The Real Reason Costco Checks Your Receipts 

After listening to this I think I wasted my time...I still don’t know why receipts are checked...what a waste

I recently went to Costco with my daughter and we spent 900.00 dollars. When I got to the car I checked my bill as I always do and found they had charged me twice for 2 items totaling 46.00. I went back into store and they corrected this. So check you bill every time.

Their paper towels are excellent too and their toilet paper is better than Charmin!!

I shop at costco but the guys checking the receipt don’t really check the carts. They just glance at it and swipe the receipt. Stevie Wonder can find more discrepancy on my receipt than those guys.

I’m lost and confused. After he’s says that we may think receipt checking is to see if you paid, he goes on with a buy/don’t buy list. What the real reason then? Did I miss something?

As a person who worked at Kimberley-Clark I know a few things about tissue. Tissue is all the same: softique, Kleenex, store brand, pharmacy brand, if made by Kimberly-Clark it all has fabric softener in it and there’s no difference.

Costco does charge for tire installation. They only carry 3 brands. And they are also premium brands which means they are more expensive.

They stop really checking the receipts as soon as COVID-19 started spreading. I’ve been going a few times since and there’s no way they can count 40+ items in 2 seconds Lol

Some condiments don't need to be refrigerated once opened. Ketchup and mustard are often left in pumps at restaurants.

I don't agree with your thoughts on Costco Tire Centers. Suggest you do some price comparisons with Discount Tire who can beat Costco hands down and has a much better selection.

The real reason that your receipts are checked is so you are being charged for everything that you bring to the register's and so that you are not being double charged for those same items. Loss prevention keeps prices from having to rise, also if you grab a cold item and you decide you don't want it before you buy it and decide not to walk it back to where you got it from alert an employee so he or she can put it back, otherwise over time it can also cause prices to rise. I have learned this over the years going to Costco or regular grocery stores.

And why can't I pay cash at self checkout it's like they didn't get the damn memo.

I almost walked out without my two bags of ice. You pick it up on the way out and I forgot. The checker says oops you forgot your ice. Pretty cool.

It is to make sure that the Cashier didn't miss anything when checking out. Telling us what to buy or not to buy, that is our decision, we don't need anybody telling us.........

The real reason they check your receipt to make sure you paid and also because they look at your cart to make sure the items are accurate to the things on the list.the last reason is because so many people go to Costco and there aren’t many employees at the register so they might miss something and not scan it or charge you for the wrong items. so to make sure the people check your receipt .to make sure you that you were charged for the right items and make sure you paid the right amount and have not been overcharged or undercharged

Costco, like other large chain operations that sell bulk quantities, 3rd party purchases most of their Kirkland products. That means that you are buying name brand products with a Kirkland label. Without knowing where Costco is buying their laundry detergent from, comparing it against Tide and saying that Tide is superior is like saying Keebler cookies are superior to Kellogg cookies.

Costco Canada does not carry VitaWrap anymore, only Kirkland brand and the packaging is very poor.

Very simple why they check your receipt. They put a mark on it so that you can't go out and put the stuff in your car, then go back and get the same items and use the same receipt. Plenty of thieves out here.

Simplest, most efficient form of security in the book! It's actually a no-brainer. A marked receipt means you already left the store once with your merchandise. Why would anybody attempt to leave the store with merchandise AND a receipt that's already been marked? Hint: Don't try it! You will find yourself in more trouble than you thought possible!

The Kirkland Laundry Detergent is actually quite good. Never had an issue with it.

I know Walmart checks your receipt. I refuse, legally I don’t have to prove anything to them. Like I tell them there’s cameras all over recording I paid. It’s on their computers. They are wasting my time & if they think I’m a thief, call the police. They no longer ask me for my receipt.

The reason is because even cashiers are human. They miss items. In order to keep prices low they have to have a way to reduce loss. One way is to check receipts. If you feel so entitled that you can’t be bothered to show a receipt then don’t buy a membership.

I've had to throw out a bunch of sheets and clothes because of Tide. Been buying Kirkland laundty pods for 3 years never an issue. Covid-19 kept me away from shops. So i was forced to buy tide. Never again I can go through a 15lb sack of potatoes in 5 days.

My revenge for being charged once a year to spend my money in there shop no matter what advantages I get. I also check ingredients before I make a choice of product. Some items are pretty nasty, not just at costco...

This is the part you didn't explain "they take your receipt and either put a checkmark, dash or punch a hole in it? ". The reason, the stores are big and busy and it's not always easy for employees to see exactly where someone trying to leave came from. With three people you could easily get away with stealing a bunch of stuff. Two people load up carts with identical items. The first one goes through the line and pays. As soon as they exit they hand the receipt to the third person waiting outside who quickly goes in and passes it off to the person with the other cart. That person bypasses the registers and walks out. If stopped, they show the receipt that has all the items in their cart on it. Unless someone notices what was going on or payed close attention to the time stamp on the receipt they will assume everything is correct. Worse, the thieves could then use the receipt to return items to try and get their money back while keeping the duplicate items. But if someone marks the receipt, then it will be immediately obvious that a receipt has already been used which will bring it to the attention to the stores loss prevention who will most certainly start checking cameras to see if the second cart did indeed pay for their merchandise or not.

For me costco is not an investment it's a way to get away from the ghetto goddesses that infest wallmart and my local grocery stores. It's becoming hard to justify the 120 usd I pay in membership fees given that on most occasions the amount of time I spend in line is more than the time it takes to gather the merch I want. It's a real disappointment. It's like they know they don't have to try anymore.

I won’t be buying anything from Costco until they stop forcing me to wear a virtue signal on my face to shop there.

This video is very disappointing. The video makes no sense and when switching topics from the receipt to buy and don't buy had absolutely no transition. It even made me think that I clicked on another video accidentally. I also prefer the other narrator because the newer one sounds drowsy and doesn't give the video the spirit it needs.
