70% of women in their 20's? Goodness me. IMO this is just perpetuating unrealistic beauty standards. Cosmetic, fashion and other industries that use models should have to use warnings in ads. For years now Dove has given back a portion of sales to self esteem projects. Again, IMO, those who have cosmetic procedures are very judgemental of other's appearance
@yeongwonhan95
@yeongwonhan95 Месяц назад
The dove example is like saying that oil companies give back to companies that do carbon capture, wouldn't stopping perpetuating the problem just be better? same with the warning in the ads, it's like warnings on cigarette packages, it never stopped anyone from smocking. All of this is clearly not enough. However, I agree with you, pressure on appearance is immense, I would say especially for women, and the bare minimum would be what you suggested but ideally more should be done as the damages these companies do far outweigh the little they do to compensate
@NovaLyceum
@NovaLyceum Месяц назад
@@yeongwonhan95 I will disagree with you on 'especially women'. Where I'm located there's been a shocking rise in eating disorders amongst young men. I understand this video concentrates on South Korea but again where I'm located cosmetic procedures are still charged at a price that is out of reach for most. I would say add a special tax, as they have in my region on cigarettes. Hitting people in the pocket book is usually a sure fire way to curb behaviour. But given the prevalence of cosmetic procedures in South Korea perhaps the populace wouldn't be in favour of such measures.

I disagree. Commenting on people’s physical appearance is also done in Filipino culture. When my in-laws comment, they aren’t saying “oh you are so cute like a little pig.” NO! They are literally calling me a fat pig. True malice is meant in their statements to me. Waving it off as if it is just a cultural issue is not ok. It is never ok to constantly harp on someone’s physical appearance. If people kept harping on Tony about his broken nose, I doubt he’d think that was cute or loving. It’s like calling a little girl gordita in Spanish. I get that the person saying it might mean well and use it as a term of endearment. But, the little girl doesn’t feel good about herself being called a little pig.

True. The worst thing is those relatives are not even close to you. The lolas and the titas from your secondary family would even say "Ano nangyari sa katawan niya?".. "Tumanda na siya.". Conversations during reunions usually revolve around repetitive comparisons, criticisms about other people's lives, gossips and the superficiality of their senseless talks just goes on. 😂😂

He’s not wrong it is a person’s right to change themselves. But comparing to going to the gym or using makeup versus plastic surgery seems a bit apples and oranges. Plus it’s a bit of a shame a ‘sizable portion’ of an entire nation doesn’t see the beauty in their natural appearance and feel the need to medically enhance themselves. It’s their right but just a bit sad to hear. Love yourself for who you are!
@chrisdt2297

Well, those who with heavy plastic surgery usage, tend to also go to the gym and use makeup There's only so much plastic surgery can do, so if they want to meet the beauty standard (sometime unheathy) they need to do EVERYTHING. Those bodybuilders also rely on certain type of plastic surgeries. And you mentioned that makeup, which a lot of the country have a sizable portion of the population uses (since ancient times cross-continent, both man and women), also represent the "doesn’t see the beauty in their natural appearance". (also those ancient body modification traditions, is plastic surgery but even more extreme) The desire that drives all of this is widespread across the world and deeply rooted

But when I see and hear that a young man has to worry about not getting this or that job because of his appearance. And he seriously thinks that it could be because of his appearance and he only sees an opportunity to change it, then something must be fundamentally wrong. I view the demographic change with great concern. As well as the aging of Korean society. Of course I could think: "What does all this have to do with me?" And yet I have great empathy for this country and its people.

I'll give some context to why Asians tend to comment on other people's appearance, and point things out about others that differs a little from this man's, as an Asian person raised and living in Asia. It's motivated not just from a place of concern (it is, but it's layered), it comes from a place of concern that you are "sticking out", or something is "abnormal". To paint in very broad strokes, Asian societies put community over self, which sounds nice and altruistic when you put it that way, but there is a flip side/second layer to it. Ever heard of the Japanese proverb "the nail that sticks out must be hammered down"? If you are "out of place" in society, you should strive to "return to the fold" to "make things easier for others", to "become a part of the majority". No matter what. Because you being "out of place" is a problem, you are the inconvenience, the reason society is not cohesive. Sometimes being a part of something bigger is a great thing, sometimes it just tanks your self-worth because it's now tied to what others perceive you to be. When people say you "look tired", it's because, of course, "looking tired" is not a "good thing". The "ideal way to be" is to NOT be tired, but well-rested, right? So the observation comes with an implication, a suggestion: fix this about yourself. Yes, it comes from "concern" for you, but instead of asking "are you doing alright?" and waiting/seeing how the person responds, STATING "you look tired" implies that it's enough of a problem that the person should be concerned, as they look out of place/less than ideal. That's why the insecurity in Asia exists to SEEM not tired, even if you are. You have a duty (it feels like) to keep up appearances and LOOK well-rested. Sure, some people just rest to "fix it". And sometimes you are praised for being "pale, tall, having a small head, etc" (fitting standards = good), but sometimes you get called "looking a little dark", or "fat pig". Aunties have told me before: "you've lost weight! now just a little bit more until you're just right", because that's when you hit society's mark, in their eyes. And what does capitalism and the beauty industry do when these visible "issues" exist? Prey on that insecurity. Here's filler for your eye bags. Here's makeup. Here's liposuction and double eyelids and a nose job, too. Here's all these methods to fix these observed problems because society is telling you that you are less than ideal/you stick out, and you don't want to hear that you are a visible problem any more, and you want people to like you automatically because you fit the beauty standard. "Taking care of yourself" here is sometimes taken to an extreme, because it reflects on you as a PERSON. Looking unkempt is being the nail that's out of place. So the motivation in Asia for all of these "corrective" cosmetic surgeries comes from, predominantly, the feeling of being out of place and wanting to fit the "best, ideal state" better. In Asia, society is the best when it looks the best and everyone is doing their part, is the message. Fitting those ideals means you are a good person, regardless of how YOU actually feel.

It lacks scientific socio-cultural background while using personal anecdotes to replace it with. I don't believe it's deliberately doing so but the quality of these talks in similar videos are really not doing justice to the complex topics it's about. In this one the dynamic of Korean society and economic factors in relation to demand of procedures, societal pressure, optimization and dissociation of oneself, the norm of toxic beauty standards endorsement and the overall importance of 'beauty' - blatant lookism should have been talked about more imo, the POV is just one-sided as well ofc. Medical Tourism is a missnomer that falsely advertises. When you are a tourist, you go enjoy the sights, food, etc. Tourism is about enjoyment. Medical matters are different. There are Thai people who go to Korea and got their faces destroyed in a bothched plastic surgery. Like all medical procedures, the one selling the medical procedures ("the sellers"), got the "buyers" to sign documents to waive many of their rights. As a foreigner with a botched plastic procedure, there is little to zero chance to win a legal battle against the sellers. Imagine that you do not know the language, the culture, the society, the legal system, etc. and you try to get fairness on a bothched plastic surgery. Even if the plastic surgeon is in your own country, you still have a formidable legal battle in your own country. I cannot help but see that medical plastic surgery tourism is a highly risky proposition.

I usually commend Asian boss. However this episode just appears that it’s a pure marketing effort for this guys company. Stephen asked : there are botched procedures. He answered : hire an agent ( aka us ). The real reason there are botched procedures is inexperienced doctors , and of course the pure innate risk involved. He also says ‘ our company , we ‘ etc. This sounds like a pure biz interview. It doesn’t exactly provide a comprehensive and unbiased picture of the plastic surgery scene in Korea. Nonetheless , he does provide good insights of what to watch out for.

Most of the SK plastic surgery is scary, looks so abnormal. I’m watching a SK drama atm, and I can’t focus coz the main character’s plastic surgeries are so noticeable. SK plastic surgeons are better than most, but it’s not an attractive and natural look. I think it’s the nose jobs that are the worse

He nicely explained why koreans do a lof of plastic surgery and the history of korea and culture are huge factors contributing to this and not just because they all hate themselves. I lived there for around 6 months and can agree to some points. In order to change those things you would need to change the whole system of korea which basically is really difficult to master. I advice watching the history of south korea to get a better understanding of this.

Also the huge makeup market, which a lot of the country have a sizable portion of the population uses (since ancient times cross-continent, both man and women), also represent the "doesn’t see the beauty in their natural appearance". (also those ancient body modification traditions, is plastic surgery but even more extreme) It's just that Korean make the risk low enough (debatable, sometimes they just make it perceived as low), cheap enough, that make plastic surgery competitive against makeup. (Makeup and the time spent applying it is also quite expensive, especially with Korean's high working hours, plastic surgerie's low mentainence is very attractive) But the desire that drives all of this is widespread across the world.

I admire Koreans’ dedication to work, looks, etc. the effort they put into it, as the doctor has stated. However, we should not underestimate the pressure this puts onto a society striving for perfection. It has reached a point, where people are being coerced into these standards. There’s a reason why the birth rates are low, alcoholism and suicidal intentions are common. I feel like, Korea has become a ticking bomb…

One of the serious issue with South Korean society is lack of transparency whether it be from their government officials, journalists, medical professionals and so forth. Unlike many western countries where you know there are issues whether it be gun control, racism, immigration issues in the community but once there issues have been identified, there are laws and many times the accused are given serious punishment but in south korea there is too many corruption. A medical doctor will serve 3 to 5 yrs for manslaughter which is a joke of a punishment. I am sorry but there are strict laws in the western countries that prohibit such unethical misconduct by medical professionals and if they are found guilty there is much harsher punishments.

Westerners are concerned about love of themselves when we cannot even love others without thinking about their race. I believe that we want to continue imposing our culture instead of finding a neutral stage of understanding. Yes there are bad Asians with bad intentions between the lines but also westerners are with actions and harm words. It does not exists perfection that’s for sure I think social media is giving bad perspectives about how to love yourself and how would you like to see in the mirror, there is dysmorphia everywhere this is the reason why the doctor mentions that you have to work in yourself not having expectations about looking like someone else therapy therapy therapy before any changes we need this to heal the real reason why we want a change then continue with it or not. I totally respect Asian culture in so many ways I won’t accept everything that they said of course I’m not used to but I will take those things that I lack to be a better human❤

10:06 How can you begin to compare plastic surgery with make up!? I have seen so many YT videos of young South Korean women and men feeling pressured by society to have surgery even though they might not necessarily want it. When you apply for a job, you have to attach a photograph of yourself and your appearance will influence your potential employer's desire to interview you or not. I can understand a fashion model needing to look a certain way, but an engineer, a biochemist? Why should your looks matter. I actually find that immoral. I'm thinking of a particular girl I saw on YT that thought her looks were only 3 out of 10 and that she would probably save to have surgery. She looked sooooo pretty and adorable and everyone's comments said so. And yet her SK society made her feel unacceptable. Utterly heartbreaking!

This says "oh u can choose to be anything" i hate this statement because, no.. reality is we can't be anything and everything we want to. But we can work and try to achive what we belive is the best for us and thats personal perspective. As a 40+ Korean-American woman, I have mixed feelings about plastic surgery. Personally, I wouldn’t do it. After all, it’s still surgery with risks. However, I don’t judge those who do get it, since it’s their body and money. Though like many women, I have insecurities about my face and body. However, I’ll stick to non-invasive methods to alter my appearance. In other words, skincare, diet, exercise, etc.. Admittedly, I do admire Korean celebrities’ beauty, but realistically I know they’re under a lot of stress/pressure to meet beauty standards.
