Cameron MacKenzie, an assistant professor of industrial and manufacturing systems engineering, gives an interactive demonstration to students in IE 561: Total Quality Management. The demonstration - dubbed "The Red Bead Experiment" - is based on work by Dr. Edwards Deming and focuses on variability in processes.

For added realism senior management could introduce a jig to make sure all workers tip the paddle by exactly 34 degrees :)

Looks like these students have a great teacher. Certainly the Red Beads is an important lesson. Subtle, but crucial. GM, Ford, and Chrysler haven't understood this SIMPLE lesson for roughly the last 50 years. Why do the Korean and Japanese auto makers get it and Americans don't?? This is where are SAD country is going.

Thanks for the compliment. In practice, I think it's really challenge to decide when bad results are due to individuals or due to a process. Deming would argue that the vast majority of the time it is due to a bad process, and I tend to agree with him.

Because Deming went over there and taught them how to do it first when the Americans wouldn't listen. It's baked into the rise of their industry in a way it isn't in the US.

The point to to prevent the red from getting place into the box. Don't make red beads in the first place.

This is one of the exact take-homes from the excersie! Management needs to either reduce the number of red beads, find out how to sell the red beads too, or both! The point is that it's MANAGMENT that HAS to undertake one of these three solutions. It's got nothing to do with the workers or how hard they try. I'd recommend watching some of Deming's orginal videos if you'd like to know more - he's a very entertaing personality.
