I’m greatly conflicted, I’m joyous and praise God that it happened to bring about a reforming and purifying of doctrine via the scriptures, but I’m also greatly distressed and depressed at the friction, animosity and his unity it brought within the church at large. @@bradleymcdonald6273 guys, ecumenical councils have been infallible since the time of the Hebrews. This is nothing new in the History of our Tradition. The Pope is always backed by the councils, otherwise they would elect a new pope as they did in times of extreme turmoil. What this means is that what the council decides stands but that doesn't mean God won't send them out to the desert once it has all been decided. So yes, a person can make an infallible decision on doctrine but they will also be held accountable for this decision.
Brilliant, as a swede in mid 60’s I learnt the history of Martin Luther in 3rd class in school. It was a thrilling story our teacher told us. And later we learnt the Swedish reformation from 1520’s until the council of Uppsala 1593, which ends when papist king is dethroned by his uncle, Gustav Adolf’s father, in early 17th century.

I was glad to see you mentioned Unitariansm but I wish you would have brought up Michael Servetus, humanist and erstwhile comrade of Calvin during their education in France. They disagreed strongly, and the latter abused his growing power to persecute the former, eventually luring him to Geneva where he had him burned at the stake. This angered the Genevans who then banished Calvin from the city. As for the first ever regime of religious tolerance that transpired in Translyvania, this came about because of the Unitarian Francis David's influence on the young king and not the other way around. Unfortunately, it didn't outlast the king's short reign and the denominations' followers wound up finding refuge in Poland where they were tolerated by the Catholics there for a time. As you mention, it made its way to Great Britain, where it is still essentially practiced as a Christian religion, and then to America where it had some non negligeable influence on the formation of the US system of government. Although it has never had large numbers of practitioners, it and Universalism with which it merged in the mid 20th century, have had outsized infuence on reforming major social issues such as abolition and the equal participation of women in the life of the city, and many others. Unitarian Universalism is no longer strictly Christian but draws on many wisdom traditions and is based on principles and shared values rather than dogma.

I find it encouraging that something closer to the gospel of Jesus should have begun in Lyons. Lyons was the place of the pagan altar of Dagon for sacrifices made to overthrow the Roman Republic. Why would you use academia's explanation for reform, "humanism and the classics" and leave the roman church with the titles Christian and Biblical??????????????. The only reason for reform was not humanist or classical ,a major example being Rome( though not the only one) which is very human and very classical(traditional). The behavior of Rome was similar to every collective that promoted "humanity" (them being the foremost in their own minds) and "tradition"(social programs profess charity for the weakest physically and eat widows houses). This is mostly good information, but not all of it. Yeah he did a lot of bad things and a lot of good things. Indulgences definitely were an evil practice and he was right to challenge the Pope on that front. But I don’t like how his theology led to such divisions. Now we have over 10,000 different denominations of Christianity, all of which disagree. The Reformation led to chaos within the church.

Luther (real surname Luder) did not "decide to become a monk"! Despite his father's opposition Martin Luder became a begging FRIAR.
