@@JamesRichardWiley There is a lot of history not contained within the Bible. It's part of the broader study of it. I think what you are missing is that they are including historical facts and events to reconstruct a story. While the Bible may be all you need it doesn't mean it's all there is.

Have you noticed the trend of Jesus's disciples? If you haven't I'll tell you...they are all flawed, they are all broken, and they are all ragamuffins just like we are. They aren't perfect individuals who have loads of gold and a great wonderful life. I for one am a ragamuffin through and through.

Not sure if I’ve ever been called a ragamuffin, but the word knucklehead rings a bell!! I really enjoy how all of the characterizations reveal the humanity of not only the disciples, but all those who are portrayed. Sometimes I need visual stimuli to enhance my studies, and to bring a new perspective when I read scripture. It just helps it all become more real when I can see what I have been imagining while I read the scriptures! It’s hard to articulate; like I said, a knucklehead! Blessings!!

Forgive an old lady for interfering but your insights are so valuable. Years ago our pastor in San Salvador was invited to the American Women’s Group to speak. Most of the ladies were wealthy Latin American women married to wealthy U.S. citizens from the embassy or AID. Pastor Dave Gruber spoke about the bad girls of the Bible and I later read a novel by Francine Rivers about them, too. The habit of choosing flawed people and converting them into heroes or heroines goes way back in to the Old Testament. Did you ever read about Rahab? She was a prostitute in Jericho. Do you know she is listed in the genealogy of Jesus?

Thanks for recognizing those who are prosecuted for believing in Christ . Especially those in Afghanistan who are scared right now.! I’m in America and a Veteran but I could only wonder the pain for those in other countries threatened for their belief. God bless them and see them and hope they are given strength. I firmly believe that the severity and inhumanity of the Taliban has led so many in Afghanistan to accept the faith of young Christians who were served by them and also served them. We may be surprised to see so many Afghanis in heaven.

Another great song is “Be Thou My Vision” sung by Steph Macleod and his group. I can’t remember the song at the end of the movie, “On Wings Like Eagles” which is also so lovely as Eric Liddell supposedly picks out the tune when he is very very sick and in a prison, a concentration camp.

Thank you for this session - learnt a lot of history and application to our spiritual life. 18:21 was my heartfelt moment - the smile on Thaddeus' face when Jesus commended them for asking him to teach them to pray. Thaddeus had in S2/E2 or 3 alluded to Matthew that previously he didn't like to pray, but when Rabbi Jesus taught him how to pray, he now likes praying. It's my prayer too that I may delight in prayer, in communion with Jesus, so as to intentionally make time and place for prayer everyday.

Prayer is telling the Hebrew god Yahweh how much you love him and then asking for favors. Yahweh is a monster who kills innocent people and does nothing to end human and animal suffering. Jesus prays to him and worships him.

The Lord's Prayer also Follows themes that are in the Traditional Amidah (18 prayers) of a Jewish prayer service at the time. Avot (Fathers), God's Might, God's Holiness, Wisdom, Repentance, God's Provision, Establish your Righteousness, Thanksgiving, etc.

I discovered your commentaries some months ago and I really enjoy how you weave together understanding by showing how the Old Testament is quoted or even further illuminated in the New, also the context and history together with sharing being a Christian now. I almost never write a comment but I am intrigued by the books in the background - is that Jesus through Middle Eastern Eyes by Kenneth Bailey and -very unlikely -but I wonder if you have a copy of The Word on Fire edition of the Gospels too, Thank you for being brave enough to do this work on the internet - thank you for highlighting that Christians are persecuted around the world today. Glad to see you have grown so much since the 8.5k since I joined!

We need to help bring the kingdom here to earth….so in talking to the Father He hears what to do. The apostles can pray that prayer but then they must listen to hear the voice of God telling them what is next! So follow Jesus in praying the prayer and like Him listen to the Father sharing His will. Oh yes! Love this!

When you spoke about Andrew broke me... I noticed thr switch Simon was the more anxious of the pair and the switch around where Simon is calm and Andrew is anxious i noticed. I resonate with what you said about Andrew loving jesus, having loved and lost John. I didn't know that jesus was arrested twice? I am still learning. This is one of the reasons that we has a Nation can’t give up our rights to Bare Arms. The current Tyrannical government is only fearful of the population because we are Armed. Look at what’s happening to Australia. Would they be able to do that to the Australian citizens if they were all armed? I know this isn’t the net affect of the video but still wanted to float that out there. Edit: The Prayer at the end made me feel a bit guilty about the above. “Thy will be done” God is control and not me with any defense I can muster up. He is our sustainer!! Powerful Brother Powerful Video!!!

The Book of Ecclesiastes (sp?) tells us that there is a time for everything...living, dying, rejoicing, mourning, etc. There is also a time for obeying a ruler and for fighting against a ruler. And when the time for fighting arrives, everything usually falls neatly together so there's no question of "What shall we do?!" Or "Is the Lord with us?" But keep in mind that we HAVE BEEN SHOWN an example of ALLOWING Evil to control a situation when it is for the Glory of God! When Jesus was arrested and Peter cut off the ear of one of the Roman servants, Jesus rebuked the violence and restored the servant's ear. By ALLOWING Evil to have its way, Salvation became available to anyone believing on the Lord Jesus, repenting of their sins, and following Him instead of their own sinful desires! It is important that we pray and listen closely to what the Lord is saying to us, especially now as we live in the last minutes of the End Days. Because, bottom line, our Father in Heaven is in control of what's going on in this world and we will not be allowed to change what has already been allowed by God. Remember, the Book of Revelation tells us that Evil will dominate our world but only for a short time. And after that, our Lord will return in GLORY, with EVERY KNEE BOWING BEFORE HIM! Selah!

Hi Brandon you make me tear up with your explanations and teachings of Jesus. I feel exactly the same way when I read parts of the New Testament Scriptures that teach me the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ to His disciples. Inasmuch as it has been difficult being a follower of Christ, I still stumble and fall but always try to find the path to righteousness. Thank you so much and may God continue blessing you. Amen.

So many have no true understanding of how much running and hiding came into the disciplines lives. It was a life of beauty, but of fear as well. To grow up oppressed, in fear , and with your eyes to the ground. Then to literally know your poking the bear, so to speak. To know what happens to people who do this beforehand, wow the fear! Then the courage when they are blessed with the spirit later! Each a miracle in its own right. The courage of these men and women even before they were touched by the holy spirit, the hearts of these people, for all their issues and problems, for all their faults, their hearts belonged to Jesus truly. Did they make mistakes, did fear consume them at times, sure can you imagine! Yet they came back, always, and then when they were baptized with the holy spirit to turn their already strong resolve to steel and iron, and knowing how they were before that moment, and who they were afterwards..........
