season, and the 3rd Season. I felt no urge to watch it again. Funny thing the Bayfilms are what drew me into Transformers. I liked the films until after Age Of Extinction. Which funny enough I'm struggling to write the "Remake" Fanfiction of it. I was young when I watch the Bay Films. Of course I liked them until I was old enough to understand that. They weren't good. But DrLockdown. I have a huge favor to ask. Could you check out a book I am planning to make? It's on Transformers and I just want opinions of it before I continue any further
One undercover issue I noticed with Cyberverse and Netflix is that it felt like (and I admit that the Cyberverse team got stuck with short episode times that held them back) that they were catering towards the “we don’t need human characters grrr” train and it felt like plots were getting contrived to include Earth but ignore humanity in ways that made it really obvious and kind of goofy. Obviously the MOVIES needed to center the robots for once and One thankfully did that, but we also have Earthspark which has reinforced the value of human-Transformers connections
mid-watching the video, you brought up transformers '84 and that got me thinking why don't they just get simon furman to write for a transformers tv show has like *no one* at hasbro thought about that
I love this analysis so much! Finally someone truly understands how bad this show really is and how negatives can truly outweigh positives might I add. The #1 of those Negatives that drives the show down for me is right on the thumbnail!
lmao, yeah. But turning towards the Netflix show for a minute. You've opened my eyes to how flawed it really was. I knew how bad the voice acting was but I didn't pick up on the writing. Speaking of voice actors, who would you say your top three were from the show?
I agree, they were all stand outs imo. I wasn't a fan of Starscream's voice in CW but Siege felt like it was an improvement. It's become one of my favourite Starscream voices.
I've been waiting my whole life for a War For Cybertron film or TV series and I was beyond hyped for this. I was just so disappointed that in a series called "War For Cybertron" they are barely on Cybertron and barely ever fight. Leaving Cybertron should be a last resort for the Autobots and we should feel the weight of it, but Optimus just has it as his first thought. It's crazy. Also how is the action that dull? I couldn't believe it. I tried finishing season 3 but couldn't
19:08 I don't know why I'm always so surprised whenever clips from my old TF Tataki videos get used by other youtubers, as it's probably the only thing I'll ever be known for on this platform, but it's amusing any time I see it.
I get what you're saying about bringing in new fans and all but that's exactly what the star wars sequel series did and they failed miserably. They catered to new fans and left out the old ones, the ones more likely to buy their merchandise or invest any type of money into it. Anywayz, there may have been an easter egg here or there but this was supposed to be a new jumping on point for new comers as well as something to appease the older fans. Hell, the Transformers 1986 movie was my first exposure to the series and although I didn't care for the cartoon I fell in love with it despite that. As a first time viewer it gave me all the info I needed to determine who was who and what was what, the importance of Prime dying and passing on the Matrix. You mentioned a IDW reference (which I've read nearly the entire series) point is, that wasn't there for them (the new comers) to get, it was a nod to us from them saying, " yea, we know our stuff too." Now I'm not gonna sit back and say seige was perfect because it most certainly wasn't, but I don't feel like the 'issues' brought up were enough to make the series unenjoyable. There are things that need to be addressed and hopefully they are with the subsequent series on the way. Despite my comment I did enjoy your view of the series though but it brought to a mind simpler times, when someone watched something to enjoy it, who either liked or didn't like it. This age of having to dissect, break down and analyze every bit, strand and piece of presented information has taken away the most important and primary reason the media was created in the first place, to just sit back and enjoy it. Imagine us as kids 'reviewing' doing 'break downs' and 'explanations' for every show we watched on Saturday/Sunday morning. It wouldn't have been fun anymore, at least not in the same way now would it? Great video tho, keep up the good work
@@DrLockdown well it was actually both. Star Wars was never a masterpiece of writing to me, in fact the things I find most interesting in star wars come from the EU and things George Lucas had little or nothing to do with. Image what your feelings for Star Wars would be now if the revelation in Empire was something other the Vader being Luke's father. That one little thing, which was sorta thrown in last minute created interest and intrigue for an otherwise basic scifi story.
@@DrLockdown oh and the point of the alphatrion protocol was to ally bumblebee with prime and the autobots. In that weird dream sequence he asked the ghost of Alphatrion what his purpose was and Trion said something to the effect of Prime witnessing his greatest victories and defeats and he(bumblebee) just needs to be there for him.
The trilogy is safe, for a lack of a better term. They retread the exact same plot beats that have come before in different iterations. And it feels like something you've seen before
Im actually not a big fan of the overall visual direction of the show, but that's mainly due to the lackluster world design. The world feels super hollow and empty from the scenes I've watched, and not in the cool "desolate and apocalyptic" way that the High Moon games pulled off. Like, the environment never feels relevant in any given scene. It all feels flat. The characters could be interacting with one another in a complete vacuum 99% of the time with a few props and literally nothing would change. Why does the majority of Cybertron's buildings look like a bunch of empty warehouses and corridors? Where the fuck is any evidence that these robot beings LIVE in these ruined cities? They're just walking and fighting...and walking and fighting...and walking and fighting... Like, Beast Wars made a better use of the characters interacting with their environment and that was made with less advanced technology. People tend to look over this element cuz when it's done well it's not noticable, but jeez man I couldn't get over this when watching the first episode and it immediately turned me off. I apologize if it seems like I spammed the comment section btw. For some reason RU-vid likes to delete my comments until it doesn't feel like it after an arbitrary amount of attempts to get it to stick.
27:59 thinking back on it, The High Moon Games were what kept me a fan after Animated Ended and the only source of TF media was the Bayverse which had a great ending after Dark of the Moon, and Prime's Aesthetic didn't work on me for some figures,
I'm actually confident the next season will be better, but for me it's already done. They had their chance with getting a new audience and squandered it.
The dialogue really improved in Earthrise as they were able to focus on a smaller cast of characters. I felt like Siege tried doing far too many things at once and made the variety that the show runners wanted to portray become a negative. Many of the Autobot characters are so generic and have no real personality on contrary to what you said in the video. I didn’t feel a connection to really anyone besides maybe Elita 1 because she actually had some personality. The rest of them sound like they’re all voiced by the same VA but with a slightly different voice just leaving me lost half the time on who’s who. Stand out characters like Iron Hide, Wheeljack, and Red Alert all just become essentially background characters. Don’t even get me started on how bad Optimus Prime is not only in voice but also in character.
I agree with a lot of your points. As someone who literally grew up with Transformers since before the first live action movie I watched my fair share of the series. Siege was an interesting one. It wasn't terrible, but I wouldn't put it on Prime's level of writing and animation. But rather Siege is it's own thing, and I'm glad for it. However it certainly has some flaws, specially with the characters. Optimus, for me, wasn't terrible and you know why? His voice actor in my country was the actual one, the "official" if you will, so I got happy from knowing the voice of my favorite autobot was portrayed by my favorite voice actor. It decreased the weight that was the inconsistence of Optimus. Maybe I was lucky, maybe I'm not, who knows what the future has in store for us. But yes, Siege is an okay series. Leagues better than some of the garbage we watched previously, but not on the same level of Transformers Prime or etc.
Transformers Prime was not only leagues ahead of the majority of other shows purely to its beautiful CGI and writing, but in my opinion also due to how it was DIFFERENT. I loved the character designs, which were a little based on the the originals while also making them more realistic and robotic fledged. The voice acting couldn’t have been better (but Raph was a little shaky at start), and it felt based on a whole new universe unlike that which I had seen before. the camera motion effects and music were a marriage made in heaven and every scene felt cinematic. Stunning I would say
Ignoring the obvious issues with Optimus, I felt it also struggled with pacing. The pacing is pretty bad. My main example is… I think it’s the second season where the autobots left on Cybertron try to blow up the Decepticon colosseum for some reason. It’s built up dramatically with these timers when I feel like remote detonation would easily be an option, and the fact that Shockwave never really questioned WHY they were there and kinda just… fought Elita… without thinking of the logic behind why she’s there didn’t make sense. And each seasons was so short that they didn’t really stick with any big plot points for more than an episode or two
That friend who said the games weren’t good because they weren’t a film or a cartoon is the most reprehensible form of gatekeeping i could think of. If anything it is a self defeating belief.
My issue with modern transformers media like the shows is they seem terrified of moving on from G1. What was once a fun nostalgic lookback to the origin of the franchise when the live action movies first dropped has became a stagnant retelling of G1 over and over with the same barely changing core cast of Autobots and Decpticons.
Honestly, I found the show just plain boring. Earthrise was better, but not by much. My biggest gripe, though, would be the voice acting. Christ on a STICK the voice acting. Jetfire sounds more slimy than a sewer drain despite having a redemption arc, Elita-One and Cog just complain all the time, Ultra Magnus is a non-entity, and Prime... fuck me gently with a chainsaw, Optimus Prime. Whenever I hear a new rendition of the big OG O.P., I always think of that one interview when Peter Cullen said how he got the voice of Optimus. TLDR, his military brother heard about it and told him, "If you're gonna be a hero, Peter, be strong enough to be gentle." That silky voice delivery with the wisdom of decades and the pain of war is how I hear Optimus. It's why I love _Prime_ Prime so much. Foushee and Bailey doing IMPRESSIONS of Optimus are one thing; actually playing Optimus Prime is another. Hell, I feel anyone can do their own version of Optimus just by sticking to that quote. Even a good Elita-One can use that quote for reference!!
Okay stop right there. I’ve barely started the video, but if what its title claims is true and you have indeed found an legitimately objective problem with the show, then that *isn’t* your opinion, _you found a legitimately objective problem with the show._ people can choose to subjectively ignore the problem, that’s their prerogative. Don’t say “this is just my opinion” unless you’re *actually* sharing your opinion, not pointing out an objective flaw the show demonstrably has. There _is_ a difference, even if some people say there isn’t just to avoid criticism. Edit: finished the video, and... you’ve given me something to think about. I have the opposite opinion as you, I think that desperately trying to atract a new audience that will never come at the expense of older fans is what killed a lot of franchises like Star Wars and Marvel Comics (not the movies). My guess is that we’re *both* right, media needs to appease old fans while _also_ trying to attract new ones. With that said, I agree with everything else you said. You brought up legitimate objective criticisms. Don’t delegitimize them by calling them your opinion, you’re just giving the people you’re criticizing a chance to disregard what you have to say.
@DrLockdown That matches what I’ve seen as well. Unfortunately, society as a whole seems to have quite the adversarial relationship with criticism, even that of the constructive variety.
Don't get me wrong; needlessly complaining is awful. That's why I try to strike a balance; why my next video essay will be the praises of Cyberverse. But yeah, it's not about criticism; it's about the desire to fight for something
So I rewatched this show the other day and good god you were right. Does Jake Foushee not know what a second take is?! (no wonder this show killed his career) It’s like cyberverse with all the fun parts sucked out.
before watching this after no joke just completing the trilogy myself my one critisim i have so far is that the fact these 3 seasons only got 6 episodes for whatever reason is my biggest problem. everything as well passed as it is in some areas feels rushed and ive noticed characters seem to act strange from prior incarnations that's not a bad thing its just what ive noticed. the ideas and plot of the trilogy i love the third season especially but it feels hampered down by the episode limit and im kinda mad that the nemesis prime thing wasnt as fleshed out as it was at least in my opinion.
