The Real Reason SNL Had No Choice But To Fire Adam Sandler

Saturday Night Live has been a staple in comedy for over 40 years. With a long list of heavy hitters that have come through the doors of Studio H at 30 Rock, SNL has maintained a level of success never seen in another sketch comedy show. Though one of it's most successful alumni, Adam Sandler, was fired after just a few short years on the show. Leaving SNL behind, Adam Sandler became one of the biggest movie stars on the planet. But how did Sandler make all this possible?

David Spade had great comedies like Black Sheep, Joe Dirt, and Tommy Boy. Chris Rock has had several TV series, a long successful stand up career, even did some decent documentaries, and most of his movies have had little to nothing to do with Sandler until recently. Salma Hayak had a long successful career before Sandler as well and acted in several Mexican movies and shows, then showed up in Dusk to Dawn, Wild Wild West, and Dogma. They all appeared in shit but they all have talent, their biggest problem is that they appear in shit because its financially successful. Some of them like Kevin James and Sandlet himself COULD be award winning actors, they have some dramatic chops, they just rarely put in the effort since it doesnt make them as much money, it's hard, and it's not nearly as fun but I cant really blame them. If you could get paid a fortune to go on vacation. With your family and fiends or bust your ass for less money at a less interesting job which would you do?

I feel like Sandler's impact on this generation is sometimes underrated. He was surely in some bad (understatement) movies, but he was also in a lot of straight CLASSICS, and I don't just mean the Punch-Drunk Love's and Uncut Gems of the world. He's one of the key actors of the past few decades and I like that he's been getting more recognition for this over the past few years.

He hosted SNL semi recently and did a fantastic job. On Howard Stern, Sandler basically said he wasn't rehired, but said he wasn't salty towards SNL at all years later b/c of all SNL did for him. I wouldn't say he was fired, more so he just wasn't rehired for further seasons. At the end of the day, Sandler and SNL clearly still have a great relationship and Sandler has done well. Basically the culture and times changed, and so did the cast. At the end of the day, it was a happy ending for both parties, but I personally don't find SNL that entertaining anymore and Sandler's movies are hit or miss, but he is a super nice guy, that is for sure.

Correction to your assertion about Sandler being second to RDJ in box office earnings. Eddie Murphy’s movies have made over $7 billion, worldwide. Sandler sits at about $5.5 billion. Adam Sandler once said that his dad wouldn't watch him on TV or go see his movies because he couldn't believe that his son got paid so much money for just acting like an idiot. He wasn't being mean, he just didn't think that it was a real job. I applaud the man for laying on the Jewish guilt trip so thick, that even his world-famous, wealthy comedian/actor child was held to impossibly high standards. I liked him in The Wedding Singer. He really plays some heartwarming roles that have the kind of guileless honesty of children. I think that's one of the things that appeals to so many people about his characters. They aren't mean or cruel or mocking, they are without the duplicity that often comes with adulthood.

Imagine having Dana Carvey, Mike Myers, David Spade, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Jay Mohr and Tim Meadows among others on your show and thinking it'd be a good idea to change the cast HAHA. I didn't find the last two listed that funny but they always made good supporting characters.

So we can thank SNL for blessing us with Adam Sandler on the big screen? One of the greatest comedy actors of his time.

Also anyone who has seen the Sandman's Netflix special, 100% Fresh knows how talented this man is. Really a perfect comedy special start to finish, easily one of my top 5 comedy specials of all time

7:35 - Saturday Night Live granted Sandler enough recognition for someone to take a chance on him by greenlighting Billy Madison "Now you're all in big big trouble" Give that editor a medal.

Sounds like Dennis Miller didn't want the network to look too closely at the SNL cast, in case they made other choices.

I’m actually surprised that Sandler fail to notice that almost all of his companions were dismissed en mass quite suddenly, and that he didn’t consider that he’d suffer the same fate.

How did you forget Eddie Murphy when talking about highest grossing SNL actors? His numbers eclipse Sandler’s.

I think it made sense for Sandler to continue with movies. Billy Madison was actually made and released before his firing anyway.

His best role...the one that means the world to me was in Reign over me so powerful... don't watch if you don't need to dump your emotional saddness.

90's Sandler was the best, I loved most of his movies, I loved his work on SNL and it wasn't the same when he left (along with Myers, and Farley - and whoever else). I'd say 90-94 were my favorite SNL years and I'll never forget them. The good ol'days that'll never come back...
