I used to call ultra classics the old man bike when I had my Fatboy. Till my buddy let my ride his classic. I was hooked instantly. If it’s an old man bike then the old men got it right. Had to have it. Fatboy is gone and I’ve been riding my 2011 Ultra limited ever since... love it, she’s my two wheeled therapist 😎

I have a 2011 Limited. It’s honestly the best bike I’ve ever had and I came up with the metric bikes through the years. This bike is outstanding. Easy to ride in rush hour traffic, great in the scenic back roads. Fantastic on the highway. Yes it’s a bit heavy but you get used to it, you kind of want that on the highway. I highly recommend the Ultra Limited.

At 50 I started with a 2001 Low Rider, put 20000 miles on it. Sold it, got a 2003 Road King w 9000 miles on it, sold it w/ 72000 miles on it. I now own a 2009 Ultra Classic that I found last year with 3600 miles on it. Previous owner bought it, put $10,000 in upgrades and NEVER rode it. I "stole" it for $12,000 and it is my retirement ride. My last and my favorite. Like they say , why travel the country in a Chevy, when you can do a Caddy.

I have a 2010 Electra Glide Classic. Doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the Ultra, but it's super comfortable and fun to ride and handles easier than the Sportster I started with years ago. I love my Classic and since I'm 32 and I would say that it's more of a "wise man's bike" than an "old man's bike".

I’ve had 3 Ultras and have ridden them back and forth across the US several times including a trip all the way up the coast of California, Oregon and Washington state. Rode one down into Mexico for a month in 2002 and I rode an ultra through the 4 eastern provinces of Canada. They’re great bikes and I only wish I could still ride.

I agree 3rd generation rider, gave basically dad gave me his ultraclassic with all mods possible. I miss my Yamaha roadster that was modified. But I ride 100 miles a day and it's very nice. My wife loves the queen seat and putting her music on. Been all corners of Texas many times on two wheels. I get on my old man bike at 39 and I really enjoy it. I am parking my big diesel except farm work. And I'll be in uniform riding my white knight. I do my own maintenance and my bike doesn't leak but here in Houston I had verbal arguments because they won't believe normal folks do their own work. I was told at 10k I didn't do it showed all receipts... told oh your one them. Yamaha hey I need these gaskets etc... here's the factory manual.

just got a 2017 ultra, its my first Harley and my first cruiser. It only took me a few rides to get used to the feel of the weight of it, the way it shifts and the riding position. It is the most comfortable bike i have ever been on. I was expecting to be shaken to pieces from the vibration but it is actually quite smooth. I cant wait to take it on a long trip. Also the 17 is the first year they put the LED lights on them and they are really bright, makes driving at night more fun.

When I was 25, I bought my first Harley Davidson. I went to the shop and did a test drive in a 80 ci Softail. I wanted to buy a Softail Custom in Candy Brandywine Crimson which was my favorite color. The dealer said, that I‘d have to wait a complete year to get up on the list of customers that want to buy one. He offered an Electra Glide Sport in my color. As my plan was to use it for touring Europe and the Alpes, it took me one night to change my decision. I loved the bike, but despite the fact, that it was an Evo engine I had a leaking gasket at the foot of the rear cylinder within the warranty time, which was only one year and some 20.000 km on it (some 12.500 mls). I maintained it well, but sometimes also rode it hard. The chassis was just made for it. I also rode it in the winter which I do not recommend with the snow we‘ve got in Bavaria. The next year I had a highsider due to a resonance frequency the Dunlop K291T front wheel brought into the steering when I passed a longitudinal split line in the road in a steep angle. I was passing a slow car at relatively low speed (some 70 km/h - 45 mph, because I travelled with a friend that had a 1000 cc -that’s 60 ci XLH. It was the perfect speed to initiate fluttering at high frequency to the steering bouncing from one extreme to the other. I bet a lighter bike would have dropped faster. My hog just went straight. In the curbs the bike calmed down, but when I came back on the road a new pulse caused me to go over my front. I had a medic take a check of my back before I rode home with my wrecked loved one. I wore full leather gear and without a helmet I would have died on the spot. My spine was compressed, but the adrenaline helped against the pain for the 110 km or 70 miles I still had to ride home. The pain was horrible all night and almost 2 weeks after the crash. When I was cured, I carefully tried riding it again, but I had severe difficulty at all curves, no matter how huge the radius was. I do not want to say it, because I’m ashamed of it. On a bike weekend I arrived and drank a couple of beers, because I was sure I wouldn’t ride this night. Later the pack I was with planned to go for pizza and they persuaded me to join them. A highly experienced rider promised to ride behind me - all the others were ahead of me. All I had to do is follow the red taillights. Before we arrived the scavenger took over. When we arrived he excused himself for not having stayed behind - he was scared how my bike was wobbling through the curvy roads in the Spessart mountain roads. This wobbling was due to the fact, that the tube of the front fork air support was cut. I continue riding because I love it so much and I‘m lucky that none of my buddies had a more severe accident. In the time I put more miles on it the same gasket broke twice more and I fixed it myself. First with original replacement of all rear cylinder gaskets the third time with Dirko red flexible gum. That stuff I can really recommend. My most expensive defect was a torn off drive shaft. The idiots that engineered the cone fit from the secondary gear shaft to the belt sprocket was slotted to take a round-ended feather key. The 1990 and newer have a splined shaft. Gears were not compatible and so I decided just to change the broken shaft. The mechanics handbook said the torque of the central nut to be some 35 ft ibs - I cannot recall the precise value, but judging the material an Thread size I calculated it to with stand more than 350 ft ibs. I decided to compress the nonsense key inside the cone by fixing the nut with nearly 300 ft ibs. That was more than a decade ago and it still works. A tiny misfit was the rotor of the generator catching the rubber gasket of the cables leading out to the regulator and shearing off all four bolts of the stator. I was very happy to have had my little Suzuki GN250. I was a student when all these defects happened and I was not having sufficient time to immediately fix it when it was broken. When I swapped the tires from Dunlop to Metzeler it felt like another motorcycle. I gave the bike to a friend who still rides it some 15 years ago. I also love riding recumbent bicycles flevo.de/images/cm/800er/ghost_1024.jpg My favorite bike is only for nice weather rowingbike.com/en/posts/model/thys-222-revolver/ My current motorbike is a Kawasaki W650 with electric but also very good kickstart. Other than 3 batteries I had only tire front brake pad and oil changes to be done - and blowing out the air filter and its housing. Hate to say it, but these Japanese products are just good. BTW the original battery on the Suzuki was good for 12 years. The E-Glide had the original a Bosch a furukawa and again an original Harley battery which was definitely better than the others. The comfort of the ride and the joy I had with my Electra Glide makes me think of buying a Road King. I wished my wife would like to go on tour with me again. She made her drivers license, when we were together for more than a year, but she quit riding, when our kids were born now my youngest one is getting 18. She’s the only one of my four kids, that likes to motorbike ride. In Germany for beginners the drivers license is restricted to 48 hp I think a Sportster 883 could be a good fit for her. Don’t drink and drive. God bless you all!

I now own an Ultra Limited from 2011. Definitely a lot heavier, than my 1989 Electra Glide Sport 413 kg vs 325 kg. It is a full dresser, but I had to add a passenger hand rails for easier pushing. On the E-Glide sport, it was at no extra cost.

Bought my Ultra so my wife could ride comfortably. She used to ride her own but health issues stopped that. She has since died and I traded my Ultra for a Street Glide. I've had the Dyna Wide Glide and Heritage(heritage was my fav) but, I really like the looks of the StreetGlide. I loved the Ultra, just a complete bike and I could turn almost as efficiently as a cop on their scoots. But, my legs and my strength are not what it once was(I'm 68) and that freakin Ultra is top heavy as hell. Don't say it isn't, it is. So, the change to the Street is just a heck of a lot easier to handle at stops and slow speed. Ultra is an awesome bike, just not for me any longer.

The older Harleys had automatic chain oilers. So oil would drip off the chain and a lot of people though they leaked oil, this is also one of the reasons that in the old days dealers put drip pans under the bike. I had a 1972 AMF bagger with the chain oiler but it never leaked oil from the engine. That was a great bike never had any real problems with it. Sold it to my friends wife so I could buy an o3 lowrider.

In my 20's my first Harley was a used1994 Electra Glide Touring Classic. I loved that bike but caught grief from younger people that it was an old man's bike. The dealer got a 94 Heritage Softail Classic and I traded for that bike, which I really liked but it didn't ride like that FLH. Last year I finally rectified that situation and bought a holdover 2017 Ultra Classic. OK, I'm 53 now, edging toward true old man status, and I love my FLHTCU. Its good to be home again.

Nice video. From 2009 onward the updates make a big difference in handling. The one Achilles heel are the compensator failures - especially on the 96” engines. We had to replace the comp at 20K when it stranded me. I knew it was going bad - banging on hot starts when you hit the button is a huge clue and it’s loud. Go with the Baker compensator and avoid the HD SE comps as they are no better. Your bad comp May lunch the starter clutch too! Ours ate it up. Our 2009 Ultra Classic is blue it’s a great two up machine.

You can ALWAYS divide highway miles by 2 and even at that, i know of MANY that, like Sean tells you about an excellent maintenance schedule being used, they use a mirometer to measure wear , and can take the stock size rings again when doing an overhaul of the motor. If you dont believe the micrometer, use plastiguage to measure the wear on other critical parts. Those of you who know this, have always turned out a great overhaul that youre never afraid to put a warrenty on.

My 70 Electra Glide had an automatic drive chain oiler that could be turned off by basically turning a bolt. After that it no longer marked its spot. Some of the older ones needed some silicone added to a few gaskets as Harley machining tolerances weren't as exact back before the mid 80s. Nothing sounds like a shovel head with drag pipes.

At Harley's demo day, last fall, I was told the newer M8s are all balanced now and when they did the first test rides on the development bikes, they consistently heard it was TOO smooth and that it took away from the feel of the bike. So, they put a little shake back in. Just goes to show how much we all love that feeling. The key is finding that perfect balance so it feels visceral but isn't obnoxious, like those old 88s.

My 1970 Electra Glide didn't leak a drop once I turned off the automatic chain oiler. Just had to basically turn a bolt. Then it no longer marked its spot. Yeah you better put a wrench here and there on any engine with solid motor mounts, every now and then. My 06 Ultra doesn't leak either, ever. I guess I was an old man at 19 when I bought the 70 full dresser, white seat, bags, rails, extra lights and all. Nice video!

Nice ride i still like full exhaust on my local bike but my slip ons on the RKS works much better for tour duty that loud tone on a 400 mile a day tour run will wear on you quick

I want one of the 70s because of the material quality. They feel heavy. Oil leaks in old models is true and the shift sound from neutral to 1st is a classic.

Couple things from a seasoned electra glider owner. I knew which grips you were talking about when you said you hated then i wasnt looking at the screen i looked and it was the grips i thought. Those are so uncomfortable. The highway pegs are a must for comfort. I never knew they had a CB radio option did i hear that rite? Mine has 59k miles and has been across country. Stock engine and hasnt been rebuilt yet. No issues. Loud pipes save lives & your channel is awesome

In the 70s Harley had a line that came from the external oil pump that oiled the rear chain-you could adjust how much the pump put out with a screw on the pump-the manual said a drop every 3 minutes-it was engine oil too !

Get a sport touring bike. S1000xr, low 10 quarter mile, bags, cruise, heated grips and seat, abs/trac, navigation.. you can also get used concourses, fjr's, st's for a fair price if you don't have lots to spend. I used to have a cruiser and a sport bike, now I pretty much only ride the sport touring bimmer.

I was in High School 1962-1964 or there abouts. There was a song referencing an Electra Glide in Blue. It drove me(no pun intended) too draw right and left views and color (in blue) Electra's right down to the kick stand on all my paper shopping bag book covers. I've always wanted one but fate is a game changer. Do any of you old timers know who or the group was that sang it? I thought it was Dylan or Donavon, Google says no. I'm going crazy.

these are really nice bikes, my step father has one, his only complaint is the seat padding on long rides, my complaints are the seat padding and the style of the saddlebags. his is a low tho so the seat high is amazing and he has the double din radio which is nice for the GPS and its all around nicer. this bike is still worth a solid look tho, no doubt.

When you mention old Harley days with oil pans when parking them. There were chain lubricators installed, which caused the dripping. Also true, that my ‘89 Electra Glide Sport had issues with a blown cylinder foot gasket on the left side. Once fixed in warranty time, once by myself in the 70.000 miles I rode it and later the friend I gave it fixed the issue with red Dirko flex. sealing silicone.

Would it be a good idea to buy a Harley Softail for cheap but it’s carbureted ( hard start on cold mornings, ethanol will screw up carb, have to buy expensive non ethanol fuel, have to adjust every so often )? Wondering if it’d be buying a headache.

@@ladariusholmes1215 good move man. I had a dyna wide glide I thought was pretty comfortable until I rode it all day lol. I was so miserable I didn't think I was going to make it home.
