There was no such thing as "Greek Orthodox" back then. Before 1054 followers of christ were not labeled as "Catholics" or "Orthodox" is was just Christian.

@Kyriakos Perisanidis Just because he practised eastern Christianity, doesn't mean that he would necessarily be grouped into the present-day "Greek Orthodox Church". Furthermore, as a Bishop and faithful Christian in the fourth century, Nicholas would have been in communion with Rome at the time, following and accepting the pope as the head of the church. Doesn't seem that "Greek Orthodox" to me.

In fact the equivalent to Santa Claus in Greece is not even St. Nicholas. It is St.Basil whom is celebrated on new years day. This was the time we used to exchange gifts. We didnt decorate trees but little model ships that kids would carry singing carols. Over the years with the globalization I suppose it is the same here as the rest of the Christian world, trees and Santa but we still call him St.Basil.

The material I've been reading up on seems to agree with you. The stories I've read about Saint Nickolas (at least 2 of them which seem believable) are about him saving 3 girls from having to enter a life of prostitution by donating gold to the father of the family. Another one is where he saves a man from getting beheaded by stopping the executioner and eventually getting the judge to admit he got bribed. (there are more too). Wish I knew more about history to vet these stories. It sounded to me like Nicholas was more about helping people who were in horrible situations.

How does this have anything to do with rewriting a story? Saint Nicholas was also European, he was Greek. He still has holidays celebrated for him all across Europe in the beginning of December. Pretty much everyone knows Santa Claus and Saint Nicholas are different things. Maybe you can learn to enjoy European culture, instead of using it as a way to show bitterness towards Europeans. First, you should start by learning history too because it seems like you don't know enough.

Those Santa’s are l’art of Germanic lore and are actually a representation of Odin. The decorated trees and elves and all that fun stuff with gifts are Norse in origin. It’s called Yule and we northerners have been celebrating for thousands of years. This is a bit oversimplified. The modern "Santa Claus" legend actually evolved slowly over time, and can draw its origins to both Saint Nicholas and to the Norse god Odin.
