James, did I miss what happened on your sail that you determined the turbo was bad. Also, couldn't you still use the engine, just be below 1800 RPM? In my research, many have recommended NOT to get turbo motors for the same reasons you're experiencing. Glad it all worked out and good to see a video from you. Watch those milkshakes :).

we had a serious reduction in power and the wastegate lack of movement showed me that will likely be the issue. If we just left it alone the problem would likely end in a blown head gasket

Hi James, we exchanged views before with Philippe - I recently visited a Neel 51 and I have a few questions, probably of no interest to the rest of the audience. What's the best way to contact you if you can be briefly disturbed? Many thanks in advance, Jacques

Thanks for this great video. The carbon deposits in your exhaust elbow and turbo/wastegate come from not running the engine enough at moderate RPM to get the engine hot enough to ensure more complete combustion and also getting the exhaust gases very hot to burn out the deposits. Probably on your engine running it at 2100-2300 (max rpm 3000 on D2 engines) is acceptable full economy and works the engine hard enough. If you do that it is ok to run it lower RPM from time to time. Then once in a while (some people say 15 mins every 10 hrs) once it is up to temp run it at full rpm (3000) or close to it (2800) under load while in gear moving to blow out all the black deposits. The above is true for all mechanically fuel injected diesels, eg Volvo, Venus, Beta, Nanni. Also true regardless of if there is a turbo. I hope this comments help some readers.

No doubt you were also thanking the gods of boat-choice that you went for a Neel and a large engine space while you were working in there. Having lost engine use near a lee chore a few years ago, I was very glad we were able to sail out, so I totally agree that any boat with sails as well is inherently safer. Glad you got it all fixed and are able to carry on sailing.

Hi James I am still in the process of buying my boat and the Neel 51 is on the top of my list with a couple of other. I was just wondering if you would like to help me out, sharing your experience should you have any, or, your opinion on the subject of water getting in the cockpit of the Neel 51 from the stern with big following seas. I have seen a few comment on Neel 51 dedicated forums and I would really appreciate your opinion on that ( could be a subject for a video 😁). I have looked over again your past video and I have not found anything about it, (maybe there was no issue to be mentioned) I know you have been through big sea with your boat and I was wondering if you have comme across the issue, and if yes what did you do to minimise is on your boat. I have been trying to talk with Neel 51 owner but as you may guess it they are hard to find..... After talking to Neel in France, I think this issue may have been happening on the early hull number and some modification in drainage have been made since, it could also be due to poor decision from the skipper, I dont know but your opinoin would be welcome on this subject. Thank you Gilles

Flying to La Rochelle on 25th July to pick up the new boat: hull #35. Your early videos were a big contributor for me deciding to buy a Neel 51. I have had my present boat for 20 years so have spares upon spares. Now I have to rebuild my spare parts inventory from scratch! Million things to do before the 25th so excitement tempered with a healthy dose of anxiety. All the best to you both Oliver

Hi there! Thank you for your videos. Quick question, in the event you wanted or needed to remove the engine, say replace it with a Yanmar :), how easy would that be on the Neel 51? Is there an access point from the cockpit, right above the engine? Are you able to show us that, please?
@carryonsailing

I don't think it would be a massive issue. Someone installed a generator retrospectively.

Pain in the ***. Thank you for the critical advice to get the best because your life and circumstances will depend on them when sailing the seas. The simpler the better is another good rule as you demonstrate here. Good seas and winds The Neel's performance is a game changer for me and great space. I read up using outboards with sailbiats and it can be done with some care and things like a long shaft. But it would be complicated to do it right as you don't want to lose shallow water access. Cheers.

🤔 Thanks for a great video! I learned of your channel from your recent collaboration with Distant Shores. You provided an excellent discussion of the turbo with the part in hand as a training aid. The discussion of reliability requirements of an expedition yacht philosophy was also excellent. My experience and inclination is with mono hulls, but if I were to have a multihull it would be a trimaran because if a SV can’t sail to wind it is uninteresting to me. When one purchases a used SV, “you get what’s installed”. If given the option however, I would choose two smaller engines installed in the Amas for both redundancy and maneuverability. The engines I would choose would be naturally aspirated, mechanically injected Yanmar or Beta (marinized Kubota) for their reliability, universal parts and service worldwide and because the repair parts are more affordable than companies such as Volvo or Cat. Stok Electric of the NL has new collaboration with Yanmar which utilizes a DC electro motor-generator driving a sail drive. This I believe will the future of multihulls as it can use a smaller KW engine due to the torque advantages of DC, it eliminates the transmission (direct drive), and allows regeneration or electro generation to charge the batteries. I approve whole heartedly of your extensive solar capacity. I admire your intelligent, attentive, well behaved dog 🐕🤣!
@carryonsailing
@carryonsailing 2 года назад
Thanks for your kind comments. With the neel, you couldn't put motors in the armas. The become submerged or raised when under way.

@@carryonsailing 🤔What you said makes sense. I’ve observed trimarans under sail with the windward lifting Ama providing counterbalance as the leeward Ama provides lift buoyancy. If the amas contained motors then only the leeward hull or the main hull could provide propulsion or regeneration. 🤔 How close to the wind can a Trimaran sail In degrees? On a monohull the average is 45 degrees but with high aspect ratios, heavy deep keels and the right sail plan, 20 degrees is possible. I’ve heard that trimarans are far superior to cats for upwind performance and that changes in rig, sail plan and the addition of daggerboards, etc can help, but I’ve never head a number. What’s your experience with the Neel? Thanks for your channel and experience in this area of sailing.

Can you send it in to get it rebuild? That would leave you with a spare und you could swap them every now and then to give the used one some tlc. Turbos can do much more damage in case the turbine disintegrates sending little steel bullets into the cylinder and killing the engine completely. Could that be that your problem was that the exaust fumes where not hot enough which lets the fumes condense in the turbo? That happens because the prop doesn't absorb enough torque at low revs and hence the engine is not properly loaded.
@carryonsailing
@carryonsailing 2 года назад
Hi Anton, Nowhere to send it into here. Would have loved a mechanic to help me also! You are right that the elbow doesn't get hot enough is what I have been reading. This is a very well known problem with this engine also. It amazes me that VP aren't made to do a recall this.
@antonditt1661
@antonditt1661 2 года назад
@@carryonsailing I don't think it is a specific VP problem. A propeller is usually pitched to reach rated rpm at hull speed. That is to be able using the full performance of the engine though it isn't a particularly economic way to travel. When you run low revs the prop absorbs less energy than the engine is able to provide so the mixture injected is low on fuel hence the temperature of the exhaust drops which doesn't seem to be that much of a problem unless you add a turbo into the equation that additionally slows down the gas flow and is a rather complex arrangement of moving parts. It's kind of driving in the wrong gear, when the same rules apply that create apparent wind. Commercial boats often cure that by the use of a Controllable Pitch Propeller. They measure the temperature at the elbow and pitch up until it reaches the optimum which represents the healthiest state of engine operation as well as the greatest efficiency. That route though is very difficult to go for a sailing yacht for a number of reasons and impossible for a sail drive. One could btw contemplate if you propeller might be a bit under pitched contributing to the problem. You might want to listen to Nigel Calder talking on the energy aspect of that gap between engine and propeller load (from 2:44). Unfortunately his company doesn't publish prices for their products so they are most probably hair raising. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0uTNjfb3MNQ.html

Anton, thanks for this and taking the time to write. It is all VP, even the folding prop. so one would have hoped that Volvo considered these factors over profit....but it seems profit must have won the race on my engine. On the plus side I am learning how to be more self reliant!
