What kind of blind do you hunt from?
@morganyoder4277
@morganyoder4277 3 года назад
Pretty terrible ones often, California public land blinds are either worn down and poorly brushed in or I'm that one guy on a 5 gallon bucket you were talking about. One way I combat being seen is the sitka gear I bought for an arm and a leg (which was worth it but it still hurts) which seems to help a bit, but I agree that movement of yourself and the spread is key.

Homemade scissor blind on our boat. Grass it out with overhead cover and we still use face masks or face paint. It’s always funny to see people in a good blind but their faces bobbing around giving them away.

What are your thoughts on birds seeing different color light spectrums and how they see synthetic fabrics or materials in a different way than natural vegetation? I sometimes wonder if our cammo or decoys stick out to them due to the way the birds see them.... I know thats been a thing in the past. Seems like it could be possible, idk.

Great vid and info. I seem to recall you mentioning that when someone says "hands down the best" its a personal preference and isn't for everybody. My blinds usually consist a good thick patch of cattails. My camo preference for where I hunt is the advantage wetlands. It's not dark like a lot of patterns for the areas I hunt. I agree with you 100% Joel. Concealment and maintaining that concealment (i.e. not reaching for your gun, looking around, fidgeting, etc..) is definitely the most important thing to not flare ducks. My dad always would tell me and my brothers don’t move a muscle and don’t look up. We hunted out of boat blinds, blinds we put together on the bank and then we constructed our own blind out of a metal frame covered with wood and then put line-x on it to water proof it. It was really nice and had some nice bells and whistles but no matter what kinda of blind we hunted out of we always brushed it out with, my dad calls it river Cain, the bamboo looking stuff nothing else cuz it was “hands down” the best cover. 😂😂😆🤪 Lol...nice show this week Joel look forward to next week. 👊🏻

There is a few tricks to being really conciled. 1 make specific movements like when you move move don't move around unless you move into a position. Birds pick up on random movements like shaking swinging etc. 2nd take your outer layer of gear and swamp it, like wear it into dirty water or rub dirt on it. Creak silt etc works great, then never wash it again wash your under layers. Commercial washing agents have something in them that makes them glow in sunlight. Third. Get some Elvis shades don't know why but ducks hate being eyeballed yet you can wear solid gold or silver reflectors and no problem. And lastly if your card table chair becomes a blind waterfowl hate shadows, so make it open or covered having the old school slit roof with a dugout shadow is what's scaring the birds if your wondering you could make the blind out of purple pocadot material as long as it doesn't have a shadow. They started making ground blinds like the zero gravity and low body because the birds were getting wise to them because they threw a shadow. If you are out in the open make your shadow into a bush or something natural and you can effectively just sit covered up and do fine. Silhouettes and straight lines and corners don't look natural to anything. Even more so when its a shadow.

Joel, love your videos. Great job. I’m just starting to get into duck hunting. I’ve been binge watching your videos to learn how to duck hunt. If you’re not too busy, I’ve got a couple questions. Can I effectively hunt teal with mallard decoys only? Can I use a mojo voodoo dove spinner to hunt teal?

Yes and yes! One suggestion for you: if you have plenty of hen decoys to hunt with, I suggest using hens only in the early teal season. If not then don't worry.

I use fan palms in California. Use a utility knife to remove the thorns. Leave a longer stem and sharpen the end if you need to stick them in the ground or zip tie to a 2x2 construction stake.

I usually hunt all kinds, I have pit blinds that I don’t care for much, seems to stick out to me. I’m usually only one brushing it even tho we have another group we rotate with. They stomp around it, drive utv thru mud too so from above you can see atv trails going to the pit blind. Then floating blinds. They stick out like a sore thumb too. I have a boat blind on my mud boat. It’s ok if I can bury it up in brush out of sun. I have layout blinds for hunting river edges. And have some flooded timber holes too. Only thing I don’t have is a A frame blind. I’m pretty versatile tho depending on the area I’m hunting.

If you ever hunted with your father as a small child you know what I'm talking about stay calm and let them be kids it will come around. It's not just about killing. It's about passing on knowledge and skill.

I have a cotton trailer placed on stilts to keep out of the water. I have a permanent blind built on a big pontoon base so it can rise with water level. I just built a big wooden permanent blind just inside the woods parallel with another field. Got to be still, to be still you have to be comfortable. We brush in with cane we cut locally and throw some brush on top. Our floating blind, a beaver has made a lodge up against the side of it and really makes it blend in with the environment. The beaver sits in his lodge while we hunt.

we see tv videos all the time with hunters not concealed well. Invariably the birds flare and they are shooting at birds at long range. There is a better way obviously. This video is helpful in re-inforcing the idea of complete camouflage and sitting still. It works for bow hunting and it works on ducks.

Theres a trade off. You have to see to shoot. To suddenly come out of the dark into the daylight is not easy when you have some guy say, "take em". If you can't react instantly, take the bucket off your head, then shoot three ducks before it falls back down...you have no business in a pit or blind in arkansas. You may as well just not load your gun. Ive hunted where its that farcking camouflaged. It was like sitting in a cardboard box waiting for Santa. If that's your idea of fun...there are hundreds of outfitters around Stuttgart
@gooseflatwaterfowlers
@gooseflatwaterfowlers 3 года назад
Joel you read my mind on a good topic for a video. We hunt from a variety of blind types skid, pit, layouts, A-Frames, hog panel blinds, and wood built blinds a lot depends on location and how we have to hunt it. On the topic of concealment to me it’s the most important thing getting hid the right way. When we brush one in we try to let nature camo it for us. That does two things it gets natural camo from vines bushes briars and it takes the boxey look away. To me the best spot to build a blind in a thicket and cut little out around it when being built. Cedars and oak limbs make good natural camo when adding supplemental brush. One thing that always take in account is using the shadows to your advantage if it’s a morning hole put the blind on east side afternoon hole put it to the west side. One thing I’ve started doing is taking pictures with a drone to get a birds eye view and see if anything sticks out remember our judges are in the sky. When it comes to camo clothes I try to match my surroundings and go with a darker pattern. Some patterns are to bright and you’ll stick out in some situations but nothing beats dark brown colors the old timers used that for years and it worked just as good. Lastly new hunters need to learn how to be still and learn how to not look up at the ducks and as time goes you’ll learn how to watch ducks either off the water or glance out the corners of your eyes.
@SurvivingDuckSeason
@SurvivingDuckSeason 3 года назад
All excellent advice! My biggest issue from guys in my blind is moving around or looking up at the ducks!
@gooseflatwaterfowlers
@gooseflatwaterfowlers 3 года назад
One thing I think we as hunters don’t do a good enough job doing is continuing to camo and rebrush blinds throughout the season. Think about you see a faded out blind it sticks out like a sore thumb. Take time and cut fresh brush for it. Cedar trees make excellent brush. Old Christmas trees live and artificial make really good camo. Usually around Christmas you can get good deals on live trees after they get picked through. Wire that to the blind very good camo/brush. Always make sure if you use trees makes sure you tie them on vertically so it will look right. Trees don’t grow horizontally and ducks will pick that out.
@SurvivingDuckSeason
@SurvivingDuckSeason 3 года назад
Goose Flat Waterfowlers yeah we have to rebrush our rice stubble and grass blinds in January. The oak ones are usually fine.
@gooseflatwaterfowlers
@gooseflatwaterfowlers 3 года назад
I remember years ago building blinds out of 4x4 posts and stapling burlap to in and draping burlap over the top half way. We built many of blinds like this right in the middle of Buck brush and we always killed ducks out of it. However I can remember ducks flaring just from us not being hid as good. For some reason back in the day hunters me being one of them didn’t play much attention to detail. What I mean by that is brushing in a blind good so that it’s hid, making sure you’ve got a realistic decoy spread and the are very detailed. It’s like back then we focused more on decoy setup and calling than we did on getting hid. I remember one year we had a horrible year and the following year we got to were it was focus on the details make sure every little detail is covered. After that success rate shot through the roof. I guess some advice I’d give someone new is pay attention to detail in everything hunting wise. I personally think constantly how can I be more successful in the field what do I get better. I’ve heard many hunters always talk about how great those ducks finished we’ve all done that including me. Something that a lot of hunters need to start thinking about is why didn’t this group not finish was it someone moving, not good brushing of blind, calling too much, or was the setup wrong. One thing I’ve noticed when I see some ducks not finish in a hole is maybe the wind messed them up that they could get down in there it might be a swirling wind. When stuff like that happens hunters need to take note of it and how to correct it for next time to be successful.
@teekay1785
@teekay1785 3 года назад
yep, pit blinds are the pits lol. They stink and messy sometimes rusty sometimes standing in water etcbut I dont hate anywhere that is good for killing ducks especially in close. We hunt mainly in floating blinds brushed with oak and buck brush and I try to use vine near the shooting hole edges because it doesn't tend to stick you (just dont use poison ivy) . I like morning glory or grape vine or most any dark colored vine and there is a marsh vine that naturally grows in buck brush and moist areas but I dont know the name of it. One thing we do that helps a lot is cover up the holes that are not being used and we try to hunt every other hole in the blind depending on number of hunters.. I like blinds that enable shooting over the back too but I know thats not great with clients and depends on the placement and wind etc.

Here is a link to a video of one of our hunts that include drone and DUCKEYE view with a floating 36 foot blind brushed with oak . You can see how much even a well brushed blind is noticeable but this one is so big looks like a huge brush pile. There is a boat port that floats with the blind with camp netting loosely tied to trees etc and some brush hanging down from top. We often have two 16-44 or 48 John Boats in the boat port. The main reason I made them floating is several people that hunt there have health and joint problems that prevent climbing ladders etc as an option ands its easy for everyone. We try to use White oak as much as possible it has a color thats more desirable in my view . When we have the time and energy we use more buck brush especially on front wall. There are willow trees at ends that break up outline too. I know there aren't many leaves on trees behind us but there are a few oaks there. NOTICE the BLACK HOLES of the shooting spots on the drone views and the WHITE FACES. The regulars all mask up after sun up good. Here I wish we had covered up some holes to demonstrate the difference but didn't think about it and didn't know we would have the drone that day. Thanks to PHIL BLAKELY for filming some that day when he wasn't shooting! I will try to find still photos of the same blind in buck brush and add later. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CFQoy7sZdN4.html

Cool video. Yeah drone footage is telling. I notice it with some of our blinds too. It’s may be part of the reason why we do so much better on sunny days.

Up and down the flyway ducks get shot at from large rectangular blinds. Ducks learn to avoid large rectangular objects. I prefer a low profile, layout shooting from a jet sled...typically I get close shooting and ducks do not flare because of the low profile : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--Ua_2JXiyvo.html

You'd never believe the stuff we get away with. I'm in central illinois and the ducks are pretty dumb for about a month. Up by Ottawa, Illinois (not canada) theyre just plain retarded. All you have to do is sit on a log and wear camo.

The "hands down" was from the know it all last video! But my first ever blind last year was destroyed on public land. People unscrewed my cedar, broke my shelving and ruined my setup. Hard to see after all the hard work my dad and I put in. Stinks to see the bad people in the sport ruining it for others.

Our birds in south Louisiana are so pressured that our blinds have to be be brushed so much as to render them nearly unusable. Maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but it sure takes away much of the enjoyment of watching the birds work. Unpressured birds, I’ve hunted unconcealed from my dove bucket and hidden behind my gun barrel, lol. That is a lot more enjoyable and much easier shooting!

The trick is to move very slowwww. If you suddenly jerk or make a banging noise you're on the shit list. OK ill share what I've been seeing and other ppl shared with me. Ducks are getting wicked smart about blinds. If they suspect there's a blind they will fly right over the top up high so they can look at it straight down..if there's a black hole...theyre gone. Its gotten where concealment from above is extremely important. Im working on a flip cover for my boat blind. My blind is 45 years old and worked for decades. Its just old school camo gore tex. Tent on a boat sort of thing. I never had to brush it. At first I'd just muddy it up a bit. Today?? I've got 40 pounds of raffia tied on. I had to build a hard cover and now I need a cover to cover the shooting hole. Its gotten crazy where everyone has a boat blind on a lake I hunted solo for decades. Ducks get training up here in yankeeland. Sorry..

The best way to make them flair is visible decoy lines. Or one around the back of a decoy, or having water they can see through and see the lines. I have a guy that hunts in a orange hat and it doesn't seem to matter. If you go to the park in town wearing street clothes ducks will still land in the pond next to you while you're walking smoking drinking coffee and have a black dog in the green grass. However if you put something in the water the ducks don't like they will not come.
@mattbugg4568
@mattbugg4568 3 года назад
If you take a peice of camo blind material and put it in your cap and wrap it around your shoulders and waist kinda like a big puffy shroud that breaks up your silhouette thats all you need. Also lounge chairs instead of uprights work better too. The reason is your shadow being broken up is just as important as not looking up. You don't necessarily have to be concealed as you have to not look like a human.

You literally made a video why ducks spook but you don't talk about hunting 9 to 12 clients in the same blind on the same birds. That is never and has never been hunting. 40 shells per volley is way closer to commercial gunner harvest or punt gun depreciation. No benefit to wildlife and wreckless disregard of the animal.
