Growing up on the Isle of the Lost wasn't easy. Scratch that - it was pretty darn terrible! The VKs had to pick flies out of their cakes, sleep on the floor, and get emotionally tortured by their villain parents. But being imprisoned on the Isle after decades of freedom wasn't exactly easy either. Villains boiled with rage for decades before ever getting the chance to slip past the barrier. All Maleficent wanted was to bring down the barrier and get her revenge on Auradon. So when her daughter was chosen to attend Auradon Prep, Maleficent started making plans. But instead of getting the revenge she thought she deserved, Maleficent was turned into a puny lizard by her very own flesh and blood.

I actually think the reason Mal didn't undo the spell on her mom is because she can't. Fairy Godmother implied that the way to break the spell is for Maleficent to learn to love more. Perhaps like the Beast, the spell can only be broken by one especific way: learning to love. My bet is if there was a Descendants 4 it would be about Mal and Ben's kid finding his/her lizard grandma and teaching her to love again. Perhaps Maleficent will turn back to a dragon and later her fairy form, because of her love for grandchild.

Personally I think the reason Maleficent is still a lizard might be due to mal not knowing the true nature of the spell she used to turn her mom into a lizard, I mean Mal's sole concern at that moment was saving her friends and she had no clue what the spell would do resulting in her not being able to reverse it

If the spell that turned her so small is something that changes her to the size of the love in her heart, then wouldn't it meen that only by changing her heart can the spell be broken? If that's the case, then no one can break the curse for her. Only maleficent can change her heart and break the spell.

The reason she hasn't turned back because of the island is because it wasn't evil magic that turned Maleficent into a lizard. It was love(ie: GOOD). The island only negates EVIL magic. At the end of Descendants 3, the kids to back to see their mothers so it's implied that Maleficent is still on the island, and not in a box, and probably in a semi-open environment. This doesn't exclude the possibility of someone kidnapping her though.

Malificent didnt turn back to her normal self when she and mal went back to the island because EVIL nagic doesnt work there and the spell that made her turn into a into how much love she has in her heart (lizard) in the first place was by the fairy god mothers wand and that wand if filled with GOOD magic (but im not saying you can use it for bad though,just use some good spells to do bad) and since the island wont let any evil magic and evil magic only she stayed as a lizard but to be honest this information doesnt really matter since we dont even know what happened to her but yeah thats probably why she stayed as a lizzard (well lets just she did stay as a lizard)

On the Isle, evil magic doesn't work. The magic Mal used to turn her mother into a lizard was not evil, as you said. She won because she used magic from the heart. So no maleficent didn't had to turn back into a lizard

I think Maleficent didn't turn back into a lizard because only evil magic can't work at the Isle of the lost but the magic Maleficent turned into a lizard from is kind of a magic from your heart . So maybe that's why Maleficent didn't appear in D3

Maleficent wont be stuck as a lizard for ever. when she learns to love again she will become human. if she is still a lizard she is still evil and a threat. being turned to a lizard was her chance and a way of keeping everyone safe.

Maleficent wasn't turned into a lizard by magic. She was turned into that by the size of her heart not by Mal's magic. Sure they chanted a spell at her but it wasn't Mal as fairy godmother explained. Maleficent did it to herself and won't change back unless she can find her heart again and be happy with life and people and I don't see that happening.

Malificient didn't turn back when she entered the isle because the protective barrier on the isle blocks evil magic and not good which was referenced a few times throughout the 3 films. It's why Audrey age spell on Mal wore off but the the bridge could go through the shield.
