For onions planted by seed, you leave them in the ground for 2 years to get a sizeable bulb. Onion bulb starts have a season if grinning already.

I’m in 9b. I just harvested all of my bulbing onions today and got 125 onions with a grand total of 78 lbs!!! My largest one is 2 lbs and just about the size of my 10 y/o face! I started my onions from seeds and starts, but the biggest onions came from starts I got at my nursery. These starts were older than my plants from seeds and I think that’s why they got bigger. Next time I will start my seeds earlier so they will have more time in the ground.

Thank you for another great video. I love your videos where you go from plantings, growing, harvesting, and then processing. The timing is perfect. I just harvested some of my red onions in zone 9b yesterday and replanted some that never developed to just leave in my garden. Some of these were starts that were planted among other vegetables, so they got crowded out. Happy summer gardening. Yes, it's miserably hot here in Florida now. I already can't wait till October 😊

The last time I tried growing onions, voles devasted them. They are attracted to the pungent odor. This year, I am better prepared, and have them planted in a raised bed protected by hardware cloth. I have four of fourteen raised beds to dig out, and line with wire mesh, or rocks. They work too with detering voles. I'm growing in a different season, in north central Alabama, zone 7B. (Yeah, it was rezoned to 8a, but if you look at the last five years, it is 7B. If you look at the historical weather, it can be argued that is is 7a. In the last ten years, the temperature has been down to zero degrees. That is 7A, not 8A). Anyway, I am trying onions again from seed started in January, and the seedlings transplanted around February 20th. Onions take a long time to mature. They aren't a quick crop grown in one season. I'm looking at around 120 days from seeddling to mature, so the end of July, or beginning of August to harvest. And they may take a little longer. I wouldn't be surprised if I am harvesting onions in September. Patience is the key with onions and garlic. I planted my garlic in the beginning of October, and they still need another month yet before they are ready to harvest. www.weather.gov/

Thank you, this was so helpful! I literally have all of my onions sitting out on my kitchen table curing and I have no idea what to do with them, and I have questions, lol. I got a few good ones that bulbed nicely, but many were smaller like yours, are these all still edible now even though they won’t store long? And how long would I have to use them up? I want to dehydrate some and make powder, but can you also chop them and just freeze them in a ziplock bag? Overall I’m pretty happy with my first homegrown onions ever, but next year I will get my starts in earlier. I grew most of mine in containers and grow bags, but I’m curious now because I want to reuse the containers but is there anything I shouldn’t plant after onions in them? I was reading but I can’t seem to find a whole lot of info on crop rotation after onions. Also, were you able to find a pink lemonade blueberry up by you? My store still had them the other day if not 😊
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a
@HomegrownFloridaZ9a Месяц назад
They are definitely still edible. You probably have a few weeks to eat them. You can totally chop and freeze them. I do this a lot and it works out well for cooked onion dishes. If your onions didn’t have any diseases or bad bugs, the soil should be fine for anything. Beans and peas are a great crop to revitalize soil after a heavy feeder or just add some fertilizer to make up for it.

@@denisemiller8474okay then those are the right type for you. Wanted to rule that out first. It could be planted too late. They are daylight sensitive so you want them to go in early spring and then allow them to grow big before the summer solstice which is the longest daylight of the year. That increased daylight prompts them to begin bulbing.

TIP: you want to grow FLORIDA SEEDS not try to "acclimate.". Also, when seed saving, be sure to demarcate your most successful onions to let them flower and go to seed, not just a random bariety that you chose to leave behind in the garden.
