this week we talk about one of our less known platforms. the 2 gear crawler portal. These are not “bolt on” parts. This portal is designed for the serious rock crawler looking to build a car around rear steering and portals for optimal performance.

I like the fact you don’t bash other products and prop up fellow 4x4 companies. I might of missed the final drive of the 2 gear. 1:1??

Great work! these portals look bulletproof! every serious off roader should want portals. all of us need to be vocal about wanting the option of portals from the manufacturers, maybe in 20 years they may be available in a few vehicles. Any portals available that could be made to fit classic land rover defenders??

Definitely going to throw some on my Jeep XJ with some JK axles when I can afford it.

@@captarmour JK as in Jeep Wrangler JK/JKU generation (08-18). With a classic Defender, if you're willing to go as far as adding portals, the best way to do that with what's on the market today is to find a set of axles that 74weld already makes portals for and swap them underneath your truck, such as dan44s from a Jeep Wrangler.

For your own interest, look into what dobbin engineering was doing with the H1 stuff in the mid 2000s! A man of your talents would appreciate the work!

Last I heard is you have to change the oil every 3k mile…. what wears out first from not changing the oil over excessive long changes. But I guess what I’m asking/ thinking is if the internals parts wear and if they are cryogenic treated how much less they will. Cryo can add a massive 150% to wear parts. Cryo is a must in certain top dragsters builds including turbos. However cryo has a very minimal beneficial effect on aluminum.

It’s a volume thing. As micro particles enter the oil they cause the cushion effect of the oil to diminish. Can you go longer, yes. But this is a performance product and we tell people to treat it like one. You would never change your oil in your built motor every 3-5K. In my built LS3 I would change the oil roughly every 500 miles if not sooner. Same kind of idea

I’m really interested in why a two gear set is better than a four gear with idler? Can you provide some context for the priorities?
@74weld
@74weld 2 месяца назад
In a crawler I see no reason for a 4 gear. All axles that these will go on are custom built. You get to take a low pinion diff and flip it upside down. The package is smaller, able to run a brake in a higher location, and if the gears aren’t breaking which they aren’t, then more surface area from a 4 gear is moot.
@timmo42
@timmo42 2 месяца назад
Does the presence of four gears in portal hubs serve the purpose of providing a larger surface area? And does this configuration offer benefits such as improved heat dissipation and torque distribution, particularly in high-speed applications? Why would you not use this in a daily driver?
@BigWheelFab
@BigWheelFab 3 месяца назад
Does the 2 gear portal need to run flipped gear in a front engine setup and standard in a rear engine?
@74weld
@74weld 3 месяца назад
You flip front and rear diffs. So a LP turns into a HP

@@74weldI know from your other videos that your a fan of the 9". Are there any 9" thirds that work better than others in this 'flipped LP' setup? In particular, with regards to oiling the pinion...are there any out there that have 'oil slinger' mods incorporated, or is the general recommendation to over fill the third?

I mostly do mild overlanding. But I see the $25k price reasonable for just clearing snow and washed out creek beds. I may get a set for my JLU and our Ram 2500 4wd. Where the portal will really shine, is for the new Broncos and 1/2 ton pickups.

@74weld When I look at their website, I saw a $24,999 price listed. $20k is certainly a nicer price.
