(very) Early highlights of Detroit's 'Redwood Line', the biggest forward line assembled in NHL history. LW Elmer Söderblom, 6'8/202cm C Michael Rasmussen, 6'6/197cm RW Oskar Sundqvist, 6'3/193cm
Well it never helped that Blashill's offensive strategy was skate up ice fast take one bad angle shot, turn the puck over for an odd man break the other way. Rasmussen was never able to use that big frame, set up on the offense, and cause havoc in front of the net. He's definitely getting that chance now. That line is going to wear teams out.
The puck follows Soderblom around. That's a trait of very high IQ players like Raymond/Seider. He knows where the puck is going to be and is a few steps ahead at all times. I've loved watching him play so far! #LGRW
My god, that's the perfect name for this line. As excited as I was to see them, they've exceeded every expectation thus far. Looking forward to seeing more.
I've watched the Red Wings for decades and I'm impressed. Honest to god, in that first game vs the Canadiens, I dare say that that was the most dominant Red Wings line I've ever seen not named "The Russian Five". It was like watching the Russian Five's debut against Calgary. They had the puck all night and controlled the game when they were on the ice. Once they were in the zone, you couldn't get them out of your offensive zone. Just impressive. Now, for a long term basis... we'll see. But for game one.... absolutely dominant.
You hit the nail on the head in regards to the Russion five, the puck control is something special to watch, so amped up for this Season for the Wings. It will be interesting to see through the season what the coaching staff does with the special teams& with the option of using the Redwood line for options. What a" fitting" name for this line." Go Wings"! Wing nut for life..
@@checkonline9324 How so? I was talking about size. The pairing hasn't worked amazingly but they certainly aren't bad together. Doesn't help that both Seider and Raymond are having their sophomore slumps even though Seider is playing fine at the same time some how lol.
Love that Sundqvist grabbed that puck immediately, looks like the makings of some team chemistry, few early wins is excellent, showing results means they’ll only buy in more.
Quite the 3rd line we got here, I love this Redwood line! Hope they keep this line together because it'll be so fun watching them this year. They'll just get better and better the longer they play together. We might finally have a replacement for the Draper Maltby McCarty grind line.
It's such a refreshing feeling. Last year while watching games, you couldn't wait for Larkin, Raymond, and Bertuzzi/Seider to get back on the ice, because once their shift ended the Wings play was kind of bleak. Yes we had Vrana, and Zadina which was decent. But it's just nice now that we have way more reliable lines. One second it's Larkin, next it's Copp's line, next it's Soderbloms line.
The best attribute Sunny brings is knowing when he is on the ice. He knows how to bring his presence in the quietest and also the loudest ways. Idk why STL let him go. Basically the epitome of what won STL their cup.
He's still recovering from the trippel surgery (both hips and a knee). Didn't play in the pre season - still goes out and battle. Says a lot about his character.
As you can see in this video, he's in good hands. Still think he's recovering from his surgery, but he's found awesome chemistry on the Redwood line. I'm hoping that the Wings keep him on the 3rd line all season with Ras and Elmer, because it seems like the perfect spot for him.
Soderblom is playing like he wants to stay in the line-up! He is a great fit on a "Redwood line." Even if they don't score a lot of goals, they will be tough to play against, and teams will have to match top defensive pairings against them.
Imagine putting the Redwood line with Seider and Edvinsson on the ice as a pairing, with Cossa in net. That has to be the largest combination of players on the ice at a given time for one team in NHL history, right?
Soderbloms an amazing talent, his physicality, decision making and spacing aren't perfect, but he has the skill and iq to adapt. If he can stay away from injuries, this giant will have an amazing career
I'm impressed with many of the new guys. This line is incredible. However, I believe 1 of the other Wings to watch is #23 Lucas Raymond. From what I have seen, he's got the potential to be another Stevie Y #19.
9:52 Elmer takes the puck from the center face off and dumps it in the offence zone corner. Normally a very bad move since he was the front guy and his d-man was totally available and should have gotten the pass from Soderblom. But... Elmer chase down and gets his own dump in, winning the board battle as he did over and over again. Wonder what the coach thought about that play?
Big, strong and MEAN = hard to play against. I can see them wearing out the opposing line with hits that cause late game turnovers. Excitement brewing for a balanced Wing attack.
my only critique of Soderblom thus far is with his frame I really wish he was physical and deliberate in his checks. But again that could amount to a lot of headchecks sooo its like a double edged blade.
Imagine a sniper on that line !?!?! I know it's a stretch, but why not try this for an experiment ; One guy on defense ( guess who), add Vrana. Bake and serve .
I was thinking Zadina... I think He played very well in preseason and camp. He was one of the most improved. I would like to see what he could do on that line.
I recommend watching some of Elmer's tape from the SHL. IceHockeyGifs has a reel of him. That guy has a laser of a wrist shot. Frolunda used him from the right faceoff circle on their powerplay, rather than as net front. And he was quite lethal from that spot.
Laughing at commentators' limited knowledge of former 'big man' lineups; don't they remember Flyers Legion of Doom line ?? Trying to think of other " skyscraper linemates" through the years as well. Detroit could become scary good with just a touch more "Stevie Y" doggedness and settle the goalkeeping question right now. My 2 cents. {:))
The Redwood Line are bigger then Flyers Legion of Doom line. The Redwood Line average length is 6´6 and 230 lbs. Eric Lindros is 6´4, John LeClai is 6´3 and Mikael Renberg is 6´2

That's a cool name - but wouldn't "The Tree Line" be an even better one? Not as obviously huge as redwoods - but a "tree line" is a thing in itself just like a "production line" is, right?
The Wings will likely challenge for a playoff spot this year and likely be a power in 2-3 years. There are far worse places to be than a rapidly improving O6 team with Yzerman as GM.
