After three years of using the William Optics Redcat 51 I am sharing my experience with this telescope. It is a great telescope for use with a dslr, mirrorless or dedicated astronomy camera and is very versatile. I highly recommend this telescope to anyone looking to shoot wide field deep sky objects.

I have been using my RedCat with a german equatorial mount for over 1 year, and I am astonished by the ability to focus and capture deep sky objects. The gam changer for me was the Pro Astro Gear Black Cat adapter that lets me mount the EAF (geared), ASI AIR, and guide scope.

I wish I had seen that one earlier, a much more elegant mounting solution!

I'm still waiting on your thorough review of the 150p Quattro, About the redcat I was between it and the Sharpstar 61 EDPH2 with the reducer and by luck I came across a used one that was a great deal and was easy to decide that way, I love the little scope... thinking about getting the 150p, for extra reach.
@Robservatory

That review is on the way! I have made 4 or 5 great images with it and will shoot that in the next week or so. It is a great scope, especially because of its fast f ratio. I can make images twice as fast as the Redcat. I only made the Redcat video first so that I can sell it, I can't go back to f5 after shooting a faster scope.

@@Robservatory great to hear, I just posted on the unboxing video... I also have the super fast Samyang 135mm f2 but Ive being shooting with the Sharpstar 90% of the time. Its hard to process the data of the 135mm f2 because I cant put a 2"filter , I 3d printed an adapter to hold a 1.25"filter on the back of the lens but APSC as my sony a6400 is a little bigger and couses a lot of vignetting... I use the UHC filter with it and its awesome if it wasnt the vignetting...
@Robservatory
@Robservatory Год назад
Have you looked at a clip in filter? Optolong and STC both make clip in filters that go over the sensor. I’m thinking of doing that with my full frame modded Sony, but it’s hard to use a regular camera after going cooled monochrome.
@AndreH3d
@AndreH3d Год назад
@@Robservatory the only one I found for the Sony cameras are from Kase and I got the CLS which was the only one they had for astro... did help a bit, but added a good amount of vignette in the corners... not as much as the 1.25" filter thogh... but the filter was not very effective and added a radial gradient too... most of the makers only produce clip in for canon and nikon... I found a very shady brand for the sony tho, but coudl not find any info and was very expensive...
@AndreH3d
@AndreH3d Год назад
Actually the shady brand I was talking about is STC, I did a search and looks like there are more options now for the full frame camera, I have an A7III but not going to use it for astro due to the shutter death issue it suffers... thanks for putting me on the search again... the Kase CLS for the full frame is better tho, I have one, but as I said I gave up on using it for astro. The APSÇ fov also is more suited for me anyways

Hi Rob! I am considering to buy a REDCAT 51 and I found your review really helpful and you've convinced me this will be the right pick. However, I would like to ask you a few questions about cameras compatible with this telescope. I am using Canon 5D (DSLR) full frame and Canon R (MILC) full frame cameras and I'd like to know if either of them would work with this scope or do I have to buy a camera specifically made for astrophotography. Thank you very much for you answer and you time in advance. Have a nice day! :)

Great review. I have 2 questions: 1- is there a M42 adapter for the back? 2- How well does the focus hold through the night? Does it need re-focusing?
@Robservatory
@Robservatory Год назад
Thank you! There is a M48 thread on the back, but that can either be swapped out for a M42 or adapted down. Most cameras and accessories are M48 though so there’s no real need. It holds focus very well throughout the night if you let the scope cool down for 30-45 minutes before focusing. If I focus too soon I find I have to do it again within an hour, but if I focus when the scope has reached ambient it holds very well. My temperature stays fairly consistent during the night here though, only changes about 2-3 degrees Celsius.

Hey thank you so much for the videos i am now subscribed. Im looking at just starting out with DSO / Astrophotography and have been looking at the redcat 51 and either a 585MC or 294MC from ZWO along with the autogider 120mm - been thinking of the EQM 35 pro mount to be run on the asi air plus. Would this be a good setup or should i change anything in your opinion. Thanks in advance if you do reply
@Robservatory
@Robservatory Год назад
Thank you! The Redcat is a great scope for starting out and will continue to be great in a few years when you are an expert. I would pass on the cameras you mentioned and go with either a 183MC Pro or a 533MC Pro. I own both, but I prefer the 183 on the Redcat, it has a perfect resolution match for getting great detail. The 533 is newer, but the square format and larger pixels aren’t perfect for the Redcat. Still pretty good though! Definitely go with a cooled camera, this will help you create much cleaner images. I have never used an EQM 35, but it looks like it will do the job. Also consider the iOptron mounts that are close in price, they should be very similar and may give slightly better guiding results. The 120 mini is a good guide cam along with the 30f4 guide scope from ZWO, and the ASIAIR Mini is highly recommended to control everything.

Hi - I have purchased the Redcat 51 and am in the process of getting the rig together. The mount I have is the Star Adventurer GTI. Do you think that this mount is capable of taking the Redcat and DeepSkyDad fully loaded with EAF, ASIAir and ZWO mini guidescope and guide camera? Many thanks.

I just purchased this ! However, I m a bit lost… I want to use it with a mirrorless camera , so I went ahead and purchased an adapter to fit my mirrorless. But , its that all I need ? I mean, whats next ? I just mount my apsc camera on a traditional tripod ( I have some manfrotto and Sirui ) mounted with this telescope and thats it ? Or… … DO I NEED A 32 mm guide-scope ( which was recommended by the seller to add to my purchase ) ? What does that do anyways ? Or a specific tripod ( tracker ) to mount my apsc mirrorless on it ? I’m lost… a bit overwhelmed. Help 🙏🏻😌👋🏻

Congratulations on your new scope, it is perfect for starting out in deep sky astrophotography! Your next step is an equatorial mount, that will allow you to do deep sky astrophotography. If you want to stay fairly portable and on a budget, the Star Adventurer GTI is a good choice. You can run it with manual star alignment and batteries to start and add autoguiding and computer control later.

I just can't see recommending this over the AT60ED. The price differential is so great between these two scopes and the optics are not that far apart in quality, not to mention the wee bit extra aperture in the AT60ED. You can buy 2 AT60ED's for less than the redcat and you definitely are not going to get 2x the performance.
@JAG9100
@JAG9100 Год назад
keep in mind that the flattener for the AT60ED is an extra $200, bringing it near the cost of the redcat, and the redcat has a dovetail
@Robservatory
@Robservatory Год назад
The petzval design is also sharper and better corrected than a doublet. For astrophotography I would go with a triplet at least. The 60ED is also 44% slower than the Redcat, so you need to spend that much longer exposing your images which is not worth the price difference. I actually find the Redcat too slow and have moved to an F3.4 scope which lets in twice as much light. There is also the build quality, the build on the Redcat is much better. Of course I was never comparing the two or recommending the Redcat over another scope in the first place :)
