The Real Reason These Sci-Fi Movies Never Got Sequels

To state the obvious, movies are expensive to make. So Hollywood rarely takes chances on projects that aren't essentially a sure thing. That explains why sequels to already-successful movies are so common, particularly when it comes to the sci-fi genre. A lot of the marketing heavy lifting has already been done by the previous movies, and fans can rely on seeing their favorite characters return.
But not all sequels are a guaranteed success, and some just plain aren't happening. Maybe the last franchise entry turned out to be a flop, rights issues gummed up production, cast members moved on, or a script just never came together. Here are the real reasons these sci-fi movies never got sequels.

Despite the numerous changes they made to the story, I'm in that same boat. To be honest John Carter of Mars needs to be a tv series...the serial format of the original writings lends well to this, a movie series just doesn't make as much sense.

Totally agreed about the excellent John Carter. Disney messed up the marketing there. I quite enjoyed Star Trek Nemesis, but still sympathised with a recent vid which rated it worst of all the Star Trek films, at least partly due to the unjustified (from a plot POV) sickening mind rape of Troi; plus the abrupt despatch of Data, though at least it effectively set up Star Trek Picard to give him the send off he deserved.

It was a decent movie, but to me it's greatest flaw was that didn't have anything distinguishing it from other scifi movies. It felt generic, which shouldn't be that surprising, because many of Burroughs original ideas have been copied and improved upon since his books were published. They should have made it at least a decade earlier for it to have a chance.

Might work a bit better if they forgot the idea of a traumatized hero and went more for something like the first Indiana Jones movie's tone: a very self-confident adventurer ends up on a strange planet and jumps into the adventure with enthusiasm, and apart from a few occasions when he is worried about his love interest or his chances with her mostly seems to be enjoying himself. Which would be somewhat closer to the tone of the novels. This Princess of Mars adaptation is a pretty good movie when viewed by itself, but I don't like it as an adaptation. There is a definite tonal difference with the depressed reluctant hero and runaway bride princess and so on from the novels. Besides most of the other characters are very different from the ones in the book too... like Tars Tarkas, who is an impressive and pretty scary warrior who doesn't need Carter's help at all when it comes to killing his personal enemies among the Tharks. Compare that to the rather friendly from the beginning TT who needs to be saved by him in the movie. A really good adventure story seems to be a surprisingly hard thing to get just right as a movie. But yep, when they do work you do have a very lucrative cash machine, and a really fun first movie can carry a pretty long-lived franchise even when none of the other movies in the series ever manage to get all the way there.
@frost2104ify
@frost2104ify 3 года назад
@@pohjanakka4992 A second movie could have been great if they follow the book. In the book when he gets back from Mars he doesn't even know where he's at. He then comes across another species that he knows nothing about kind of like giant black creatures. He has to find his way back and finds out he has a son.

The Time Machine (1960) was supposed to have a sequel in which George and Weena barrel back to the 20th century because Weena is about to deliver a baby but is undergoing complications. George crashes the time machine sometime during World War II right in front of Filby. Weena has the baby, George and Weena die, and Filby raises the baby. The baby grows up, rebuilds the time machine, and goes off on his own adventures. The sequel was turned into a novelization called Time Machine II around 1980 under George Pal's byline. It includes a far-future sequence that was planned but never filmed for the original. The ending is pretty interesting.

RIP John Candy: it still hurts to lose you. Okay, A Princess of Mars is NOT a forgotten novel. Those novels have a cult following. The series gets a bit repetitious towards the end and the Venus spinoff series even more so but the first few books are some of the best stuff Rice Bubbles ever wrote (I tried to read the Tarzan series but they haven't aged well by comparison). To me the thing I didn't like about the movie was the intrusive CGI. I wish Ray Harryhausen or Gerry Anderson had made it with physical models but then I wish that about a lot of modern movies. When Last Starfighter came out I was excited for the future of special effects but it's like sci-fi itself: the future isn't what we thought it would be.

Terminator Dark Fate killed off John Conner.... what the hell made them think THAT was a good idea (don't answer, I already know)?? I can't see any fans of the original movies bothering to see anything after that.
@shdwlrk
@shdwlrk 3 года назад
From a somewhat logical standpoint, John Conner's existence was a tad problematic. His father was from the future and was killed when he went to the past. If you get killed when go back to the past, do you exist in the future? So, did John's father ever exist?

John carter was screwed by the marketing people, Disney were in the middle of purchasing a little known franchise called Star wars when it came out so they didn't put any effort into promoting it, it felt like they were using it as a backup plan if the deal had fallen through

John Carter was a good film, just they let the production cost get out of control on movies these days. Valarien Was also good but cost to much so the profit was not high. Then again, scifi does not seem to be doing well since the super hero movies started and those things are now showing their ware and tear.

I don't know why y'all keep referring to the terminator as cyborg.....the terminator in NOT a cyborg, it's an android....that's 2 different entity. A cyborg is a human who has cybernetic upgrades....while an android is entirely a machine that looks like a human... Cyborgs...human with machine upgrades....Androids....100% robot with human like appearance....
@adamwatts6757
@adamwatts6757 3 года назад
It gets blurry because the original terminator was a combination or organic and inorganic material. There was real, living flesh over the metal skeleton. That flesh is not "robot" per se. Of course, for the original movie, that was required. Reese couldn't bring weapons because you couldn't send metal unless in was encased in bio material. Which creates a conflict with how then managed to send the other models in later movies. Liquid metal and whatever is still metal. That was a pretty big plot-hole.
