At least always write to an Airbnb host before prepayment. Ask if power lines have been airbrushed out of the outside photo (it's a Greek custom to do that especially if your patio BBQ is inches away). Say you're allergic to mold and cigarettes and see if you can tell from the answer if they're lying or not. For a ground floor apartment, ask if half the place is below ground because it's on a hill. Nothing like a dose of radon

You are pretty safe traveling Europe, don’t stress about that. Like in the US just pay attention around you, worst case is a pick pocket, and it’s not because you’re American. I know of noone being targeted as Americans in Europe for attacks or crime. Thus said the state department warnings can seem foreboding, you should google what countries tell their citizens about the safety in the USA. Thanks for watching 😁

I totally agree. We've had bad hotel stays about the same % as bad Airbnbs. The key is just doing your homework with a place. Ask good questions like what floor the apartment is on? Have a list of questions you ask the owner before you book - don't just show up. Look on Google Maps and view the neighborhood.

Nice video. I traveled eastern Europe for 2 years during the height of covid using Airbnb. One thing I always did was to test the host before booking with a few questions about the area that was not answered in the description. If the reply was rude, sarcastic or took more than a few hours to reply I moved on. Overall Airbnb and eastern Europe worked out well.

Great content guys. Agree with you on it all. We have only been world travel for a short time but we have been using AirBNB for our other travel since 2017. I could not imagine staying in a hotel in many countries for any length of time. While in North America hotels do not seem to come with outdoor balconies, they do in most other countries. But we always want a kitchen and outdoor space, We have not had any major negative airbnb experiences. For now our place in Albania is fine. It had been cleaned half well before we arrived but it had no towels. The person who greeted us and let us in we did not let leave until they had communicated with the owner, or whomever is really behind the "business" and they ended up bringing us several fresh and clean towels. We will pay less for a month in our current home than it would cost for 2 or 3 nights in a hotel back at home. And that is not an expensive hotel.

FYI, if you arrive to an unclean or less than clean place, you have the right to ask for it to be cleaned appropriately. Airbnb will intervene if necessary. I’m glad they brought you towels. 😊

Agree 100%! We stayed in Funchal for 89 wonderful days. Had a fantastic property at casa branca apartments. Next door was a pub named Local Bar full of interesting people run by Eli and his Mum. We became completely immersed in Funchal. Many people will wonder why slow travel? Ignore the noise. Once you make the plunge, it’s the only way to go. 35 days until our 2.5 month stay in Italy. Repositioning cruise to Rome. Enjoy!

Thanks for this video. My wife and I are analyzing all the travel options available. We just saw a video on another you tube channel where this couple has ditched Airbnb and is strictly staying at hotels. Their theory is based on using points from hotel credit cards, buying thousands of points and using vouchers and awards. This only works if you have access to these credit cards. However the idea of spending 30-40 days in a hotel room does not appeal to us. We look forward to your report on the new offering that is coming out. In another matter, we were looking at getting a motor home. But after years of following you tubers that travel via motor home, we have decided that this is not for us. You have opened a new avenue with your situation where you purchased a car to travel. We don’t have animals, but the idea of traveling with all the clothing and personal items such as pillows and toppers is appealing. Now that you have introduced the German business that handles car purchases in Europe, we think this would be a very viable option. You have also peaked our interest in Montenegro and Serbia. We really appreciate your insights and videos.

This type of option does not work well when traveling with pets or a vehicle. Hotels often charge a lot extra for both parking and pets. We don't personally have a desire to open several credit card accounts, so this does not appeal to us. We generally dread spending our one- or two-night stays in hotels as we travel from one country to the next. Traveling with our things gives us a sense of home. Having our vehicle gives us limitless freedom too and makes getting from place to place much more enjoyable. Montenegro and Serbia are great places. We love both of these countries. I'm with you, Julie: I dislike the heat. So off-season travel works well for me and it's cost effective. Also, you guys are so right about the cost of Airbnbs in the States. Most listings in my area are outrageously priced. Thanks for another great video, guys!

Where we are from the local governments are banning AirBNB short term rentals. In North America it has become a profiteering situation due to lack of housing supply. When you realize that many other countries have the opposite... a surplus of housing, then the prices are more reasonable. Where we are living now I would say maybe 80% of the apartments within a couple km's are completely vacant. You can't demand high prices in that environment.

We are on year 3 of full time AirBnB and are getting pretty tired of it. We really want to buy our own place to spend part of the year at least. Spend most of our time between Mexico and Eastern Europe. My wife is really diligent when picking AirBnBs. In Eastern Europe even with 1 month plus rentals the prices in eastern europe are getting insane relative to what property prices are. We always have requirements for a full kitchen, Park with playground, gym, grocery shopping all within 10 minute walk. The problem with Air Bnb and negotiating is that a lot of the time the Air Bnb is managed by a broker or property manager.

I do agree the prices of AirBNB are much higher in comparison to market long-term rent in Eastern Europe. We tend to find places that are owned by individuals. Our selection of properties is considerably smaller than people without pets. Perhaps you could consider a home base in one of the two places you mentioned. Best of luck with your travels.

I slow traveled from 2015-2018, staying monthly in Airbnb's across Asia & Europe. Other than a few minor issues like a leaky toilet or the occasional cockroach, I had very positive experiences. My hosts were very accommodating and the apartments were clean and safe. In return, I made sure I left them clean, washing linens and taking out the trash before I left. The worst experience I had was in the US - one host cancelled while I was on the plane flying back from Asia so I had to scramble to book a hotel when I arrived!

@@WarrenJulieTravel I had trouble at the airport in Madeira because I didn’t have a return ticket. I’m just ignorant, thought I’d apply for a residence visa upon arriving. Apparently you should do this prior to coming. I had planned on staying, but I will have to return home to get the d7 visa in order to stay more than 90 days. The border people weren’t impressed, the detained me for hours, made me prove accommodations, and income ugh.😑

The year stay would not work for American travelers without a European passport but for all your European followers or those already with digital nomad or visas in a certain country it's great. I just wish the European Shengen visa would allow you to do six months at one time then six months out of the Shengen rather than the three month Shengen, three month out of Shengen. What was their thinking? That Americans, Canadians, Australians and others would fly back home for three months, then spend extra money buying another ticket, getting new travel insurance and going back to Europe? Do they want to discourage tourism? If someone wants to just see Europe, Spain, Italy, France, Greece which is really what a lot of first time travelers want to do in depth, six months would be a decent amount of time to see Europe. I like the balkans also, but most of them are now also Shengen.

Thanks for the video. One point you didn’t mention is the role Airbnb plays in taking housing stock away from the locals. I used to love staying in them but now I feel too guilty and wonder if I have taken an apartment away from one of the locals. We too are snowbirds from Canada and have switched to apart/hotels. They aren’t as comfortable as Airbnb’s but they give us the space we need.

Yes, I do. I try to be respectful, but I highlight things that were less than stellar. It’s hard when the host is wonderful, but it’s important to manage the expectations of the people reading reviews.
