Uh I've worked on and repaired BMW cars for years without an issue. However, I think what you are ignoring is the fact that technicians don't like these cars because they are overly complicated FOR NO REASON. Explain to me why a water pump needs a computer module to control it and why the possible benefits of that outweigh the increased chance of failure. That is just an example of the questionable engineering choices BMW makes on their cars. If you like BMW that's cool but don't blatantly ignore the valid reason why so many GOOD technicians dislike BMW engineering.
@lexburen5932
@lexburen5932 2 года назад
For the simple reason that the engine has less strain on it, for maximum efficiency. and if you are a good technician, then you should have no problem fixxing a modern bmw with the proper software like ISTA +, and what technicians you are on about, if you talk about american ones then you are right, but European technicians love BMW for the simple reason that bmw have fantastic engines (exceptions be there) they drive better then any other (normal) car handling wise, more luxurious with great modern tech. BMW is for people who love to work on car themselves, its a great challenge, but once you know how everything is put together it is fairly easy car to live with, everything is well designed and thought about. if you can work on it yourself like i do, then its the best car you can have = value for money

@@lexburen5932 Fair points made by both the guy above and yourself however do these water pumps just quit without throwing a fault code? Would any mechanic with half a brain not remove the water pump after eliminating everything else and at least bench test it?
@JustinVerlander35
@JustinVerlander35 2 года назад
@@Luton-Mick they do fail with codes. You usually have turnbine speed deviation faults or open circuit faults. The reason why you don’t take it off to bench test is the amount of labor and time and it’s location to take off. It’s a waste of time and you usually have a fault code when it fails.

The vanos solenoids fault will not make an engine misfire, they will not set a misfire code And a lot of mechanics clean, change or swap intake and exhaust solenoids to see if the faults follow the solenoid. If it is shows the same fault (and there is a fault for solenoid failure, there are screen filters screwed into the head on the right side that can be removed and cleaned. You are right that it easier and cheaper for a BMW specialist to work on your car, and yes none of use know everything. I am a 45 year Jaguar specialist and the same rules apply@

Great video right on point. I'm a US tech, with over 30 years experience. When I first started as an auto mechanic back in the mid-80s, when Ford Chevy and General Motors all went to electronic fuel injection. All of the older guys in the shop would say is, get rid of that electronic fuel injection and stick a carburetor on it. Because they had no clue what to do. I 16 years old I embraced the technology, and wanted to learn as much as I could. Many years and decades later, I still like the technology and want to learn as much as possible. I have one BMW specific scan tool, to handle the basics. Then I switch over to my laptop and inpa software. Back then I only owned Ford's. Today I own three BMWs, and one Ford. I have quite a few friends and family that are BMW owners. If they have any problems they bring it to me. Most of the time it's a very easy fix that they can even do themselves. But the problem has to be diagnosed properly first. And I'm not so arrogant to think that I know it all. Actually the opposite is true. I know I do not know at all, but I still want to learn. BMWs are great cars. Just require a slightly different approach. In Failure there can be lessons, in perseverance there can be results.

Your situation reminds me of another lesson I learned years ago. I was so eager back then to learn the technology, that I disregarded checking the basics. What could appear to be a faulty sensor or loose connection, could actually be a bad spark plug. Old-school troubleshooting. Check the basics first. Air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, and so on.

The slightly different approach advice applies to all German mechanical products, they arrive at a result of an engineering problem using a different mindset and approach. The only true successful way to work on anything German is to think like a German.

@@deadprivacy Is correct. BMWs are poorly designed and dreadfully unreliable (when viewing from a daily driver perspective). This video suggests that BMWs are some how too complicated for the common independent technician to understand or fix. Ridiculous. BMWs are just like any other car (with their respective eccentricities). Instead of addressing incompetent technicians, you point the finger at technicians as a whole. The truth is mechanics hate BMW because mechanics value reliability and ease of ownership as oppose to performance. With its common failures and high cost of maintenance, mechanics see BMWs as a poor investment, especially when compared to their reliably superior Japanese counterparts.

I took my BMW E60 to a shop to change the valve cover gasket. I have the same engine as yours. I normally work on my own car, but I let the mechanics handle the valve cover because of the torque of the bolts for it. I don't want to break it. That is an easy engine to work on. Very reliable. The shop foreman was telling me how he don't like BMW's because they are problems. I told him I had this car for over 11 years never had trouble. Other cars are a lot harder to work on. I get very angry when they do that talk. These engines are very easy to work on nothing to it. I am glad they are easy to work on because BMW has always been the car of my dreams every since I was 7 years old.

I like to look at it this way: I have 3 BMW's and like them all for different reasons. All modern cars are over-complicated, both mechanically and electronically. Every car you could choose to buy will have an Achilles Heel or two. It won't be that long before all the channels and forums will be saturated with people bitching about having to shell out 5 grand for a new battery pack and 3 grand a pop for a new electric motor, so maybe time to enjoy these German engines while we can. Its a shame it takes someone who's only 23 to have to teach someone who's probably in there 50s about this car quite embarrassing I must say for you

The primary reason why many non-specialists miss the root problems on these is because on just about any other make you could care to mention, such failures are unknown, or at least extremely rare, therefore 'not on the radar'.

The reason we mechanics hate bmw is because of the chocolate rear diffs, blocked up heater cores, bent cracked wheels and ridiculous cam chain behind the flywheel skipping teeth smashing all the valves and pistons..... We hate Mercedes because of water leaks fritzing the can bus wiring plugs under the carpets, dead electric ignition switch modules and brake pipes rotten to bursting point on 6 year old cars. We hate vag because of the vile to replace unreliable egr cooler and shocks all puking oil on three year old cars, we hate range rovers because you have to take the body off to change the failed turbos, etc etc etc. I appreciate you sharing your one brand knowledge but please don't assume that all multi brand garages are idiots. With new models with new faults turning up all the time it's sink or swim. Every days a school day. The bosch service centre I work at sends me on regular courses to keep up to speed, we all know not to blindly follow what any scanner says, real world eyes open experience, proper mechanical fault finding, wiring diagrams and an oscilloscope are the key. P. S. I own an e39 540i 6speed. Made in a time before quality went out the window.

I have only worked on there diesel engines and Im not a fan of them. The V band on the turbo outlet is to narrow and the clamp is to stiff so it's a nightmare to get them on after a DPF service. Have even seen a airfilter box molded in the valve cover so you couldn't just bolt it of and get some room to work with. Just like you have to remove a engine mount to get the DPF out on a X3. That alright if you have a lift and a engine support. but I'm working in a grave. And when you see how BMW suspension parts are built you think it's a Skoda or home build british car. Especially when you compare it to a Mercedes. But in general newer cars isent as easy to work on af older cars. Everything is super compact. Just taking a inlet manifold of and replace it is a 2 day job almost.

I think the simple reason is that many people base their knowledge on simpler cars, e.g. asian cars, and dont look or think outside the box. Many mechanics will hate german cars in general because they don't understand them and wouldn't care to. I worked Ford, then Mercedes vehicles for 3 years and my expertise makes me look for problems outside the usual areas, which in turn makes me more efficient in diagnosing cars. Ford vehicles are especially troublesome to diagnose at times, and I've found many problems in areas where you wouldnt even imagine. I basically learned how to wrench with Fords and then learned to diagnose with Mercedes. I believe that has made me a good technician and I can have a very good idea of any problem with any type of vehicle and be confident that I can know for sure what the problem is.

This dude is accurate on a lot of stuff. True story most indies aint got a clue about BMWs at all. But him bashing the dealers isnt really true either. Sure thing majority of techies there are just low end maintenance ones, but any dealer has one or two high end technicians who knows their stuff. They simply have to. However, they most likely only get the job on a "repeat" visit lol so wouldnt expect a first time fix either simply due to that. Its cost ineffective for dealers to have a highly skilled crew of 10 techies costing 35-40k a year each. They just rather recruit 2 fitters at 20k each over 1 technician.
