Dan I like your video so thank you. I will say this though. I have a large kitchen and have 2 smoke detectors in there. Are they a nusance sometimes (yes) but i've been to hundreds of kitchen fires starting out as a pan or pot on the stove left unattended(food onthe stove) that progressed to a full blown kitchen fire. I call them cheap insurance. Second I also have heat, smoke and CO detectors in my garage. Lots of people have electric start for there cars and the range on them is pretty good. It wouldnt take much if the remote was in your pocket jingling around to accidentally start your car in the garage without you knowing it. I had 2 smoke detectors in my basement. neither one went off when some juice from a baked ham spilled in the oven making alot of smoke. The dectors did not go off because the smoke airflow was going in a different direction from the detectors.. I fixed that by putting multiple detectors thru out the basement. Put multiple detectors thru your house!!! I have 7 alone on my first floor (1200 square feet). 2 in the kitchen(cooktop,double wall ovens) 1 in the laundry room(dryer fires) 2 at the bottom of my stairs, 1 in the living room,1 in the dinning room. In my opinion photoelectric are better than ionization detectors. (LOOK UP IONIZATION VS PHOTOELECTRIC DETECTORS) There is no excuse not to have or install these. There a lousy $10 on sale Stay safe everyone Greg A Hartford Fire Ct Department Retired

Just to point out... If you have a CO and Explosive gas detectors unit combo, you should refer to the user manual. The model I own recommend the detector to be near the ground if you use a propane tank and high from the ground if you use natural gas. For the CO, it does not matter. But for the explosive gas, it does matter: Propane sink, natural gas rise...

What is this context ? CO is different than a fuel ie propane or nat gas, which themselves are different. Which model do you own that detects both CO and XGas ?

Thanks for the video, very helpful! I do have a question! I'm renovating a house in the Philippines and I'm pretty certain their has never been a smoke or carbon monoxide detector in the 70+ year old house. We have a 2 burner propane cook-top and the propane tank inside the house. This is common practice there. I'm installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors per the instructions and your general advice. Was wondering if a detector for "explosive gases" should be installed and if so, where? Near the tank/cook-top? Thanks in advance!

For bedroom smoke detectors, you say to install them close to the door. But that is where the air exchanger vents are located in my rooms. Others said to install them in the center of the room. But that is where the light fixture is located. So, where would you recommend in that case? Does it really matter?
@Fredengle

I would suggest you consult the national fire alarm code its called nfpa 72 but I think it says something like must be 3 feet from a heat exchange and I am pretty sure there is supposed to be a distance from a light fixture I am not sure I am also not a fire alarm technician but my advice woud be check the above named code nfpa 72 and see if it is not address there good luck !!! also did you know the type of smoke detectors you use can make a difference between life and death have you seen this video ???? it was done by a group that one of my former bussiness conslutants is a member on this was done on good moring america : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9k-EgjYEIgg.htmlsi=yJcxhsB1Ohrf9uG1 and did you know that a us court case stated that the combination is not a safer alternative to ion or photo my former bussiness consultant now on the smoke alarm committe stated if you want both sensors its better to have separate alarms than a combo sensor : Here us a U.S court case stating the combo is not safer than ion or photo : caselaw.findlaw.com/court/al-supreme-court/1746520.html

Some people are reluctant to replace old 9v smoke detectors with 10 year non replaceable lithium ion because of the initial cost. The problem with this thinking is that all smoke detectors have a functional life span and should be replaced after 10 years. The total expense spread over 10 years is about the same because you will use (20) 9v batteries in a 9v detector and the total cost will be about the same as one 10 year lithium detector.. And over that 10 year period, your body may reach the point where you will no longer be capable of climbing a ladder to change batteries twice a year.

Just get them both separately don’t be cheap with safety especially with kids. CO placement in bedrooms should be placed at sleeping nose level. That is the earliest detection while your sleeping. Think of these as needing to breathe in order to work properly. Put in the best place in the room to get the most air. (Not outside air)all rooms are different, layout is different with diff furniture placements. Install where it can breathe the most air in that room. Use common sense and it will work if needed.

Simply delightful! However, choosing a 10 year battery smoke alarm is now an outdated concept in light of ULs new requirements: 217, 8th edition & 268, 7th edition smoke alarm / detector standards. Placing the detector closest to the middle of the ceiling, away from vents & fans is optimal, according to credible sources. A 10-year-battery life sealed ionization smoke alarm does not trump the new UL 217 & 268 smoke alarm / detector requirements - see ULs website. Also, ionization smoke alarms are notoriously unreliable & have been the source of many lawsuits in fatal fires, so please CHECK what you have & convert to non-sealed photoelectric or UL rated 217, 8th edition type. 9 volt lithium batteries are available if you want longer battery-operated smoke alarm operation times. I've installed professional grade CO detectors, which wire to an alarm panel & directions specify to install approx. 48" above the floor - credible manufacturer specs on a listed life-safety-device.

If you buy a 10 year Carbon Monoxide detector, note the date of manufacture that is stamped inside the unit. The warranty goes from the date the unit was manufactured, not the purchase date. This also tells you when you really need to replace it if it does indeed last 10 years. You really don't know how long the unit was sitting on the shelf at the retailer before you purchased it, so it's good to know.

Ours went off and we had to leave house. Then came the questions on location. Mine was on hearth and it worked. I based this on what may be a lie. A mom riding in back seat with child on lap. Child died due to gas coming up toward roof. Mom was not hurt as she was above level when child died. Now I am not sure this was a true story.

The main confusion I run into is people confusing carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Carbon monoxide (CO) is a byproduct of certain types of combustion, and is essentially the same density as normal air. While carbon dioxide (CO2) is a heavier than normal air, and in high enough concentrations will sink to the lowest point in the area until it mixes into the surrounding air given enough time and air movement. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the same gas found in your soda and beer, and is harmless unless found in very large quantities in enclosed spaces. Carbon monoxide (CO) is what we want to detect in homes, as it is a byproduct of combustion that can overcome your bodies ability to absorb normal Oxygen (O2) even in low quantities. It is not heavier than normal air, and will travel throughout the home. It will accumulate in our blood over time, and can cause headaches and fatigue. You can be suffocated without even realizing what is happening. We had a propane heater in our home malfunction, and we were being exposed to carbon monoxide every night in our bedroom for months until we figured out the source of our headaches and fatigue. This was before carbon monoxide detectors/alarms were required or available.

The density of CO is approximately 93% of the density of air, suggesting to me that placing it somewhat closer to the ceiling would be preferable.

@tarugozaka-moko6968 5 лет назад
Mistake: Carbon Monoxide is LESS dense than air. Doesn't that tell you to install the detector close to the ground..?
@suncat9
@suncat9 5 лет назад
No it does not. A gas LESS dense than air would tend to rise in the air. Keep in mind, however, that air is composed of many gases. "By volume, dry air contains 78.09% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.04% carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases. Air also contains a variable amount of water vapor, on average around 1% at sea level, and 0.4% over the entire atmosphere." (source: Wikipedia)

Dear Dan, So because of the fact that there are carbon monoxide detectors on the market that are wall outlet plugin or combination with smoke detectors, you say its common sense that it does not matter to put it on the ceiling, or high or low on a wall. That is not a very good advice. The heigth does matter. The earlier carbon monoxide is detected the more time you have to escape. Did you know that the First Alert smoke/carbon monoxide alarm is more than 20 years old? The battery needs to be replaced every year. Combination alarms should be forbidden. Buy separate smoke and co-detectors. Install co-detectors at living heigth. Sleep height in bedrooms and just a little higher that your windows in living rooms. But not in the draft. Place co-alarms in the same room as a appliance that produces carbon monoxide. And last but not least, please install a co-detector in your garage, cars produce gas with carbon monoxide in it. Questions? Just ask me.
@erinbarger3822
@erinbarger3822 7 лет назад
Patrick Hageman , I agree with you about CO height but not on location. Every time you put your car into or out of the garage you will be setting your alarm off. It is generally advised to put the CO alarm where CO should not be so you know there is a problem. I advise inside the house near the garage door but not in the garage. If you place an alarm in the room with a gas appliance it should be at least 15 feet away to avoid constant false alarms from appliance start up.

Not a fan of the 10 year battery idea. We have/had smoke detectors with 10 year batteries and some malfunctioned and went off after only one year. The only way to shut them up is to permanently disable them.Then you're out the money and have to buy a new one. I wouldn't trust the 10 year battery in a CO detector to last ten years either.

This video is wrong. The reason for CO detectors that plug in is for marketing reasons because of convenience. CO is lighter than air with a molar mass of 28.0 and air with a molar mass of 28.8 Also keep in mind CO is produced from incomplete combustion which needs a heat source. Air tends to rise because of this warming of the air. This is just plain common sense . We taught this stuff in elementary school as kids when the firefighter come in and tell you to stay low and crawl if necessary to escape a fire. It's not just cause of smoke its also cause the most of CO in those situations will rise ...

Carbon monoxide has a molecular weight which is slightly lighter than air; but despite that fact, it doesn't just rise to the ceiling. The difference in density between air and CO is minimal and because of this difference, it causes the gas to have a neutral effect in any room.

@mikul93 you obviously didn't read my post above stating all factual information. Just because of the fact that CO is produced by incomplete combustion it will rise. Any type of combustion will rise because the air is being super heated to make combustion. All the smoke of combustion RISES at that time. Again CO is lighter than air , yes it is minimal but it will rise first before completely filling a room.....

@mikul93 when you post something like you did, it makes you look incompetent and very stupid. So you just going is just digging your hole deeper. You probably a person that's goggles everything and you probably never used any combustion measuring tools in your life. Anyone can read the garbage your spewing out and cab see you have zero experience with this....

This guys logic is flawed. Why would they sell you a plug in a CO if it were supposed to be mounted high? Because people will sell anything that a uninformed buyer will buy! CO is lighter than O2. Just look at the periodic table and you'll find that Carbon is two left of Oxygen. Carbon's molecular weight is 12.01 and Oxygen is 15.99. Tell me again how CO is same as O2? Do the math! Mount your CO's higher than bed level. If you mount them low, you're already dead or close to it by the time the damn thing goes off!

And I thought you made a nice video...making something dreadfully boring like smoke detectors an entertaining topic.
