The electric reverse works pretty good if IMO is used correctly. Read your owner's manual again on how to use it, It is NOT bulletproof but if used correctly it will last. HD has upgraded the electric motor a few times to improve it
What company are you using for the extended warranty for your bikes? I have an 11 tri glide, and that reverse is out. It went out right after my warranty expired lol.

Good video and some good comments. I had my 2011 TG for 8 years & 112K miles. I use reverse every time i ride but its not for any long distance. I traded the '11 in for a '20 and never had a problem with the reverse, still had the original reverse in it. I know this is an exception but it does happen.. I can only hope my experience with the '20 model will be similar.
No, the starter motor is in the same location on the Trike as on the 2 wheel bikes. The reverse motor is a different motor, mounted on the frame behind the right side cover. Thank you for commenting! KP

Mine went out on my 2013 about 2 years ago, they are junk! I just watch how I park, so I can get out, I just deal with it. Harley definitely needs to improve on it, because it is not a cheap fix.
The breaker is designed to click off when too much of a load. It is easy to reset. Never heard of one going bad...but it is mechanical, so that is always a possibility. Thank you for commenting! KP
The reverse went out on my '14 also and was replaced under warranty, I have not had any problems with my '19, in about 3+ years so don't know if Harley improved it or not but I do know that on the'19 when you put it in reverse the engine speeds up just a little so you are not running on the battery alone.
The reverse on my 2014 TriGlide went out 3 years after my warranty did and took to my dealership and believe it or not, they replaced it and didn’t charge me a dime. That’s why I will always go back to the same dealership to buy the next Harley I own.
Hey, cool as usual. I use mine a lot, and it went at 25K miles, but was a warranty fix. Maybe a video on DYI rebuild/replacement some day? Nate, aka OogieWaWa on the HDF. Edit: Never wore my battery down, unless the battery is already weak or you do a LOT of backing up at one time I can't see how it's any worse than using the starter.

I do use my reverse on my 2016 Freewheeler. I bought it used in 2019 and the dealer was already in the process of replacing it before I took delivery. I haven't had any problems yet but do to health reasons I've only locally driven it about 2000k miles since. I know they are weak and I try to park in shade or where I can roll back/push while on the bike. What I try not to do when using the reverse is to keep hitting the button. Such as pressing reverse roll and then pressing again and again. I have had to do that a couple times backing into the garage but I don't like doing that. I try to position the trike as to only hitting the reverse once when needed. I think multiple pressing causes to much wear on anything electric let alone the reverse.
I’ve had my 2010 still on the original reverse . Ur only supposed to backup for like under 20 seconds. It’s not meant to back up for too long lol . I think it’s weird they didn’t do the mechanical from the factory because the servi car was throttle reverse ‘ but I’m still on the original reverse motor .
@@DKCustomProducts i agree less strain on battery life they did electric because I guess it’s cheaper to replace I suppose I would like to and have thought about getting a mechanical reverse but the cost man !!!!!
I had a reverse go out on my 09....it locked up and sheared the armature....i replaced it myself( not a terribly hard job) with a rebuilt starter motor.....no problems for 40k mile...and trade in.....as has been said...use it sensibly...as per owners manual...it shouldn't be a major problem...and as Kevin said..a warranty is a headach remover......ride safe
Harley should build a gear box for their trike. My antique Soviet Union military Dnepr sidecar motorcycle has a gear box with a real reverse gear. If the Soviets could do it in the 1930's for their military motorcycles why can't Harley build a real gear box with reverse for their trike's? I think they just want to sell a crap electric reverse as an add on accessory for extra bucks. New Ural Motorcycles have a real reverse on their sidecar motorcycles so no excuses for Harley not doing the same.
Yes, it probably is a money saver for them....plus easy since it was part of the design that they got from Lehman (HD did NOT design the Tri Glide themselves). Plus it is a bit harder for a novice/newbie to get in trouble with an electric reverse vs. a mechanical (read legal advice/nanny systems)
@@DKCustomProducts the Dnepr and Ural Motorcycle gearbox has a separate lever for reverse so you can't accidentally shift into reverse. There is an internal gate on the forward gear shifter so you must be in neutral before engaging the reverse lever. It's impossible to screw it up. The only reverse gear accessories are a hand reverse shifter mounted beside the gas tank on the right side. Dnepr military motorcycles have a semi-automatic clutch system. Simply pressing down on the toe or heal shifter pads also pulls in the clutch so when moving you simply back of the throttle, shift up or down, then give it throttle as you slowly take pressure off the shifter pad with your foot. It's like that so the driver need not take a firm grip off the handlebar grip to pull in the clutch lever while running at high speed off road and the Gunner is sawing up vehicles and the enemy.
I don't have any problems you guys are dealing with. One of my bikes is a 1957 G servi-car with a 3-speed and reverse gear built into the transmission. Works flawlessly every time
@@DKCustomProducts ,I shared another video of someone working on one, they rebuilt it,and it didn't work. I've had an extended warranty,but it ran out,they Never called me to inform me, now I have No idea where or whom to call for one.
I had my reverse fail twice on my 2019 tri glide, both times it was repaired under warranty, the first time it happened it nearly put me through my fence, I couldn't shut it down & had to stand on the brake until it burnt out, scared the crap out of me.
Here in Australia your extended warranties aren't worth the paper they are written on - Found out the hard way by going to court and the judge was on the side of the car yard.

The reverse motor died on my 2010 about 4 years ago. Sent it to a small shop in Ohio where it was rebuilt for $350. The shop did a good job sealing it for known water leaks and guaranteed it for a year. These Hitachi motors shouldn't be run for more than 10 seconds! BTW, reverse still works to this day.
I wonder if there's a way for someone to DYI retro-sealing them, even on the trike. I know of one thing in particular, there's a little drain tube that's supposed to be there, and if it falls out moisture can splash into the units.
