how does great british bake off manage to have better diverse casting than these dating shows?? wild
@tiffanyferg

I need a new season of bake off ASAPPPP !!
@krombopulos_michael
@krombopulos_michael 2 года назад
Because they aren't supposed to all be having sex with each other. The interpersonal relationships in Bake Off are really not that important, so you can have many people of different ages, ethnicities, weights, heights, sexualities, abilities, etc. As long as they can bake pretty well, it doesn't matter. They usually all get along fairly well and are generally polite to each other, but that's not hugely important. On shows like Love Island or other "love" shows, the point is to create drama by having as much sexual tension and jealousy as possible. To facilitate this, all the contestants need to be young, attractive, in good shape, etc. and also horny so the other contestants will be sexually attracted to them. If one person is substantially less conventionally attractive, they won't stand a chance.
@dreamweaver1113
@dreamweaver1113 2 года назад
@@krombopulos_michael That's true, I guess it's just weird that the camaraderie that comes out of GBBO is technically more of a bug than a feature, but that's what makes the show so special. That all the contestants come from different backgrounds but all have knowledge and love of baking in common. It's a show that's accidentally but unapologetically diverse (definitely not perfect), and maybe reality TV, esp dating shows, need to model after that? Tiffany, please do a GBBO video we need your contribution to the discourse!!!!

@@dreamweaver1113 the diversity and camaraderie between contestants are one of the main reasons I love GBBO. It’s not your usual reality show even compared to other cooking shows. To add insult to injury about the black woman issue - the producers cut out a conversation Sharon and Kaz (asian and black ladies) had a with the group about how it’s harder to date as a woman of colour. So they LI producers know what they are doing. As a black woman for my mental health I’ve stopped watching, it for reinforces the notion of no matter how I try and look good, I’m not desirable.

Speaking as a Black person in the UK, for me it's never been the 'number' of ethnically diverse contestants, but more about 'who' they represent. E.g. A Black person on love island means nothing to the Black community if they are an individual that don't support the community themselves, have made negative comments about the community, or reinforce negative stereotypes. It becomes tokenism. People want to see contestants that reflect them in terms of race, class, values, geography, careers, upbringing, etc.

"reinforce negative stereotype"... In the context of these shows, that notion often gets tied into bullshit respectability politics. Miss me with that. A Black person on Love Island means nothing *to the producers of Love Island*. There's no other option for them except tokenism. I don't understand what draws non-white people to watch/participate on these shows, especially non-white women, but to say they are meaningless to their own coummunity is to devalue and dehumanize them.

aftercare has been a really stark need to be addressed for reality tv. i was a huge fan of the japanese reality show terrace house, and i have never seen a fan community pull away from a franchise so quickly when a housemate from the last season in 2020 passed away. she had been cast as a villain in a way that is MUCH more mundane than hyperbolic american/UK series but the resulting online harassment literally killed her. apparently there were absolutely no supports or moderation for the cast and even the producers felt no obligation to monitor their mental health. it’s a huge tragedy and i do at least feel grateful for the fans who poured out with love and care and memorials for hana. and starting larger conversations about colourism/racism/mental health stigma that contributed to the situation.

Okay hear me out, and know I think that more body diversity SHOULD be implemented in these dating shows. That being said, these shows are some of the purest representations of the beauty standard that exist on television today. The plot is the exercise and celebration of the beauty standard (including its sub-genres of colorism, fatphobia, racism, ableism and so on). It relies on getting a bunch of "attractive" people together where they will all view each other as potential partners (increasing drama) because everyone meets the same beauty ideal. Right now, integrating body diversity would probably tokenize the plus-sized/disabled cast members, or depict a narrative of rejection/social isolation. The only way I see this not happening would be to get rid of the entire premise of the show being about "hot people dating hot people," but-- because these shows are ultimately just exercises of the beauty standard-- that would mean having to abolish the beauty ideal in the first place. Otherwise the "diverse" cast would be cordoned off to a "special season" (likely recieving less money in marketing, less views, and therefore likely being canceled) like what happened with the queer season of Are You the One. Even on that season of AYTO, the more visibly queer people were sidelined for the more "mainstream attractive" people. These shows are an artifact of the beauty standard, not the other way around. Reality TV is a reflection, not a creation.

Very true!! Many of my criticisms tend to be central to the basic premise of the show(s) so it’s hard to imagine, even if they tried to address those problems, could it be possible or successful under the same premise, which as you mentioned, rests upon the narrow beauty standard? Lmao run on sentence as hell! My next idea would be ok we need new shows with better premises, more inclusion, more intention… but maybe subjecting people to everything involved with reality tv just shouldn’t be the goal anyway? Hahaha I get so lost in this topic, there’s so much to it

100%. The premise is that everyone can be attracted to everyone, and as they only have days to build “relationships” its all very shallow and superficial, basically just “who do I find most attractive and bearable” - so imo theres not space for people outside of the generic beauty standard, as they would just be so hurt about not being picked etc. We already see it now with colorism and racism.
@natatatt
@natatatt 2 года назад
I agree. As someone who doesn't meet the beauty standard set by these shows, I would be very wary of casting plus-size or disabled. Not that such people shouldn't have a chance to be on these shows (they absolutely should), but I would expect to just see confirmation of people like me being rejected by other contestants for not meeting the beauty standard.

I also think there shouldn’t be more diverse body types because tbh as a fat person myself, and even if I was just slightly fatter than the average woman there I’d never want to participate and would never want any fat person to participate there. Its just a shallow show with shallow people in shallow relationships, and thats all it can ever be. The whole concept is based on that. Its just not meant for “average” people, otherwise theyd have to make into something else imo.

Another example of this are the Dance Moms and Toddlers & Tiaras kids who end up making bank on RU-vid, IG and VSCO. I can’t imagine people *not* growing tired of living a celebrity/influencer lifestyle. I mean having a regular job would probably be more beneficial for people who would be tired of the spotlight- of growing unwanted attention and all of that I’m sure would be hard to deal with on a day-to-day basis. And it shouldn’t be taken as a sign of failure but more so as growth, not just becoming an influencer. Not that being an influencer is bad but that they grow out of it out of that expectation of becoming an influencer. I don’t know if this made sense sorry!!🥺

About the "pretending not to do things to be famous" thing: Olympic female gymnasts are also expected to pretend this, to be all chirpy and like "Oh I just want to go and do my routines!!!". Naturally, Simone Biles subverted that along with the other things she's subverted, by blatantly and irreverently referring to the fact that she broke records, and jokingly bragging about being "the GOAT" in much the same way Muhammad Ali used to jokingly brag about being the greatest of all time. Because really, there are plenty of recreational gymnasts/parkour practitioners out there, and it's kind of silly, as an Olympic gymnast, pretending that you aren't going for gold medals and the fame that goes with them (and equally silly to assume that someone cannot back out on that and bench themselves if it's not their day because an athlete doesn't owe a country a medal, because athletes win medals so they themselves can be the winner, after all, and the consequence is - not getting the medal and not being that particular day's winner).

Even reality tv shows that involve contestants showcasing their crafts/talents for a cash prize (RuPaul's Drag Race, Great British Bake off, Glow Up, etc.), it's always more than just the prize and title. You can get more bookings/get signed in whatever your field is, sponsorships, followers, fans, etc. It can be a real career booster for those who already have a career (opposed to love island contestants who may have not had influencer "careers" prior to the show.)

Can we also talk about how the characters of colour have been treated by the public? And the inactivity on production's part to protect these contestants? This season alone has not only seen the assassination of Kaz's character on TV, but it is a very deliberate action on their part. When black women are shown on TV, we are judged for every action we take, and editing is very important, so when producers deliberately made the choice to show her in an edit that made her look like she was in the wrong, love island fans have been dragging her relentlessly, and even when the scene was shown that she was in the right (in unseen bits) it was too late, she was voted for negative categories, and, if I'm being honest, is very much hated by white fans of the show because she did a white guy(Matt) "wrong" which she didn't. The public want reasons to hate Kaz, because she's a black woman, and love island is stoking that and encouraging it. When Kaz and other contestants of colour were experiencing racist abuse (and still are) love island reps said nothing, because they don't care. But when Chloe was getting dragged for being a "home wrecker" they put out a statement, when Faye literally was screaming at everyone in the villa, love island has and still is working overtime to repair her image even though her behavior is vile, and let's not even begin on the lack of scenes for Kaz and her current couple. It is deliberate at this point, they WANT the public to despise them.

The "right reasons" part I've thought about a lot because my friend was recently on the show married at first sight (New Orleans season) and she got a lot of slack for being on the show for the 'wrong reasons' because she said during the show that she applied because it seemed like a fun and silly thing to do. People online for sure roasted her after she said that saying that she should take the show more seriously and such...it was really ridiculous as an outsider to reality tv (ie me) to hear those things being said

Also I just recently listened to a podcast he was on, and he said that immediately after coming back from the show he went to see a therapist, even tho you know, nothing was seemingly wrong yet, but he did it to almost "prepare" for what's to come as one's life completely changes after smth like that. I think he said he went from 200 ig followers to 1M in 9 weeks. So that seems like a good idea for everyone who has gone through smth like this.

There was a 90 day fiancé cast member too (I just saw the title and clicked so if this is brought up my bad) who came out and said that when she didnt want to do the show anymore the crew she was working with (I think a producer?) kept telling her things along the lines of “but think of all the followers you’re going to get after this and how much money you’ll be able to make with cameo” it’s in an interview that she did somewhere on RU-vid. I take it with a grain of salt but I’m inclined to believe there’s some truth to it just given how they all either become influencers or were already influencers who went on the show to grow their fan base so it’s almost like everyone just forgot what the show was about!

I think the reason for having one body type is pretty obvious, and it's that its the standard of beauty. The point of the show is to make a spectacle of putting a bunch of conventionally attractive characters together and adding in a bunch of dating drama. It's not a show people look to for dating inspiration or as a model to find true love or to find a representation of your body type--it's something you watch when you want to zone out and not think about the world. People like watching hot people prance around and get into fights. I don't think it goes much deeper than that.

I listened to a podcast he was a guest on, where he said a paparazzi photographer found his address and for a few weeks took pictures of him and his wife whenever they left the house (for context, Iain is married to Love Island’s current host, Laura, so they’re both being papped). So knowing that’s the level of invasiveness that presenters on the show are facing, I was really concerned when I saw the clips of contestants mentioning the lack of privacy after they leave the show. I also find it very frustrating that the "diversity" conversation almost never properly discusses disability and disabled people's inclusion. You are not discussing disability if it gets a token mention and you pivot to something else. 20% of people are disabled. Representation isn't there unless we have 20% of the contestants *and* 20% of the conversation.
@SleeperGuy23
@SleeperGuy23 2 года назад
Disabilities is way too broad though. With race or body type there isn’t all that much. With disability what are you even doing? What types of disabilities? Are we talking cerebral palsy or color blindness or missing limb or eyepatch or various invisible disabilities. I’m not against this to be clear but how do you include disabled people without including severely disabled?. There is no real way to have disabled representation because it will just end up with the “white people of disabilities” being given time. You know the ones that don’t have much day to day or even month to month issues or the “sexy” disabilities one can overcome like losing a limb and getting a prosthetic or whatever.

I was on Big Brother many years ago, and in Denmark we got "paid" to be on the show. Every week we survived elimination we got an amount of money sent to our bank account (before tax), which was enough to pay rent and bills (of course when tax had to be paid the next year, we all got a bill, but at least we didn't loose our apartment). I had to get a "leave" from my job, luckily they agreed to it, so when I after 3 months got booted of the show, I had 2-3 months where I could not get back to my job because someone else had filled in for me. I ended up applying for a different position in the company and got that (still working in the company today, just worked my way up). You do spend a lot of money on clothes and other things because you need to prepare for possibly being there for over 100 days. I can't imagine going through all those castings and not get on the show or being elimated after 1 week. All the stress involved preparing everything was certainly crazy. It was a good experience overall, but I didn't not like the "fame" that came with it afterwards - I didn't like to take public transportation because people would stare and take pictures. I also did not want to walk alone on the streets in crowded areas because random people would stop you and act like they know you. It's a part of it which I knew getting into it, but just didn't know that I would hate it that much. I managed to go very much under the radar and when people today ask "Havn't I seen you somewhere before?" I just say "I don't know" :) Also a fact: We had free therapy for 1 year afterwards. We have a mandatory session before and after the show, and I didn't use it again. I know some people had a real hard time getting back to "real life" again. Some even had breakdowns, so it really can play tricks on your brain. Overall advice - think it through before going on a show like that. It is MUCH different than what you think when you see it on TV. And the entire aftermath can be very overwhelming.

i’m SO glad you made this video because i watch love island UK every single season and i think about this topic every single time, how becoming an influencer is a much bigger prize than the $50K

I’m writing my university dissertation on a similar topic revolving around dating reality tv shows, specifically the vilification of contestants on this type of show, so this came at a perfect time while my mind is in this mode, incredible vid x

This video is amazing, but also thank you so much for shouting out smaller channels! RU-vid makes it Insanely hard to find new channels, I find myself in a loop of the same 5 people suggested over and over!! Please, never stop doing it!! Also, love your channel and content!

The Challenge is my go-to reality tv show recently. Its refreshing seeing people be openly vendettas and backstab people to get to the money. Its awesome and I think they deserve some benefits after putting their bodies and mental state through all that. love this video and ur content lately!

I had to laugh at the ex members talking about "diversity with personality", and then claiming the girl in the red is enough diversity...

Everyone should check out Oliver twixts quarantine interviews with past ANTM contestants (dating all the way back from cycle 1) there is a lot of discussion about the effects of reality TV and their aftercare etc. from some of the earliest contestants!

Mtv's the challenge is a great example of mixing contestants from all different shows. With the latest season, we have people from Mtv shows but also Big Brother, survivor, Love Island, and lots more including international shows and international cast members. There's also an old contestant of the Challenge, Sarah Rice, who used her winnings to get a PhD in family therapy and is focusing on post-reality tv therapy!

Sure, but this season all the black contestants were voted off early in this season s37(spies, lies & allies).

I'm still watching the video, but in Belgium the candidates in shows like Love Island for some reason do get mentioned in local newspapers. I'm not sure how much they actually "influence" because I've never looked at any of their social media, but I do find it strange to see some of these people in newspapers being referred to as "[name] from Love Island". The articles are mostly updates about their life, like when they get married or have a kid or split up with another contestant in a reality show. Strange strange strange
