Sorry but I’m still not getting the hate of The War for Cybertron Trilogy. Maybe I’m just a moron myself but I don’t think it was as bad as some think. Hell it was actually kind of really entertaining. The one thing I was annoyed with was Megatron constantly having such a loyal following and always seemingly had the leg up. Then again it made Megatron extremely hate able for my taste and I believe that was the intention then mission accomplished!
My viewers actually did the exact opposite but for the same reason, they wanted me to do the worst figures of the year second, to save the best for last. Also from what I'm hearing all copies of SG Starscream have the same problem.
@@DrLockdown By the way I don't think you are crazy, I still have memories at my CRUSHING disappointment as a kid of spending all my Christmas and birthday money plus promising extra chores for 3 months to get a Devestator off Ebay, and then getting it and have it being the lamest thing I'd ever seen to that point.
Wow, I can’t believe I’m reading this. It’s very rare for me to see two RU-vidrs talking to each other without it being a crossover video... now that I type this and re-read it y’all should do a crossover video. That would be so cool
@@DrLockdown I second that, family shouldn't treat you this way, if it wasn't for the couff (don't know how YT will respond to the real word), and I usually don't go to the meet ups, I would have gladly wanted to give you a support hug.
Just checked my SG starscream. Doing just fine, so hopefully it stays in good condition. Suck to hear about that though. That pure white is a huge appeal of that figure
@@DrLockdown hopefully it’s just an issue with the initial run, as mine was purchased shortly after the initial Asian launch and it yellowed rapidly despite not being exposed to sun.
I agree with your opinion of the Seeker thing. Why can’t they make a new mould from scratch and try their best instead of using the Classics version? They did great Tetrajets, and then they clucked up the next mould.
Hey Doc, I just wanted to say I hope these first couple of months have been treating you well and I hope the rest of the years treats you better. Hope the move goes well. Keep up the good work Doc 😉
My copy wouldn’t even stand. Great head sculpting work and cartoon accuracy for sure. I ended up selling mine. Almost kept it for alt mode but I still have the TRU releases of the seekers
Finally someone talks about Blurr's face! I usually don't agree with you on a lot of figures, but I feel the exact same way about ss86 Blurr. Ugly and boring all around.
I must say, something i've noticed with the video is that sound effects are a lot quieter than before, which I commend those sound effects can be distracting, somewhat irritating when used repeatedly, so seeing them being toned down to let your voice take centre stage is a good idea
@@DrLockdown an excellent idea, it waaas kind of disorienting how loud the sound effects were in the past, thankfully these presets should eliminate such issues for future videos, consider me excited
My worst figure of 2021 was, ironically, my favorite figure of 2021 as well. Ss86 hot rod was a joy to play with and transform, it was almost perfect except for 1 GLARING ISSUE. The way the arm pipes peg into the legs means 2 things-- 1. The entire vehicle mode is held together by 2 tiny clasps. And 2. Said tiny clasps are forced to transform in a way that encourages them to break. I transformed ss86 hot rod once before I had to get a replacement.
My SG Starscream hasn't yellowed at all yet, I've had him in a shady spot on my shelf and he's had no exposure to sunlight. I'm so glad I watched this video. It sucks that this is an issue, I really like the way he looks. I don't think MP-52 is that bad. My only problem with it is fear of paint chipping but other than that its been fine for me.
Netflix Bee was my first exposure to the mold and I love him. I now own Buzzworthy Cliffjumper, and unfortunately mine got hit with the QC hammer so he isn’t as solid as Bee
Great worst review of 2021. I'm looking forward to your best of 2021. Waiting to see if planet X starsaber makes it on there. And to see if any iron factory ones make it. I hope the move went well and your doing ok. Thanks for all the great reviews keep up the amazing work!!!
I'd love to have the maverick mold, only for the purpose of repainting it. I think the mold itself is amazing, that jet mode is fire and the robot has a macross quality to it, but the plastic and colors are.... ugly. I know with a custom paint job and maybe a different head it would be one of the best modern jetformers
Eh, I’m not so sure about that. While whatever custom paint job you can/could give it will make it look amazing, I still don’t think that’d make it the best jetformer. I know that there are better jetformers out there. If I’m being honest, I think one of the best jetformers is the old Power Core combiners Decepticon combiner (idk the name). He has a sleek jet form, and while the robot mode is a little janky it’s still great. I think I was 2 or 3 when Power Cores was a thing and somehow he’s survived amazingly over these years with the only thing that’s gotten loose being his toes and I lost his target master partner a while ago, but then again I don’t know if he would still be living today if I didn’t because toddlers and clear plastic don’t mix. If you want a really good jetformer to customize, look into finding him. Edit: Skyhammer! That’s his name, Skyhammer!
@@StrykerPrimeProductions I have Skyhammer and really like it! though it is small. But in the meantime I've got the maverick mold, for like 15 bucks, and I love it. definitely a great jetformer, the plane mode is just perfect and the robot is very cool! will paint him and give him a new head when I get a good idea for him
Yellowing on SG Starscream interests me...my Kingdom Cyclonus has plastic bits which react to UV light, though half of the pieces don't react to the uv light, same under normal light though... QC? Not sure
that 16 looks more like the DOTM roller, an extra figure in a bigger package, than a single figure. also, the sransformation somewhat looks alike. 13. I love G1 devastator, but the original toy was just so clunky. future versions are better, but the original is just not as good as any other combiner altogheter, and a few non-transformers ones 7 it's the Plankformers!
Dr - great article, and good luck on your move! I really have list of pet peeves of my 2021 purchases, and one disappointment: Couldn’t Thrilling 30’s Jetfire’s hands be designed to fold/slide away. Couldn’t Cybertron Deluxe Excellion have longer forearms and why the need to wiggle the lower leg before extending leg to avoid breaking the hip ball joint. Also, why do G1 Computron’s arms extend out asymmetrically from the body? If one did disappoint me - Legends of Cybertron Megatron - front wings on very flimsy/fragile plastic, and with all the leg articulation, you can’t even raise the arms. A dishonorable mention would be Generations Selects Zetar’s lower legs falling off in some poses…
That's part of the joy of these lists: comparing and contrasting. I'm certain someone finds MP52 the best toy ever made, and that decision is no less valid
Thankfully the only one I got in 2021 that I truly don’t like is that Elita 1. Bot mode is okay but the joints are too tight and that transformation is a nightmare. I’m tempted to take the car off and just call her the best RED line figure! I hope this year goes better. Christmas sounds like it was a nightmare for you.
22:21 Oh man these little guys were my first ever Transformer toys, but I lost them like 15 years ago and I never knew the name of 'em. So this was kinda mind blowing for me haha.
Scorponok is the one Kingdom figure I will definetively not buy, it looked bad from the pictures already and the character felt always a bit of a non-entity to me. Sincerely "worst figure" in my case is relative because I don't buy that many and I'm usually pretty selective, the "least good" is Road Rage due to the inherent issues of the mold but even then she's fine. PS: sincerely I think you are too hard on the CF/BB mold transformation scheme, I managed to get Bumblebee at normal price and I find it's a nice little figure. I would never had paid the stupid prices on eBay for it, but really the alt mode is delightful and the bot mode is a good representation of G1 Bee without being slavish.
Thank You, I had a lot of fun watching. I like how Maverick even looks bad in the package. Send me your 7-11 Ultra Magnus I am jealous. Arc/Lea... the pinnacle of "everything for the robot mode" design. I actually like the weird paint scheme. I especially liked you picking on G1 Devastator. I must forever leave my anime color release in the box or I'll be horribly disappointed. Your SG Starcream will yellow just like the first one sell now!!
There's an MP7/11 on carousell Singapore for $380SGD. That's about what I paid to import it back when it first released. www.carousell.sg/search/Transformers%207%2F11/
"There's a context for everything." Matt Easton would be proud. Honestly SS66 Hot Rod was alright for me... until I got Kindgom Rodimus. With how much better that figure did everything compared to Hot Rod, at least. I realised the transformation wasn't that fun, and one of his pipes breaking so it doesn't stay on isn't a good look. I also got the re-issued Studio Series ROTF Bumblebee and... man. That transformation's a nightmare for the size and makes me appreciate Offroad Bumblebee so much more.
@@DrLockdown Oh it was fine enough, don't get me wrong! Just wasn't fun to transform after a while and it made me want to play with Offroad Bee more as a result, that's all. And to be fair, I still haven't delved into older lines or third party for budget reasons.
I had the Original Masterpiece Starscream when I was a lot younger, The Fucker disintegrated as soon as I tried to transform him into his F-15 alt-mode, Not fucking getting any Masterpiece figures again, ESPECIALLY THE NEW PRIME, THAT THING IS FUCKING CANCER IN PHYSICAL FORM so, yeah if you think the current Masterpiece figures are worse, That original Starscream was just too fuckin Fragile, only piece I have left is the head.
Tracks is bad. It’s composed entirely of translucent plastic so brittle that it makes me worry it’s going to shatter every time I pick it up, which is even worse because of _how horribly the parts clash, grip and snap during transformation!_ And mine showed up with stress marks on the rearview mirrors right out of the box. That, plus robot mode is 35% backpack and vehicle mode is 65% backpack! I don’t understand how you can forgive it!
My usual ideology is a toy needs to be good enough to warrant upgrade kits. If I already don't like the figure, I don't feel it's fair to try and make it good. That money could be spent making a figure I like even better. Also some of them just don't work. Scorponok's upgrades all mess with the transformation, meaning you fix some things but ruin others.
17:43 I wish I knew about the problems scorponok had before getting him. I bought legacy Tarantulas and adored it and I wanted to collect the predacons so I saw Scorponok at my local comic shop on sale, and I bought him thinking I got a good deal until I played with him, the transformation felt unfinished and the claws were loose causing them to fall off and same goes with the scorpion legs on the back.
I used to be a masterpiece elitist but I’ve seriously cut it back to just favourites because mainline is just killing it. Like if I had known road rage would come out I wouldn’t have bought the MP a year back
@@DrLockdown yeah me too! Hasbro used to be better than this! My friend has a Prowl figure from generations (or classics?) And it still hasn't yellowed but his SS Ratchet is more Yellow than bumblebee!
I have to agree on #9. The reissue Beast Wars Scorponok is so much better than the Kingdom version. The color scheme is better, the scale and proportions are better, and transformation is a lot more fun.
Quintesson Judge I feel can be given something resembling a pass cause like... let's be real, noone is buying a judge for a transformation. you just want a funny lil guy with the spinning heads and the tendrils. I get the complaints, a more interesting transformation would have been preferable, but I doubt there's really much you CAN do with that specific design.
Aw, I actually liked NA Straxus! I’ve got my gripes, but that’s all I’ll get about of the character. I do agree with the transformation standpoint. It’s not fun!
Agreed, his only valid point is the transformation is a pain. Otherwise, he's quite awesome IMO and I'm not even a fan of the character. Haven't had any paint chipping on mine and I've posed him around quite a bit. The alt mode is goofy but look up the old Marvel comics, it is what he looked like in alt mode.
I don't think Blurr is that bad, but then again, I only started collecting Transformers last year, so in terms of experience, I haven't experienced the Titans Return version. So, there is a kind of rose tinted glasses effect going on here.
I am sure it was mentioned but the yellowing which you mentioned in this case isn't from sun damage but from oxygen. There is a way to reverse it (there is a video on youtube for it) - you just need an air tight jar and a chemical that you might be able to get at a hardware store - sorry I can't think of the name.
Do get that its a personal list but I loved MP52 over Crimson. Transforming Crimson is an absolute NIGHTMARE and the transformation has resulted in a ridiculous amount of paint chipping. I bought a Crimson and never transformed it just to have the "nicer" Starscream. MP52 however, I have enjoyed transforming continuously. The only bummer for MP52, for me, are the lack of waist swivel and the fact that the stand is pretty much useless in robot mode. But I'll take those compromises over what Crimson had to do get a waist swivel and a slightly better back (I don't mind the back kibble on MP52)
I just love how right you were about the retro Scorponok reissue being better than the kingdom one. I got it as a Christmas present from a friend this year, and it was amazing. It's surprisingly articulated despite its age, and the gimmicks it has don't even cause any compromise. The only flaws I could find were the fact that the scorpion mode looks kinda hollow, one of the claws can't be fully closed due to the cyber bee, and the legs feel a bit loose (it's not like it instantly falls when you try to make it stand up, but they still move a bit too easy.) Nevertheless, it's still a great figure. Thank you for having advised me to not but Kingdom Scorponok, Doc.
Crazy that the money saved from passing on a masterpiece scale combiner would ONLY be able to purchase about ten *LEGENDS* scale 3P figs. Their current $50-$65 pricepoints for legends figures are outta hand. I guess I'm spoiled by their earlier days of pricing and MFT options that were typically in the $17 range, when I'd even tack on ebay 15% off flash sales to get even more savings.
Yeah I don't buy his statement that it'll be remembered as one of the worst MPs. It's definitely divisive but there are plenty of people who enjoy the mold, at least in the FB groups I'm in.
I'm gonna be honest I love the cliff jumper bumblebee mold because partsforming or no it looks great in both modes I think it gets WAY to much hate for parts forming. I fuckin love this stupid little mold it looks great I don't really get any of the criticism tbh lmao
the only thing i hate about 3rd party legends is that some of the clever solutions are never adopted by companies that make chug or masterpiece scaled figues
2021 was the 1st year I kept track of my figures. Anyway, hear are my 10 worst figures with a mini review. 10. Studio series car dropkick: Has a decent lookin robot mode and car, but has a very fidily transformation. 9. Prime hotshot: Good transformation and great car mode, but mediocre robot mode. 8. Kingdom cheator: Nice but bland compared to tigatron and shadow panther. 7. Earthrise doubledealer: Flimzy but Funny. 6. Reisue mindwipe: The worst of the 3 deception headmasters. Feels to bland. 5. Kingdom paliotrex: Alright but feet feel's to stumpy. 4. Studio series Kup: Decent but his break apart gimmick hinders the transformation. 3. Earthrise growl: Not a fun micromaster. 2. Studio series DOTM soundwave: Boring. 1. Studio series Volkswagon Bumblebee: Terible in every way. onlything positive is the sword it came with that I gave to my jeep bumblebee.
I can definitely agree with you for Prime Hotshot, but at least I have that mold; and watching Emgo's review of SS VW BB is what convinced me to shell out extra for the MPM version. Seriously the Studio Series gun weapon usage required you to rip off his entire arm, and then for the battle-mask you have to Bayverse Prime poor BB's face, and folding the roof into place made me think if I got it I would break the damn thing (I have that same worry when it come to Tracks.
@@DrLockdown The main problems I have with his figure are the hood transformation, the fact it can't tab in properly in car mode, causing it to look a little broken, and the feel in hand both in robot mode and transformation feels cheep. (Im not saying your opinion is wrong DR, but I just wanted to clarify myself.)
@@theblackheart5027 honestly 4 months later, I would change the position of the dropkick and bumblebee because with bumblebee sure he's a little kibbly, but at least he can transform and not feel like hell (Car Dropkick). Also the worst list wasn't exactly a hate list, just a list of figures that were my least favorite of the year(but if I were to change one thing about it, I would probably move some characters around.
One of the worst of 2021 was Kingdom Soundwave. I was so excited for him, and I called two different GameStops to ask if they had him, and I hate calling stores! Butterfly joins in the shoulders are stupidly loose Left knee very loose Torso pegs too tight so he will get stress marks ON THE FRONT OF THE TOY if I transform him anymore, so basically I payed for a toy that was broken out of the box and I can’t find another copy. Also Hades Megatron was kinda disappointing. He looks cool but he can’t hold up Hades in weapon mode and transforming him is confusing, and Gora ii wouldn’t look right in weapon mode so I tried to fix it but I broke him
I think the problem with MP is that they keep taking figures and forcing g1 accuracy into them even if it becomes a detriment to the toy, it feels like they engineer the skeleton of the figure first and then sculpt it into the character it is meant to be without changing the skeleton to work with the design, instead of the other way around
19:33 Fun fact actually I actually have the beast wars reissue I found it at my local ross For eleven dollars Quite a steal actually And there was a whole bunch of them I don't want to open it until we move tho So it stays in the box until we get to the house
I can't say that Top Lists are my thing, but I can/could offer my opinion about some of the entries on your list here. I don't hate the Dominus set. I quite like the Barricade in some capacity, but my issues lie in some tolerance choices. It's not exactly the clear plastic used, as I have watched other reviews prior to getting the set, and I have been careful on transforming him (and for that time I got him in vehicle mode, it did 'sit flush' (I say that for the car roof's sake). But my problem lies in the feet, with the worst offenders being the heels. They're so tight, I'm afraid of breaking the figure because of it. (And I do find it somewhat hilarious and a bit frustrating that the shoulder JOINTS are strong/tight to move, while the shoulder TABS are weak that they move off when trying to move the shoulder.) And no, I don't mind the lack of purple on the Earthrise version, since both versions are going for different aesthetics, and something tells me that they somewhat prioritized the vehicle mode on the Earthrise (yes, hence said clear plastic). (And I can't say that P-CP is a bad repaint, just needed some form of effort put into it, and I did paint the wheels red and a bit of Punch's thighs red (oh, and I painted the tail lights on Barricade as well as the black shoulders.), and no, the acrylic paint I had to do this didn't come with silver paint.) The Sparkless Seeker is an oddity. It looks less like a zombie and more like a generic Seeker with those colors and smirking face. (Maybe it was the point, maybe it wasn't. They did give him two Targetmasters, after all.) And yes, painted eyes over the light piping does suck, but I doubt the light piping would be effective if the eyes WEREN'T painted. (Seriously, who's dumb idea was it to go with that choice of transparent plastic?) Sure, a part of me wants the world collide box set, if for the Fangry and Nemesis Primal (& if I wanted the latter, I'd want the Shadow Panther to go along with it). I can say that obscure characters of The Transformers intrigues me*. (I'll find a way to acquire the WFC Horrorcons.) (And I don't really collect third party figures and Masterpiece figures, though I WILL admit I am intrigued by those Masterpiece(s) Road Rage and Exhaust.) I don't hate the Earthrise Arcee, and I'd say that Arcee is (probably) the best of the mould, but I doubt you'd care. And I could say that your list here is the kind of thing you need to get off your chest. (I never voted on what list you should do.)
(*Dunno if the the thing to 'steer the ship' out of the trajectory of what Transformers media aims at in terms of bringing in more people (based on what you had to say from those Diagnosis Insanities) would be to give the obscure entities the spotlight as opposed to the same characters over and over (ex: Optimus Prime, Megatron, Bumblebee, etc.), but what would I know?
It's more that its mediocre in comparison to the movie bots. The transformations and paintwork aren't of the same quality, aside from the dinobots who are amazing. It's also the fact that they deliberately make fewer movie bots in exchange for more geewun, which is getting real tiresome at this point. It's not even the interesting stuff past 87 that never got updates: it's the same old characters on a constant loop
The nemesis primal looks like such a cool figure but it comes in a bad overpriced (secondary market) figure pack. Could we see a generation selects rerelease heck hasbro could release it as a shattered glass version. Something else that would be a cool release is tetra jet coneheads it’s a good figures so why not remould the wings to match each conehead but cyber stylized and do a legacy release. For kingdom tracks maybe if you don’t care for the colours get the roadrage version due to if you find another tracks figure you prefer like an older or newer figure you won’t be stuck with the floppy knees of kingdom
I think RU-vid naturally promotes more of my negative reviews. Must be algorithm nonsense. If it's any consolation, the next five videos are good to be positive.
For one thing, I'm a chug collector only. For two, I haven't been collecting nearly as long in my adult life as you or many others (started during Earthrise, shortly before Kingdom dropped), so rather than restrict myself to 2021, I'll simply speak of the figures I've gotten up until today in mid-2022. These are also in no particular order. Legacy Core Skywarp: I have no qualms with the figure itself. In fact I rather like the Core Seeker mold. It's the accessory choices that annoy me. Releasing a Seeker without Null Rays is blasphemy. And the thing they were removed for - his dinky little axe(?) doesn't even combine with the other two Core weapons properly out of the box, because its 3mm peg is too long. I had to shave over half the length of the peg down with a file. Design your combining weapon gimmick right Hasbro, this is a rookie mistake. Accessory snafus all around. Earthrise Cliffjumper: What can be said by me that hasn't already been said by the Doctor himself? Now, I don't hate partsforming across the board, but this figure does it poorly, and it feels like the designers just got lazy and cheated. The partsformed piece doesn't even look good as a "shield", and his back looks terrible without it pegged on (even though the backpack also juts up weirdly), essentially making it feel like a necessary chore. And the peg in the "shield" is impossible to flip out without a tool like a flathead or file. Just bad design. Also I don't like his feet, they're too big proportionally and make this figure look like the clown that it is. (Netflix Bumblebee is more forgiveable because the shape of the retooled pieces make it look a lot better than the clunky, boxy Cliffjumper.) Earthrise Arcee: Barebones design, bad vehicle mode, barely a transformer. "Shellformers" *can* be done well - like 86 Scourge - but this figure is not that. And her face is just... kind of offputting. The hoverboard is like Cliffjumper's "shield", it barely looks like a hoverboard and seems like a thinly veiled excuse for partsforming to make the backpack look right, because the designers didn't want to include a piece that has to be removed for bot mode and then literally does nothing when detached. Feels like cheating again. I only keep her because I want to own a representation of the G1 character. She's easily the least favorite figure in my collection. Elita One is more forgiveable to me similar to Netflix Bee, because the retooled parts make her bot mode look a bit better. She gets a pass by comparison. Kingdom Dracodon: I like the Vertebreak mold, I do. And a green redeco *sounds* cool. But they absolutely botched the execution. I know they were going for "radioactive", but the green they picked says "hi-liter" to me. The look of the color makes the figure *look cheap* even. And the worst part is, the gold accents are great! If only they made him a darker, less garish green I would actually love this figure. As it is now, it's just a disappointment. Kingdom Scorponok: Short and dumpy, and the altmode feels incomplete. I don't like how his chest just kinda hangs half-open on the underbelly in beast mode. It looks like the transformation hasn't been finished. The first time I transformed him, I literally tried multiple times to see if it could be closed or if I was reading the instructions wrong, in disbelief. Same story as ER Arcee, I keep him just to *have* him, not because I particularly like the figure. Earthrise Wheeljack: I don't dislike the figure, I just think it could be better. The "wings" and the shoulder cannon(?) are kinda pathetic, and they could've done better. But I supposed upgrade kits fix that.
Honorable Mention to Kingdom Galvatron: He's not *bad,* but I would've preferred a release that was like Legacy Galvatron from the beginning. The "battle damage" was oddly-done and doesn't even look in-place with other Siege battle damage. Great figure, but the Legacy release is what Kingdom Galvatron should've been from the start. Thus as the only figure that I've actually sold (because I bought Legacy Galvatron to replace him), Kingdom Galvatron gets an honorary place in my list.
Wait. So what's wrong with the current MP line? You talked about how much you hated it. I think this is the first video I've seen that bashes it. Others I've seen praise the hell out of them.
At the time this video came out, MP was making figures more and more toon accurate at the cost of worse and worse engineering. My review in MP52 Starscream encapsulates that period of time, MP wise, pretty well
@@DrLockdown It was refreshing to hear that. They do look nice. I kind of wish that they had started out like that but for me it was the cheating with faux parts, over engineering, and the PRICE. Also the sudden shift in style. I already have my old MP collection. I wasn't going to start over with a NEW line of MP figures that now clash with the aesthetics of the old one and also cost a whole lot more. I like me old MP figures. I'll check out your MP52 video.
13:30 Yeah, consider it's pretty much a Diaclone toy that was later rebranded as a Transformers toy, it sadly is a hard truth that it really hasn't aged well.
i have g2 ramjet that uses the same mold as sandstorm and i personally think the toy is pretty good and the jet form look beautiful but i also have g1 dirge and the wings can't fold on the sides of the legs and somethings don't like to stay together sadly i wish it would stay together because the dirge mold isn't half bad to be honest
I got to take a look at a copy of the for me WFC retrospective, and I guess it's fine...but it pales in comparison to the Funpub version. Really lacks those extra details
