On 28th September, Rustival 2 happened. It was good. It would have been better if my 1973 Hillman Imp had made it there like it was supposed to, but it was too busy breaking down ruining my plans for that.

If you have no water in the rad it won't show a water temp. I would guess the head gaskit leak got worse and drained the water into the oil. Beem there done that a few times myself. Its a kick in the plums when it happens. Park Hilda up. Wait untill a replacement engine comes up and do a swap. It was lovely seeing you Mrs Kitch amd both Dumpit and the Saxo at Rustival. Some times a break is needed. Hang in there.

I was thinking the same thing. Gasket failure happened before it overheated through coolant loss. No coolant = nothing to read on the temperature guage. Aluminium block and head toasted as a result. Fundamentally though its still a nice example of this classic car, whether Rich you store it for a while and concentrate on other projects or whether someone else takes it on. I am sure there will be plenty of people who would still like want to take it on. Sleep on it for a while before making any decision would be my advice.

That outpouring of raw emotions in a dimly lit carpark is easily the realest thing I've seen on RU-vid this year. Obviously this wasn't your project from the start and your heart is elsewhere. I feel like an air-cooled engine is the way forward perhaps with some inspiration from that sticker on the suitcase?

Park her, even if it's a year or two. You've put your heart and soul into Hilda as well as hard cash. I can't help feeling you'll end up regretting it if you let her go. Wait for better times. 😉

Relatable. I was pretty fxxxed off on Saturday. Having covered 129.5 miles of a 130 mile journey only to have the exhaust deciding it had had enough on arrival at Rustival certainly dampened my spirits that day. Ended up being recovered and having to wait till gone 9 to be collected before then facing a nearly three hour journey back. To say I was knackered when I finally got home gone midnight would be an understatement!. Thankfully due to a bloody good show courtesy of Ian, Carly, Steph and the others the day wasn't a complete write-off. Didnt look at the Allegro for a good few days after that. Bloody cars. Still, wouldnt change what I drive for a instant. :)

As an ex Rootes group employee I can say that the spiritual successor to the IMP is without a doubt the Peugeot 106! If Hilda's body is in good nick even with the Citreon engine it has to be at least worth 4 figures!

You realise '4 figures' is maybe 8 hours of his time - I suspect he's spent a LOT more than that - this is the problem with "projects", you'll never get your time back so be SURE you want to spend it before you spend it!

You gotta know when to fold em I guess, but I agree with putting Hilda in a corner somewhere and forgetting about it for a bit. I think parting it out wouldn't make you feel any better. Also Dumpit and the Saxo made a great pair at Rustival, was gonna say hi but social anxiety, also you seem to be very popular at these events and were chatting to people whenever I saw you haha. I was in the blue/silver Daihatsu opposite you behind JayEmms Ferrari.

I'm looking forward to Kitch's BX corner at the next Rustival, there must have been an appreciable percentage of the remaining BXs in the UK there. Sticking Hilda in a corner with a sheet over it for a year sounds like the best idea at this point. Worst case scenario, you can invite Jonny Smith around for a barn find.

The suitcase is great, the label on the suitcase is even better. SS Northern Star voyaging to NZ was a thing for emigrants in the 60s. Our family did this on this ship from South Africa to NZ two year after this suitcase. Trivia I know but………..

I remember you bleeding it. My guess is that the coolant loss was via the gasket somewhere? I think it would make for a great electric conversion dare I say it. On the bright side at least it still probably has more power in it that Bella even in this state 😊

As you said yourself, don't do something rash now that you're gonna regret further down the line. Find a space, park it, forget it, and rekindle the flame in a coouple of years time when you've finished the SM....... 👍👍

TU's don't like to overheat. Cylinder head warps quickly. My girlfriend got her 205/TU1m with bad head, but it was leaking coolant to cylinders so not that bad. She drove it like that for 10 years (honestly!), racked about 40K km and last year leaking got too bad (stuttering) so I got another TU1m for 150€ from which we took the cylinder head. It was 17 months ago, it past MOT and emissions and has about 250K km now. I say: go get another TU and mend that antichrist.

How about contacting the local colleges, and see if they have a couple of students that want a project? Get them in a couple of hours a week, point them in the right direction, get them to get the engine out, strip the head down, rebuild it, then you can supervise the reinstall and recommission. You get some help, the car gets fixed, the students get experience then you can move her on, maybe to onr of the students? I'd offer to jump into it, but I have a huge garden project. And the thought of running away to your workshop sounds awesome, but I can't afford the divorce !

Sad times. Stick it in a corner until you're back in the mood. It sounds like you've put too much time and effort into it, to bin it now? I don't know where you are (I'm Wilts way), but if you need a hand to clear a space, I'd happily give you a hand. It just seems like such a waste, otherwise? Keep your pecker up!

Dump whatever is left of the coolant, Dump the mayo out - try used engine oil as a flush out (run it for a while to circulate) do that a couple of times till the oil looks like oil - fill with fresh oil (or more used stuff if you want to be cheap about it) and leave it in the corner - at least the removal of the oil/water mix will stop the internals from going rusty and you may be able to salvage the bottom end - I think the head is cracked or the HG has failed (badly) but it could as easily be racked liner or block.

So sorry you had yo go through that with Hilda last week. When you originally posted that she was broken I thought it was a minor thing and assumed that you would get her running in time for Rustival. As others (and you) have already suggested; park her up in a corner and secure her so no more damage can occur i.e remove the battery and cover her up. Then leave her for a while. I have a feeling that if you don't and decide to sell her in your current frame of mind that you'll regret it later on, I'm betting your mind is furiously working in the background to solve the overheating problem once and for all after all of the work you out into her the previous couple of weeks.

Sorry to hear your having such a bad time with Hilda, I totally understand what you are going through, I've had cars that just don't want to be fixed, new part after new part thrown at them, you fix one problem then something else breaks, it's not only stressful but very frustrating. I get the whole what's the point attitude, try and get through the anger phase, hide her in the corner somewhere and see how you feel in a few Weeks or even Months. Be a shame to sell or break the car after all the hard work you've put in. I understand it's a very upsetting and frustrating time for you right now and you feel let down by all this. Forget Hilda for a bit and enjoy Dumpit 😊

I know how a project car can empty your bank account and still let you down. After a basic flush of the oil, as others have said, park it up and see how you feel in a few months - if someone wants to give you a few hundred more than parts value then consider it - but you'd have to steer clear of a similar project in the future - otherwise keep it if the itch still needs to be scratched.

The thing is.. if you want to sell it,then do. Sometimes enough is enough. I've had cars that i've sold..kinda felt bad that i sold them..then the ptsd reminds me of the reality of owning those cars. So i get it.

If you part it out it will take a lot of time and stress selling the bits and storing them. Once the dust has settled have a think...sort the engine might still be ' just' the head gasket.. Take time no rash decisions you might regret. Good luck.

As it is, Hilda is the total opposite of Dumpitt. Just now you can’t afford financially and, emotionally to give the time to keep Hilda going. I think the whole ongoing story of Dumpitt is going to prove interesting and then allow you time for the SM.

I'm of the opinion that some cars aren't for us.. having had a lowish mile relations elderly merc which was a nightmare and money pit.. broke down 4 or 5 times, sometimes needing the toilet or having collected my GF from the nearby city. Tbf, the Imp does look nice, it's too nice to scrap. I'm looking forward to seeing more Professor Tomato but you've got a SM.

Perhaps the time has come to let Hilda go, says he who is known for holding on to dead cars: clear the BX backlog and look towards your SM. Pity in a way - I did wonder if you'd considered this vacuum filling method of coolant as it seems to be a weak point but as you've 'lost' two cylinders -be it either a failed gasket or a cracked head/block, the point seems largely academic now.

It's ashame. I think if hilda was a reliable fun weekend car, you'd keep it but as you say, it's a massive work in progress that needs alot of fiddling and engineering to get to that point. Your options to me is either keep it stored for a while until you have the time and desire to continue working on it, or sell it as a project to somebody else who has the time for it and then dedicate your time to other projects such as the SM

I think your idea to park Hilda in a corner under a dustsheet is what you should do now. Let time heal things for a while, crack on with the therapy of working on the SM. Return to Hilda when she's ready. Imps are special cars, this one should not be broken/parted out.

I'd get rid of most of your projects and concentrate on your SM which is your true interest. I may be in the minority but I'd happily watch many videos on the restoration of the SM. Look at whether you make more money from RU-vid content (allowing for time to create the content) or your business. Plus you need downtime with your family, that's what matters.
