HSUS's marine mammal scientist Dr. Naomi Rose, author David Kirby of "Death at SeaWorld," and three former SeaWorld trainers visit Puget Sound and observe resident orcas, to compare their lives with those of captive orcas.
I want to be a marine biologist but I'll never work at sea world I'll work at CMA (Clearwater marine aquarium) they only train permanat residents like Winter and Hope
Beautiful and smart piece. Appreciation to all of you for your continued efforts to educate humans on the natural familial bonds and free roaming lives of orca. Alisa
Everyone who watched this should share it on facebook, twitter, blogs, anything you can think of! Tell everyone you know to watch it. They do not belong in captivity. Thank you HSUS, Dr. Rose, Mr. Kirby and all other orgs and individuals against these brutal practices!!
I'm so glad that David wrote his book. If only everyone could read it before they decided to visit Sea World or any other marine park. I hope it's made into a movie soon!
This is such a winning video. Watch it before you go to SeaWorld. Then don't go. Read ch. 3 of David Kirby's Death At SeaWorld which describes the capture of young Tilikum off the coast of Iceland many years ago. It's unbelievable what that animal has been through. Thank you David Kirby, Dr. Rose, and everybody for this terrific video.
There is NO comparison between a captive life and freedom for these incredible geniuses of the ocean. I dream of a day when we live them be, to live their lives as they should be lived.
It is so great to see the Orcas out in nature as they should be! I could only dream of going out and seeing these sights! I just finished reading the book "Death at Sea World" and now have faces to go with the names! What an amazing book! Would be amazing to have all animals set free!
So many Orca's and Dolphins are the subject of slavery & Greed! This breaks my heart!! I will support all that I can and hope that one day.. these beautiful Cetaceans will live free and be left alone on their ocean world. There's already so much Toxins and Garbage in the sea.. I pray to God for their survival & Longevity. Thank you David Kirby, Dr. Naomi Rose
Never, ever, ever, EVER give one single penny to those nasty glorified prisons called Seaworld. Soul shattering for one of the world's most beautiful creature meant to live free and safe from slavery.
Powerful video....excellent job. Some marginalize the importance of this issue given all the injustices that exist in the world, but lets be honest, this is such an easy one to help change and fix: simply don't buy a ticket and share your feelings about it with those you are close to.
no one is talking about completely releasing them, but phasing out the captive program needs to happen. Many scientists have suggested sea pens for their retirement. Circus animals have sanctuaries, cetaceans work until they day they die. They should have a break and experience the ocean, where they were meant to live.
The first time in my life I saw a killer whale do tricks, I cried and cried, i didn't understand my emotions. My emotions knew this was wrong, this was NOT the way to treat an animal (it was in Tenerife, Europe, I am Belgian) Since that day, my life changed completely, understanding AND acting a whole lot more to what's inside of me; caring for animals, working for their rights, opening my eyes, become a vegetarian, spreading the word...... Hey, it happened a little late in my life (27,) but it happened. I grew up next to a farm, I hated it when they slapped their cows or kepped their pigs in little cages, even then I knew, this is not right. (but I still ate meat, I admitt) And yes, we also consumed farm-milk every day, no more for me! Until today, this first killer whale (orka) I ever saw in my lifetime, still means a lot to me, not for it's bad situation, but making me see, how they are exploided, how they are abused and yes, many animals need care, I agree (and only adopt or take strays in) I do what I can, wich is usually not more than donating. (sorry, need to work for money) And yes , I try to spread the word, really. Honestly, I feel very helpless when it come to this........... it looks like a fight I will never win.........
If I could, I would stand outside Seaworld and hand each visitor a copy of this video...for sure they will just have to become ambassodors against caprtivity- how could they not? This should be shown in all schools, it has to be spread as far and wide as possible..caprtivity is such a crime against nature, and against man. Thank You for making this video, am sharing.
Unless things change in our life, we have very strong doubts that we will ever see an orca in the wild. On the one whale watch we were able to do out of MA, we saw dolphins and a wright whale. No other species were sighted that day. We have had hopes of getting to the west coast to see bald eagles and other wild life but as each year passes, those hopes dim and now on fixed income, maybe even less likely.
i started out at the age of 7 being pro captivity. But I grew up and figured all this info out on my own. There is no justification for keeping cetaceans in tiny barren tanks. They go crazy. I understand where you are coming from, but when you get older and learn more about what really happens behind the scenes, and not just what sea world tells you, you will know. I live on san juan island where this was filmed. I see these animals every day, saw them today too.
No, but the breeding program can be phased out so no more captive animals are born. The ones already born into captivity will have to live out their lives as is, or in a natural seapen setting. The ones compatable for release arn't just going to be "thrown in"...but will have a slow reintroduction process that will teach them slowly to fend for themselves. Only a few whales meet the criteria for that...Lolita being one of them.
Thanks for the video, I liked it but They are not actually whales they are dolphins and Could you look into making a video for Lolita or Morgan? Tilli needs help but they do too.
Could we as humans, live happily, forever confined to a 10' x 10' room, made to perform for another species, fed rotten food (orcas food is dead fish, not live as in their natural habitat) have incompatible humans tossed in with us and not go berserk? Same thing for all animals. We sentient earthly beings need and are by the natural laws of existence, entitled to our natural habitats...period.
Yes I totally agree with you. Of course the best place for killer whales and similar marine mammals is the wild ocean but many of the whales in captivity were born there and know no different. No we can not prove that they are happy, but anti-caps can also not prove whether they are unhappy. The whole system is a vicious circle as no-one can agree. I do not agree the blame should get piled onto SeaWorld there are many other parks that hold orcas too which dont recieve nearly as much bad press.
Ninety percent of the people that visit zoos don't have the time and money to see animals in the wild. Unless people learn to love animals that are hundreds or thousands of miles away, those animals are in danger of losing the battle to survive because of poaching and habitat lose.
A Dolphin in captivity is very unkind. Dolphins are mammals with feelings and emotions. They are self-aware, social, complex, and intelligent. Nursing mothers and babies are slaughtered with no mercy or they are stolen for a life of misery confined to small pools in aquariums. No wild animals are being eradicated like the dolphins are being slaughtered in Japan and other parts of the world. Watch THE COVE documentary to learn the TRUTH about Dolphins in captivity.
So what are we suppose to do, free all the animals @ Sea World and let them fend for themselves. I get the point that we shouldn't keep these poor animals in such small enclosures. They belong in their natural surroundings, not in a theme park. Its a hard situation since we cant just throw them back in the wild since some of them have been born in captivity.
Tilikum this, Tilikum that. You didn't even care about Tilikum until that attack in 2010. What I don't get, is that YOU have never been behind the gates of SeaWorld. I'm 12, I live in Florida. When I was 2, I went to SeaWorld for the very first time. And the knowledge I have today, Is because of SeaWorld. If those trainer WANTED to be trainers, why haven't they done their research on their own? It's fair. Have you ever heard of Lolita? Save her. Don't beat up SeaWorld, MiamiSeaquarium is WORSE.
