I think, it would be the best for us if it wouldn't be either. However, used in a right way could be useful to enhance our development.

The ultimate goal must be whole brain emulation. Put a human mind in a machine. Think of it like living in a video game, the world around you is virtual. You can manipulate it any way you want. Like the Matrix in admin mode, lol. Want to visit Tokyo? Think it and you're standing there. The moon? The other side of the universe? Want to create your own universe? Live forever? Create a new species? Want to be ten million people all at once, living their own separate lives, and become some type of meta-counsiousness? Want to be God? Your brain can process things at computer speeds, but still function more like a human brain. But you're restricted mostly to this virtual world in which you exist. There's the solution to the Fermi Paradox. Where is all the intelligent life in the universe? They've emulated their minds in a virtual world. They don't need to travel in space, spread out or explore. They have no need of resources, save for power to run the simulation. An entire universe with trillions of intelligent life forms could be contained in a small satellite, the size of a briefcase, orbiting a star for power. And when the star is no longer viable, pause the simulation and move the satellite to a new star, then resume as if nothing changed, even if it's a few million years later, nobody notices. Of course the down-side is some asshole will try to divide by zero and crash existence, sending the universe into a blue-screen digital ragnarok. But aside from that, it sounds pretty cool, and not implausible in the future.

Indeed, even papers I know of have never said this. The cerebral cortex keeps the brain conscious in the sense of the state awareness e.g. asleep/comatose as opposed to being awake. Whereas consciousness is what you're aware of in terms of the thoughts/feeling you experience. So it doesn't make you conscious but it harbours a large part of the consciousness, for all we know cerebral cortex is a hard drive while another part is the CPU, or the brain is holographic which implies wave-like qualities i.e. duality. We shouldn't confuse what we're aware of with the experience of, say, qualia, as an active window because what we're conscious of is always shifting yet the individual window persists even when someone recovers from a state where the brain had a point of insignificant electrical activity.

All progress incurs some risk. Guns, Phones, Cars, Planes, Nuclear Power, The Internet, Etc. What matters most is not being afraid to take the first step of many which will follow after.

@@meteorstorm415 All I can do is raise my eyebrows at that optimism. That assumes the company owning the implants doesn't collect any telemetry data or anything. If it can tell that you're looking for a way to reprogram or remove the chip, it could just make you forget the idea completely or cause pain enough that you weren't able to. Without making the chips completely decentralized, slavery is basically a guarantee, and if they were decentralized it presents the threat of infection anyway which is almost as dangerous. Open sourcing the software might help slightly, but I really, really doubt anyone, let alone the majority, will build from source, check for tampering or tighten security enough to be safe. This is why everyone uses Google and Facebook and so on, knowing full well what that means for their security and privacy. I think I'll just stick with my dumb fleshy meat computer :3

You remind me of Ray Kurzweil thinking and Caprica TV series. Only the pattern matters, not the substrate. So copying your memories, thoughts, personality to a machine would not be different from you now, in the sense that it'd be you. Yes, I think this is possible. It was recently discovered that the human neurons aren't as complicated as we thought. They are not information processors, more like simple switches. That makes it easier to copy a human brain. What would it be like? What would it be like to copy yourself and have a conversation with them, to download yourself into multiple bodies of different shapes, let them live their lives, diverge then have conversations with yourselves? By conversations I mean selective thought transfer, not with words in audio or text or bumps on a page. You'd be a multi-creature. Or you could stay as one if you chose. I'd rather like to be a man, a woman, an eagle, a whale, a crocodile 🐊. Actually a minimum of several people like, 7, and other animals too, while commanding thousands of robots like employees.

@@vincent_hall Personally I I like to imagine for simplicities sake that the conscious experiential 'soul' or intelligent consciousness of a person can be represented by a bubble of senses and information in the form of memory and experience. What if that bubble can be scanned, printed and stored in different physical mediums. Just as you said, would people choose to take a different physical biological form, personally speaking I think that would be a TON harder than digital transference to a non-biological medium. If you connect yourself to more senses the bubble extends to those senses and your experiential soul grows. However if pieces of memory storage or sensory organs/hardware are removed then the bubble is split in two. Same reasoning can be made with combination as it can division. Imagine two human minds connecting to become one single experiential entity, having access to memories, experiences and sensations no longer unique to either two parts of the whole any longer. Something that scares me however is the entropy that could potentially occur when two minds connect. Will a conscious experience be overridden by one of the participants effectively experiencing 'death'. And will the resulting conscious mind undergo trauma once the two minds cease connections. Will the exchange of information cause the brain to overload its electrical capacity and biologically short-circuit as tampering with our personal biological computers and overclocking them might result in permanent damage. However the what piques my interest most is what would it feel like to just be stagnant data. No body, no sensory organs and no organic brain systems to regulate the formation of your consciousness's information makeup. What would having only your own thoughts and nothing else feel like. Not being able to feel heat or having eyes just being an electrical signal processing through a computer. It scares me, but its something (at least a version or copy of me) would probably want to experience. A phrase which has stuck with me recently is "the soul is uniform to the physical body". I wonder what a non-biological body would feel like. And if consciousness can be supplanted over time, does that mean immortality is possible?

Thoughts and feelings are always physical. Just see someone with dementia, you lose your memory, your personality, everything unique to you with neural damage. So then what would you be preserving on a higher level when our thoughts and realisations of consciousness are all physical? As for the perception of qualia, that is still tied to "what" you're perceiving, even if the window of consciousness is broadened, people who had their brains cut in half or restored somewhat recognise that a thought only becomes an experience for only what the brain is aware of within the physical barrier of the memory limitations. You can see consciousness as a universal substance as such, but nonetheless what you are conscious of is always physical structure in the brain, a fragment of that universal substance if you will. It would appear that coherence, perhaps even on the quantum level, is important to a consistent singular experience, meaning our consciousness is wave-like and laws of physics for maintaining that wave like a seemingly singular consciousness across a larger membrane is simply unknown. If that was true, creation and creator are the same thing, just divided up, memory barriers on various levels. Things like Neuralink bridging certain aspects would potentially interfere with your unique experience if it is a localised wave, though, whereas a universal wave would just expand the consciousness in certain ways. But do you trust it? Would you sacrifice your unique consciousness if you might become a philosophical zombie?

That's assuming AI can't just feel emotions on their own, which there is absolutely no evidence for. We're learning all the time that all of our emotions can ABSOLUTELY be fully simulated on a computer. In fact, many experts think that AI could possibly feel MORE emotions than us, and the ones that we do feel even more profoundly. The brain is squishy and inefficient at what it does compared to a computer, there's no reason to currently believe that the transfer to a virtual medium would lesson the human experience in any way, and could likely improve it. And yes, I realize that you never really said anything that disputes this, I just wanted to put it out there.

This brings up the question can AI Feel? Wouldn’t it merely be emulating the emotion, and then it’s logic>emotional emulation. What if its logic states that to love something means to prevent it from suffering, and the only assured way to do that reliably is to stop it from interacting with the world, so it devises a system so that humans don’t have to interact. Or with neuralink involved imagine that it realizes that love, gives feelings of warmth and joy, and by its logic other emotions that aren’t warmth and joy are not love, but love is what it is suppose to uphold, so it now regulates the neurons in peoples head to negate and remove any feelings not associated with love. Now even at a funeral everyone is smiling because their brains no longer have any other choice. Though I agree with you that love is important, I don’t think we can approach this development without some long and hard ponderings on how this entity will interact. It’s getting a wish from a Jinn sorta conundrum, because in the end we may get exactly what we asked for. Just not in the way we were expecting.

Like a young kid who doesn't understand the concept of love or hate, only the simplistic notions of how a feeling is positive or negative. Thus is you wanted an AI to do something, it can't be told to spread love. It first like any program would need to know what that parameter is, how it is expressed, and variations of such. All AI is going to end up being is a machine learning algorithm so advanced / refined it can pass off as human or transhuman. It isn't going to be this concept like in movies where we create an infant like intelligence which has to learn everything from scratch, creates its own purpose, or any other silly sci-fi concept. If you want to understand machine learning, think of a human. We have basic programming we call instincts, with pre-programmed needs, desires, and motivations. Though once we reach a certain age / development, like a machine learning algorithm we can take information from available sources in our environment to better reach / adapt to reaching our goals / pre-programed desires.
