I am a 14th generation colonist whos people come from England, born and raised on unceded Coast Salish territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw ,Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh, and Lil’wat now living on unceded Mi'kmaq territories in the district of Kespukwitk. I just want to thank you guys for this podcast and taking the time to educate me, it has been so valuable to me and my process of trying to decolonize my mind.

The Confederate flag stands against tyranny and is not racist. The battle flag version has the Saint Andrew’s cross on it, much like the Scottish flag and the Jamaican flag. If anything, it is cultural genocide against the Southern people and Dixieland to take down Confederate flags and monuments. Also, most Italian Americans (Nancy Pelosi is an exception to this) want the Confederate monuments left alone. The South is poorer than the North because of the Yankees. The South or Dixie has its equivalent to Landback. Basically, Landback from the Yankees, much like Hawai`i, Aztlan, Alaska, and Puerto Rico.

This is a narrative you've been fed, and it's fictional. Every leader of the American Confederacy sited White Supremacy as one of, if not, their main guiding principle. Both the South and the North, Yankee and Dixie, built their nation on the backs of slaves and indigenous genocide. That doesn't mean a new Southern Confederacy needs to be built on those same ideals- there is real Dixie culture besides the mistakes of the past- but we need to reckon with reality first. The American government is tyrannical and it's history is hateful, both Yankee and Dixie.

But I think there's an undeniable association between the confederate flag and a racist past because it was adopted by so many white supremacists... Also the vice president of the Confederacy (Alexander H. Stephens) literally said "[The Confederacy's] foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests upon the great truth, that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery - subordination to the superior race - is his natural and normal condition." You can't separate the flag from its racist history, and yeah... It has a racist history.

The Confederacy fought to keep slavery, it is a racist flag. And btw white southerners colonized and ethnically cleansed that land from Cherokees, Creeks, Seminoles, Choctaw as well as other indigenous people throughout 18th and 19th century.
