Death is a risk in this game of honor defense. Knife fighting is rare, but it does exist. In this video we explore Filipino knife fighting as a dangerous cultural construct for conflict resolution --- the objective is not necessarily to kill your opponent, just cut him a little bit.
Please note, this is not self-defense...nor is it a self-defense tutorial. The material presented is for entertainment and educational purposes only.

Hey man, I just wanted to say I appreciate this video a lot. Fellow Filipino, instructor but forever-student of edged weapons, firearms, and combatives. Your videos, going all the way back to the older ones, were one of the biggest reasons we started making videos in the first place when we started up our company. And the way you have connected with so many great instructors, continued to train and learn, and gave them some spotlight to grow as well...we have tried to emulated that! Just wanted to say thanks and cant wait for more content. We will hopefully be putting out more of our own as well! Cheers.

Because kali is a much lesser known fma name. . You should have said arnis/eskrima/Doce pares/stick fighting. The areas that you went to are not hotbeds of the martial arts either. If you were in Cebu, Iloilo, manila, they would know what you are talking about.
@jamiirali1
@jamiirali1 4 года назад
Yeah kali is a popular western term i believe the late GM Floro villabrille related to guro inosanto in his book filipino martial arts .. Especially amongst those i knew from kALI-FORNIA.. before i moved to California i always knew it as escrima or arnis ....a good dvd to watch is "kali means to scrape"...the narrator went around asking everyday filipinos what kali was and most gave him a confused look until he mimicked sinawali... or maybe i think one civilian mimicked sinawali when the camera man said arnis.

Go in the visayas region. It's where most of the GMs come from and where it was mainly invented. Cebu, Negros, Leyte, Panay Island etc. And it is better known as Arnis/Eskrima/Doce Pares.

Kali is really just a catch-phrase to all FMA styles popularly used by FMA historian GM Dan Inosanto . Growing up in the 70's , I only heard of eskrima and arnis taught in high schools as part of Phys Ed. Pinoys would easily recognize those terms. Knife fighting is also categorized to that.

GN i think you need to explain the reasons why they have the telegraphed drills that mimic dances as our ancestors hade to train and adapt the style to not look suspisciously like martial arts as it was banned by the Spanish invaders when we were occupied for more than 400 years. In order the the Grand masters to continue the artform they came up with the different cultural dances like tinikling (footwork), pandango sa ilaw (hand eye coordination), sayaw sa banko (balance), maglalatik and more just to name a few. Thats probably why we love entertaining so much. Is because lolo said so not knowing he was our first Sensei Miyagi.

While it is interesting to analyse a combative system, whether it be a hand to hand to weapon system, there is always the danger of over-analysing what is happening. While it’s great to break down the intricacies, sometimes this creates a false sense of understanding about how to fight with whatever. In regards to knife fighting, there is a romantic notion that two combatants square off and exchange strikes, blocks and counter strikes in some sort of physical poetry. The reality is quite different and confronting. One must remember that offence beats defence and proximity negates shill. If the aggressor with the knife plans on killing you, there is a pretty good chance that is going to happen. You simply won’t get a chance to defend or get your own knife out, forget about trying to drop into a defensive position, knife at the ready. Like most martial arts, over analysing technique is an attempt to predict the unpredictable and control the uncontrollable. The reactionary gap (time wise) between the attacker’s initial move and the defender’s counter is just too short. It’s great to study, but don’t get lured into the fantasy that you’ll be able to square off with someone like Jim Bowie and come out unscathed.

Here what I personally think about what to do in a knife fight: 0. DO NOT BE THERE! Use ambient and context awareness to AVOID SUCH EVENTS AT ALL COST (avoid dangerous cities/quartiers, avoid to be alone, avoid dark places, analize people/situations around you and instinctively detect danger, avoid confrontations, avoid to show valuable items, GIVE VALUABLE ITEMS TO THE ROBBER IN ORDER TO STOP THE ATTACK, ...) 1. BE EQUIPPED: WEAR PROTECTION CLOTHES that cannot be cut (kevlar shirts, rivetted chainmails, ...), keep with you a very powerful torch/flashlight, if viable and legal in your country keep a ranged weapon (gun, taser, peper spray, baton, kubotan, ... according with your country's laws) with you every time, especially (at night) if you visit new areas, new city or you sense that in you area the danger level is high or is going up. 2. BE FIT/TRAINED mentally and physically (be confident and SHOW confidence, be fit and SHOW your fitness, train your reflexes, be prepared/trained for bad situations, you should be fit enough to run at maximum speed for a considerable amount of time and enough to overcome some basic obstacles (walls, fences, differences in heights, gaps, ...), BE TRAINED in close quarter combats/mma/self defense tecniques/martial arts ... 3. RUN AWAY AT ALL COSTS: KEEP IN MIND THAT IF YOU NOT SUCCED IN THIS TASK YOU WILL BE QUITE SURELY INJURED NO MATTER WHAT! Detect danger, use reflexes, put in place a quick useful diversion (use torch/flashlight, throw item at them, ...) and go away form the danger (in combination with ambient awareness in order to know how to follow an escape part that is possible AND is viable for you). IF AND ONLY IF YOU CANNOT RUN AWAY BECAUSE IT IS IMPOSSIBLE OR YOU SHOULD STAY TO PROTECT SOMEONE YOU CARE THAT CANNOT RUN FAST AS YOU, then continue with the next points: 4. ATTRACT ATTENTION FROM POLICE OR OTHER PEOPLE: use allarm sounds, whistles, yells, ... to attract attention: be prepared to not find anyone who wants to help you or to be involved into some trouble/fight. Police also is not ubiquitous so prepare not to find any officer. In any case it is a necessary attempt. 4. BE PREPARED TO BE INJURED: mentally fit means also that you need to keep fighting even if you will be injured: good training, cold mind and adrenaline will keep you up for a while even if you are severely injured and htat can make the difference from life and death 5. FIGHT USING A RANGED WEAPON (you a re trained with): guns (if viable in your country), tasers (if viable in your country), pepper guns/sprays (professional ones), or other effective blunt ranged weapons if trained in that weapon. If you don't/can't carry a weapon use improvised weapons of any kind that you can find in the ambient (remind ambient awareness) and use them for diversion or as weapons (bottles, chairs, pans, kitchen knives, ...) 6. FIGHT WITH YOUR BARE HANDS if necessary and as long as you can't escape or neutralize the menace. In order to protect form a knife you should be trained in such situation: you will be cut anyway but if you know the right tecniques and you have trained them A LOT maybe it si possible to overcome the menace. Goof martial arts for this are specific soldier training, Krav Maga, classical Jujitsu, Kali, ... But the difference is based on the amount of specific training, reflexes and strengt of your body. 7. ESCAPE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! Your duty is not to kill, empair or arrest your attacker: your duty is to keep you and the people you care alive! Escape from danger event/zone/attacker(s) as soon as possible quickly and fast as you can.

@@SCAR16s I can understand you're doubts and you are entitled to them. Whatever floats your boat so they say. Not here to argue to be honest, but fact of the matter is filipino sword, stick and knife fighting are all real. This isn't me telling you all of this, this is a country's history. Philippines has always used this system since pre-colonization, spanish colonization, filipino revolution againsy spain, american colonization when spain sold the country to america, filipino revolution against america, world war 2, philippine independence, martial law etc. Heck, if I remembee correctly, in the 1960's there were cases of people killing each others in duels, be it sword, stick or knife. You can choose not to believe me, that's no skin off of my back. But you can't refute history. Heck there are still cases of people in poorer communities settling disputes through full contact stick fighting. Similar to how irish gypsys would settle disputes through bareknuckle boxing. Again I'm just sharing some of my country's history since I felt the need to at least speak up when people call b.s. on the history of my country. Take whatever you can from that information. Believe me or not that's up to you. I simply advise to look up on the Philippines' history before drawing a conclusion.

This reminds me of sabong or cockfighting. In the Philippines, even the roosters use knives when fighting. 😂

Sabayan is the mother drill of the Pekiti Tirsia Kali System --- a simple drill with infinite avenues for exploration. Look it up.

Stick to formless knife fighting ...lest your opponent recognize your form and counter it. An opponent fighting against an person armed with a knife should immediately give offense to the opponent ad play defense...and that is the only form one should have. Knife fighting is way unpredictable. I got 57stitches my first knife defence...but I am alive to tell about it why? Because like the elastic, my actions depend upon the tension put on by my opponent before I snap to release my energy in a knife fight.

knife fighting is stupid, knives are used to cut your food open boxes and as an absolute last resort for defence, think smart live long.

99.9% of all knife use is for utility and every day life. You are right - knife fighting is extremely stupid.
