Imagine if they had made 5 handcrafted planets with maps comparable in size to an elder scrolls game, rather than 1000 proceduarlly generated turds. That would have been truely compelling.

I don't think it's realistic to even make 5 planets with the size of Skyrim without procedurally generation. Even one planet would be impossible to make it feel it right without this kind of aproach bethesda did.

Yeeeeeah but 1000 planets sounds cool when you're on that stage in a sexy leather jacket. Its a great way to finish the presentation. Like, 'BOOM 1000 planets, that's right. Good night'. When you sell it like that people talk more, there's more articles written, the pre-order sale goes up, people will tune into twitch, the merchandise goes out the door, people just buy a console to play the game, etc. Doesn't matter if it doesn't stick. They have already made the money. People not complaining about turd planets is proof enough that nobody cares. Its just fallout in space. Not a great one as promised but under-delivering is pretty much the meta now.

The problem of the walls in Skyrim vs the walls in starfield, is that in Skyrim, they said 'you get to explore skyrim' so when the invisible walls are there at the border of Skyrim, you say 'well they said Skyrim I have Skyrim I can't expect high rock too. But with starfield, they said 'you get 1000 planets'. And then when you try to explore it like every other Bethesda game you get invisible walls. So as far as my understanding is, you drop into a planet find the 3 or so points of interest and then leave. There isn't ever anything *more* to that tile. It leaves it feeling more empty because after the first few chunks you get the idea of what to expect.

@mabybee

Luke is pretty good about being upfront about his biases while also trying to stay neutral in what he’s observing. He went to school for journalism so he has that kind of mind but I think it gets lost sometimes when it comes to the critical thinking aspect of his videos because that’s hard work relative to what most untrained viewers are interested in. If someone also isn’t familiar with formal arguments or debate-style rhetoric, his “reporting” can sound much harsher than it actually is since he’s pointing out more technical things or the reputation someone like Todd Howard has built in stretching reality, but if you strip down the emotional aspect of interpretation, most of what he says is “if you don’t care, that’s fine, I’m not trying to ruin anything, but for those that are interested and do prefer to be informed about these things, this is the reality of it.” That upsets a lot of people since they’re approaching it from an emotional standpoint as fans of something where every statement is either to support the side of a product being one of the greatest ever or as an enemy to that viewpoint.

The invisible wall in Skyrim is right at the edge of the map, on the border with other countries. Its not comparable to Starfield. This would be the equivalent of letting you explore exactly one town and the outlying area before you hit a wall and then have to load up the next region of Skyrim.

perfect metaphor but in this metaphor instead of just opening and leaving out the city gate, you have to fast travels to the stables (it puts you outside, you then walk in loading screen 2) you then get on your horse and it plays an unskippable 20 second animation of your horse walking out of the stables then instead of ride your horse to the location you get a secondary map to then fast travel on on your horse. You cannot dismount. You must then watch another animation to place your horse at a temporary stable. Then you can walk 500 feet after dismounting your horse and overriding the point of it to a generic AI generated dungeon. Once you complete the dungeon, you fast travel back to your horse and repeat the whole process.

For me, the existential dread (dramatic, I know) sets in when you are constantly aware that you’re in a game due to fast travel being the only travel. In Skyrim/Fallout 4 you had a world space you could traverse on foot and it felt like you were situated in a location in a world because you went from point A to B without a loading screen, discounting entering areas. Starfield doesn’t allow traveling unless you fast travel, which means there is always a loading screen, and since I’m always aware of the procedurally generated world spaces which pull from a pool to sprinkle 5-6 areas of interest, it makes me feel like I’m in a holo-deck, the voyage from planet to planet, orbit to atmosphere to surface, star system to star system, is just always a loading screen. The game tells me I went from A to B but I didn’t experience any of it.
@xxCrimsonSpiritxx
@xxCrimsonSpiritxx Год назад
I wouldn't have cared so much about having to go through a loading screen every 2 minutes, I just wish they would have made it a bit more immersive in doing so, fast travel takes me out of immersion so quickly it makes lose interest in exploring, like, you can travel from a planet in a star system to another planet in another star system with one click, when I wished that you'd have to take the actual route instead Yes it might make travel a bit tedious, but honestly if we're traveling from a star system to another light years away we should keep in mind that space IS REALLY FREAKING HUGE, having that as an option would had retained SOME levels of immersion for me personally, rather than catering to players with minimal levels of patience, I strongly believe that games today are becoming dumber and dumber because of the over simplification of gameplay aspects in order to reach broader audience (which I understand, and am okay with it) but why can't I have the option to have a more detailed gameplay? How hard is it to turn features on and off depending on player choices at the start of the game?? (why is that the case for gender pronounce but not actual gameplay?)
@yourgoing2h8me
@yourgoing2h8me Год назад
Ironic for me, My favorite way to get immersed in FO4 and Skyrim is 0 fast travel survival, which is impossible in SF. I dragged myself to finish the game, tons of issues besides space. The game would have been better if they removed space entirely and just used warp gated to different planets. 3 detailed planets. And give us a hoverboard as a mount should be easy to code with their fossil engine. Lot of questionable decisions but they get a pass because of their fanbase.
@Ultimate65

For me the "procedural generation" ruins it, it's a copy paste every time, the moment it first sank in is when I went into some random moon base with pirates, and it had the same medical room locker with the same 2x AA-99 rifles, and like 3 combat knives, and the SAME data slate with the SAME message. And then I saw it for the 3rd and 4th time, and it just became less interesting and more "ignore all this shit, run to last room kill boss, loot his chest and fast travel out" The first time I explored those instances was great, I was slowly clearing rooms, reading everything I found ingame, but it's just too repetetive.

Yeah, this video absolutely nails it. The real satisfaction from exploring doesn't come from the scale of the terrain but what you find in the process of discovery. Starfield offers nothing in this regard because once you've seen the same extremely limited points of interest repeated a couple of times--why bother doing it again? This is basically the same playing area as Skyrim only spread out across the illusion of a star chart with procedurally generated backdrops. And it might be fun to play with those severely lowered expectations but don't confuse it with a genuine voyage into the unknown.

Each map should have a story it wants to tell. Whether it’s abandoned civilisation, nuclear war, ecological disaster, experiment gone wrong, prison planet or just geographical stories. Geographical stories for most of the planets could have been awesome. For instance, planets with thin atmosphere should have a few giant craters that yields explanation about their formation due to absence of atmosphere leading bombardment by rocks. Planets with thick heavy atmosphere, the likes of Venus, have a lot of large rock formation due to high pressure and low visibility like they did with the radiated area in Fallout 4. There’s also visible accretion disks that can make the planet interesting to look at. They need to not just have entries explaining them, but the area that you can explore should have unrealistic but notable landmark to make the planetary exploration feels more special. The best way to incorporate them into the gameplay is making planetary special features affecting gameplay more. What they have in the game is ultimately a little surface level. Just a little more artistic vision and passion would have made exploration a joy.

That was always the strength of their games For procedure generation, they were better off focusing on the space trucking side of things. Identify planet type and resources available, harvest, bring back, make money with the gameplay revolving logistics primarily and the end goal would be some giant base and a huge spaceship. They had half of the ingredient, just lack the focus. There's a game that I think Bethesda could have learn from called "Sunless Sea". It has randomised locations but same content. The game has trucking elements, quest and mission. The player is rewarded for exploration nonetheless, and they have multitude of random encounter events and a ton of stories in different location that fresh out the world. This isn’t the real problem with Starfield. This is only a “problem” if didn’t pay attention to advertising, and didn’t know what you were buying. Of course the planets you can land on are barren and boring, they’re procedurally generated off of a seed. That’s how most space games are. Starfield’s true problem lies within its stagnancy. There is no “world” plot. Every single quest line is independent to the story at large. There is no big story, there’s hardly any main quest. The main quest is just a faction quest. The world feels dead and unpopulated. There are less settlements in the game than in *skyrim.* You know, a Medieval Nordic landscape? In Starfield, there are only a few memorable (not randomly generated) settlements that the player can visit, being: Akila City, New Atlantis, Cydonia, and Neon. Im aware that there are other towns, such as Paradiso, Hopetown, New Homestead, etc, but none of these towns are explorable or have any quests even tied to them. They all have soulless, unnamed, generic NPCs that all just walk around aimlessly. They don’t have any quest lines or lore, even. “Play forever” is more than a concerning narrative that has been ever-rising in games. I will *always* take a single, crafted 1-4 hour quest line over 100 differently structured radiant quests. There is nothing more monotonous and tiresome.

Also have to wonder, if you then turn around and go back the way you came, will it be able to load the seed you came from, or would it be a whole new seed? As a solo game dev myself (as a hobby), I don't know what is or isn't possible for them with how it is coded.

Its entirely possible for it be completely seamless.....on an engine that wasnt engineered in 2008. Lol If view distance is 1km on the planet. Then the engine just needs to unload the terrain 2km and beyond behind you, and render the upcoming terrain 2km in front of you. Easy. This is how all games that avoid loading screens do it and its been common tech since like 2012. I mean even Minecraft works this way, thats why the save file for worlds slowly gets larger the more you play, because the world is rendered and created as you advance to unexplored areas.

Skyrim also was getting much hate at it's time, it become classic because of the modders... and in Starfield modders have just much more space to mod. In Skyrim it was hard to make a mod on the surface, because it conflicted with the game, so it had to be some kind of dungeon or a door but even then it could conflict with the main game. What's insane to me is that there is a mod on Nexus that removes these invisible walls, albeit the results may vary depending on the different system setups in respect to RAM capability, still it was doable for a modder, yet Bathesda took the safer side of restricting it to avoid crashing (I believe so that lower end systems wouldn't crash) yet I believe they could have taken a smarter approach in spawning/despawning tiles and making it optional for systems that were more capable A note from the modder reads: "I had an intuition as soon as the tile boundary news was leaked, and now I got around to test it, with some mixed results. This setting removes the boundaries of planetary tiles, allowing you to explore some more. Beyond the original boundaries, the game positions resource elements, flora and fauna just like it does in playable areas."

The game is really good if you’re into Bethesda games, especially Skyrim and Fallout 4. The atmosphere, the music, the overall quality and level of detail are some of the best we’ve ever seen from Bethesda Game Studio, if not the entire industry. The story is engaging (if you’re into sci-fi/aliens,) the characters are well rounded and diverse, and they give you the tools to mold your own player character into whatever you want. If you’re going into the game with the idea that there’s this huge sprawling galaxy full of life you can get endless hours out of exploring, you’re probably going to be disappointed. Randomly landing on an isolated planet and running through all the procedurally generated caves and landmarks sounds like the least enjoyable way to play tbh, it’d be like complaining about the quality of quests in Skyrim when you’re only doing radiant fetch-quests. That kind of universe exploring sim game has already been done really well in No Man’s Sky. Starfield is more about the select few locations that have tons of depth and interactivity, like New Atlantis and Neon, while the rest of the galaxy serves as more of a backdrop to the setting. Having every planet be 100% actually explorable is kind of a ridiculous request, and I think Bethesda did a pretty good job at pulling of what they did within the realms of a role-playing game. And really it all comes down to roleplaying. They give you the tools to have fun within the limits of your own imagination, and they don’t let much get in your way. I’m running a Han Solo/Starlord inspired high charisma drug smuggling captain, and I already have a second character planned out that’s an officer in New Atlantis working to support his parents. If you just play the game mindlessly following quest markers, not really investing yourself in the story or characters, burning yourself out on AI-generated content, it’s just not going to be the game for you.

'Having every planet be 100% actually explorable is kind of a ridiculous request,' For 1000 planets...maybe (if you're expecting the level of detail equivalent to hand-crafted areas). NMS achieved fully explorable planets in the millions, but the trade-off was much simpler graphics and content. Solution - don't have 1000 planets that are not fully explorable and full of repeated content. It seems like it was a fundamentally poor design decision. It's great that you are getting enjoyment from the game and maybe there is a 'better' way to approach Starfield (other reviews have said as much). If so, was it a mistake that the developers focused so much effort on creating 1000 planets as 'background'? If, indeed, it was 'effort'? It seems to me that they might have been distracted by the promises of procedural generation (and, more cynically, the sales pitch?) - had they ignored this and concentrated entirely on hand-crafted content, would the game have been better? I would be interested to hear from someone who worked on Starfield as to how much time and effort was spent on the procedural elements - getting the tech to work etc.

Just something that human touch can give to make it feel more unique than procedural generation.

Let's be real, Elden Ring crypts sucked, it was all the same. Just changing layout does nothing if it's all same assets, same enemies, same boring boss in the end with no miningful reward. Same goes for Elden Ring mines. If you play it cold headed after 3+ playthrough you realized it was only first time and the world is pretty boring after early wow effect and hype goes away. Imo team making Xenoblade series maps should be golden standard, they made vistas so beautiful you just want to stand and stare and that's in switch visual "splendor"

The crypts in Elden Ring weren’t great either. They were basically just repeated assets set up in different organized mazes. I wish they would’ve had some more unique appearances to then to build a lore to each individual crypt

They caves are hand-made. That's why they are the same. Procedural = many but different. Hand-made = few but the same.

There weren’t messages in skyrim telling you to turn around. My biggest issue is the game is boring and the AI hasn’t improved since skyrim at all.

Completely agree with Asmon. While I'm really enjoying the game; and there is a lot of game, especially if you get into all the system, crafting, base building, ship building ect, there are major flaws. One big one being the planets and how exploration is.

Care to explain what the point of base building is without any multiplayer components? Why grind for resources to build a base that nobody is ever going to see? The grind is pretty bad too from what Ive seen. It ain't like how in Skyrim you could own a house and customize it. Not really sure what the point of ship building is either when you can avoid all space interaction by simply fast traveling.

@@ancient_vampire4790 Because base building was popular in F04 and was a part of F76. In both games base building was pretty much just an added chore if you answered the distress signals or was simply for a player to make their own base for the hell of it. Basically the same in Starfield, but with even less of a reason to do so.

@@ancient_vampire4790 If you don't like base building in a Single-Player game then fair enough, but that's entirely subjective and a "issue" stemming from your personal preferences. If you don't care to interact extensively with the base building systems then I'd highly suggest picking the Dream Home trait, it is there for those that want a pre-built amazing base so they can ignore base building. As for Ship Building, the point is to build various ships designed for the many different use cases of them. Once again, it's a system that can be ignored, but despite what ignorant people have claimed there is so much content involving space and different content surrounding the utilization of your ship. If you don't want to build a ship, then there are tons of methods for getting pre-built ships, such as from missions or by stealing enemy ships.

I’m someone that loves space games. I’ve played tons of them. From space engineers and starship evo, to no man’ sky and star citizen. I have never felt this disconnect from the general consensus that I have with this game. Like it isn’t game of the year but it is exactly what I expected and is what was advertised. I don’t know what tabloid type of information people were reading but it feels so strange to compare the “ lie” allegations from the info I saw leading up to this games release. There are problems of course. Not having ground vehicles makes exploring with a low carry weight troublesome, the Ai for Ally’s isn’t great, but it is just a more commercially viable space game. Fast travel between planets and locations from your ship and being able to instantly travel from the pause menu are just there to assist casual players and the general audience.

"I don't know why everyones complaning, I really like midfield, mid city, mid space, mid combat, mid story, mid companions, mid exploration!" Actually hilarious how the combat hasn't evolved since fallout 3. It's 2023 and standards have gone up.

Agreed 100%. I have also played, or own a ton of space games. There’s also a lot of people saying having the ship is useless, but my favorite part of the game is building my ship, going to space, and (as lame as this sounds) being able to walk around in the ship and craft things and what not is just so cool. I absolutely love it. It’s essentially just a mobile base but still really cool!

I don't know why people are stuck playing it like a sandbox, there is a massive amount of quests and side quests that are really engaging, yet every one just shows random exploration. The FPS movement and gun play in the game feels surprisingly good. Yes it isn't GOTY but it is a solid 8/10...
