Covenant of works is not in Genesis is it? Those words are not what Moses used right? Maybe I a just too simplistic. And I dont see a covenant of grace in Genesis either. Why are we using terms to build a bible system on when the words are not in the Bible?

What the modern Church needs is a New Covenant Revival (Heb. 9:10) in which members of various denominations are willing to re-examine everything they believe and see if it agrees with the Bible, instead of the traditions of men. We need to be like the Bereans. It will be a battle between our flesh and the Holy Spirit. It will not be easy. If you get mad and upset when someone challenges your man-made Bible doctrines, that is your flesh resisting the truth found in God's Word. Nobody can completely understand the Bible unless they understand the relationship between the Old Covenant given to Moses at Mount Sinai and the New Covenant fulfilled in blood at Calvary. What brings all local churches together into one Body under the blood of Christ? The answer is found below. New Covenant Whole Gospel: Let us now share the Old Testament Gospel found below with the whole world. On the road to Emmaus He said the Old Testament is about Him. He is the very Word of God in John 1:1, 14. Awaken Church to this truth. Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by husband unto them, saith the LORD: Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Is the most important genealogy in the Bible found in Matthew 1:1 (Gal. 3:16)? Is God's Son the ultimate fulfillment of Israel (John 1:49)? Why has the modern Church done a pitiful job of sharing the Gospel with modern Orthodox Jews? Why would someone tell them they are God's chosen people and then fail to share the Gospel with them? Who is the seed of the woman promised in Genesis 3:15? What did Paul say about Genesis 12:3 in Galatians 3:8? Who is the "son" in Psalm 2? Who is the "suffering servant" of Isaiah 53? Who would fulfill the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34? Who would fulfill the timeline of Daniel chapter 9 before the second temple was destroyed? Why have we not heard this simple Old Testament Gospel preached on Christian television in the United States on a regular basis? Once a person comes to understand the New Covenant promised to Israel and Judah in Jeremiah 31:31-34, which is found fulfilled by Christ during the first century in Hebrews 8:6-13, and Hebrews 10:16-18, and specifically applied to the Church in 2 Corinthians 3:6-8, and Hebrews 12:22-24, man-made Bible doctrines fall apart. Let us now learn to preach the whole Gospel until He comes back. The King of Israel is risen from the dead! (John 1:49, Acts 2:36) We are not come to Mount Sinai in Hebrews 12:18. We are come instead to the New Covenant church of Mount Zion and the blood in Hebrews 12:22-24. 1Jn 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. 1Jn 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. 1Jn 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. The following verses prove the Holy Spirit is the master teacher for those now in the New Covenant. Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Mar 1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Act 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. 1Co 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. 1Jn 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. Heretical prayer: O Mother of Perpetual Help, thou art the dispenser of all the gifts which God grants to us miserable sinners; and for this end He has made thee so powerful, so rich, and so bountiful, in order that thou mayest help us in our misery. Thou art the advocate of the most wretched and abandoned sinners who have recourse to thee: come to my aid, for I recommend myself to thee. In thy hands I place my eternal salvation, and to thee I entrust my soul. Count me among thy most devoted servants; take me under thy protection, and it is enough for me. For, if thou protect me, I fear nothing; not from my sins, because thou wilt obtain for me the pardon of them; nor from the devils, because thou art more powerful than all hell together; nor even from Jesus, my judge, because by one prayer from thee He will be appeased. But one thing I fear: that in the hour of temptation I may through negligence fail to have recourse to thee and thus perish miserably. Obtain for me, therefore, the pardon of my sins, love for Jesus, final perseverance, and the grace ever to have recourse to thee, O Mother of Perpetual Help. This is a legit Roman Catholic prayer, look up "O Mother of Perpetual Help" if you want to know if it’s legit. This is super heretical. This doctrine of invoking departed saints doesn’t seem just like "hey it’s like praying to a friend.". . :)

Thank you for posting this. I am a Dispensationalist. I have never been exposed to Reformed until I moved to Pittsburgh. I couldn't understand why I had such a hard time communicating with fellow believers - it was like we were talking apples and oranges. I still don't get the full grasp of Covenant Theology but now have somewhat of a better understanding. A young friend of mine is wanting to check out Eastern Orthodoxy, and I've agreed to accompany him on this journey. Funny thing, the more we learn, the more he is convinced of Reformed Theology, and the more I am convinced of Dispensational. Most of my fellow believers are prior military, like myself, and despite our differences, we serve one another, and our military bond is made even stronger by our faith in Him. Again, thank you for posting this.

Hi, I’m straddling between reformed and dispensational theology. I believe the doctrines of grace are correct and hold to Calvin’s view on election, all five points of TULIP too. But I have pre trib rapture, millennial reign of Christ eschatology. It seems from this video that dispensationalism and covenant theology are the same things with different names, only slight differences. We all need Christ for our redemption, he descended and lead captives in His train. He took those who trusted God prior to the cross. What do you hold to?

The Creation Story from Genesis 1. There are three main thoughts on Genesis 1 and the Six Days of Creation. These are a short list, just three... 1) It was Six 24-Hour days that the Earth and Heavens were created. There are variations that it was only the Earth or only from the time of Adam was a total of six days. 2) It was Six 'Thousand Years' days (the thousand years are more or less, but about a thousand years per day). 3) The Gap. In Genesis 1:1 God had created the Heavens and the Earth. That could have been millions or billions of years ago. In verse 2, God replenished the Earth with life. For those that study this - it is necessary that those that have a view on this they have read The Holy Bible over and over. They have read, studied, and meditated on God's Word. If they haven't done this part, then it would be too difficult for them to understand. That is what I believe is true. Of course, God has to help. It is important to consider the Angels. The Angels were also created by God. The Angels were apparently given FREE WILL. When some of them went against God... that was bad for them because they had become FALLEN ANGELS. A note on FREE WILL. I have often heard theologians and scholars say that we all have a free will, but that is not exactly true. Adam had a FREE WILL, but he fell. We are from Adam and we are already in a bad position. We may think we have FREE WILL, but we actually don't, but a fallen position where we need help from GOD. Enough said there. In Job 38, The Lord tells Job that the Sons of God (Angels) shouted for joy when the foundations were fastened... Job 38:4-7 The Sons of God Shouted 4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. 5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? 6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; 7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? When the foundations of the laid - when was that: what day? Also, when God created The Earth did he make it void first? Or was the Earth already existing as a void? In Isaiah 45:18 he created it not in vain or void... Isaiah 45:18 Not Created in Vain or Void 18 For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the Lord; and there is none else. How long did it take to create the earth from this passage in Isaiah? When did the Fall of Angels occur which includes Satan? When the Serpent was in the garden Satan was already fallen. So when did the fall occur? Also, Neanderthal and Cro-Magnons don't seem to fit. When God made Adam, Adam was intelligent already. Otherwise, if God made man in his own image and if you believe in Evolution, what did God look like? Did he have a Neanderthal appearance, then did he also change in appearance after that? Then there is the dinosaur question. Reading Genesis 1 - I don't see any dinosaurs there. There may have been dinosaur-like creatures in the seas, but not on the land. I never saw where Adam met T-Rex or Triceratops. Also concerning the dinosaurs and science - there were three periods: The Triassic; the Jurassic; and the Cretaceous Period. The Cretaceous Period is when T-Rex and Triceratops were existing. Science has fossils and it is difficult to dispute. Now the fall of Satan is mentioned in Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 - and you have to understand that in the Prophets there are oftentimes multiple applications. Again I say, those that have not spent time reading, studying, and meditating on God's Word; and have not been through the complete Holy Bible over and over... this might be too much to handle. To those that have, then please listen to what I will say. In Isaiah 14 - The Bright Morning Star or Lucifer rebelled against God. In this passage it speaks of The King of Babylon and beyond. This passage also speaks of The Beast that will be at his height in Revelation. Isaiah 14:12-15 Son of The Morning - Similar to Day Star 12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. The Lord Jesus is called The Day Star by Simon Peter, and he is called The Bright and Morning Star in Revelation by The Lord himself... 2Peter 1:19-21 The Day Star - and The Holy Ghost Inspiring Prophets 19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. In Revelation 22:16 The Bright and Morning Star 16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. The Enemy is a deceiver and tries to act like he's The Lord Jesus. His title as Son of The Morning is close to Day Star and Bright and Morning Star. So for the three main thoughts of creation I have one more passage in the book of The Prophet Jeremiah 4... Jeremiah 4:23-26 The Pre-Adam Days God Destroyed the Earth 23 I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light. 24 I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly. 25 I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled. 26 I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the Lord, and by his fierce anger. With this passage from Jeremiah it is easier to see the passages from Isaiah and Ezekiel... Ezekiel 28:11-18 The Fall of The Anointed Cherub - and King of Tyrus 11 Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, 12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord God; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. 13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. 14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. 15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. 16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. 17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee. 18 Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. This passage speaks of The King of Tyrus, but it also speaks of the Anointed Cherub that fell. This will also be applicable in the 70th Week. When The Anointed Cherub was in Eden, The Garden of God - that was before Adam was in the Garden of Eden. This is either a different garden or the same garden, but a little different in Adam's time. Again, when did this occur? Walking in the Garden of God. Now, as in Isaiah 14 this individual had a kingdom. This one here mentions that he had sanctuaries. Hmm. He was perfect in all his ways... until iniquity was found. Pride found its way. The devil and pride are closely related. Therefore, I have to go with the Gap. Most modern scholars will go with the Creation of the Heavens and Earth in Six Days, and different scholars vary in that theology. I am in the minority here, but that's okay with me. My reading, studying, meditations, and understanding of God's Word has me to believe that there was a gap in verse 1 and verse 2 in Genesis chapter 1. Salvation is not based on what a person believes on in Genesis 1:1,2 - and I prefer not to argue too deeply on the matter. I will end it here.

This was a helpful video. I have seen many 3-4 minute videos. I do appreciate the longer one. Thank you. It makes it easier to identify the errors of covenant theology. I think the biggest issue amongst Christians today is that they can’t get past their differences. There are aspects of Covenant theology that are true and some where you can see people have guessed. The same with Dispensationalism. There is a lot that is true (btw it’s not new. It’s 2500 years old) but there are aspects that some dispensationalists have come up with that aren’t biblical. The problem is that Christians don’t see these two views as overlapping but see them as opposites. Both are man’s attempt to understand Scripture which means they are going to have errors. Instead of picking a side, Christians need to see how they are interconnected to begin to see the fuller truth. Thank you again.

So if I'm understanding this correctly, what gets messed up and distorted is the fact that yes God has created a covenant with humans through Jesus Christ. God has created a covenant with all those who will believe on HIS SON, Jesus Christ. God determined through Jesus that he will go into covenant With those who will freely, sincerely and repentantly and humbly believe on Jesus Christ, His Son. The covenant that was established is Jesus. Jesus is the covenant. Jesus is the life. Jesus is the way. Jesus is the truth. Jesus is everything. Through Jesus everything was created because Jesus is the voice THE WORD of God. Jesus is the love of God. It's all about Jesus. God has given to Jesus and covenanted with every human who comes into a covenant WITH GOD THROUGH JESUS, to give them to Jesus when they believe on Jesus. You must believe on Jesus. Anyone who denies Jesus is denied by God.

Great overview on covenant theology. When you’re trying to find those correlating signs and seals in regard to the new covenant though, have you considered that the replacement for Old testament circumcision could be the new covenant circumcision of the heart by the Holy Spirit , and that perhaps the passing through the Red Sea from slavery to salvation could better correlate with New Testament baptism

If a child is supposed to be able to understand the gospel, why do humans need all this stuff? Even you have to try to define what your saying. You speak of all kinds of kings and people and stuff that can't save a child. If a child could not know any of the stuff you are talking about, could they hear the gospel and be saved? Also if the child could not read at all, does it matter to God?

Hi, the "real" dispensationalism really minimises grace. If you disagree, it's because your dispensationalism is not the real dispensationalism that was first proposed. Even John MacArthur calls himself a leaky dispensationalist, because he doesn't believe most of dispensationalism. For example, the true dispensationalism teaches that people in the Old Testament were saved by the Law. I don't think you believe that. I think you're only dispensational in your eschatology, like John MacArthur.

Hi. Interesting perspectives, however, the scriptures you refer to are all about Israel (Jeremiah, etc). God is quite clear on that, including his views on, and the role of other nations in the kingdom. Has He then done an about turn in the NT by suggesting his chosen people are done away with and it’s now for everybody?? Seems a bit bipolar, which I’m certain God is not! He does not change..review the scriptures with that in mind. Re-read revelations because again, it talks about Israel as does the NT. This theology covenant you refer to seems to be a doctrine developed by men and not God’s word in its true essence, ‘Always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth’ (2 Timothy 3.7). I can’t understand how theologians have created a whole new religion/doctrine based on misunderstanding of the NT when all we have to do is listen to Paul in Acts 24.14 and 25.7-8 (knowing the context of why he makes these statements). Yes, we don’t need to sacrifice animals anymore as our sins are redeemed through the sacrifice of Christ but that doesn’t mean we can create new doctrines of what grace and salvation, etc means? Christ himself shows that..he followed God’s word and commands to it’s proper fulfilment, not to change it but to show how it should be done. Paul behaved and followed the example of Christ who again, I don’t believe said that following his resurrection, you all can create new doctrines to suit yourselves or to try and enter in an all encompassing broad gate! And in relation to the Abrahamic covenant you mentioned, again this is related to Israel’s seed not every nation.. God gave blessings to one of Abraham’s other seed (see Ishmael’s blessing) but his covenants, law, promises and curses are all related to Israel. See Genesis 26.3-4...basically, through Israel will the other nations be blessed but that does not appear to be happening..perhaps due to what revelation 2.9 states! I’m sure you’ll disagree with my comment but if you truly are sincere and want to follow Christ and have salvation, re-read without all this added doctrine and theology.

Hey brother - I appreciate the gentle spirit and lack of vitriol in your disagreement. However, I think some of your comments betray a lack of self-awareness on your part. You accuse covenant theologians of adhering to "doctrines developed by men" and "creating new doctrines to suit yourselves" and "adding all this doctrine and theology", etc. But, the plain fact of the matter is that everyone does theology and holds to particular doctrines - it's unavoidable (and in fact, it's biblical). If you hold to the Trinity, then you yourself are "doing doctrine and theology", which is a good thing, because it means you take the word of God seriously and are seeking to understand the whole counsel of God on various issues. Even you in your post espoused certain doctrines and theology that you think are taught in the Scriptures, and it's simply disingenuous (indeed a violation of the 9th commandment) to accuse covenant theology of approving the creation of new doctrines simply to suit ourselves. We believe covenant theology is taught in the Scriptures, otherwise we wouldn't believe it. So I urge you to consider dropping the biblicism and empty rhetoric, so that there can simply be a conversation about the biblical merits and demerits of each position. God bless.

Also, for what it's worth, I don't think that the Church has replaced Israel. Rather, there is a type-antitype relationship between ancient Israel and the Church - the Church IS the eschatological Israel of Old Testament prophecy. For example, consider the following: Israel: Consecrated by the blood of calves and goats (Heb 9; Lev 11.44-45) Church: Consecrated by the blood of Christ (Heb 9; Titus 2.14) Israel: Chosen in Abraham (Deut 7.8; 6.10; 4.37; Ex 33.1) Church: Chosen in Christ (Eph 1.4; John 17.6) Israel: Conditional love (Ex 19.5; Deut 28.9; Amos 3.2; Lev 26.41-42; Heb 8.9) Church: Unconditional love (1 John 3.16; 4.9-10; Romans 5.8; 8.35; Eph 2.8; Titus 3.4-5) Israel: Called to bring forth Jesus Christ (Gen 12.3; Rom 9.5) Church: Called to belong to Jesus Christ (Rom 1.6,7; 8.30; 1 Cor 1.2) Israel: Assembly of Israel (Ex 12.6; Num 14.5; Lev 16.33) Church: Assembly of Christ (Heb 12.23; Acts 20.28; Eph 5.23,25) Israel: Flock of Israel (Ezek. 34.17-20; Ps 77.20 cf Ps 78.52-53, 56-59; Ps 95.10-11; Ex 20.38; Heb 8.9) Church: Flock of Christ (John 10.1-18; 21.15-17; Acts 20.28; Matt 25.32-34) Israel: Carnal nation outwardly set apart by carnal birth & ceremonies (Ex. 19.5; Lev 20.22-26; Deut 26.19; 14.21; Gen 17.7-14) Church: Spiritual nation inwardly set apart by spiritual birth & faith (1 Pet 2.9; John 1.12-13; 3.3; 18.36; Luke 17.21; Matt 5.3; Col 1.13; Rev 1.5) Israel: Kingdom of Priests offering carnal sacrifices (Ex 19.5; Heb 9.9-10; Leviticus) Church: Kingdom of Priests offering spiritual sacrifices (1 Pet 2.5, 9; Rom 12.1, 15.16; Heb 13.15; Rev 1.5) Israel: Peculiar Treasure for a time (Ex 19.5,6; Deut 7.6; 28) Church: Peculiar Treasure forever (1 Pet 2.9; Titus 2.14) Israel: God’s people outwardly (Gen 17.8; Lev 26.12) who became not His people (Hos 1.9 cf Heb 8.6-13) Church: God’s people inwardly (Hos 1.9-11 cf Rom 9.24-26 & Heb 8.6-13; 1 Pet 2.10) Israel: Holy People (Deut 7.6; see #1, 7, etc) Church: Holy People (1Pet1.15; see #1,7,etc) Israel: People of inheritance through Abraham (Deut 4.1, 20, 37; Acts 13.19) Church: People of inheritance through Christ (Eph 1.11-14,18; Matt 25.34; Gal 4.30; Heb 9.15; 1 Pet 1.4) Israel: God’s external/earthly tabernacle (Lev 26.11; Ex 29.45, 25.8; 26.1; Heb 9.1-2, 23) Church: God’s internal/spiritual tabernacle (John 1.14; 1 Cor 6.16-20) 1Israel: God walks among them (Lev 26.12) Church: God walks among them (2 Cor 6.16) Israel: Twelve Patriarchs Church: Twelve Apostles (note: not Patriarchs) Israel: Married to God (Ex 24; Jer 31.32), who divorced them for unfaithfulness (Heb 8.7,9,13; Hos 1.9) Church: Married to Christ (Eph 5.22ff; 2 Cor 11.2; Heb 8.9-10), who is their faithful one (1 Cor 1.30; 2 Cor 5.21; Phil 3.8-9) Israel: Type (Gen 17.7-14 Rom 9.5; Gal 4.21-31) Church: Anti-type (Gal 6.16; Rom 2.29; 9.6, 22-26, 11.26; Gal 3.16, 29; 4.21-31)

I enjoyed this video. He is, however, wrong. Old Testament believers were saved because of the New Covenant's retroactive efficacy. The Old Covenant was not of grace but works. It came in alongside the promise. By believing the promise, even though the New Covenant had not been formally established, believers were made recipients of New Covenant blessings. The New Covenant is the ONLY covenant of which Christ is the Mediator.

Thanks for the video - always great to encourage discussion on the covenants! As a particular baptist, I have a few nitpicks :) For one, I wouldn't refer to the views you presented as "The Reformed View", but as one understanding of covenant theology among several reformed views that all have degrees of continuity & discontinuity. A recent groundbreaking academic book that masterfully traces this diversity and uniformity is Samuel Renihan's "From Shadow to Substance". Also recommend Matthew Bingham's work "Orthodox Radicals" on the identity of Baptistic Congregationalists (aka particular baptists) as heirs of the Reformed tradition. Also, terms specific to covenants are absolutely used of the Covenant of Redemption in the Bible! What about Isaiah 55:3-4 and Luke 22:29 (διατίθεμαι)? As for the Covenant of Grace, since you quoted John Frame, I suppose I'll let him explain 1689 federalism for me - "Everyone who has ever been saved has been saved through the new covenant in Christ. Everyone who is saved receives a new heart, a heart of obedience, through the new covenant work of Christ. So though it is a new covenant, it is also the oldest, the temporal expression of the pactum salutis... the efficacy of the New Covenant, unlike that of previous covenants, extends to God’s elect prior to Jesus’ atonement. When believers in the Old Testament experienced 'circumcision of the heart,' or when they were Jews 'inwardly,' they were partaking of the power of the New Covenant." (Systematic Theology pg. 79-81) Amen! ;)

Very helpful explanation. I finally grasped covenant theology around twenty years ago and it has been a wonderful help to understanding scriptures as a whole and unified, special, and historical revelation of God’s redemption of sinners. It made it literally exciting to trace it from Genesis to Revelation. More, it helped me see love in its true sense. The Hebrew word, ‘hesed,’ became a comfort beyond my expectation, and it filled out my understanding of election. No, it doesn’t solve the mysteries God has not chosen to address in his word, but it solves many things that had seemed mysterious to me.

It really helps for commenters to do their own research, and put their answers in writing. Here, I desire to share what I have grasped about Covenant Theology. Take a look: COVENANT THEOLOGY Covenant Theology is typical of reformed theologians. This includes the Reformed and Christian Reformed, the Presbyterian, the Anglican (or Episcopal), and to some extent, the Lutheran. The Catholics also recognize the same approximate divisions of Scriptural history, while differing on the question of man's responsibility in the covenant of grace. Many Messianic Jews, the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox, Roman Catholics, Reformed, Anglicans, Methodists, and Lutherans, all subscribe to the "No Millennialism (Amillennialism)" hermeneutics of Christian Eschatology. The Christian church denominations just named, fall either into the "Confessional" or "Rivival" mainstream varieties of Evangelicalism. Confessionalism is the emphasis on historic Protestant orthodoxy represented by conservative Presbyterian churches, certain Baptist churches, and some confessional Lutheran churches. Revivalism (Emphasis on religious experience) is represented by some quarters of Methodism, Wesleyan Holiness, Pentecostal/Charismatic, Anabaptist, Baptist, and Presbyterian. When modern Dispensational Theology, subscribed too by the Plymouth Brethren (JN Darby), in coherence with Dispensational Premillennialism, became popular within Fundamentalism - a strain of Evangelicalism that was adopted within Baptist, Pentecostal, and Charismatic circles, Amillennial Eschatology declined in many Protestant circles. Fundamentalism (Early 20th century), though it is a variety of Evangelicalism, is not with the two mainstream varieties of Evangelicalism. The difference between the two before named theologies, in relation to the two named eschatologies, can be understood and now explained. Covenant Theology is eschatology as it was understood by John Calvin, which was a component to John Calvin's acceptance of Historic Premillennialism. Covenant Theology was not only a component of Historic Premillennialism, but it also has been a component of Amillennial eschatology, and Postmillennialism. Covenant Theology, then, is a Calvinistic conceptual overview for understanding the overall flow of the Bible through the covenants, beginning with the Adamic Covenant of works (Life/obedience), which represents all of mankind as the federal head (Romans 12: 21); this includes Adam's failure (Genesis 3: 15), God's grace of faith in Jesus Christ (Genesis 3: 15/Romans 16: 20), and eternal life (Psalm 2 and 110/Isaiah 53/Philippians 2: 5-11/Revelation 5: 9-11). The Noahic Covenant (Genesis 8: 20-9: 17) has redemption motifs (Saved from the flood), and creation motifs (De-creation to creation). The Abrahamic Covenant (Genesis 12, 15, 17) is for Abraham and his descendants (Genesi 17: 17); it is everlasting in that it cannot be replaced by any other covenant. The Abrahamic Covenant is accepted by faith, not by works (Genesis 15: 16), and it involves the external sign of circumcision (Genesis 17: 10) matched with circumcision of the heart (Jeremiah 4: 4). The followers of Christ are children of Abraham (Galatians 3: 7), with Baptism as the external sign inherited also by Gentiles (Galatians 3: 6). The Mosaic Covenant (Exodus Chapters 19-24) found in Deuteronomy is God's dwelling in the people's midst (Exodus 6: 7/Leviticus 26: 12), which is a gracious covenant (Redemptive-Exodus 20: 1-2) and mostly viewed as referring too the Old Covenant; it is a re-enactment of the works covenant (Condemnation and death), National (Blessings for obedience-purely legal), which is a sacrificial system that points to the Gospel of salvation through a mediator. The New Covenant is alluded too by Jesus at the Last Supper, as well as Jeremiah 31: 31-33, and Isaiah 49: 8. The New Covenant is spoken of again in Hebrews chapters 7-10. Covenant signs and seals occurr in Matthew 5: 17-18, 12: 41-42/ Luke 1: 32/Hebrews 3: 5-6, 9: 12, and Protestants hold that the Covenant signs and seals are the Lord's Supper and Baptism. John Calvin adopted the position called Historic Premillennialism followed by Justin Martyr. Justin Martyr's eschatological view did have leanings on chiliasm (Literal 1,000). Covenant Theology, along with Historical Premillennialism, is the view which Calvin held, as he rejected the basic tenets of Dispensational Premillennialism, such as pretribulation rapture. Progressive Revelation, otherwise called Dispensational Premillennial Theology, teaches that Biblical eschatology follows the Biblical dispensational periods: Innocence (Genesis 1: 1 to 3: 7), conscience (Genesis 3: 8 to 8: 22), government (Genesis 9: 1 to 11: 32), patriarchal (Genesis 21: 1 to Exodus 19: 25), Mosaic (Exodus 20: 1 to Acts 2: 4), grace (Acts 2: 4 to Revelation 20: 3), and the thousand years yet to come (Revelation 20: 4 to 20: 6). Progressive Revelation is a component of Futurism (Premillennialism). Progressive Revelation holds that Revelation 4-5 are future events, which overlapp with this Messianic Age, Revelation having seven sections: 1: 1-3 to 3: 22/4: 1 to 7: 17/8: 1 to 11: 19/ 12: 1 to 14: 20/15: 1 to 16: 21/17: 1 to 19: 2/20: 1 to 22: 21. Covenant Theology stands in contrast to Dispensationalism, in regard to the relationship between the Old Covenant with National Israel, and the New Covenant with the house of Israel (Jeremiah 31: 31). Covenant Theology is often referred too, by it's detractors, as Supersessionism or Replacement Theology, because, of a mistaken perception, that it teaches the abandonment of God's promises made to the Jews, by replacing Jews with Christians. To the contrary, in fact Covenant Theology holds that God has not abandoned His promises to Israel in the personal work of the Messiah (Jesus of Nazareth) who established the church in organic continuity with Israel. Again, the augsburg Confession (Article XVII) rejects chiliasm. Division should never be an option, within the framework of Historism, which views prophecy as being fulfilled in the past, present, and future, and was the belief held by Martin Luther, John Calvin, Thomas Cranmer, John Knox, John Thomas, and Idealism found in Postmilleniallism, which holds that eschatological materials are symbolic (Spiritual), especially if division is ignited by educated degree possessing pastors. These minor views are not grounds for any Christian Church to practice Closed Communion. All of the Biblical eschatological views - Amillennialism, Historic Premillennialism, Dispensational Premillennialism, covered in this thesis, are problematic in some way, and they cannot be fully conclusive.

I am curious to know how it was determined what parts of previous covenants are carried over vs. fulfilled. For example, something I have been wrestling through is the sign of circumcision. You mention that circumcision is no longer the sign of God’s people and that the sign is now baptism. While I agree with baptism, I can’t seem to understand why God would tell Abraham circumcision was an everlasting covenant (Genesis 17:7, 13) if it was only a temporary covenant. Can you shed some light on this topic?

That's the thing, it _is_ an everlasting covenant. The thing dispensationalism gets wrong is they treat it as a race based covenant, but that was never the case. The sign of the covenant was given to the household in Gen 17, and even the household servants from far off and not related by blood were to be given the sign. Paul makes this clear in Romans 9 that the promise didn't fail because it wasn't a promise to an ethnic people, but a spiritual people. And in chapter 11 we see that gentiles are grafted into the promise as "natural" branches are pruned. It was never a promise based in genes, but one for those whose faith is rooted in the promised Messiah. The Church didn't replace Israel, Israel was always the Church and the Church always was Israel.

I think you would benefit from reading what John Gill has to say about "washings" which you dealt with out of Mark 7... Baptist actually view the text differently than you represent us to believe...The actual context concerning Pharisees would follow the same understanding as the degree they would go to in tithing on that which would be overlooked by most...the washing would be to not sprinkle or pour over but to to sink the items Covered in the text under water...! I do not think that you would ever misrepresent on purpose what someone else believes to better your argument, nor would I... I love your spirit and the way you go about presenting your teaching. That is false understanding. Israel was always a type of the church. In the Greek Old Testament the LXX which would have been the version the apostles were familiar with, anywhere where the people Gathered in a great assembly or congregation the Greek renders ecclesia the same word the apostles used to describe the church. The old often was a type or shadow of the reality, we are all children of Abraham by faith if you believe Romans. There is 1 people of God Israel=Church and Church=Israel, the promised land is not the land of Israel at all but the eschatological kingdom!

I’ve studied Covenant theology at length and have come to the conclusion that, like Disoensationalism, it is built on presuppositions that are inferred, but never explicit in Scripture. For this reason these both are a house of cards if one inspects the presuppositions. It is very clear that Zwingli, Calvin and Luther all went back to Augustine rather than the Scriptures. Far too many presumptions. To hint at a better way, consider that the unifying of Gods purpose is Jesus. In promise in the Old, in reality in the New. Simple as that.

God didn't make covenant in scripture ??
@All-Things-New
@All-Things-New 8 месяцев назад
@@bigtobacco1098of course he did. He made a covenant with Noah, with Abraham and with Moses/ Israel. He also made covenant with Kind David. Ultimately He made the New Covenant which is explicitly stated that it is NOT LIKE the Old. But nowhere does the Scripture teach an overarching “covenant of grace” nor dies it even imply a covenant of works with Adam before the fall. These are constructs of covenant theology.

a covenant is a 2 way agreement between God and man. God says " I will do XXXX IF you do XXXX". all covenants are conditional. God will not break his part in the covenant but we can. IF we break the covenant the covenant is no longer in effect.. dispensationalism teaches that the first covenant that God made with Jews was an " UNCONDITIONAL, eternal and IRREVOKABLE" covenant. they believe that reguardless of how much sin and evil that Jews committ Gods covenant is still in effect, this is heresy and demonic!. God has ZERO promises to those who hate, reject and rebel against God. dispensationalism is the greatest heresy in church hiatory IMO.

Wait, did you say dispensationist dont believe salvation is by grace through faith in Christ? What??? Thats not true at all. Of course its by faith in Jesus. Always has been. From Genesis to revelation. Only one sacrifice. Ugh, you don't get it. Thats the dispensationalist constant frustration with you reformers. We hear all the time a complete misrepresentation of the sound and Correct doctrine of dispensationalism. Its like us claiming your view makes God a liar because you believe church supercedes Israel (which is so out if wack, and you dont have anleg to stand on and have to twist scripture, but whatever). I see the difference between Covenant and Dispensationalism hinges upon Israel. Sure there are other differences to some extent, but it just seems like the elephant in the room is does the church replace (supercede) Israel (spiritually or otherwise)? Or, does God still have a plan for the nation of Israel, meaning the Jews who are back in the land? Im regards to the two doctrines, I do want to point out that Dispensationalism believes fully in the covenants of God and carries them through time. There is only one that supercedes another and that is of the law and the new covenant, which is fulfillment of that law. Dispensationalism is simply identifying various time periods in scripture and how God is unfolding His story (redemptive history). For example, adam and eve before they fell were not in sin, they were innocent. Now, there are obviously differences within both doctrines from New Covenant theology to HYPER-Dispensationalism (which is heretical, and dispensationalist completely disagree with Hyper-dispensationalism. Hyper teaches two modes of salvation...one for the church through faith in Christ alone, and one through the law for the Jew). Back to dispensationalism and covenant. There are many overlaps. Both agree on creation, the law and salvation. They differ in views on Israel and the Church, prophecy, hermeneutics, and eschatology. Again, widely ranging within both camps. Like timing of rapture, for example.

Salvation hasn't always been faith in Jesus Christ. Only since the death burial and resurrection.
