In this video I go over hair growth tips for growing long hair, my hair regimen for long, healthy hair, and how to reduce breakage. I talk about how to actually do protective styles properly to allow for growth. Protective styling is one of those things that is really amazing when it is done correctly, but can be tragic if done wrong. You can have protective styles without loosing your edges, experiencing a lot of breakage, or any other things that can commonly be associated with protective styling. In this video I go over hair growth tips for natural hair and relaxed hair. Everything I discuss here can be applied to both. My hair regimen for natural hair growth is very simple. I do a lot of protective styling! What is different though is that I do it without experiencing a lot of breakage. I give hair tips for growing long natural hair and relaxed hair. I go over my hair growth journey and exactly what I did to learn how to grow hair past the shoulder length plateau. I show you how to grow long healthy natural hair and long healthy relaxed hair. While there is really not much you can do to grow your natural hair faster, what you can do is learn how to reduce breakage of natural hair or relaxed hair and how to retain more length

I agree with this completely. I lived in South America for almost 3 yrs, literally in the jungle. So I kept my hair braided up, just my own hair bcz no access to weave. anyway, when I straightened it for the first time years later, it was almost too my waist😩. Also I drank like a gallon of water a day and only ate natural food. No fast food, no processed food, again bcz there was no access to it lol.

This is the video that enabled me to realise my hair length has nothing to do with me being black (my race of tribe). I'm coming back here 1.5 years later to say thank you for helping me understand hair science and how my hair grows. Thanks so much. I do my hair all natural. I've been able to retain 3.5-4 inches and my hair is longer, healthier and makes me more confident. I was almost giving up on my hair. For anyone who still finds it hard to believe that black women can have long hair, think of a black friend who has dread locks (we at least know one). Then think about how their hair wasn't really growing before the locks but suddenly started growing after the locks. That's enough proof that black people can grow long hair. Thanks so much SEUN 🌻😍

This is it! And all black women need to hear it. There's a myth that natural 4c hair can't grow in the black community - but the secret to growth really is that simple. Moisturize, oil, and wash your hair just as normal, even with protective styles in. Otherwise LEAVE IT ALONE.

I comb my one ur olds hair once weekly no exceptions my sister says it’s a shame because I’m a cosmetologist n my baby shouldn’t be waking around like that. Her hair is now flourishing. Low manipulation reallllly grows hair. I put it in box braids now that it’s long enough and they say she looks like ms celie but j could care less. Oan of course I don’t add hair to her natural boxed braids. Try this in your little ones and keep the plaits moisturized n watch it grow...

@@x0xTHLover4Lifex0x I believe you. Relaxed hair just needs to be taken care of. It only damages the hair if one let's it damage it. I slap my perm on in under 20 minutes and wash it right off. I also protect my ends from relaxer run off. I do my own hair now and it's thicker and healthier than when I was going to a salon

1. Low manipulation/ not too much tension in protective styles 2. It's ok to leave it in for 3 months 3. Detangle hair WET when taking down your protective styles. Be gentle. 4. Moisturise your hair in a protective style. You don't have to do it everyday. Maybe a spray bottle and some oil on scalp.

One thing I learned about removing weave: use brown thread if your hair is black. That way you never cut hair, only thread.

It's sad that black hairstylists don't know how to work with black hair without damaging it. If you want healthy hair, you have to do it yourself. Other races can go to salons without issue but it's a whole thing when it comes to black women.

You need to have your hair straightened otherwise they don’t know how to do it and when you don’t they want to change you crazy amount of money. You are so right! The stylist that I used to go to would take my hair down and comb it directly after with a SMALL tooth comb. She would rake it while blow drying...when I would say something I would be told...it's okay, it won't damage your hair...🤔

I’m glad I found this video. My family does my hair and to put it short: they basically believe pain means it will last longer. I hated weaves because they irritate my scalp but nothing else lasts in my hair. Now that I have control over my hair and left it alone besides a good washing since it get very dry and is dandruff prone, my hair has done very well.

Imagine if our parents had this energy. I really believe that a lot of the issues some black women face when it comes to length retention and hair maintenance, comes from the lack of knowledge our parents had. It’s like, the hair is tough so you gotta be tough with it. When in actuality our hair needs extra care and tact in order for it to flourish to its fullest potential. I really would love to leave my future children’s hair alone but there’s this irrational need for our of children’s hair to always look super neat all of the time. I think it’s because there’s this idea that you represent your parents in a good light when your hair is constantly fresh, laid and put together. As an adult you can throw a wig on top of your indistinguishable cornrows and call it a day, but as a child you obviously can’t do that. 🤷🏿‍♀️

So funny you said this.. I recently said the exact same thing to my one of my friends. That is literally how the stereotype about black people having a hard time growing long hair started. Lots of us just didn’t have the knowledge of how to care for our hair. I still see it, especially amongst older generations of black women. I had a woman in my job tell me a few weeks ago that she combs her hair DRY🤦🏾‍♀️ and had the nerve to try to explain to me why it is better for natural hair.... meanwhile her hair touches her ears and she’s 20 years my senior....

That’s why I don’t let my mom or grandma touch my hair even though they can do hair really good . They think u have to snatch and yank on kinky hair because the belief that it’s too tough , rough, and difficult to deal with . That’s why I tell bw to stop saying their hair is difficult and requires a lot because it doesn’t and they’re just saying their hair is difficult unlike others which is also not true .

Girllllll I don’t do my two girls hair every time. The way I do my girls hair mostly is a 3 column section and put 5 ruberbands parts in the middle section so that last a month. I re touch the front and back everything week and half or two.

My mom always had my natural hair braided without using heat i would go like two months inbetween wash days sometimes 😬 lol it wasnt stinky or anything but now that I do my own hair it gets washed like every 2 weeks but anyway bc i hardly used heat and my mom always kept it moisturized and did not detangle regularly and when she did detangle she used lots of moisture and took her time oh also i never used weave in my braids just my own hair

@nunya beezness breakage is when the hair that is falling out is not your hair's length. It is generally shorter. Shedding is when your hair falls out from your scalp, so it is generally longer. you can also see a little bulb on shed hair because it was attached to the scalp. Savvy?

Just took out knotless braids it literally took me hours because after every braid I detangled my hair and it was the least amount of hair I ever had come out. Slow and steady was the key for me.

product and habit is definitely a thing though! once I stopped using straighteners I used unrefined almond oil everyday and it strengthened my hair to prevent breakage !

So glad I finally watched this. I took my hair down for the first time since around October. I was very gentle I washed, moisturized and braided. I'm going to do this 4 times this year. Once every 3 months oiling scalp with jamaican castor oil 1-2 times weekly. I'd like bra strap length by years end.

Any kind of braided hairstyles. braided into a ponytail, her hair is in box braids now, braided with beads it’s a lot of protective styles really just have to go look at different styles for ideas I have the Pinterest app it’s an app for almost anything you can think to type in but as far as hair, you can type in braid styles for little black girls and a bunch of pics will pop up and that should help you get an idea of styles for your little ones 💕

Y. E. That’s why it’s braided so u won’t have to do anything to it. Maybe spray some oil sheen in it to moisturize, I use the yellow bottle of Rasta Jamaican Mango and Lime No More Itch Gro Spray for our hair but as long as it’s braided just leave it be. Just like she said in the video too much manipulation to the scalp is not good so just braid it a nice size not too big so it’ll last and just leave it.

Because of this video I am now in my 6 month of protective styling and my hair and scalp problems have all but disappeared. Now I'm upping the ante and doing things like trying to be more mindful of bad habits such as touching my hair throughout the day as this depletes the oil. True..when we were younger, we hardly wore our hair out, especially to school. You always got your hair cornrowed or threaded, weekly or every 2 weeks.. That helped our hair grow, and prevent breakage especially the threading aka Kiko. I grew up in Nigeria btw For taking out old braids, I always moisturize the tangled roots with water and detangle gently, it helps prevent so much breakage. I never take out my braids in a salon, they don't have the patience.

Durning the take down of braids and twist, I use cholesterol conditioner to detangle. Let it sit with a bag for an hour or so, then shampoo and use a leave in conditioner.

The fact that I came across your channel and this video and spent all afternoon tendering to my 4c hair today.. took over an hour to take down my 3months cornrows last night.. todays afternoon was spent, detangling, and all that jazz.. THE WHOLE AFTERNOON.. my hair grew so much that it surprised me, almost 14inches now… You are so right about being patient and being gentle when taking down protective style.. A BIG REASON WHY I DO THIS PART MY SELF.. A lot of hair saloons are not patient enough and be that gentle, always leave me hurting and with a lot of breakage. I do it myself and no hurting.. I’m going to keep it up this year and care better for length retention. Have been doing the barest minimum up till now… Cool and helpful content♥️

This is how I grow my hair! People would look at me in disgust when I would say I keep my hair in for 3months.. A past long term hair stylist taught me this (Annointed Too, Tallahassee, FL). After she treated my hair, I would get sew in & she would have me to go between my braids with Wild Growth Oil or Wild Growth oil mixed with Minoval. My hair would grow long down my back... everyone walking out her salon had BEAUTIFUL long hair! Her hands were definitely Annointed😇

This is very informative and detailed. I remember one time I did do my own hair(braided it myself and then put a wig over it for a couple of months) and my hair grew so much. My hair is fine and super soft, and some of the women in my family have long hair.. so it has always made me wonder about my own and made me wonder how long mine could possibly get over time. I will definitely be paying more attention to my hair when I do it myself and get it done now that I’ve watched this video. 😊

I just put something on them to smooth them and tie them down. You should not have too many fly hairs in the box braids anyway because they may become split ends. If too much of your ends are hanging out they are not being protected by the box braids

@taneah kelley they should not be cutting your hair at all. A good braider should be tucking the natural hair under the braid hair. That's how you keep the style neat and have longevity. The ends where the braid get smaller up to a couple inches above should be the areas getting trimmed. Trust those short spiky pieces will poke you and become irritating over time. No amount of product will hold it down either. Again they definitely should be cutting your natural hair though

As a black stylists we know how to do hair without damage, ya’ll just going to the wrong ones. you have to find the ones who genuinely love and care about their jobs rather the ones who care about the money. But yes, that’s accurate leave your hair alone. Get your ends clipped, split ends will split all the way up your hair shaft and break halfway through. keep it moisturized , dryness can cause your ends to break as well. Remember , dont get discouraged if your hair is falling out after a protective style. your hair naturally sheds off but when its in protective style the hair has nowhere to go. so when you take your styles out, hair falling out is normal. its just when it’s excessive that you should worry. your hair shouldn’t be breaking off halfway up your hair shafts. Take care of your ends, do your conditioning treatments (and protein if you use heat or color hair), moisturize, and silk bonnets/pillow sheets are the way to go! Also dont sleep on sulfer 8, that stuff works miracles.

No, it does matter that you trim your ends. When you leave your ends split , it will split all the way up the hair until it breaks. to prevent that, you get them clipped. Its best to clip your ends atleast once every 2-3 months. it also depends on your hair. if your ends look thin , cut them off. if your hair looks healthy but you still have a few split ends, its okay to keep them for a while but you definitely want to keep them conditioned and moisturized.

fancy tam Yes, sulfur 8 helps with itchy scalp. I originally started using it for that but i noticed a lot of hair growth along with it. I always told people Quick weaves grew my hair but i stopped using sulfur 8 and my hair stopped growing. I recently started using it again and i noticed my hair is growing back ALOT again. Ive gotten alot of family to use it and they have noticed a difference as well.

Jess Cruz If you leave it out, water should be your bestfriend. Get spray bottles, mix oils, leave in conditioners, and water together and you can use that as a daily moisturizer. Just when you use it make sure to follow up with a cream moisturizer as well. Keep it styled too. If you like braids, sew-ins, crochet and different types of twists try them! You can always look on pinterest for style inspo. I have 4c but i color it. My hair has been dry from the bleach so ive been using a lot of water. Cantu is my bestfriend. Cantu is water based so it works for dry brittle hair best. In the past i hater cantu because it never worked for my hair but my hair wasnt dry back then and now that its need to be hydrated all the time cantu is perfect. Its all about finding products that fit your hairs needs.

I’ve been cornrowing my own hair for about two years now and wearing glueless wigs. I’d bond it down for only special events. My hair grew like weeds. I just had to wash and deep condition every 3-4 weeks and moisturize gently with Jamaican black castor oil (my holy grail). My hair went from a short fro to my mid-back. It’s so thick and healthy and I even got to focus on my problem areas like my edges. If you can’t always braid yourself, get a good braider who cares for the health of the hair to do it. Don’t let him/her braid it too tight and make sure they deep condition your hair and use a moisturizer.

The key is literally leaving your hair alone!! My hair grew so long when I kept it in sew in weaves for like 2 months at a time! I didn’t even moisturise my hair 😕 I just avoided direct heat and high manipulation.

It’s sad to hear that people have bad experiences with black cosmetologists. My sister is a cosmetologist and she does her best to protect peoples hair. She even gives tips on how to take care of your hair/hairstyle after you leave the salon. The salon she works at won’t even do wigs or certain hairstyles because it’s damaging to the hair. Find a professional who actually cares about keeping your hair healthy and not just making money.

@@iiFallenWish after wash day I moisturize by using : water, my leave in, oil and grease and then I'll put my twists up in a bun and leave it there for a week. Every day and night, I Spritz my leave in conditioner (water and leave in cream mix) on my whole head without taking out my bun or any twists. The grease does an amazing job of keeping my ends moisturize as I have them protected anyways in the bun! Hope that helps

Taking down my box braids takes me like 4 hours lol I spritz each section with warm water and conditioner mix, gently comb out any product at the root, twist and move on. My husband is always like "This is like your wash day." Yeah, now hand me the JBCO and be quiet. I also continue to moisturize and seal my hair while it is braided. No breakage and very little shedding.

I agree with everything you said, right on point. About 3 years ago I started putting my hair in braids or cornrows, keeping it in for 3 months at a time. I get my hair done 3 to 4 times a year resulting in longer hair. I also wash my scalp with my braids in to keep it clean and I also apply my own fenugreek oil and take hair, skin and nail vitamins.

Niya B I been natural my whole life. I’ll use any braids or twists I can, no extensions (& that’s just me), never too tight and I’ve always had long hair (could it be a result of these methods? Maybe). However as I’ve gotten older, I’ve been in the habit of almost ripping out my hair when taking them down. Last time I checked, My hair is about down to my nipple, and I’ve got 3 month old corn rows in right now. So, I’ll come back to this comment and let you know what’s going on after I take them out this time around.

OJ & FRIENDS Protective hairstyles, but first and for most you have to cut off any Strangling the hairs or anything that might be dead. In my case I cut my hair every time I took my hair down. That was the best decision I made within those three years. Also when your hair is in a protective style you need to grease it or oil your hair at least once a week so you’ll keep the hydration in the braids. when you take your hair down I typically use conditioner but you can use oil that’s another way you could break up the dirt when you detangle your hair to minimize breakage. In addition to that I get my hair treated 2 to 3 times a year. My hair is consistently grown for three years. Just always remember to be consistent when you dealing with your hair.

I’m trying to learn how to do my own protective hairstyles. So far I tried box braids for the first time and I’m removing it after 1 month as I’m watching your video because it wasn’t looking good anymore but I’m happy to see my hair seems fine but I really don’t know how to do cornrows despite watching so many tutorials and this the hairstyle that hurt the most my hair when I go to the hairdresser 😩 this growth journey isn’t easy but thank you for your advices and encouragements. This comment literally triggered me. I had a stylist literally cut a big chunk of my hair and pretended she did it by mistake. It took everything within me not to knock tf out of her bc I didn’t wanna be imprisoned 🤣🤣 but Lord did I cause a scene THAT day 🙂

This is exactly what I've learned over the last year! My hair craves moisture and loves to be left alone! So as long as I do those two things it grows and has grown past my shoulders for the first time in my adult life! Thank you so much for all the great advice!

Real talk, these videos are my ish. I don't have the right hair type to best benefit from her advice, but she's so amazing I continue to watch and learn. I was blown away by your comment - like, I was convinced there were like 2 or 3 dislikes. When I saw the amount... I got straight angry. You called it: the only reason somebody could dislike her is out of jealousy.

my mum would force me to relax my hair up until the age of fifteen. Me and my sister hated it one day we decided to shave our heads and that if it grew we wouldn't relax again. It's been a year and a half and I am glad to say I have a 12 inch afro. (6 inches when my hair shrinks). I look forward to my hair passing my shoulders for the first time in my life. I am now 17 and I can say i'ts one of the best choices I have ever made.

Happy you said that, clearly. No need to moisturise your hair every day👌🏾 That's also how I have been able to decrease my hair product stash- If products can't keep my hair moisturised for at least 1 full week😒🙄 it's gone!
